I'm not wildly fond of tumblr ads promoting weight loss all willy-nilly, but the theming of this one combined with the fact that I saw it on a blog that I first followed for Dracula Daily posting has me losing it. Lose weight how, pray tell, dear tumblr ad? Lose blood weight? Because someone's drinking it? Am I going to be running through Transylvania because there's a vampire chasing me?

this legit makes so much sense like i think a core part of the mountain goats experience is understanding how the physical media interacts with the music, but if you don't or can't do this for whatever reason that would be fucking jarring lol. the amount of weird little nuances you can pick up on just by looking at their cd cases and booklets... it's amazing

Carnage. That's what they found. Nothing but carnage waiting for them. Their first indication of what horror lay before of them had been the smell - that of rotting flesh and old blood, left out in the elements for days. The closer they ventured, the stronger it became, until many of the other troops had found themselves retching from the overpowering stench of death. Next was the sound of the carrion eaters - the crows, shouting their jubilation at the feast, the wolves, calling their compatriots for bounty that lay before them. Then came the silhouette of broken weapons - shattered spears, snapped swords, cracked axes, all strewn about, embedded in the earth like gravemarkers for the damned. And finally, there was the sight - bodies strewn in the road, blood and muck mixed so thoroughly that the ground was an unnatural burgundy. The occasional shard of armor glinted in the mud, torn so completely from their wearers and scattered like seeds. Human, horse, pegasus, wyvern - nothing had been spared the slaughter, and many were so twisted and broken that it was hard to identify what they had once been. As they approached, his foot hit the shard of something - glancing down, he saw it was a piece of a mask, like the ones worn by the war beasts. Had one of them been in this company? The thought was like a chunk of ice settling in his stomach - the war beasts were the Empire's mightiest assets, capable of breaking through walled cities, the reason they'd broken the siege of Garreg Mach as quickly as they had. What could have brought one down like this? The banners of the Empire lay in tatters, each shredded, as if the very sight of them had been an anathema to whatever had done this. This…this had been several battalions, all headed towards the Fraldarius front. He remembered the night before they had left, the drinking and the revelry. That had been three days ago - and they were only a day's march away from Arianrhod, where they'd left from. This was safely in Empire territory, near one of the greatest bastions of their strength, along one of the main roads leading east. And yet, somehow, this slaughter had commenced, with no warning, not even an inkling of what might have caused it. "What could have done this…?" one of the others up front whispered, her voice shaking with horror. The carrion eaters scattered at the sound of their approach, but didn't stray far - winter was coming, and no creature would be fool enough to abandon such a feast. The harsh caws seemed unearthly in the cold air, the feel of their stares pinpricks as they all came to the edge of the charnel ground the road had become.
