Trying not to get paralysed on Hoosier Hospitality

BESIDE THE DECATUR COUNTY COURTHOUSE, GREENSBURG, IN: As in the celebrated tree growing in the clock tower thereof, which has positively been identified a few years back as being of the mulberry species, and long something of a landmark for travellers between Indianapolis and Cincinnati along I-74 (Indiana Exits 132 and 134) and US 321.

And still something of a mystery as to how such a tree could grow from such a height.

The which surprised even Ruff and Reddy, more or less the "pioneers" of our Funtastic community, who, like a few other friends of ours, are heading to Gatlinburg, Tennessee for an Easter Sunday to outdo Easter Sundays.

"So what exactly is it all about, Snagglepuss?" Ruff, an energetic little kitteh, asked at a downtown Greensburg cafe where our party, which had already included Crazy Claws, The King and Sheena--not to mention much in the way of cheese, sausage and crackers.

"You see, Ruff and Reddy," Huckleberry Hound explained, "our friends out in Gatlinburg, by name of the Cattanooga Cats--"

"I believe we've heard of them," Reddy remarked.

Huck continued: "Anyway, this feline quartet have a coffee house and artisan roastery in Gatlinburg, Tennessee ..."

Moi: "...and they are working on an Easter Parade of sorts for us fellow characters along The Parkway--that's Gatlinburg's main street, more or less--on Easter Sunday. An impromptu, almost casual sort of schtick, even, guaranteed to impress what tourists may be in the Great Smoky Mountains over Easter!"

"Which, you may like to know," Crazy Claws added, "is rather early in the ordained cycle for Easter. It'll be on March 31st this year!"

You could hear our little company gasping at the revelation.

"But," The King remarked with some swagger, "let it not be hoped that the parade will be rained upon!"

The whole accompanied over rather generous helpings of what would pass for the Blue Plate Sepcial down Indiana way, served rather generously and the waitresses trying not to be jerks. Or, worse yet, on a par with Hooters Girls. But still, it's just Indiana. Next stop, Cincinnati and a bowl of Cincinnati Chili galore!

The redheaded boy rolled his eyes at the nickname and looked upwards at the girl. “Okay, Pinky.”

“Hey, you know that I got so many nicknames for you right?” Blossom smiled cheekily.

“Enlighten me.”

Blossom squealed. “Well first we have the basic, Red. Or Reddy. Because not only your hair is red - but also your eyes, cap, clothes! Everything about you is Red. Hey, your skin is even turning red!” She said looking at the face Brick is making, it’s obvious he was flustered.

“Second of all, we have Cherry. Because the last time I kissed you to try to blow you up, you had a cherry with raspberry scent coming from you! That’s why I enjoyed kissing you so much.”

Brick was really blushing at that statement more than he already was.

“Third of all, we have Poppy. Because you’re like a poppy eyed puppy. Since you are made of made of puppy dog tails right?” She asked with a smile. The red ruff nodded slightly with a blush. “There’s a lot more to call you. But I’m not going to explain all of them.” She sighed.

Brick smirked at her, his blush was starting to fade. “Because you’re a chatterbox.”

Blossom giggled and poked his rosy nose full of a little few freckles. “So are you.”

“Yeah, I know.” Brick smiled softly.

God, I loved that show. Watched a few minutes now and realized how racist Baba Looey is.

Hey, so remember that ages old Touché Turtle sketch I did a few months ago? Well, I brought Catalina back, and she's gotten quite a facelift since she first appeared. Still short, still sassy and still a force to be reckoned with in terms of swordsmanship (though naturally, she won't beat Touché Turtle himself).

A quick bio for her (italicized means subject to change)

Full Name: Catalina Gutierrez

Species: Cat (obviously, though what breed of cat I'm still working on)

Birthday: July 27th

Country of Origin: Spain

Height: 2'5"

Weight: 92 lbs.

Fur color: Cherry Red

A member of the famous Feline Paladins, a squadron of feline musketeers within the Heroes Society. If Touché Turtle is the D'Artagnan of the Heroes Society, then Catalina is the Athos: she is taciturn and strict, rather aloof and tends to take on missions by herself. Though coolheaded in most situations, she can have some impulsive moments and a hot temper that takes a minute to cool down. She's notorious for her brutal honesty, and won't hesitate to speak her mind, especially when she's angry. Despite this, she's protective of the members of her squadron, namely Emilia, who she cares for like a daughter, and Augustin, whom she recognizes as separate from the actions of his father, the Black Knight.

Catalina has a mysterious past that not even the upper ranks of the Society were able to uncover, though it ties to the Dugan clan and her hatred of of the Gold Paladin, which runs even deeper than Dum-Dum's. She has confronted him only once, which resulted in her bitter defeat. She learned that there was only one person who was able to defeat him, and that was the heir of the Dugan Keep. To that end, she decided to seek Touché Turtle's services...albeit in the most unorthodox manner by arresting Dum-Dum and holding him in prison until Touché arrived. She got chewed out for it later, but in her mind, the end justifies the means. It wasn't an easy partnership, especially in regards to Dum-Dum, but if they can make it out of this without killing each other, then mission accomplished. And maybe, just maybe, she'll discover what made Rutherford Dugan choose this sleepy sheepdog as the next Keeper of the Crown.

Trivia:

- Her profile here doesn't show it, but she's actually left-handed.

- Her costume was heavily inspired by the Three Musketeers set in Revue Starlight, specifically, Hikari Kagura's Athos card, though she also has elements of Karen's D'Artagnan costume as well. Her costume was almost more elaborate than this, but I remembered that I have to draw her again and again 😬

- Personality wise, I imagine her to be a distant relative of Ruff (of Ruff and Reddy fame). I might draw them together some time.

- I can also imagine her and Touché being at odds because of her attitude, though they'd slowly warm up to each other, especially after Cat warms up to Dum-Dum.

That's gonna be all for now, maybe until I decide to do a full on rewrite of the original For Love and Glory. She'll probably appear sometime in the third fic, where they encounter the Gold Paladin again. I'll be posting a (more or less) complete fic list for my Touché Turtle fics in that series on my writing blog, @taviewritesstuff.

My current love for Touché Turtle and Dum-Dum aside, I’ve also been working on The Blue Fur. The other H-B fic featuring an anti heroic Selkie Huck and a cool Desert Flower? Yeah, that old fic. I kinda figured out the direction that I want to go for this story, after letting it gather dust for a while. Perhaps once I finish BFA, I’ll put up the first chapter of this story and see what kind of traction it gets.

I do know that Hokey and TC are in this, they’re both kinda jerks in this one (though Hokey more so, since he’s selling Huck off), and Ruff and Reddy might be getting a prominent role here. That’s all I’ve got for now!

Ruff and Reddy headcannon

On one of their legendary trips to nowhere via their Cushman scooter, their stopping at a root beer stand sees them swallowing down several root beer mugs between them, their thirst being what it was, and in the bargain discussing the likelihood of picking up some diving lessons and experiences in the process. Which, with some connexions to Peter Potamus' Magic Divers, might be rather easy.
