i’ve seen a lot of people genuinely confused about shachi and penguin’s relationship in canon. i happen to be hyperfixated on them both, so i thought i’d write a post briefly explaining the origin of their bond!!

i think the confusion stems from the fact most one piece fans haven’t read law’s novel, and learned more about penguin and shachi exclusively through the wiki, which (despite the editors’ much appreciated work) sometimes lacks info. when the wiki says “their parents were killed in a tsunami” it doesn’t mean they share the same parents, as someone seems to think. this is clarified in law’s novel (thank you @/odaslaughtale for your translation!), in the paragraph where penguin opens up about their past.

plus, if they were related, i don’t think there would have been a point in specifying the people that took them in after the death of their parents were exclusively shachi’s relatives and not penguin’s.

we don’t know exactly when shachi and penguin met, but since their parents knew each other and it was normal for the two families to hang out together, it’s not a stretch to think they have known each other since birth due to their parents being friends or something like that. it warms my heart just thinking about it sorry

i obviously don’t have anything against people that see penguin and shachi as siblings; everyone is allowed to interpret the relationship between characters as they’d like (when no type of bond is explicitly stated in canon!!!), and exchanging ideas and headcanons is without doubt one of the best parts of fandom culture. however, i don’t want people to unknowingly spread misinformation, especially since law’s novel isn’t available in all languages and some may not have access to it. so i thought a post like this might be useful!!

4: Which one is more protective? Who needs to be ‘protected’?

Both of them need to be protected by Law 😂 No, they can fend for themselves (a little)... I don't see one as much more protective or in need of protection than the other tbh... I think maybe mentally, Shachi is a bit more protective. As in, Penguin gets intimidated maybe a little bit easier, and Shachi feels the need to stand up to people for him. Although, if you ask Penguin, he would tell you he is not easily intimidated and will stand up for himself. He might even tell you it's the other way around (and at rare times it can be). They stand up for each other when they need to, but I don't think either of them really needs to be protected by the other much.

6: Who would beg the other not to leave? Who has to leave to protect the other?

Oh geez, get angsty, will you? Okay, honestly, in this case, I'd say Penguin is the one who will leave to protect Shachi. But these two are a set. Do not seperate under any circumstances. They will not survive without the other. So, if Penguin would leave, he'd either be back soon because they cannot stay way from each other, or they will both die soon after, because of a broken heart. Not kidding. They will either die of a broken heart or die because they are so much weaker without the other.

10: Describe their first date.

Canon wise? I dunno if there ever was a first date. They'd be a classical friends-to-lovers case, where it just happens that they become more than just friends. If there is a date, it will be long after they've gotten together. At a certain point one of them (probably Peng) would be like 'We never really went on a date...' and they'd be like 'why don't we change that'. So, they go to some fancy restaurant, dinner by candle light, romantic music, and... it'd be suuuper awkward, because they don't have much special to tell, and this is not the environment they are comfortable in. They are always together already anyway, so they can always talk about whatever they want. They often have a moment where they can go somewhere with more privacy as well, so they can do lovey-dovey stuff without bothering the rest of the crew. A date really wasn't necessary, and they don't feel at ease in that restaurant. They make the best of it, but agree that it's not something they should repeat, probably.

I will answer the other asks you sent too (yes, I'll try to do them all), but it'll take some time. I don't want to spend half my day just answering these, so I'll do it in between stuff.

Ok, so I notice my answers about these two are a lot like... they're equal on a lot of levels. They just really match each other well, I think, in that they kinda look like each other, partly because they've been together for so long and grew up together?

But, to answer this question, I think they both like to tease, but Penguin is the bigger tease. Shachi is slightly more to the point, I think. But when the two of them gang up together to tease someone else... oooh they are the biggest tease you can imagine.

17: Who's more likely to pull the other in by the waist and kiss them passionately?

Shachi. I think Shachi has less restraint in that.

59: Who tops? Who bottoms?

I get your feelings of not seeing Penguin top anyone. I don't 100% agree. However, I do see Penguin as the biggest bottom ever 😂 in all the fanfics I've written, no one enjoys being a bottom so much as Penguin. That said, I can see Shachi as a bottom too, or at least a verse (bottom verse, probably). So, with these two, I'd say they change positions. There's not one who always bottoms or tops, even if Penguin probably bottoms more. Penguin probably bottoms about 70% of the time, giving the other 30% to Shachi.

That said, I want to say that I can totally see Penguin top Law as well. (not too often, but every now and then...)

Shachi. I see Shachi as slightly dirtier in general, and Penguin as slightly blushier. I don't think Peng could bring himself to say much that would be able to make Shachi blush. The other way around... probably, yeah. Even though I think the two of them feel really comfortable with each other, and Penguin would not blush as quickly as with anyone else.

38: Who is more sexually experimental? Who's more vanilla?

Oooohhhh ohohohoho.... in general, I see Penguin as kinda kinky. I don't know if experimental is necessarily the right word, as I feel he would be kind of hesitant to try things out, maybe, but if Shachi (or someone else, I can pretty much only see them have an open relationship) suggests something, he'd totally be up for it. I don't think I'd call Shachi vanilla, but... maybe a little less kinky than Penguin. A little 🤏

45: Can they fall asleep without the other?

No. Simple answer. They cannot. Not really, at least. They could like... snooze a bit, but they cannot fall into a deep, careless sleep without the other. Not even because they would worry about the other or whatever, but they just wouldn't feel at ease enough. It wouldn't feel right when the other is not there.
