"Sports Illustrated Book of Horseback Riding", 1959. Written by Gordon S. Wright and Alice Higgins, illustrations by Sam Savitt
This book is kind of crazy, 60 years later:
Sports Illustrated doing something related to horses that isn't horse racing?
They didn't just get anyone to write it, they got Gordon S. Wright, who taught more Medal and Maclay Finals winners than anyone else.
They didn't just get anyone to illustrate it, they got the famous Sam Savitt
I suppose I just associate SI now with football and swimsuit models. It's not the sort of thing I could see them creating today (although, to be fair, I also haven't even looked at an issue of SI in years).

there's ponies and there's ponies
there’s ponies and there’s ponies
Swordwhale’s art critic corner… Back in the dark ages, there were lots of good horse artists, some fabulously great ones like Sam Savitt and Wesley Dennis. Artists who were horsemen and knew the anatomy, movements, body language and facial expressions of equines from horses to zebras. Any artist uses research, reference; drawing from life, photos, and now things like youtube and other videos. The…

When I was a kid I loved horses. I know, a little girl into horses? I had(still have) a shelf of Breyer horses, read Misty and all the Black Stallion books, taught myself how to draw horses from an excellent Sam Savitt book. I took riding lessons with friends up until ninth grade.
Then two things happened.  I learned to drive cars, and the 1989 Batman film came out.  And  I saw this.
Tumblr media
Forget the magazines with cute boys,....THIS beast of a machine became something I fell in love with. This replaced the Black Stallion for me.
Just look at it....even standing still it looks like it’s about to lunge into action. As dark and brooding as its master. As full of tricks, as ready to protect others as the Batman himself.
Every Batmobile is beautiful in in it’s own way, from the 1960′s tv show to the Justice League, but this one will always be my favorite.
