Nature and Young Adult Lit
This may be a strange slightly rambling post, but one thing led to another. As I bicycle to work each day, there are several oak trees to pass which means that lately there are many, many acorns to dodge. Recently on Threads, author Jen Ferguson [Those Pink Mountain Nights] mentioned having a load of acorns raining down on the roof. This got me thinking about the chapter in Braiding Sweetgrass when the author's grandfather gathers up pecans during a year with an extraordinarily large crop. That story is a good one and may be found here. From there I leapt to thinking about nature and young adult lit because that's what my brain does.
Obviously, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer and Monique Gray Smith was the first young adult book that came to mind. It's a beautiful memoir with a look at Indigenous science and the natural world. The illustrations by Nicole Neidhardt are fantastic and make it an excellent book to pour over. See our review here.
This led me to thinking about Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley. In it, the main character has learned about nature through Indigenous teachings, but also through schooling and texts. There were parallels between Kimmerer's lived experience and the fictional account of Daunis. You can learn more about the book in our Group Discussion.
Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute by Talia Hibbert is a book that that involves the outdoors and romance. We had a Group Discussion for this one too. In that discussion, Jessica mentioned Alexis Nicole Nelson, also known as The Black Forager. Looking at the acorns around me I wondered if she had done a video about them and yup, that is a thing she's collected and talked about. I don't know if she will be writing a book for young adults anytime soon, but for now, there is an incredible amount of video content on Tiktok, Instagram, and YouTube including the relatively new Crash Course Botany class.
Reflecting on nature, there is an awful lot of things that can go wrong so there are also quite a few dystopian and sci-fi books that are concerned with the environment, disasters, and climate change.
The Parable of the Sower: A Graphic Novel Adaptation is based on Octavia E. Butler’s novel of the same name and is by Damian Duffy and John Jennings. The story follows a young girl as she navigates a world that is in severe distress. She is not only trying to survive, but she is contemplating faith and what it means to her and what it could look like for others.
The Ones We're Meant to Find by Joan He is another survival type of story in the midst of natural disasters due to climate change. The story revolves around two sisters.
Want by Cindy Pon really digs into the economic disparities in relation to climate change and environmental issues. It's set in Taipei not too far in the future. You can read more about this awesome book in our Group Discussion.
Orleans by Sherrie L. Smith is an older title, but also delves into some of these issues of the environment and economic disparities. Here is our review.
Are there other books about nature and the environment that you think we've missed or should watch for in the future?

[FACTUAL STORY]
ELVIS, ice cream and the long black limousine
PHOTO 1: Elvis Presley and leaving the Omni Coliseum in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 3, 1973. | PHOTO 2: Actress Sherry Boucher.
Billy Field, an instructor in the Honors College at the University of Alabama, traveled far from his hometown of Sylacauga, acting, writing and working in TV and film, before returning to his alma mater to teach screenwriting and film production. From days at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute (the method-acting school), he met actress Savannah Smith Boucher, who became a lifelong friend. He began to tell a story recounted by his friend's sister, Sherry Boucher, but then she called to re-tell it, first person. Boucher was once married to George Peppard, star from "Breakfast at Tiffany's" to "The A-Team," but her Elvis encounter preceded that.
Here it goes: In '73, while modeling for a car ad in Palm Springs, California, Sherry Boucher took an afternoon snack break from the desert heat. "... I was so excited about getting this ice cream," she said. As she walked, reveling in the cone, a man who she thinks was Elvis' longtime friend, Red "Sonny" West stepped up and spoke: "'There's a man in that car who wants to speak to you.'" But her folks back in Louisiana raised the kids right. She knew better than to approach strange men in cars, even if that vehicle was a star's long black limousine. She couldn't see through the windows. Possibly Red said: "You just have to walk on the sidewalk. Really, it's OK." "I'm licking this ice cream, and it's melting down my arm. I peep over, lean over, and look in the window; he rolls the window down. He went 'Hello, I'm Elvis Presley. You wanna sit down? Maybe we can get you something to help you with that'" overflowing ice cream. "I was thinking 'Oh my God.' Trying to be cool, trying to be not affected. He opens the door, and says 'You don't have to get in the car; we'll leave the door open.'" So instead of taking a seat with Elvis, Boucher sat on the edge of the limo's open door, both feet sensibly on the ground. As a young model and actress, she wasn't new to compliments, and comparisons: Depending on how her hair was styled, people would mention Natalie Wood, or Ann-Margret, though she didn't see the resemblances. But from her corona of long dark hair, Elvis pictured somebody else: The woman he was divorcing, mother of his only child. "He just had such a sad look on his face, and I said 'Are you all right?' He just looked at me, and I said 'You think I look her, don't you?' He said 'You do look like her.' And I said 'Well. I'm not her.'" She stuck out an ice-cream sticky hand, as if to shake, then had another thought. Asking for something to write on, she scribbled the phone number of her dad, Jesse Boucher. "I said, 'If you need anybody to talk to, my dad is unbelievable. He's great to talk to.' I said 'Mr. Presley,' and he looked at me and said 'Elvis.' I said, 'OK, Mr. Elvis, if you want to talk to my daddy, there's nobody better.' " "He was nothing but nice, but it was a very sad meeting," said Boucher, who after Hollywood days moved back to Louisiana. "I can't believe I was such a banana-head, to give him my dad's number." [comic review] avatar: tsu’tey’s path (2019)
writer: sherri l. smith artists: jan duursema & dan parsons
this is basically a slightly better version of the movie with stunningly gorgeous art. like, some of the best art i’ve ever seen in a comic. and i get that the movie probably had to be what it was to be the colossal blockbuster it was, but heck i like this so much better.
it even has a much, much better version of jake becoming the leader of the omatikaya. i mean, i still think it’s a bad idea, and jake is still toruk makto which is still pretty infuriating. like, why does this dumbass who was one of the sky people literally yesterday have to be the Best Na’vi Ever?
but i’m going to have to get past that eventually, right? i’m really just complaining about avatar (2009) at this point. and just, again, this comic is a huge improvement on that specific aspect. given that it’s a retelling of the events of the film from a different perspective, it can’t escape that big, obvious glaring problem with the movie, but it does at least mitigate it somewhat.
i was hoping for more of the same in the movies, and frankly the way of water largely let me down on that score, but here’s hoping. granted i don’t really see them pivoting away from jake being the main character. maybe they’ll at least do more comics like this from various na’vi people’s povs. that would be nice.

Description
It has been almost a decade since the humans were forced to leave Pandora?but now they?re returning?with an armada of heavily-armed starships! After years of peace, Jake Sully has settled down with Neytiri and raised a family, so for him, the stakes are even higher than when he first went to war against the corporate might of the RDA. During the development process of creating the four Avatar sequels, a lot of new ideas and stories were created and discussed. One such EPIC original story idea that didn?t make it into the sequels was James Cameron?s original story??The High Ground.? Cameron shared what he had written with Dark Horse Comics and it is now being adapted by award-winning author Sherri L. Smith (The Toymaker?s Apprentice, Orleans), and illustrated by Brazilian artist Guilherme Balbi. Avatar: The High Ground Volume 1 ventures into all-new territory in the Avatar saga, and is a direct prequel to the highly-anticipated film sequel Avatar 2!

favourite books you read this year? least favourite?
Ahhh thanks for the ask!!
Favourites!!! All of these books are SO SO SO good especially the first two:
Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo
The Blossom and the Firefly by Sherri L. Smith
And I haven't finished them yet but I've been loving the My Hero Academia: Vigilantes manga
Least favourites:
The Maid by Nita Prose. This was easily the worst book I've read all year. Honestly might be the worst book I've read in the past few years. I found it extremely juvenile and badly edited. Worst of all I found it's portrayal of an autistic character absolutely awful and insulting. Glad I saw a lot of reviews that agreed. Don't read this.
NewsPrints and EndGames by Ru Xu. I had wanted to check out these middle grade graphic novels for a few years but was left disappointed. I think it had a lot of potential but the worldbuilding and characters felt very flat. I wish that the story was fleshed out more. The second book was especially boring. I acknowledge that I'm not the target age demographic for this story but I still think it could have been better.
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
This one honestly wasn't awful or anything. I gave it a neutral 3 out of 5 stars. But I thought it was going to be a favourite. It left me so disappointed after hearing so much praise for YEARS. I really don't get the hype for this one tbh. I found the characters annoying and the story boring. I'm in the minority for this so it's definitely a me problem and not the book.

Last Movie / Show: Teen Titans GO! vs Teen Titans
Recent Read: Orleans by Sherri L. Smith, My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult, Harvesting the Heart by Jodi Picoult, American Gods by Neil Gaiman
Inspiration: Is it cheesy to say all the great writers I’ve seen on here? Like I mean I get a lil inspired by music but most of the times I’m more inspired by talking/reading things by other people. And I just let things flow from there.
Story behind your URL: I honestly don’t know why I chose get-dusted. I just was like I’m gonna play a funny lil guy who’s going to probably cause shenanigans and I like the idea that Angel would sometimes shout GET DUSTED! at people when he’s pranked them, sorta like high school kids yelling Get Dunked On, except he’s not that cool.
Fun Fact: I make no sew blankets! I write poems! Oh, and I lost a fingertip to a door as a small child and regrew it, which is why I thought my mom nicknamed me Newt, but it turns out that she was calling me Newt as in Newt from Aliens. I didn’t learn that until I was 19 almost 20.

Weird and Wonderful Wednesday
Tumblr media
I’ve loved Captain Marvel (and Carol Danvers’ incarnation of Ms. Marvel before that) since she’s existed in her current incarnation. And, so, this book was so much fun. It takes on a different time in Carol Danvers life, her time at the US Air Force flight school. In this case it’s about her first year at flight school. It’s not easy for her (which is really cool to see) and, she meets Maria Rambeau. So exciting, so exciting.
I think that this was supposed to sorta be a prequel to the first Captain Marvel movie, and, it does sort of work as that. But, honestly, it works without the movie as well. And, the Captain Marvel lover in me, as well as the Stargate SG-1 fan too (also an ‘Air Force fandom’) just tore through this YA book. So good.
You may like this book If you Liked: Breaking Sky by Cory McCarthy, Black Widow by Kelly Thompson, or Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith
