If I have to read ONE MORE TIME that Elinor Dashwood deserves a "stronger" man than Edward Ferrars...
Like excuse me? What exactly about Elinor Girlboss Dashwood's character implied that she wanted anything other than a malewife?

Austen asks! 4-24
I don't know if you intended this to be inclusive, but I'll answer them all anyway (skipping over the ones that have already been answered).
6. Favorite movie adaptation
The 1995 Sense and Sensibility. To me, it strikes a good balance between being a good adaptation and making the story accessible to audiences that haven't read the book, and it's one of the few that seems to understand Austen's humor and romance.
7. Favorite Austen couple
Anne and Wentworth. Their personalities balance each other perfectly.
8. Least favorite couple
Colonel Brandon and Marianne are so frustrating to me, mostly because of how Austen writes them. They fall victim to the Marian Halcombe Problem--if you spend the whole book showing a man and woman having tons of conversations and developing a good dynamic as equals, I'm not going to believe that he's in love with her sister.
9. Most hated foe of a heroine
Isabella Thorpe is a terrible person, and I can't think of any redeeming qualities or circumstances.
11. Least favorite book
I gained a better appreciation for Sense and Sensibility on my last reread, but it's still definitely Austen's weakest novel.
12. Least favorite Austen heroine
Marianne Dashwood is a realistic teenager, but not someone that I can admire or sympathize with too much.
14. Favorite love confession from the books
Can any Austen fan say anything other than The Letter in Persuasion?
16. Least favorite film adaptation
I hold a grudge against the 2005 Pride and Prejudice, because it did nothing to make me understand the appeal of Austen, and it's a horrible adaptation, but it has such a huge influence on fandom's interpretation of the novel.
Also, every once in a while, I remember the scene in the 2008 Sense and Sensibility where Brandon gives Willoughby a "stay away from my daughter" speech, and I shudder over how creepy it is.
17. Moment that made you sad/cry while reading
Basically any scene of Fanny Price's childhood.
18. Moment that made you smile/happy while reading
Henry Tilney's introduction scene in Northanger Abbey is just pure distilled joy.
19. Moment that made you laugh while reading
I'll never forget the time I laughed out loud in class while reading one of Miss Bates' speeches in Emma.
20. Moment that made you mad while reading
I don't know if I've ever been so mad for a heroine as I was during the scene where the neglected poor, orphaned, outsider Fanny watches everyone fawn over poor, orphaned outsider Mary Crawford.
22. Favorite Austen female casting decision
I love Tamsin Greig as Miss Bates in the 2009 Emma, because I did not imagine her talkativeness as stemming from anxiety, but it was fun to see her played that way and to experience a different interpretation that still felt valid.
I'm also going to take this opportunity to mention that I love Mrs. Jennings and Sir John Middleton in 1995's Sense and Sensibility. I just grin through every scene they're in, and I especially respect them after learning that they were the only cast members that Emma Thompson didn't have to write random extra dialogue for in crowd scenes, because they just naturally knew how to talk like Regency characters.
23. Favorite Austen male casting decision
I love Johnny Lee Miller as Mr. Knightley in 2009 Emma. I don't know if he matches the character in the novel, but I love how he portrayed the dynamic with Emma.
Also, Hugh Laurie as Mr. Palmer in 1995's Sense and Sensibility is perfection. And Greg Wise as Willoughby is beautiful and charming enough to do his job of fooling you into thinking he could be the romantic lead before he proves to be an utter cad.
24. Favorite supporting character
Mrs. Jennings. Hands-down. So vulgar, nosey, and over-the-top, but beneath it all, so kind and friendly and helpful. I love her so much.

[Text in Image: Wow, as a fan of your site and a former Literature teacher, I am really disappointed that you., purportedly also literature fans, have felt compelled to address trigger warnings' and issues in the books that you think might offend your readers Is this nonsense necessary? Do you really believe your readers will not be "okay" left to their own common sense and perspectives? And if your readers cannot handle reading the literature you have selected without your paternal ( or maternal) protection why on earth do you bother? If this is the case, stick to Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm and Nancy Drew. No triggers needed - although maybe you would find some, heaven only knows. This safe space stuff is inappropriate generally and in art, specifically. It's the precursor of censorship. What's the next step? Annotating the text(s) so readers' fragile sensibilties can be further protected? Deleting the offending passages? Editing the books? I really liked Dracula Daily and your online reading idea - but so sorry you have caved to the prevailing bizarro attitudes towards being "safe" won't be tuning in again
Sincerely,
PS. Your authors would laugh at what you're doing They'd laugh and then spin in their graves. And Dr. Watson would prescribe a tonic.]

i havent slept in over 24 hours bc of finals week so idk if this will make sense but
canon!steddie meeting modern!steddie
okay lemme explain
like. steve and/or eddie experiencing dimensional time shenanigans and ending up in a version of the modern day where there's modern versions of them and everyone they know
i just think the possibilities are very funny and cute and interesting like
80s!steddie x modern!steddie double dates, double the steddie for the price of one
modern!steve speedrunning 80s!steve's sexuality crisis bc he figured out he was bi years ago thanks to the internet, dustin's incessant research habit, and modern!robin's support (i need you to know modern robin has an undercut, it's not relevant to any plot ideas herein but it's important to me <3)
modern!eddie introducing 80s!eddie to more recent metal/rock (80s!eddie would go crazy for system of a down this is fact) + 80s!eddie's whole fashion and aesthetic driving modern!eddie nuts bc 'holy shit you're genuine vintage dude' lmao
the way i would i kill to see 80s!eddie or 80s!steve react to a smart phone (except modern!steve can't laugh because the walkman 80s!eddie has on him eludes him just as badly lol)
can you imagine 80s!steve reacting to like. WAP. or doja cat. pls it would be so funny. doubly so because he'd probably come to eventually like that genre of pop but my god his poor scandalized 1980s sensibilties
the possibilities for modern!steve's fashion are so funny bc 80s prep is so distinct from modern prep fashion, like i know in my heart modern!steve had a fuckboi phase in high school where he at least very much looked like one i know he did asffjsksk
also pre-relationship shenanigans that are absolutely ridiculous bc how tf you gonna be jealous of yourself from another dimension/time period?? 80s!eddie doesn't know but he sure is feeling some typa way about how friendly his steve is getting with eddie's doppelganger
meanwhile 80s!steve thinks modern!steve is so much cooler and has hit shit together so much better than he does (he very much does not, the modern era simply has better support systems for students who struggled to get into college + therapy is more readily available, rest assured modern!steve is just as big of a dingus), of course his eddie would wanna spend more time talking with the better steve
anyway i need steddie and i need funny time shenanigans. might fuck around and draw these idiots interacting. after i take a 3 day nap ofc.

Krisnix - Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibilty AU, for the prompts, please? 😉🌹
"You do not suppose me capable of real feeling-- do you, Klavier? I will admit that I do not wear my heart upon my sleeve as you do, but you are wrong to assume that it does not beat and burn and long just as fiercely as your own does. I have known of Mr. Edgeworth's prior claim for months now, and for those months, I have thought of little else than Phoe--than Mr. Wright and the regard that I still hold for him. But the family needs my strength and my resolve--not least after your own romantic disappointment--so I remain ever the sense to counterbalance your own sensibility."
Klavier said nothing in reply but placed a steady hand on his brother's shoulder, until Kristoph covered the hand with one of his own.
Send me a prompt and I'll write a 4-5 sentence drabble about it

Lap Dragons. 'Nuff Said.
Tumblr media
Ok, so: My immunocompromised ass got Covid in April (if you're medically able, wear masks y'all. Covid SUCKS and I only managed to avoid the hospital because I have enough experience and privilege to get what I need from the medical system relatively fast and painlessly. Don't spread Covid and try not to get it. Be safe, y'all), and when I was feeling ok-ish enough that laying in bed pretending to be a rock got way too boring, I picked up this book because I assumed it would be an easy, candy-floss read.
Which it was.
But that's not ALL it was. Let's talk Scales and Sensibility.
I was unexpectedly invested and thoroughly DELIGHTED by this book. It's essentially a standard regency romance novel but with the addition of lap dragons.
Ok, technically they're shoulder dragons, but the vibe is extremely lap kitty, and honestly in this house we STAN Sir Jessamyn.
Elinor is separated from her sisters and goes to live with her dickhead Uncle, arguably clinically depressed Aunt, and Queen Brat of a Cousin after the death of her parents, and her goal of being the "model poor relation" goes straight to hell within about the first five pages of the novel. Refusing to let poor Sir Jessamyn be abused by Cousin Penelope, Elinor basically kidnaps him, bails, and gets hit by a carriage before she makes it properly into town. This ends up being a meet cute with Mr. Benedict (seriously, regency romance novels really like having Benedicts in them) Hawkins. That's more or less all the plot you're going to get from me on this one, because I encourage you to read this delightful book.
In terms of other important things about the book, I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style. It tended toward light, fluffy, and endearing, but didn't shy away from a littled added heaviness when that was warranted, and the writing mirroring the tone so well is a skill that is rarer than you might think in genre fiction (*side eyes Brando Sando and his "invisible prose"*), but it just makes an already fun read feel stronger and more immersive.
Character-wise, Burgis created a stellar cast of clearly differentiated, personality-filled characters who I literally could not help but be deeply invested in by like, the end of chapter one. It can be easy in romance novels to let characters be more or less cardboard cutouts without much in the way of actual personality. This book DOES NOT have that problem. Elinor, Sir Jessamyn, Benedict, Penelope, and everyone else has vibrant personality that practically leaps off the page.
Finally, we have the dragons. The big dragons in this universe were, sadly, apparently hunted to extinction, leaving just the little dragons who can be trained up to sit on ladies' shoulders as a literal accessory. Sir Jessamyn is not cut out for this life, and Elinor is not a fan of turning living beings into literal fashion accessories. This is not unpacked terribly deeply in a systemic way, but as a synecdoche for assumed wider social and moral issues in the world, Sir Jessamyn serves quite well to sketch the broader picture by implication. This was such a fun idea to propose and immediately deconstruct, and I really enjoyed the draogny aspects of this novel.
If you're missing your fantasy regency romance fix this week, I cannot recommend a better solution that Stephanie Burgis's Scales and Sensibility. There is likely more to be said about this book as an homage to or gentle spoof of Austen's Sense and Sensibility, but as I have not actually read Sense and Sensibility, I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere on book internet for that content. I'm perfectly happy for now to enjoy Scales and Sensibilty on its own merits.

Jane Austen Summer, bby
In the past few months, I've been on a little project to watch (and re-watch) as many Austen adaptations as I can. This was sparked by my best-friend and I re-reading all the novels together. And then further ignited after watching A Very Bridget Jones' Persuasion (aka 2022 Persuasion with Dakota Johnson).
If you want to send me any asks about my adaptation thoughts ... I would not say no to that!
Thus far I have watched:
Pride and Prejudice (1995, BBC series, screenplay by Andrew Davies) Mansfield Park (1999, film, screenplay by Patricia Rozema) Mansfield Park (2007, ITV film, screenplay by Maggie Wadey) Sense and Sensibilty (1995, film, screenplay by Emma Thompson) Sense and Sensibility (2008, BBC series, screenplay by Andrew Davies) Emma* (1996, film, screenplay by Douglas McGrath) Emma (1996, ITV film, screenplay by Andrew Davies) Emma (2009, BBC series, screenplay by Sandy Welch) Emma* (2020, film, screenplay by Eleanor Catton) Northanger Abbey (2007, ITV film, screenplay by Andrew Davies) Persuasion* (2022, film, screenplay by Ronald Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow)
*denotes version I watched for the first time.
Next up are the '95 and '07 Persuasions (waiting on them from the library). And then I shall turn my attention to adaptations of Little Women.
Also, you may note that 2005 Pride and Prejudice is not on the list. No, I have not seen it. Yes, it's complicated.

This passage is one of my favorites in Sense & Sensibility because it is so deliciously petty of Fanny Dashwood. She has the Norland estate, she convinced her husband to essentially give the Dashwood girls nothing, and she's still bitter that they have a better plate set than her!
The furniture was all sent around by water. It chiefly consisted of household linen, plate, china, and books, with a handsome pianoforte of Marianne’s. Mrs. John Dashwood saw the packages depart with a sigh: she could not help feeling it hard that as Mrs. Dashwood’s income would be so trifling in comparison with their own, she should have any handsome article of furniture.
Funny as this is; Fanny will always been hollow and empty inside, because she is incapable of being content.

My AU Species/Races Face Close-Up (part 1)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wyverians (coming from the Monster Hunter Universe) :
Wyverians are recognizable for their pointy ears and four-fingered hands. Most of them possess digitigrade feet.
All of them have scales on their bodies, but they can have some on various parts of their body, as well as being any color.
They are the only race to have Alphas (20%) and Betas (80%).
All of them have at least one enhanced sense.
Some of them can have fangs, claws, or even a sharp tongue, though the last one is very rare. But the rarest thing to have for Wyverians is a tail.
They all have a Birth Mark that looks like a tatoo on their body. Most of the time, this mark pretty much became an emblem for them, mostly because it represents them since they are the only one to have it.
The lifespan in this race is very diverse : for example, some can be at their prime at 350 years old while some others are already very old.
Speaking of getting older, they get really tiny when they get very old ; they’re like the size of a small child.
Wyverians are considered to be one of the most beautiful races, and one that’s closest to Monsties.
It’s the males that become pregnant, so their g*nitals are reversed compared to others (though males also have it but it came out only during their heat).
Vastayans “Lhotlan Tribe” (coming from the League of Legends Universe) :
All Vastayan are chimeras between humans and animals. The Lhotlan tribe are human-bird chimeras.
Like a lot of birds, the males have very bright and colourful feathers and hair, while the females’s colours are dull and more tern, or darker.
All of them have fluffy feather ears ; they are pretty pointy and some of them goes up on their head.
All of them are born with at least one wing. It’s actually considered pretty rare to be born with a full set of wings.
Just like Wyverians, they are digitigrade, though all of them are and they have bird claws.
They all also have claws on their hands, and it can be a similar color to their feathers.
All of them have sharp eyes ; thanks to this, they have an enhanced sight. They also have the particularity to have arrow-like eyebrows.
All of them share the same sensibilty ; their ears.
Some of them have a feather tail, while some don’t have any.
They all have marks on skin, mostly on the face. They also have feathers growing on their skin too.
All of them can live for centuries.
Cloudsdalians :
The Cloudsdalians superficially ressembles Lhotlans since they are also bird chimeras.
They have wing-shaped ears as well as wings instead of arms, similar to harpies. Because of that, they have only a thumb.
Unlike Lhotlans, they all have a feather tail.
Only female Cloudsdalians are born. If you ever see a male Cloudsdalian, it was either created on a lab, or it was a female that has fully transitionned to male.
They also have bird claws like Lhotlans.
Changelings :
Changelings are one of the “evil” races that lives in this World.
Changelings are recognizable by their small and “broken” insect wings, ears that match the colours of their eyes, that could be either blue or green, a big deformed horn, sharp teeth and black dots all over their body.
Most of them have short and messy hair, some even shave them in a Mohawk or entirely.
Changelings can drain people’s vital energy to get stronger.
This race is mostly composed of males, there are almost no females among Changelings.
Changelings are said to be a race created by Oltura, so they are completely following Oltura’s will (when it’s alive of course).
Switcheroos :
Switcheroos are Changelings that doesn’t want to follow a dark path anymore, therefore they redeemed themselves.
This population is growing stronger whereas the Changelings are slowly disappearing since most of them wants to be peaceful.
They all have tatoos all over their bodies and they are the same colour as their eyes.
They are recognizable with their pale or beautiful colours, their “butterfly” horns and moth wings.
Unlike Changelings, the portion of female is equal to those of males. Most Changelings who turns into Switcheroos wants to turn into females, and that’s how they change gender while becoming a Swictheroo.
Another peculiar way to recognize them is their three diamonds on their neck?
Just like their evil counterparts, they have shapeshifting abilities.
Since they are redeemed Changelings, they still descend from Oltura. However, Oltura has less control over them since they are fighting against evil, and against their past-selves.
Crystallings :
Crystallings are said to be “immortal” beings. The reason behind this is because they have a longer childhood, and they mostly stay young adults. They grow older mostly when they are sad, and it’s really hard to make them sad.
They are a shiny race : shiny skin, shiny and bright hair. Plus they have hexagonal shaped eyes. They’re even said to be possibly the most beautiful race.
Speaking of their hair, all of them have wavy or curly hair.
They have the purest, and maybe even the strongest magic.
Their archenemies are the Umbrums. They are the total opposite since they always live inside the darkness, and they want to obliterate all the Crystallings, though they are peaceful but have no choice to fight them to survive.
To fight against their archenemies, Crystallings managed to learn the Umbrums’s magic.

i played namco museum on a crt television in a hotel room when i was a kid and i didnt play any of the games contained within or go to any of the exhibits and i feel like that game left an impression on my psyche ever since. the lobby area is devoid of any evidence of life and the music that’s playing is very sweet but bitter. it helps that i never saw it ever again after that until i saw my partner play it emulated over screenshare. it feels like it was designed to be half-remembered even when you’re playing it. kind of like some form of hell? it was cute. a lot of things i don’t feel like digging up images to describe give it this otherwise kitschy feel. all the rooms feel like ‘rooms’ in a museum, constructed like stages and there’s a sense of cohesion to everything, except for the game ‘toy pop’ where the exhibition room is an endless white void. everything about this game felt like a genuine encounter with the kind of aesthetic sensibilties that the youtube series ‘petscop’ was trying to encapsulate.
