Amazing things in Nature!
Nature continues to amaze us daily, by constantly adapting to the changing world around us. One amazing thing I know about nature is bioluminescence, it’s one of the most eye-catching things I have seen myself. While vacationing, I had the privilege of seeing bioluminescence on the beach while in the Caribbean. The water lights up beautifully as you run your feet through it, and the mechanisms behind how the water lights up is even more interesting. The bioluminescence we see is essentially a chemical reaction produced by living organisms, and involves luciferin (the light), and luciferase (the catalyst) (Bedolfe, 2012). The luciferase combines luciferin with oxygen to oxidise it, which creates oxyluciferin, and photons. The light we see is the result of the chemical reaction usually occurring in the organism, but it does not always occur inside it (Bedolfe, 2012). When I ran my hands through the water and disrupted the waves, the organisms present, called dinoflagellates, produce light as a defense mechanism (Aguilera, 2015). Here is a picture below of bioluminscence in action at night!
Tumblr media

An interesting fact I learned while diving more into this topic is that it only takes 15 milliseconds for the dinoflagellates to respond to stimuli! (Aguilera, 2015). It is extremely fascinating to think that the pretty glow I observed in the water was actually a warning from the dinoflagellates. It is also known that high levels of algal bloom are actually harmful to humans, and exposure to these phytoplanktons can cause skin irritation, and cause negative effects on ecosystems (Powell, 2022). There are different colours of bioluminescence that we can see, personally, I have seen a mix of green and blue light being produced. Another event caused by bioluminescent organisms are red tides, which are rare but can be seen more often now due to climate change. Red tides are lasting longer due to temperature changes, water pollutants, as well as severe weather events (Powell, 2022). I have never seen a red tide, but this picture below shows how they can appear to us, and it looks a little similar to an oil spill!
Tumblr media
Red tides are made of the same bioluminescent algal blooms that are responsible for the pretty green colours we see as well (Powell, 2022). It is important that we understand the importance of acknowledging events such as red tides, as these are natural warning signs from nature. Humans have a tendency to overlook a lot of unusual events in nature, which eventually can lead to disastrous climate change that is non-reversible. I enjoy seeing the beauty in nature, especially bioluminescence, and to conserve these organisms and keep our algae levels at health levels, it's important to take care of our oceans. Can you name other species that also use bioluminescence?

oc introduction: meet ‘em in the skies
hey y’all! this is a semi-formal introduction post to the women of meet ‘em in the skies, my Band of Brothers universe. thanks to @mercurygray and @shoshiwrites for giving me some guidance on how to structure this. my OCs are presented in alphabetical order by first name because that’s how my google doc sorted them. (there are also a lot of them so here’s a read more!)
Anita Kennedy Matthews, 18; from Harvey, IL
Youngest of seven girls, doesn’t often get the chance to be the first in her family to do something. Wants to do more with her life than sit around and wait to get married, so she volunteers for the paratroopers the day after she graduates high school. Loves to swim and go dancing. Dedicated to her friends, happy, and slightly naive. Has an unexpected reunion during training.
Coretta Bailey, 26; from Oakland, CA
A trailblazer. One of the first Black graduates of Scripps College, one of the first Black nurses accepted into the ANC, and the first Black nurse to report to the ETO for duty. Her parents would prefer her to be home, so she placates them by occasionally writing to a pilot she knew growing up, and he writes back, but she hopes no one thinks she’s serious about starting anything. There’s a war on. She’s beauty and she’s grace, refined, eloquent, poised, and determined to serve the men and women of her country to the best of her ability.
Doris “Trip” Davis Danes, 21; from Snowshoe, WV
Grew up hunting and farming in the woods with her younger sister while her father and older brothers worked in the coal mines. Shoots straight, doesn’t miss. Knows how to stick up for herself when threatened. Had to balance being the eldest daughter but the second youngest child with no mother in the house. The Army came and got her when the integration order went into effect. Only went to school through eighth grade.
Dorothy “Dot” Woods, 19; from Chicago, IL
City girl, loves heights. Grew up in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago’s infamous Black Belt, and loved it. Was a NYA kid and ended up as a switchboard operator at a phone company for a year and some change. Her dad fought in the Great War, her older brother’s 4F, so she decides to join up before they try to draft her. She’s willing to do the dirty work in order to win the war. She’s not happy about having to serve with non-Blacks, but she’ll do it.
Eleanor “Ellie” Gibbs, 20; from Billings, MT
Rancher’s daughter. Loves riding horses, knows how to shoot, pitch a tent, and collect freshwater. Used to go on cattle drives with her older brother and her dad. Went to boarding school on the East Coast but was sent back for disciplinary reasons. Wasn’t allowed to follow her brother to the Pacific, so she bribes some stable hands to sneak her out of the house and she joins the paratroopers. She’s a sweet talker with a smile like warm sunshine.
Estelle Brown, 18; from Austin, TX
Replacement who joined up to kick some ass but ended up a medic. She’s trying to roll with it. Was constantly in school-yard scraps and fights with her nine siblings growing up, so she learned to patch up her own cuts and bruises. Competitive dancer, competitive in everything, that’s why it was the paratroopers or nothing for her. She wants to be with the best. She’s as stubborn as they come, fiery, and vibrant. Chews gum like her life depends on it.
Florence “Flo” Kanaka’ole, 20; from Honolulu, HI
Showgirl turned soldier. Was in her family’s tourism business dancing and making crafts, and picked up gigs at some of the sailor’s nightclubs on Waikiki Beach so she could afford to live with some friends. Wanted to join up after Pearl Harbor to protect her homeland, and Army posters appealed to her. No more makeup, dresses, or fake smiles. Makes everyone learn to say her last name correctly. If they can say Eisenhower, they can say hers. Loves to sing ‘Ōlelo songs and she’ll dance for everyone when she’s drunk. Best friends with Frankie.
Frances “Frankie” Wilson, 19; from Baltimore, MD
Joins up because she’s bored. Her husband is off being a hotshot pilot in the Pacific, and she’s bored in her in-law’s house, getting no action—combat or physical. Quits her seamstress apprenticeship to join the paratroopers because she wants a challenge. Her good looks and perfectly tailored uniforms can be deceiving. Feisty, foul-mouthed, funny, and a shameless flirt. Will tailor your uniforms for money, doesn’t really care how much. Best friends with Flo.
Georgina M. Webster, 20; from Harlem, NY
Comes from an illustrious pedigree, constantly name drops her parents’ acquaintances and some of the people she knew in her youth. Wants everyone to know she’s a Radcliffe student but refuses to explain what that means to anyone who doesn’t already understand. Incredibly smart, whip quick wit, regularly complains about the poor quality of everything that the Army provides. Has no bedside manner. Storms every room she walks into.
Gloria “Glory” Davies, 19; from Memphis, TN
A gentle, sweet Southerner. Kind, soft-spoken, humble, not a mean bone in her body. Oldest of eight, dropped out of high school to help her parents run their restaurant. Wanted to join up when the war started, but was too afraid to leave her family for the unknown. Eventually worked up the courage and met Easy Company at Ft. Bragg. Loves music but is too shy to sing in front of others. Quickly becomes a favorite of Col. Sink’s.
Jeanne “Jeannie” Carmichael, 19; from Fruitland, GA
Comes to the Army with no strings attached. No family, no friends, no address. Just the clothes she has on and the few belongings in her bag. A quick learner, thinks fast on her feet, incredibly strong, good with her hands. Good memory on account that she can’t read. Has yet to learn how to people. Knows nothing of the world outside of her tiny farm town, and has to adjust to people with morals different than hers.
Josephine “Joey” O’Shaughnessy, 25; from Boston, MA
A red-headed fury. Is trying to get some heat off of her back after an incident at OCS by shaping her platoon into the best the Army has ever seen. Doesn’t have the time or patience to care about individual feelings, but always takes the time to help a soldier she sees struggling with a task. Refuses to leave a man behind. Believes in raising the lowest common denominator. Proud graduate of Spelman College. Best friends with Lil.
Lillian “Lil” Sikes Linetti, 22; from Atlantic City, NJ
Howard University Alumni. Got married at 18 and struggled to be a housewife after college. Believes the Army will give her something to do with her education and will give her space from her husband. The middle of five children all serving in the Armed Forces. Has always wanted to travel. Has a knack for maps and navigation. Mom friend, gets worried sometimes. Doesn’t put up with shenanigans. Best friends with Joey.
Matilda “Mattie” James, 17; from Pahokee, FL
Grew up as a migrant worker. Taught herself to sing and read music, soloist at her church, former music teacher. Wants to help her family move to Pittsburgh, where the Black community is growing and her dad’s family lives. Doesn’t tell her family that she’s joining up, or that she’s going with the paratroopers for the extra pay. Wants to fight so that her younger brothers won’t have to. Second youngest company member, and she’ll go after you if you bring it up. Wants to be treated like an adult. Faith is important to her.
Rose Robinson, 27; from San Francisco, CA
Though a New Yorker by birth, she spent her childhood and adolescence between San Francisco and Paris. Attended the Emma Willard School and Vassar College. Speaks several languages, loves baseball, and art. Joining up with the OSS puts her in close contact with her good friend Lewis Nixon over the course of the war.
Victoria “Bertie” Adams Albert, 19; from Green Bay, WI
Joins up when a recruiter comes into her family’s camera shop and asks if anyone would like to join the APS. Believes in telling stories honestly and truthfully. Will run directly into the line of fire for a picture. Easy to tease, but easy to apologize to. A bit idyllic, naive, young, in over her head at points. Trusts people in authority. Babbles when she’s nervous. Tries to use her camera as a shield but gets too attached anyway.
if you have any questions or would like to know more about any of them, please don’t hesitate to send me a message or send in an ask!

Mission Bay High Is Still San Diego Unified’s Least Local High School
Over years, San Diego Unified has countered a dwindling population within the Mission Bay cluster’s attendance boundaries with appealing programming that has drawn students from across the district.
Mission Bay High is something of an oddity. For at least a decade, data shows that only somewhere between 500 and 600 students have lived in the San Diego Unified high school’s attendance boundary. No big deal, you may think. That just means the high school is extra small compared to others in the district. But that’s where you’d be wrong.
State data shows that Mission Bay had nearly 1,200 students last year. That’s because about 61 percent of the students come from elsewhere in the district. That’s actually down from 69 percent back in 2014.
We’ve covered this anomaly for years and it still sparks our interest: https://voiceofsandiego.org/2010/12/05/an-inner-city-school-at-the-beach/
Mission Bay High’s Appeal
How did the high school appeal to so many non-local students, you might ask? By adding a little bit of “sizzle,” said former San Diego Unified board member Scott Barnett, whose subdistrict included the Mission Bay cluster.
That sizzle, Barnett said, was achieved in two ways. First, school officials would create unique educational opportunities. Second, they would make what Barnett called infrastructure improvements. The strategies, which began even before Barnett was elected in 2010, were meant to both convince neighborhood families to send their kids to Mission Bay instead of performance juggernauts like La Jolla High up the coast, and to draw students from outside the school’s attendance boundaries. After all, 600 kids isn’t enough to fill a high school.
The infrastructure improvements included a new field that designed to rival any other in the district and eventual campus renovations. (Voice of San Diego has previously covered how the district prioritized  stadium construction over classroom renovations, even while classroom ceilings leaked.)
The programmatic draws include Mission Bay’s renowned jazz band that performs in Japan each year and the prestigious International Baccalaureate curriculum. The school is one of only two San Diego Unified high schools to offer the curriculum.
But the efforts weren’t limited to Mission Bay High. A popular Mandarin immersion program was relocated to Mission Bay feeder school Barnard Elementary from the Point Loma cluster, where neighborhood students were more plentiful. The cluster’s Crown Point Junior Music Academy also draws families from outside the neighborhood. By funneling students into these unique programs at an early age, the hope is that they would stick around and attend Mission Bay High, much like the district’s hope with its UTK program.
“Beyond just relying on a very successful high school and improving the programs there, there has been … a lot of work by a lot of people over a lot of years,” Barnett said. “The goal was to build the foundation of a cluster where families who live there say … ‘look at my neighborhood opportunities, this is a great place for my kids to stay and go to school,’” he said.
In 2022, Mission Bay High drew around 74 percent of neighborhood kids to enroll. That’s not a perfect result. It places the high school in the middle of the pack when it comes to the district’s neighborhood enrollment rates. Some high schools draw nearly all neighborhood kids, like Scripps Ranch where 93 percent of local kids attend. But that 2022 number is an increase of around 10 percentage points since 2014.
But Mission Bay’s choice-heavy enrollment represents a tension in district philosophy. One the one hand, San Diego Unified has tried to create a quality school in every neighborhood in part, so kids will attend their local schools. The district, however, spent many earlier years encouraging the opposite. District officials encouraged parents to “choice” into schools outside their neighborhood. Despite the more recent push for strong neighborhood schools, Mission Bay High must continue to try to draw students from outside its boundaries, given the limited local population of students.
“To a certain extent this cuts against the grain of our effort to invest in neighborhood schools, but at the same time it’s a success story,” said current board member Cody Petterson, who was elected in 2022 to represent Barnett’s former subdistrict. “The district has done some admirable work in confronting a demographic reality with really high-quality, specialized and compelling programming that students and families love … and that allows us to maintain school sites that we might otherwise not have been able to maintain.”
What We’re Writing
The same high schools parents avoided eight years ago – ones with low test scores and high rates of poverty – are still struggling to increase enrollment from neighboring households.
Last year, data from the 2022 school year was released. There are a few upsides, like a reduction in chronic absenteeism. But test scores at San Diego Unified are still much lower than they were before the pandemic. *Reposted article from the VOSD by Jakob McWhinney on October 25, 2023

Waves along California’s Central Coast are getting bigger as human-caused climate change warms the planet, according to a new study published this week in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans.
Average winter wave height has increased by roughly one foot since 1970, the year that corresponds with global warming’s rapid acceleration, per the researchers.
And storms that produce waves measuring 13 feet high and taller have become more common, with twice as many of these events occurring between 1996 and 2016 as they did between 1949 and 1969, the researchers found. In recent years, those storms have occurred an average of 23 times each winter.
Taken together, the findings suggest that if average global temperatures continue to rise, California’s already threatened coast will be at an even greater risk of erosion and flooding as ocean water comes crashing in.
“It’s just one more indication that things are going in the wrong direction,” says Gary Griggs, an oceanographer at the University of California Santa Cruz who was not involved in the new research, to KSBW’s Ariana Jaso. “It’s like a giant chemistry experiment, only we can’t turn it off … waves are getting bigger, more powerful, the weather’s getting crazier. So that’s going to be more impact on the shoreline.”
To understand how waves have changed, study author Peter Bromirski, an oceanographer at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, analyzed 90 years of seismic data captured between 1931 and 2021.
Scientists have only been making direct wave height measurements along the California coast since 1980, so looking at seismic data allowed Bromirski to go back much further in time. Seismic data can be used as a proxy for wave height, because when waves crash down and rebound off the coast, they collide with new, incoming waves, sending energy down into the ocean floor, where seismographs are recording. More energy equals taller waves.
He wasn’t surprised when the data showed taller waves and more intense storms, as that tracks with the effects of global warming.
“Warming puts more energy into the atmosphere, and you end up with stronger storms, which produce stronger winds and higher waves,” he tells the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Gary Robbins.
California’s coastline is already vulnerable to sea-level rise, erosion, stormy weather and other effects of climate change. Cliffs and even roadways have collapsed because of erosion and mudslides, which creates dangerous and, at times, deadly situations.
Average sea levels have risen roughly eight inches along the Golden State’s coast over the last 100 years, per the California Coastal Commission.
And scientists say the situation is likely to get worse: By the year 2100, between 25 and 70 percent of California’s beaches may disappear completely due to erosion from rising sea levels. Property worth an estimated $8 billion to $10 billion could be underwater by the year 2050.
“Erosion, coastal flooding, damage to coastal infrastructure is… something that we’re seeing more frequently than in the past,” Bromirski tells the Associated Press’ Julie Watson. “And… combined with sea-level rise, bigger waves mean that is going to happen more often.”

How to Find a Perfect Place to Live?
It can be difficult to find a suitable 92129 Homes For Sale in the current market. If you do not have plenty of time to look around, the wide variety of properties that are offered may seem daunting. There are some good options out there, however you could choose to limit your search to the more prestigious neighborhoods. Consider carefully what features are most important to you as you begin your search for a new house. Keep an upbeat and curious attitude. Tumblr media
Do not think that realtors and brokers have exclusive access to the most desirable listings. There are 92131 Homes For Sale in the most prestigious neighborhoods. Most of these places do not publicize themselves. The houses sell themselves once you look at what they have to offer.
Get in touch with some more prestigious neighborhoods in your target location. Make an appointment to visit their model properties. The model attributes are intended to provide you with an accurate depiction of what is possible. Rather than looking at other areas where you would need to undergo extensive remodeling to achieve what you want in a property, you may choose from the luxurious Scripps Ranch homes that are now on the market.
Do not only focus on the houses; check around the neighborhood as well. Check out how the other owners are keeping up their properties. Do some looking around online when you make a call so you can learn more about the location. Locate the closest grocery store and schools. Locate the nearest major thoroughfares and highways. Once you know if Scripps Ranch Homes For Sale are near the locations you visit, you can decide if this is the right place to settle down with your family.
The information is also available via mobile devices. These days, mobile devices are the primary means by which Internet is accessed. A mobile phone's ancillary services can greatly improve your ability to conduct a targeted search. Furthermore, most of the best real estate sites have mobile-friendly versions of their sites, making mobile browsing more accessible than ever. Some smartphone applications even make it possible to search for available real estate. Many new Android phones have apps that are easy to use and can be downloaded in a flash. These apps provide easy access to comprehensive data about available homes in a certain area. You may also easily search for mortgages and compare rates of Rancho Penasquitos Homes For Sale.
