Yuna: Everyone is assembled. We are ready to begin the attack.
Ishikawa: Where is Jin? He should be here.
Masako: He said he has business to take care of, then ran away after a golden bird.
Norio: Let us hope that business does not take long.
*meanwhile*
Jin, soaking in a hot spring: I really needed this.

Steel A Jeeg's Magno-Mixtape Vol 08
April arrives, and we are all its fools. So let's all settle in, grab a beverage, and agree to be the silly geese we know we were meant to be.
Tumblr media
Instead of subjecting you all to a playlist of joke songs (check the readme to find out the torture I planned) I decided to do something a little different that met the spirit of the day, at least.
APRIL SHUFFLE The rules are simple: I set my entire music collection on shuffle. The intent - take the first 20 songs in the shuffle, pick my 12 favorites, and organize them into a playlist. Try to find any emergent themes, good thematic or musical transitions, and have something to say about each track. The caveats - No repeat tracks, nothing that's been on a mixtape before. No skits, obviously. And no songs from the same album. Good or bad, it made it on the mix.
I then had to put together a cohesive song order, and maybe even come up with an emergent theme. Did I find one? Check the readme and you'll see!
The access code is: BEAMCONFUSE
Either way, enjoy the music. It's a very jazzy mix this time around, the perfect playlist to ride out the thunderstorms, eclipses, and freak earthquakes while we wait for warmer weather to arrive.
Featuring tracks from: Mos Def, Isao Sasaki, David Bowie, Earth Wind & Fire, Maryanne Murray, The Decemberists, Takayuki Miyauchi, and more!
Choose your format: [FLAC] [MP3]

Taka: Chef's kiss? Do... do they really??
Jin: "based"? Based on what?
Yuna: the bird flu? Yeah they tend to do that
Ryuzo: "what's up stairs?" They can't talk.
Ishikawa: Apartment complex? I find it quite simple
Shimura: Road works ahead? Yeah I sure hope it does
Lady masako: you telling me a shrimp fried this rice?
Norio: Wood fired pizza? How is pizza gonna find a job now?
Kenji: You're telling me a ginger bred this man?

The Tragedy of Clan Adachi
I made a post a while ago discussing my distaste for the handling of Ghost of Tsushima's heavily-implied gay character, Lady Masako Adachi. That post was criticized for bringing down people who identified with Masako and her struggles and saw her as a role model of someone who is gay and has a strong set of family values and a high position in society.
I want to apologize first and foremost for my previous take on the issue. It was never my intent to bring anyone down, and I'm sorry if I did. Allow me to clarify my personal hangups with Masako to better articulate myself. Spoilers below.
My issue is with how Masako's story ends in comparison to that of the rest of the main cast. Let's look at each main character that is alive at the end of the game and what their final fate is.
Tumblr media
Jin is left with the most bittersweet ending, though he is not alone in having one. He loses a lot in the game: his oldest friend, his uncle, his estate, his title, and the respect of those in his station. To save his people, he sacrificed everything to become an outlaw, and he'd happily do it again. His fate is that even though he's lost much, he still has a close circle of friends and the respect of the common people who know that he will fight for them. It's not a happy ending, but it is one of hope.
Tumblr media
Lord Shimura likewise loses his family as well. Jin was the son he never had, and he watches him slip further and further away until he's on the side against law. Thus, the shogun orders him to kill Jin. Shimura is left with no family to call his own, and tearfully does battle with Jin in the finale. Depending on the ending, however, he either comes to peace with an honorable death and the knowledge that Jin will carry on his legacy, or that he can at least start a new family and lead his people against the remaining Mongol threat. Another bittersweet ending, but there's hope.
Tumblr media
Yuna also loses much throughout the game. She's never had a fully safe or happy life, and she loses the one person she's been trying to protect for her entire life. All she has left is Jin as someone to care for, and even then she's seen as a scapegoat for Jin's 'outburst' as the Ghost more than anything. Her fate is to continue the fight from the shadows, to help her friend. It's literally all she has left.
Tumblr media
Sensei Ishikawa is someone trying to make up for the wrongdoings in his life. First there is the lingering darkness from the tragedy of Clan Nagao that forced him into resignation, and then there was the massacres from his student Tomoe. He had to learn to come to terms with both of them, enough to let Tomoe leave Tsushima. His fate is one of self-acceptance of his darkness, and comfort knowing that his final student is a hero to the people of Tsushima.
Tumblr media
Norio is very much like Yuna, losing his brother and having little left except to fight to protect his people. Unlike Yuna, he also has the respect as the leader of the warrior monks, effectively taking Enjo's role as the new Guardian of Tsushima. His final fate is bitterness and rage simmering in him after Enjo's death, but with time he may find peace again with his fellow monks.
All of these stories have to do with either loss or coming to peace with things. Everyone loses something or someone very close to them, and it pushes them to fight harder and ultimately they are forced to accept and move on. They are not happy endings by any means, but there is an air of a possible realm of hope or light at the end of the tunnel. They can get something.
Now, let's contrast that to Masako.
Tumblr media
Masako loses a LOT in this game as well. Her husband and sons are butchered on Komoda Beach, and she just finds the bodies and is forced to bury them. Her daughters-in-law and grandchildren are killed by assassins and she's forced to bury them on her own, including a defenseless baby. And overall, she is met with the backstabbing revelation that her own sister was responsible for the attack on her estate. She does find a previous servant alive, and it's heavily implied that they had a romance together. This is the only reference to Masako being gay (or bisexual, really). Yet, that servant is forced to leave as well for safety.
After losing everything and countless struggles against the Mongols and those who killed her family, Masako has nothing left except the bodies behind her. Revenge doesn't bring her comfort. She's left hollow and broken, and Jin's offer of friendship brings no solace. She commits to continue walking this path of darkness alone. Her ultimate fate is to be left with nothing for her. No family. No love. No peace.
This comes to my issue. I do recognize the value in seeing Masako as a gay character in a position of respect and authority. I see the value in her being a strong ally in the game. I see the value in her being a real person and not just outright giving her the best circumstances, and having to go through an arc of development.
My problem, however, is in notable contrast with every other main character's bittersweet ending, Masako's is entirely bleak. Everyone has something to hold on to: Jin, Yuna, and Norio are heroes of the people, and Shimura and Ishikawa find solace in the next generation. But Masako is left with nothing to truly live for.
The message from everyone else's story is "Do what you have to do, for a better future." The message for the gay character's story is "You'll be left alone, bitter, and utterly distraught in the end." That just never sat well with me, that the one gay main character has the absolute worst ending without a shred of hope. It just feels off.
Again, that is how I see it, but I'm open to discuss things if people want to.
