Wait y'all ok, I just noticed something really interesting.

When Naenia first solidifies into Faustina in Gévaudan, we get a page of all the vampire characters reacting to feeling her presence. Everyone on that page is characters we know and expect, except for one. There's this funky silhouette of someone surrounded by (or turning into?) bats, and their silhouette doesn't quite match up with any other established character that I can think of.

I suppose if you squint they're slightly similar to teacher, but it's not quite his same shape, and I don't think we've ever seen teacher with bat imagery, so that would be pretty out of left field.

But! there is one other panel in the manga with a similar silhouette! Right before the page of reacting vampires, we get a glimpse of one of Naenia's memories, and someone very familiar is there.

The figure in the middle is obviously Ruthven, and the one on the left might be Veronica? (The silhouette matches her hair, but it's too hazy for me to say for certain). But then on the right, look who it is! Once again, it's a vague silhouette of that figure with the short hair and the drooping but angular shoulders. And they're surrounded by bats/have something weird with their right shoulder just like the previous image.

Whoever that person is, they played a noteworthy part in what Lord Ruthven did to Faustina/Naenia. That means there's at least one big player in Ruthven's plot that we haven't met yet.

#there's absolutely no evidence for this. but my theory is that the mystery bat dude is gonna be dracula #or at least their name will somehow be a dracula reference #bc it is wild that we have a reference-filled vampire series without a single dracula pull #and the whole 'spooky dark silhouette surrounded by bats' look just SCREAMS classic cliche vampire #so I think that's where the dracula ref should go #anyway if anyone spots any other glimpses of this guy let me know #I *think* these are the only references to/images of this figure. but I 100% could be wrong #theory #vnc #vanitas no carte #the case study of vanitas #ID in alt text

BTW I genuinely love that night in the woods does not, in the end, tell you if it was all real or not. It does not even explain whether the goat was real. It gives you mundane explanations - mae's mental health history, gas leaks, the strikes and structural instability in the mines - but also it's juuust legitimately supernatural enough that you end the game going... well. was that all imagined? how much of that was legitimate? the cultists all talk about getting abilities from the pit, and mae's friends are there and are confirming this is actually happening, and I think that was the first time in the game I actually approached the idea that there really was something else going on and it wasn't all just things we the player are experiencing because we're getting it from mae's perspective and mae is a truly intense unreliable narrator.

But: how much does it matter if there's actually an eldritch goat god underneath possum springs, or if it was all just a delusion on mae's behalf, or if it's a gas leak? that isn't the point. that was never the point.

I was designing my own clothing and I was like "woah, weird, this kinda whips" (like a guy who made something for an audience of one).
