He's so busy mocking Lando’s pickier eating habits to his chat, chuckling at some of the comments, that he almost misses Lando speaking.

“Me and Camila went last week, it's good.”

Camila?

He feels his smile start to drop and does his best to plaster it back onto his face. He can't risk giving anything away, and he's glad both his and Lando’s chats are nosy enough to ask all the questions he can't. The questions he actually doesn't want to know the answers to, because he should already know them.

Lando should have told him already, that there's someone new in his life who has apparently stolen his best friend’s heart. Max knows he would have told Lando if the roles were reversed, though he supposes they wouldn't be, because he's too busy being stupidly in love with his best friend.

And he is, he can admit that now. He's not sure when his truth changed to accommodate falling in love, but it did and now Max is even more irrevocably fucked because Lando sounds happy. He's almost gushing to his chat about his girlfriend, how he's excited to see her again at the next race since their schedules hadn't lined up since their dinner the other night.

Max feels nausea roll over in his stomach, stirring up ugly feelings he can't deal with on camera.

He's not sure how he gets through the rest of his stream, but apparently he manages to without raising suspicion. He signs off first, says goodnight to Lando and Bankai who are planning on another handful of rounds. As soon as his stream is switched off, he even double and triple checks, he tosses his headset onto his desk, elbows slamming into his thighs as he cradles his head.

Hot, angry tears burn behind his eyelids, a feeling of betrayal pulling at him and he hates how bitter he feels. He should be pleased. His best friend has met someone, he's happy and in love, from what little filtered in past the ringing in his ears she even sounds perfect for him. Instead, he feels the hollowed out cavity of rejection and the shame of it bites at his insides.

Many morning papers, including Kuopio's Savon Sanomat, carry a review of a new survey by the Finnish Business and Policy Forum (EVA) showing that a growing number of Finns want to see more focus on cooperation in international affairs with other Nordic and Baltic countries.

Sixty-four percent of those surveyed said they think that cooperation with the Nordic countries should have more emphasis in Finland's foreign policy.

According to EVA's head of research Ilkka Haavisto, it seems that the Finns would like the Nordic countries to act as a more united front in foreign policy than at present.

"Traditionally, the Nordic countries have cooperated on many issues, but have rarely appeared as a unified block, because the countries' foreign and security policy solutions have not been aligned," Haavisto points out.

Slightly more than half of respondents were of the opinion that cooperation with the Baltic countries should be given more weight more in Finland's foreign policy, as well.

Greater willingness to cooperate with the Baltic countries is related to the Nato alliance and the fact that the foreign policy of the Baltic countries is increasingly valued in Finland, according to an EVA's press release quoted in the article.

"Russia's attack on Ukraine showed that the Baltic countries assessed Russia correctly," Haavisto says.

A similar annual values and attitudes survey has been carried out by EVA since 1984. This poll includes responses from more than 2,000 people who took part in a Taloustutkimus internet panel at the beginning of this year.

Danger below the Baltic waves

It is estimated that around 50,000 tons of chemical weapons and at least 200,000 tons of conventional munitions lie on the bottom of the Baltic Sea, the agricultural sector paper Maaseudun Tulevaisuus reports.

The weapons include bombs, artillery shells, mines, grenades and other munitions dumped by the Allies at the end of the Second World War. They are known to contain mustard gas, adamsite and an arsenic compound called clark1, among other deadly chemicals.

The paper says that studies have shown that toxins leaking from corroding ammunition casings end up in sediments and aquatic organisms. Hanna Niemikoski, a chemist at the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) says that small concentrations have been found in, for example, cod, flounder, lobsters and shrimp.

More research is needed on whether the small concentrations of toxins found in seafood affect the people who eat them.

However, Professor Paula Vanninen, who heads Finnish Institute for Verification of the Chemical Weapons Convention, told the STT news agency that the threat to the marine environment and consumers is real.

One reason that the the issue of dealing with World War II-era chemical weapons dumped in the Baltic is topical is the fast pace at which offshore wind farms are being built in the region.

Reining in onboard parties

Helsingin Sanomat tells readers that shipping lines operating ferries between Finnish and Swedish ports have taken steps to curb partying by passengers in cabins and corridors.

It notes that, for example, some of the ships have no plugs in the sinks in cabins. This is to prevent passengers from filling the sinks with cold water to cool drinks.

Cruise passengers are prohibited from bringing their own alcoholic beverages onto Tallink Silja and Viking Line ships. It is also forbidden to consume alcoholic beverages bought from the ships' stores on board. The consumption of alcohol is limited to bars and restaurants.

Viking Line rules says that any passenger who causes a disturbance in cabin areas can be ejected from the cabin and fined 120 euros.

Both shipping companies have limited alcohol purchases from tax-free shops on certain departures and the contents of some passengers' bags are checked before boarding. Among the items confiscated are not only alcohol, but also sound-system speakers and power tools.

Hazardous gusts

Iltalehti warns of increasingly difficult driving conditions in many parts of the country on Wednesday because of heavy rains and high winds.

It points to an advisory from Fintraffic's road traffic centre saying that hazardously high gusts of wind, up to 20 metres per second, are expected in Kymenlaakso, South Karelia and South Savo.

Heavy rains will also affect driving conditions in Uusimaa, Häme and North Karelia.

The Fintraffic advisory reminds drivers to maintain safety distances of the season, and to be especially careful when it is dark.

I’m looking at the kindle e-book sale listings, and nearly every entry, the first letters of the author’s names are switched.

Lawrence Sanders is listed as Sawrence Landers, Ellery Queen is now Qllery Eueen, and on and on.  Authors who just have initials and last names have lost the initials. C.J. Box is now just “Box,” J.D Barker is now “Barker.”  Three name authors have it even weirder.  Eric Van Lustbader is now the author Lan Eric.  Authors whose first and last names have the same first letter have largely been spared.  A couple just had their first and last names fully transposed.  (Sharon Moreland became Moreland Sharon, for example.)  And I counted four entries, all on the same line, that were written correctly. 

I’m guessing this is some auto programming glitch, as opposed to human fuckery, because I suspect a human prank would be a bit more creative.

okay so i have very many thoughts about the tie video.

just imagine! imagine gino in front of his mirror like… nope. this is too difficult. this requires tEaM. OR oooor, alternatively, „if i ask odi to tie this for me he‘ll have to come really close and touch me very gently“ but either a) everyone interrupted or b) gino did not factor in odi‘s absolute hopelessness in the field of actual adulting.

also the fact that mauro, instead of being a helpful older brother and tying it for gino, chose to film him struggling instead.

Silja, the way your brain works...💕. I also can't get that video out of my head, and your points are all so valid, though I think Mauro did the right thing as an older brother. That video will only get better with age, and will lighten up many boring Christmas get-togethers. I'm tending towards 2b with a hefty dose of 2a, personally, and managed the first 1'000 words in one evening before I ran out of steam (story of my life).

After more than thirty years on this earth, Mauro knew his brother quite well, which was why he arrived ten minutes earlier than he said in his text. To his surprise, Gino was not in his bathroom in nothing but his underwear and socks surrounded by a cloud of various sprays and in a state of frenzy, but waiting outside. Not to his surprise, he was still not ready.

“You forgot your tie,” Mauro said while the window of his car still moved downwards. “Either you get one, or you have to change the jacket. You can’t wear a double-breasted suit like that.”

With a smug grin, Gino pulled said tie out of the pocket of his trousers, not unlike a clown conjuring a string of tissues. He dangled it in front of Mauro as he plopped down in the passenger seat.

“I didn’t forget anything,” he said.

Mauro could feel his brows fold themselves into the usual frown whenever his little brother was up to something. “Don’t you…want to put it on?”

Gino’s grin did not waver one bit. “Nope. Don’t you want to drive?”

Mauro huffed, and turned back onto the road. The congestions of rush hour were slowly dying down, and quickly they reached the motorway. The sun shone directly into their eyes as they sped towards Zurich, which did nothing to alleviate the growing headache behind Mauro’s forehead.

“And when are you going to put your tie on?” he asked after a while.

“I’ve been thinking,” Gino said in response, as if it was an acceptable answer.

“Oh god, I hope you didn’t break something.”

“Ha ha,” Gino deadpanned. “I’m serious. I’ve…had some introspection. After your retirement.”

Mauro waited for him to continue, his lips pressed to a thin line.

“Things changed after you left,” Gino explained. “Not like…outwardly, I mean. You’ve been gone for quite some time after all…”

“M-hm…” Mauro said.

“But on the inside,” Gino continued, and wistfully stared out of the window and at the grey noise protection walls fencing the motorway. “I realised I had to change. Because the truth is I’m stuck, and if I don’t start to act right now, I might forever regret it. I might…I might forever stay where I am now, and…and I realised I can’t. If I ever want to get results, I have to do something.”

Mauro threw a quick glance at his younger brother, and choked down the guilty conscience rising within. “Okay, first of all, I didn’t die, I just switched jobs…so to speak. And second of all you shouldn’t be so harsh with yourself. You raced onto the podium in arguably one of the most difficult giant slaloms last year, and you made great progress in your new discipline. You have to believe in yourself. Because I do.” He turned his head again but his brotherly smile was met with a dumbfounded frown.

“What?” Gino asked.

“What?” Mauro asked right back.

“I wasn’t talking about skiing!” Gino exclaimed. “It’s about Marco!”

Mauro blinked. “What?!” he asked again though this time a bit louder.

“Yeah, I realised I have to stop pining, and finally make a move!” Gino explained. “Because life is too short, and one day this will all be over.”

“Again, I didn’t die…”

“For years I’ve been too afraid, and when I left Andorra I hated myself for what I had become. But now everything’s going to change because I have a plan.” With a bright smile, Gino turned his head, though it died when he saw Mauro’s incredulous look.

“And what is that plan, if I may ask?”

Gino rolled his eyes, and raised his hand from his lap, once again dangling his tie across the centre console. “I’m going to pretend that I don’t know how to knot this, and he’s going to help me.”

Mauro paused. “Knot…this? Your tie?”

Gino nodded. “Yes.”

“After crying about him for years you’re… going to ask Marco to help you with your tie…to get together with him?” Mauro repeated.

Gino frowned. “What’s not to understand?”

A first sign announced their exit, and Mauro set the blinker. “Nothing,” he answered with a big smile. “That sounds like a great plan!”

“I don’t get it,” Alex said between two sips of beer. “Gino wants Odi to help him with his tie? Even though he knows how to put it on?”

“He’s an even bigger moron than I thought,” Justin said.

“Hey,” Mauro threw in softly as he tried to hide his grin, not because Justin was wrong but because it was his brotherly duty.

“How many years have we been working together now?” Justin asked. “And he thinks Odi can do this?”

“Should we help them?” Romain piped up.

“Maybe later,” Mauro answered.

“At first I didn’t really want to come because I thought it’ll be terribly boring,” Alex grinned, “but now I think it might turn out to be quite entertaining after all.”

The Swiss Ski federation knew their athletes and coaches well, and to placate them for the coming, tedious hours they had put up a long bar right in the middle of the foyer. The small group around their table however had no eyes for the crowd in the big atrium because they were all too busy staring at the scene unfolding in a quiet corner. Marco stood with his back to them but from the way he was cocking his head like a confused dog Mauro knew exactly the kind of puzzled look he must be showing at the moment. He listened intently to Gino, and they spoke together in hushed tones, until eventually he turned around, and scanned the foyer. His face lit up when he recognised the group around the small table, and before Gino could protest, he grabbed his hand, and dragged him across the room.

“Hey, does anyone of you know how to tie a tie?” he asked. He had opted for a tuxedo with a bow tie like Justin, and even as Gino tried to throw them a warning look the hearts in his eyes were unmistakable.

“Didn’t you learn this in the army?” Alex asked with raised eyebrows, and Mauro had to bite down on his cheek to keep from laughing as a faint blush crept over Marco’s cheeks.

“I didn’t really get it when they demonstrated it,” he confessed, “so Fabian did it for me and since then I’ve never untied it again.”

Alex tutted, and shook his head. “Disappointing.”

“As if you still know how to do it,” Gino snapped.

“Which is why I left my double-breaster at home,” Alex smiled, and pointed at his shirt and jacket.

Marco chewed on his lower lip for a few moments with a pensive look until Mauro took pity.

“I’m sure there’s a video somewhere on the internet.”

Marco’s face lit up, and he beamed at Gino. “You’re right!” He pulled his phone out of his jacket, and tapped furiously on the screen. When he placed it on the table, Mauro casually lifted his own, and pressed play on the video-button. Gino shot him a murderous glare but got distracted immediately.

"Quick, it's running!" Marco said, and waved his hand at the tie hanging from Gino's shoulders.

To Mauro’s left, Justin could not stop wincing as Gino tried to follow the instructions and Marco threw in unhelpful tips.

“You have to pull it through…”

Romain broke first, and grabbed one end of the tie. “Here!” he said. Gino almost swatted his hand but caught himself in time.

“Marco, you have to show him!” Alex grinned but he very obviously could not follow the video, and looked like an overwhelmed puppy again.

“Here, like this!” Alex said, and held out his hand.

Finally, Gino snapped. "I can do it!" he hissed, and with a few quick moves had the tie snug around his neck.

“Congratulations” Mauro said, and received another glare from his brother. “That was wonderful teamwork.”

Construction of the Great Belt Bridge in Denmark (completed 1997) and the Øresund Bridge-Tunnel (completed 1999), linking Denmark with Sweden, provided a highway and railroad connection between Sweden and the Danish mainland (the Jutland Peninsula, precisely the Zealand). The undersea tunnel of the Øresund Bridge-Tunnel provides for navigation of large ships into and out of the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea is the main trade route for the export of Russian petroleum. Many of the countries neighboring the Baltic Sea have been concerned about this since a major oil leak in a seagoing tanker would be disastrous for the Baltic—given the slow exchange of water. The tourism industry surrounding the Baltic Sea is naturally concerned about oil pollution.

Much shipbuilding is carried out in the shipyards around the Baltic Sea. The largest shipyards are at Gdańsk, Gdynia, and Szczecin, Poland; Kiel, Germany; Karlskrona and Malmö, Sweden; Rauma, Turku, and Helsinki, Finland; Riga, Ventspils, and Liepāja, Latvia; Klaipėda, Lithuania; and Saint Petersburg, Russia.

There are several cargo and passenger ferries that operate on the Baltic Sea, such as Scandlines, Silja Line, Polferries, the Viking Line, Tallink, and Superfast Ferries.

Construction of the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link between Denmark and Germany is due to finish in 2029. It will be a three-bore tunnel carrying four motorway lanes and two rail tracks.

Tour of Scandinavia, Day 8: Overnight Ferry to Helsinki

As our Tour of Scandinavia began winding to a close, we took an overnight ferry across the Baltic Sea from Stockholm, Sweden, to Helsinki, Finland. We explored the mini cruise ship as we made our way through the Swedish Archipelago, which encompasses 30,000 islands, at sunset. We arrived in Helsinki on an overcast Friday morning. Icelandic version of the Cyrano De Bergerac novel, based off of the version with Stefán Karl

Nothing that touches you leaves my memory: I also remember after your haircut on the twelfth of May, I remember it again when you first came, I got such a glow in my eyes same as the one who stares into the sunlight for long and sees that the glow lasts as long as the halo is left in the eyes as a dull yellow color!

Once upon a time, all plays were in limited language, as we know from the Greek tragedies and Shakespeare's plays, and in reality nothing is more self-evident. It is true that people don't usually speak in formal language, but the playwrights were not trying to imitate everyday human speech either. Both of them were writing fiction, and it is obviously much easier for an actor to learn a text that is bound together by rhythm, alliteration and/or rhyme - as can be clearly seen in the very short example above from the love confession of Cyrano de Bergerac, translated by Kristján Árnason.

Long relationship

The National Theater's Christmas play this winter was Cyrano de Bergerac, a humorous hero play by the Frenchman Edmond Rostand, composed at the end of the 19th century about Cyrano, the big-nosed hero who lived in the 17th century, and who, together with the playboy Christian, sought the love of the graceful Roxane.

Kristján Árnason, a poet and translator, translated the play, which is all in English, for the National Theatre. Now it has also been published as a book by Mál og Menning so that the braggart can be better enjoyed, and those who want to learn about Cyrano are referred to Kristján's entertaining introduction to the publication. Kristján knew little about the work before he agreed to translate it for Gísli Alfreðsson, the then director of the National Theatre. But he really had the opportunity to get to know it closely, because when it finally came on stage, it was 17 years since he started the translation work, which he did in stages.

The play takes about five hours to perform in its entirety, and Kristján knew that if it were performed in this country, it would be shortened. "I originally thought of shortening it myself," he says, "but then it turned out that I translated it all as it was, and that's why it would be worth it to get the text published in a book." in the show it was shortened by a third and still some people thought it was too long!"

Tried my patience

Kristján has previously tackled men such as Goethe, Rimbaud, Rilke, Thomas Mann, Süskind and Aristophanes himself with splendid results - how did you solve this task?

"Well, I secretly enjoyed it," says Kristján, "especially when I started to see the end of it!" It's a lot of work and it tried my patience. I don't shake things up like that. The play is under the French Alexandrine-

Didn't you run the risk of getting stuck in the braggart - thinking in its rhythm and rhyme? "Of course, there was no way around it," Kristján laughs. "But you also got a certain outlet for the need for bravado with this work. I've always enjoyed plays in a limited language, ever since I came across Matthías Jochumsson's translations of Manfred by Byron and Brandi Ibsen at a young age. I started writing plays in limited language by myself when I was a teenager and never thought of writing a play in any other way! But it is of course anachronistic - and many people think Cyrano is anachronistic. But he was also like that when the work was written, a work that was completely at odds with the realist plays that were gaining ground at the time. And it was supposed to be anachronistic, the author wanted to revive the classic era of the Sun King in France, and Cyrano is a good representative of him and the virtues that were held in high esteem at that time - bravery, eloquence, loyalty, love and honor, independence and determination. That's exactly why he has a mission for the modern world, at least I think there's a good reason to keep these virtues alive, even if they seem demeaning in our day."

The art of words is more important than the psychology

How do you like the play after all this work? Did it grow or shrink in your mind? "It's been up and down. The play has an external elegance that is fascinating," says Kristján. "The vocabulary is more significant than the psychology, which is perhaps a bit simple. But she still goes all the way up, I think. This is a play about a man who is skilled both as a swordsman and a poet, and there is great wordplay in the text, which is also musical, you can play with phrases like music, throw them between each other. The bound form also makes them sharper, and if you have the power to do so, they penetrate the audience's ears better than unbound speech."

Do you think that the psychology is very simplistic? I found Christian, the foolish lover, such an exciting character when I read the play. Cyrano's duel with words during their first meeting, when Christian mentions Cyrano's nose in every sentence and drives him crazy with anger, suggests that Christian is a very clever fellow and I wonder if he's just dyslexic and that is why he has such a hard time writing a letter to Roxane?

They are perhaps both more verbose than they are at first glance, comrades," says Kristján, "and precisely these puns are the play's advantage and the translator's entertainment, even though they are also difficult. You never translate jokes of this kind directly, but you have to create new puns instead and word games. Then you will be filled with creative joy. Then there are magnificent monologues in between, like when Cyrano rejects becoming a court poet with a long speech in which he proclaims the independence and freedom of the artist. He struggles to speak. And although this seems anachronistic compared to when the historical Cyrano lived, it is worth remembering that he did not follow the beaten path. He was a rebel, a free thinker, and finally the originator of science fiction - all in writing about trips to the moon, as actually appears in the play when he delays the hopeful De Guiche while Roxane and Christian are being married. Cyrano was very interested in science and put forward theories about how to get to the moon, he thought that it would be possible to be pulled there by magnetic force."

The nose is historical

-Isn't it bitter that such a genius is mostly famous for his big nose and failed love?

"It's certainly the grayness of fate, but it gives the character a certain depth," says Kristján. "The strength is mainly on the surface because it carries this pain underneath. The love story, however, comes from Rostand himself. The historical Cyrano did have a cousin, but no relationship of this kind is known between them. But he had a nose, abnormally large, and it is said that he fought more than one duel to defend his complex! From the life of this historical person, Rostand creates a classic comedy in which Cyrano gets the role of the sly slave, the middleman who brings the lovers together. The work also becomes tragic because the lovers are unable to enjoy themselves even though they are to marry, but in a way you can say that Cyrano and Roxane get a moment together at the end, so Rostand still breaks them out of the formula."

-Do you think Cyrano is following you?

"Yes, don't you think so?" says Kristján in a half spumar tone. "I'm glad to have had a chance to fight with him. Because, of course, it was a fight - which ended, however, in such a way that neither was badly hurt.
