the thing is, my awful little gremlin urge to lock Eric Kripke & Bryan Fuller in a room together and not let them out until they've drafted a full season of horror tv centered around intricate rituals between allegedly straight men? it is fundamentally motivated by the imp of the perverse. it's a desire to bring abominations into being.
and yet, somehow, despite the two impulses resonating on the same frequencies, my desire to rent a scenic isolated cabin for a month and invite Emily Nussbaum & Sheila O'Malley out there for a tandem binge-watch of six seasons each of The Americans and Supernatural, so they can exchange the most cosmic-brain takes on the tangled interplay of family, gaze, trauma, & erotic performance the astral plane has ever seen....... now THAT i want out of pure love for the world. whatever the FUCK thousands upon thousands of words of erudite hornyposting might result from that team-up, i want to bequeath the results unto humanity.

I looked up Sheila O'Malley's review of Jane of Lantern Hill and I want to share with you this paragraph (not really to do with Jane but how LMM wrote about PEI):
That kind of displacement was very familiar to Lucy Maud – who did not grow up with her biological parents – who was basically abandoned by her father, who went out West, and created a new family from scratch – leaving Lucy Maud at home to be raised by grandparents. And then – once Lucy Maud married The Lunatic Husband – he whisked her off to various cities and towns far far away from Prince Edward Island, and – I don’t know, this is just my impression – but I feel like she never ever reconciled herself to that geographical distance. She never got used to it. She never accepted it. Her entire soul and spirit yearned towards PEI and yet – til the end of her life – she never spent more than a month there at one time. People who experience their native land from exile often have a way deeper attachment to the soil than those who actually live there (see Joyce, see a bazillion others) … Lucy Maud Montgomery was no exception. She lived far away from PEI for 30 years. And yet where did the majority of her books take place? Prince Edward Island. No one who has read her books can be indifferent to PEI. She writes about it with such love, such specificity – it’s not a romanticized view, not exactly. To her, it felt like reality. There was no place on earth as beautiful or as desirable as PEI. So you wonder if she would have written about it so well if she had lived on PEI all that time. Perhaps exile sharpened her senses, her memory.
Sheila also highlights how Jane's dad talks to her about the Bible and makes her love it, despite her previously finding it a boring chore, bc of the way the grandmother was bringing her up.

I have a very silly crack au I've been calling 'Milf Sheila au' which is pretty much just. Tex brings all the ai to bloodgulch and Sheila adopts Theta. Eventually the other ai too. Sheila, Church, and North have to figure out a split custody agreement (North argues that since Church and Sheila live together with the rest of the blues there should be a 50/50 split on time. Sheila and Church think it should be 66/33 split so they each individually get the same amount of time with Theta). When Theta is with Sheila he goes in a little rc car. Sarge keeps offering to mod the rc car and add weapons to it.

Cut to the Blues watching Lopez fix Sheila. Caboose is hopping up and down.
Caboose: Hurry hurry hurry, fix the tank! (stops hopping) So that I can say hello to Sheila.
O'Malley: (closeup of Caboose's visor) And start killing everyone!
Tucker: You mean all the Reds, right?
Caboose: (perky) Of course!
O'Malley: For starters...
Church: Come on, how much longer, Lopez?
Lopez: Completo. (steps off as the tank starts)
Sheila: Thank you for activating the M808V Main Battle Tank.
Caboose: Sheila! You're fixed! You're fixed!
Sheila: Hello, Private Caboose. It is good to see you again. Thank you for repairing me.
Tucker: He didn't fix you. Our robot did it.
O'Malley: Don't cock block me!
Tucker: Dude, come on.
Sheila: Robot? I wasn't aware that our squad was outfitted with a robot.
Lopez and Sheila slowly make eye contact, romantic harp music plays.
Caboose: I don't like where this is going.
Sheila: Hello there. My name is Sheila. The M808V Main Battle Tank.
Lopez:Y yo soy López, el Pesado. (captioned) And I am Lopez, the heavy.
Sheila: Lopez, what a nice name for such a nice soldier. You have such excellent motor skills.
Caboose: Umm, yes! Well, Lopez has to go now. He was just here to help me fix you and now he has to go AWAY.
Tucker: Dude, this is getting weird. Church, will you take your fucking body back?
Church: Roger that.
Lopez: No! Heauegerkergerk! (captioned) No! Heauegerkergerk! (Lopez's body twitches as Church enters it)
Tucker: You okay in there, Church? Church, hey what's going on? Do I need to flip your switch?
Church: (reappears) What the-? That wasn't me. What the hell's going on here?
Tex: (possessing Lopez) Well, buenos dias, cockbites. Guess who's back?

Personal highlights from...
Red vs Blue The Ultimate Fan Guide
In honor of s19 and the continuation of where s13 left off, here are some highlights from the ultimate fan guide published back in 2015. I've been re-watching the show and it made me want to flip back through the guide. (Everything is sort of in the order it appears in the book, with a few exceptions)
Delta appears as a guide of sorts with fun facts
Caboose's position is listed as "Team Rookie/Occasional Captain/ Church's Best Friend" (it is actually struck out in the book)
He is also the only one listed with the title Captain, appearing as "Private/Captain Michael J. Caboose" (due to Wash "promoting" him, in the canyon on chorus)
Tucker is "Private First Class", Church, Donut, and Simmons are "Private"s, Sarge is listed as a "Colonel" under rank (the other Red's and Blue's ranks appears with their name while his is under "position"), and Grif is "Minor Junior Private, Negative First Class"
Wash used to be a chronic bed wetter (thanks D)
There's also a six page transcript of his psych eval prior to PF where we find out he injured a commanding officer because he wanted to "send everyone to their deaths", he also put a former bully through a mirror in fifth-grade
Grif is stated to have been assigned to Blood Gulch because he was the only survivor of an alien attack on a colony during the great war, he fell asleep at his post and everyone assumed he was KIA
Donut's position is listed as "On all fours... cleaning Red bade"
Doc's profile is "Doc/ O'Malley" and the whole thing lists both their interests, i.e "Position: Canyon Medic, Galactic Overlord"
Andy's (the bomb) name is "Andrew D. Kaboom"
Sheila and Filss share a page
Tex's notable attributes are "Kicking ass (and nuts), being a mean lady, and resurrection"
The password to unlock the file on Beta that CT left behind was "Allison" (Thanks again D)
York's page comments "Several reports were filed against Agent York claiming he and Agent Carolina had something of a "personal" relationship [...] Freelancer Command was unable to find any proof to support these accusations."
One of his notable attributes is "watching his right side" and his position is "team scoundrel"
Eta and iota (Carolina's AIs) were "fear and happiness"
According to the official time line, Carolina was around 6 when Allison died (Allison died 23 years before Blood Gulch and Carolina was born 29 years before)
Wyoming's real name is Reginald
South Dakota's Status is listed as "Extra Crispy"
Smith once spent two days contemplating in silence what Caboose meant when he said his favorite color was "Happy"
Dr. Grey's position is "(Mad) Doctor", she was considered a prodigy at age 11 when she diagnosed every patient in House M.D. within five minutes of their introduction, and she thinks Grey's Anatomy is "far too trite"
Felix and Locus' names are listed as Unknown in the book, but I do believe their names were revealed in a s14 episode
The counselor advised the director to tell Tex that Alpha was in Blood Gulch to protect him and stop her from investigating the project
Notable Features of Blood Gulch include "Avoid Tucker's Rock at all costs, as it has not been properly sterilized"
BTS from D: The opening shot of Season 6 was created by shooting players moving in different quadrants and combining the shots"
Important events at High Ground, "Washington killed Agent south in cold blood- with a much less cold flamethrower."
Fact from D: "Once a year, Reds and Blues stationed at Rat's Nest still pay tribute to Agent Alabama by sending a flaming mongoose soaring through the night sky."
Donut likes to spend his leisure time in Federal Army Outpost 37, in the jail cells in handcuffs
The statistics pages, 9 pages of stats from number of robots murdered (112) to Church's sniper rifle accuracy (9.3%)
Bow Chicka Bow Wow was first said in season 4, and Simmons never sucked up in season 12, season one had the most "son of a bitch"s at 14 Donut made 32 accidental innuendos, and the odd number of pedals in vehicles was called out on five occasions Tucker has the highest kill count of all reds and blues (counting wash and Tex), at 24 followed by donut at 22 and Tex at 21, Caboose is the lowest at 2 raised by Lopez and 3 and Church at 8 Sarge has threatened/wished death on Grif 56 times, and Donut has nearly died five times Seasons 2 and 9 had the lowest kill counts Carolina had the highest flash back kills at 68 in season ten, and the twins are tied at 23 kills in season nine
Tex's attack to free Alpha was 2 years before Blood Gulch, the great war ended 1 year after Alpha arrived in Blood Gulch and after the Wyoming incident in Blood Gulch (where they tried to kidnap junior), Chorus takes place 5 years after Alpha initially arrived in Blood Gulch
The mission books has adorable illustrations (they look like Caboose's guides from s14)
There's a mindmap for all the Leonard and Allison iterations and they they connect
Sarge has a guide on how to build a robot, scented lube is preferred, along with mad scientist goggles, a cup of baking soda, and seventeen tablespoons of sugar
More silly plans with fun diagrams
Donut's diary, D tells us that Donut washes his underwear on tuesday's
Caboose's Wisdom section on: feelings, relationships, army etiquette (including gems like crayons don't work as bullets. Use markers.), life, and the reds and blues
Simmons made a text based adventure games
BTS from D, the story of Simmons refusing to go to the Vegas Quadrant is a reference to Gus Sorola (Simmons' VA) refusing to go to Las Vegas with the rest of the rvb creators
You can find the case against Sergeant Grif from the reds at rat's Nest (he was selling red team's ammo to Caboose before he was locked up in the brig, Private Jones wore a wire tap to help the red's catch Grif's under the table dealings)
Leonard met Allison in the mess hall during basic training where he pissed off another recruit and Allison had to save his ass (Church was right, Carolina get's her temper from her mom)
I'm Church. private Church. Leonard. Leonard Church." the only thing I cared about in that moment was that she knew my name. She smiled. Her smile could light up solar systems. "Kind of a funny name. Church." "It's Jewish."
I spent the rest of basic chasing after her. In some ways, I never stopped.
Here's hoping non of our beloved idiots die in season 19! I mean, I know Church will be gone, but the others... they deserve a happy ending.
Also I miss the freelancers and AI...

that sheila o'malley line in the Dead Man's Blood recap about john, the widower, looming over the vampire couple's marital bed, like a home invader or rapist or death omen...
idk, just thinking about it while watching sam in the s3 finale, stealing into a nursery and looming over a mother and her demon-touched child with a knife in his hand
(gently & pre-emptively trapping bad-faith responses to this situational echo under a cup and releasing them outside... no, it is not some attempt to Make A Point at sam's expense, the fucked-upness and struggle of it is narratively sexy to me. for the love of god. i think i've been around this fandom too long already if i feel the need to anticipate & articulate any of this.)

I was looking for Sheila's recaps of LM Montgomery's books (using Google rather than searching through her blog as they are quite old) and this twitter thread came up in the results. I thought it was interesting. This is also re Russian Doll which was out around that time and mentions Emily of New Moon.

This is old news, but I just read it for the first time and really loved it:
Rewatching Supernatural has been an interesting experience. I first watched most of it (from the start of season 2 on) in real time as it aired, and I have to admit that I did not take it very seriously. I gave it no thought whatsoever between episodes, and thought of it as an hour of indulgence in something dumb and pretty: two handsome brothers and their angel who fought monsters and melodrama every week. I never missed an episode and did love it, but I didn't truly engage with it.
It seems, however, that Supernatural worked on me in some kind of subterranean, unconscious way, because when it ended, I found I couldn't let it go. Part of that was the terrible narrative malpractice of its ending, but when I really thought about it, I realised that I also just missed Dean. He had been a weekly visitor for more than a decade, and I just didn't want my time with him to be over. I started watching Supernatural again, and the experience has been really interesting. A lot of things about my perception of it have shifted, and one of the main shifts has been in my apprehension of the serious artistic intelligence, nigh-on unbelievable range, and sheer excellence of Jensen Ackles' performance of Dean.
I keep thinking about what an incredible undertaking Dean is -- a 15-year-long development of one character! About how different the actor who played Dean in episode one is from the actor who played Dean in episode 325. How age, experience, and depth are reflected in both the character and the performance. It is just impossible to watch it and not see that there is an incredible evolution there, and at the same time, a kind of devastating psychological and emotional continuity.
Supernatural is a show that requires you to suspend disbelief and agree to go along with it. It can be silly and schlocky, and it's emotional strokes are often broad ones. It started airing in a time when our society was very different from the way it is now on issues surrounding social justice and inclusion. It isn't 'prestige TV' and it puts on no airs of being anything beyond what it is, but when the whole story is in your mind and you revisit it, and you aren't engaged with taking in plot and anticipating (or desiring) outcomes, you start noticing its subtlety, its themes, motifs and story parallels, the liminal spaces of its setting, the subtler play of emotion in moments without dialogue, and it starts to feel much deeper, more epic and just straight up BETTER than you ever thought it was.
All of that is mirrored in Jensen's performance. He grew into Dean and grew into an artist who could play Dean. He's not afraid of a little schtick, he's very capable of being obvious, but he's even better at the subtleties that allow Dean's inner life to rise up in his face without words. I love how this article positions Jensen's performance as being like that of so many classic film stars, the idea that he used his own essence -- the full range of his psychology, emotions and physicality with skill and intention to achieve what he did with Dean. His long commitment to and investment in the character, and the way he fully embodies Dean because Dean is a character that he built from pieces of himself.
Anyway. I have a lot of respect for his work. I love Dean and think he is magnificent. I hope Jensen Ackles knows how good he is, and is suitably proud of himself, and I am very grateful to hear that by all accounts, Dean is not over for him, because Dean is not over for me.
Sheila O'Malley wrote a few really nice pieces about Jensen's performance as Dean and one about Soldier Boy, and I recommend them. Very much enjoyed.
