I’ve really been at a loss as to what I should to with Rain, my darigan buzz. She has a cool backstory as a soldier in the Meridell-Darigan wars, but it always seemed to stop there. What has she been doing since then? I’m not sure, but then I also realized that I didn’t know what the state of things was for the Darigan Citadel either.
The lore for these lands kind of stops at some point, and while they can be used as is as a Medieval setting, that doesn’t interest me much. Instead, what I’ve found recently is that I’m way more interested in exploring the Citadel, Meridell, and Brightgale as they adapt to this new world around them.
I don’t want to trail off too much, besides I’m still figuring things out, but here’s how I see it.
The Citadel:
had a short period of isolationism (Lord Kass era), but has since been interested in connecting with the rest of Neopia. There’s a strong sentiment that what lies forward must be better than what they’re leaving behind
uses sigilmancy, magically imbued symbols, to run automated processes. in a sense, magic is the backbone of darigan technology. it is precise, utilitarian, applied. think steampunk but replace steam by magic?
has trouble with food scarcity and relies a lot on imports to feed its populace. there’s continued interest in finding ways to farm on the citadel, but a newer initiative has darigans farming the land below, unfortunately reigniting tensions with Meridell
The Kingdom of Brightvale:
true to their values, Brightvale had an instant interest in the outside world, intent on integrating new knowledge and technology and have since become forerunners in certain fields
think Renaissance era but with some low key sci-fi
some electronics tend to malfunction in certain parts of Brightvale due to interference from an unknown source. it’s a mystery preoccupying many Brightvale scholars
has an effective but incredibly confusing bureaucracy
reflects the best from European intellectual currents, chiefly the Renaissance and Enlightenment... meaning there are those who have started to question monarchy
The Kingdom of Meridell:
resists mingling with the frightening outside world. there is a large disparity in wealth, education, and access to information
Most don’t actually know the truth behind the Meridell-Darigan wars. Some believe the Darigans have always looked the way they do, reflecting their inherently evil nature. The misinformation of the Meridellian masses has unfortunately shaped the popular beliefs held by the rest of neopia
International events such as yooyuball is reserved for the elite
It’s easier to govern over the uneducated masses, but it’s also a question of Meridell rejecting anything that goes against their beliefs. there is a secret police entrusted with maintaining the ideological purity of the land
it is said that electronics break the moment they enter Meridell, but as they are forbidden you probably shouldn’t try to see it for yourself unless you want to lose your visitor’s pass (or worse?)
if Brightvale is the best of Olde Medieval Europe intellectual currents, then guess what Meridell is lmao

AU: Fantasy
This is a sort of homespace for me as the Mun, as a vast majority of my older RPs occur in a verse like this in some way or another. I have a soft spot for magic.
Sam will be.. a bit different. Her personality will be the same. Calm, sarcastic, sincere when it serves a purpose. She at her core will be the same, her physical stats will be largely the same. Everything else though? Eh.
Name: Samhael Mirinae
Age: Variable
Occupation: Herbalist, primarily, though she’s known to do a bit of Sigilmancy, Astromancy, and Midwifery.
Educational Background: a handful of apprenticeships, one totaling to the better part of ten years, a fair bit of personal experience, and a number of emergencies requiring the use of her skills, theories, and Magework.
Home: Half a day outside of Allophel Village, a common farming community, her mother lives three days’ ride away in Faedhel, a fishing community on one of the river junctions.
Tattoos: Sigils line her skin for protection, clear mindedness, steady hands, courage, and a long list of other qualities. These are often charged through her Astromancy.
Personal Background: Her parents were part of the Sageic and Bardic orders of their village’s magickal community, but her father’s temper left him cursed to an early grave for the destruction of Ritual Property, and her mother traveled to another village in hopes of beginning anew. Sam was exempt from the brunt of her father’s.. harshness due to much of her time spent studying and practicing away from the family home.
She keeps a large white dog, trained largely to her own will. He seems to have few issues keeping himself fed, probably by travelling to town and back when it suits his fancy. Otherwise he subsists off of the dried or cooked meats Sam brings home from her weekly outings.
Her chosen god is that of the Sun, Summers, Prophecy, Medicine, Plagues, and Order, Aeliro, as she was born beneath their star in their own season. Some had labelled her blessed, but she chose to make her own path on her own merit. She is known to worship the energies of the world more than this god, and they do not seem offended by this.
The Thirteen Gods of her part of the realm are as follows:
Aeliro, described above.
Monare, god of the Moon, the Tides, Navigation, and Storms
Kaelisto, god of Chaos, Wonder, the Physical Arts, and Wind
Hephanel, god of Music, Art, Spring, the Wood and Forest Life, and Kind Justice
Calophorhae, god of Cleansing, Destruction, Courage, Fear, and Fire
Gahareth, god of Food, Good Tidings, the Harvest, and Autumn
Saelsir, god of Life, Dawn, and White Magic
Torphir, god of the Afterlife, Dusk, Black Magic, and Cursed Souls
Malafaed, god of War, Victory, Suffering, and is generally assumed to be responsible for Curses
Vifolnaer, god of Winter, Curses, Watcher of the Godless Heathens, and Revenge
Daemal, one of two Twin Gods, god of Adventure, Mountains, and Earth
Daevale, one of two Twin Gods, god of the Travelling, Weary, and Mystery
Janiro, god of Tricks, Schemes, and Prosperity
Obviously, these gods need not apply to anyone joining Sam in this verse, but if it suits you and the character, please feel free to use them. These are largely for the locals in the area in which she lives. Worshippers of other deities may be remarked upon lightly, but only the crotchety, old “Traditionalists” who forget the world is bigger than they are have anything to complain about on it.
