My own personal head cannon where Mr. Crisp is a younger man who's not sure what to do with himself, hes aromantic but hasn't got a word for it and he thinks theres something woefully wrong with him because he just... isnt able to form romantic relationships like hes seen others do.

The only person he does feel like he should be in love with is married to Crows so he finds himself in an odd predicament; somehow hes ended up with Jim Nicklebones, a man he is irritated to no ends with but is still somehow comforted by.
