Founded by parun Mat'Selesnya, a female humanoid elemental formed via the fusion of dryads, the Selesnya Conclave is a decentralized collective variably described as a "selfless, nurturing, spiritual group" or a "brainwashing nature cult." It involves itself in the establishment and maintenance of peace, life, and unity in Ravnica. The territories held by the Selesnya are open and sunny, full of green spaces and gardens, with white stone buildings which are often open to the air. The towering world-tree of Vitu-Ghazi once served as the guild's Guildhall.
One area of Ravnica worldbuilding that I often find myself wondering about are the city's "outskirts." As far as we know, the plane of Ravnica is entirely covered by city. But even in modernmetropolises, the city limits usually include some parts that are not as built up as the center, or borderline countryside (like the mountainous western part of Tokyo prefecture). So could it be similar on Ravnica?
Most Ravnica sets are set within the tenth district, which is essentially the heart of the city - so the backgrounds are usually filled with buildings. However, there have been some instances where the environment seem less urban. Take this forest from Return to Ravnica, for example. It looks like the central districts are off in the distance, and the part that is shown here is slightly tending towards the "rural" side. This mountain from the same set also seems to show the city center giving way to a low-rise surburbia kind of region.
In MKM, there are another few examples: This forest, this Island, this Plains. Going by how Ravnica is usually portrayed, you'd expect to see a mass of huge spires on the horizon, but the sky is mostly empty here, and the buildings that are there are around four stories tall at their highest point. The art for Tolsimir, Midnight's Light also shows him standing in what seems to be an empty field (although since Vitu-Ghazi is visible in the distance, I suppose this is a smaller area that was leveled during the Phyrexian invasion).
The background on Griffnaut Tracker seems to give us another glimpse at "rural Ravnica." There's a huge spire and some city blocks on the right, but in the left, beyond the Selesnya Guildgate, you can see meadows and natural hills, with a river slowly winding through them. Clouds are obscuring the horizon, so I guess one could argue that this is supposed to show a big park, not the countryside. But it doesn't really look like a Selesnyan park, does it? If that was the case, I'd expect to see a lot more landscaping, trees and groves interwoven with architecture, etc. The background right here just looks like a stretch of not-built-over land that's maybe maintained by a few rangers.
Of course, I don't think Griffnaut Tracker (or any of the basic lands I mentioned) confirm the existence of a "rural Ravnica." It's still fully speculative at this point. However, I do like the idea that there are far-off parts of the city where the plane almost retains some of its original, natural surface. Having fringes like that makes the setting a bit more realistic/diverse. It's something that would be nice to see explored a bit in future visits to the plane - even if it's just in the background like here.
“Everyone who crosses that threshold is our most cherished friend.” “Everyone who crosses it again is our bitterest enemy…” “…Dornadon, what on Ravnica are you doing?”
The loxodon in question was frozen in fear under the massive guildgate. “Er, well, you told me to go get those supplies from the Golgari, but then you just said…”
Trostani rolled her eyes thrice over. “Dornadon.” “It’s a figure of speech.” “Just go.”
“Oh, a-and you won’t banish me or anything?”
“No,” Trostani groaned in unison. Dornadon gave a sharp salute in return.
“I won’t fail you, guildmaster…guildmasters!”
The elephant wheeled around and departed through the gate, leaving an exasperated Trostani conversing among herself in the plaza.
“I thought it was a fairly straightforward figure of speech.” “It is. Dornadon was just slow on the uptake.” “But still, maybe we shouldn’t keep on with that kind of rhetoric…”
Trostani leveled two glares at their wild-haired third. “What do you mean, Oba?” “Speak plainly.”
The abashed dryad scratched the back of her neck. “It’s just that, a lot of Ravnicans call us a cult. And, you know, what we just said kind of sounds…like a…”
“A cult? Don’t be ridiculous.” “We’re nothing like those senseless Rakdos.”
Oba shook her head. “I mean, I’m just playing devil’s advocate here, but I could see how one might draw some parallels between the cult of personality surrounding Lord Rakdos, and…how we revere Mat’Selesnya-“
“Bite your tongue, Oba!” “That is blasphemy!”
“…No. Too many people think badly of us for it to just mean nothing. I won’t stay silent on this.”
“Then we are at a stalemate.” “I hope you realize what this means for the guild, Oba.”
The third dryad nodded. “I do. But I think that having no leader is better than having one that blindly follows whatever Mat’Selesnya tells-”
Oba was interrupted by a punch to the jaw. Trostani’s other two dryads launched themselves at her, and she quickly defended herself, drawing the attention of the other Selesnyans in the plaza.
[The newer members of the Selesnya are often unsure of whether to refer to Trostani in the singular or plural.]
I was going to make a long hermitcraft theory-style post about how I think the Selesnya are evil and do bad stuff to people but then I did some research and turns out that's just Canon
I thought of my theory after finding this card's flavor text very suspicious
And then I checked out other cards' flavor text and they were also very suspicious, for instance (under cut bc this got long Anyway)
Camaraderie - "Within the song of Mat'Selesnya, one becomes all." Ah yes, one [being] becomes all [people], that doesn't sound sinister at all
Druid's Deliverance - "Selesnya's roots reach deep into the Worldsoul, and we will not be moved." Last I heard, "reaching" into a soul is, uh. Bad.
Dryad's Caress - "I awoke to the face of beauty, my body fully healed. In that moment I knew my destiny was the Conclave's to shape." Just because someone has healing powers, in a world full of people with magical powers, doesn't make that person automatically your leader. Either Rogad is, uh, not the smartest or there was a certain other power being used along with that healing...
Glare of Subdual - "The righteous light of Selesnya is channeled through the devout, striking out to blind the nonbelievers." Ok cultist
Hour of Reckoning - "Ravnica, like a hedge, must be pruned, leaving only leaves of verdant uniformity." Hedges thrive in the wild tho. Like without being pruned. Selesnya's the kind of guild to absolutely 404 when you try to explain the simple fact that Diversity Is Good. I bet they're homophobic too
Selesnya Guildgate - "The Selesnya welcome all to help heal the city's wounds. The price, however, is devotion to the guild and a selfless belief in Trostani." Oh, finally, a normal o- NOPE, CULT AGAIN!
Unflinching Courage - "As Trostani's influence grew, vitality spread throughout the Conclave much to the other guilds' dismay." Growing influence that people outside (the majority of people by far) don't like, HMM...
Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage - "Preachers of freedom forget that conformity can be beautiful." I- huh?? Do you hear yourself??? I genuinely hated typing that
Chorus of the Conclave - "We are many, yet one. We are separate in body, yet speak with a single voice. Join us in our chorus." Hivemind behavior
And they brand everything and everyone with their logo. Helmets, chestplates, tunics, even the armor they have custom built for wurms has the Selesnya sigil plastered all over it.
it kind of bug me that vraska was the guildleader card for this time on ravnica just because I collect the legendary selesnya & golgari creatures (+guildgates, signets, guildmages) each time around and now my binder has an empty slot where she should be because she’s 20$...
The Azorius Senate works alongside the Boros Legion and Selesnya Conclave to see to the enforcement of the law, and the Orzhov Syndicate to see to the provision of advocates and lawmages for accusers/claimants/complainants/plaintiffs and defendants.
“Kee! Kai! Careful!” The Selesnyan mother began to sweat as she beckoned to her twin children to stay near her. “That’s Gruul turf across the street, and an Orzhov bank up ahead…Kai? What are you looking at, there?”
One of the twins looked up in awe at the cracked stonework of the overgrown guildgate across the street, and the crimson guild banners hanging from the gate. He gave a jubilant cheer as a shaman standing under the gate gave him a confident wave. “Wow! That’s awesome! They look like they’re really good with nature, like us!”
Kai’s mother frowned. “Well, they technically are, but…”
“I want to join the Gruul when I’m older!”
“Absolutely not!”
“Why not?” Kai’s twin sister interjected. “We and the Gruul have a lot in common. Like Kai said, we all love nature! And we want to bring it to as much of Ravnica as we can.”
“Well, the Gruul and the Selesnya don’t see eye to eye on a lot of things…”
“Fine, then. What about the Orzhov?” Kee pointed at the cathedral up the street for emphasis. “They’re cleaner, and they want to bring order to Ravnica, just like us. Maybe not as selfless as the Selesnya, but still!”
Kee’s mother stared at her daughter. “Are you saying you’d like to join them?”
“What if I am?”
The mother sighed to herself. “I would be sad to see you both go…but if that’s your calling, that’s your calling. But! I’m making sure you’re both combat trained before you go anywhere near those guilds!”
“Don’t worry, Mom!” Kai chimed. “We’ve already been practicing with your and Dad’s weapons behind your- Ow! Kee, what was that for?”
Kai’s sister pulled her hand back from the slap. “You weren’t supposed to tell her!”
As the twins started arguing, their mother put a hand to her forehead. “Mat-Selesnya give me strength.”
[I bet the Selesnya out of all the guilds has the highest percentage of people who are born and raised in the guild, only to jump ship at the very first chance they get.]
