Unit 7: Nature Interpretation through Music
Throughout unit 7 of the course, there were several examples provided of music in nature and nature in music. For example, in the article written by Gray et al. (2001) entitled, "The Music of Nature and the Nature of Music", the sounds and songs of Whales, Birds, and Humans were explained in detail. Not only was it made clear from the article that these species produce music in their natural environments, but Gray et al. (2001) also highlighted the musical commonalities between each of these species. For instance, near the beginning of the article it states, "They use phrases of a similar length to ours -- a few seconds -- and create themes out of several phrases before singing the next theme. Their songs could easily "grow" organically without the need for repetition but, like human composers, these marine mammals prefer to reiterate their material (Gray et al., 2001)." This statement is one of many examples providing evidence of where music is in nature, in this case, in the Oceans! I found it quite interesting how the songs and sounds used by humpback whales in different Oceans are far different from one another and reflect the breeding area to which they belong. What I found even more fascinating, is that by listening and comparing whale songs within a collection of tapes, researchers can actually identify both the year and Ocean from which a song was sung. This is truly incredible and an amazing example of music in nature!
In addition to music in nature, there were also many examples of nature in music presented throughout the readings for this unit. For example, in this week's course link content under the subtitle, "Music as a Gateway to Nature?", Musician Ben Mirin was mentioned as recapturing his relationship with birds, through the use of bird song recordings in his beatboxing performances. After watching the video, it was cool how he made a remix of some of his favourite bird songs, while simultaneously beatboxing over the tune!

Not only is Musician Ben Mirin, a great example of incorporating nature into music, but Sahi (2011) also highlights a unique way of merging these two factors through a live performance. In her article, "Spiritual Values of Protected Areas of Europe", she explains how on the opening day of Sipoonkorpi National Park, a folk music performance was conducted within the forest of the newly protected area, to help visitors interpret Swedish cultural aspects and the significance of traditional agriculture. I always find concerts that are outdoors and in nature to be far more appealing, as they add the natural element that helps bring a live performance together.
A song that immediately takes me back to a natural landscape and incorporates the sounds of wildlife is Wheat Kings by Tragically Hip. The past two summers, I went up to my friends cottage on Elephant Lake near Bancroft, Ontario. During the roadtrip up to their cottage and around the campfire at night, we listened to this song. What I found really cool is that Tragically Hip is a Canadian group that makes a number of references to Northern, Ontario throughout it's songs. In Wheat Kings specifically, the song begins with the sounds of Loons and other wildlife in Northern, Ontario. The coolest part about it all, is that while we were listening to the Loons in the song around the campfire, we could actually hear Loons in real life on the lake directly beside us! It was such a cool moment!

Whenever I hear this song, I think about the memories that were made at my friends cottage and the adventures that we went on, whether it be hiking through the woods, cliff jumping, ATVing, or having to tow one of the seadoos back a few miles because we thought it flooded. The isolation, starry nights, and pristine landscape of their cottage in the Algonquin area are a few of the many other things I think about when listening to this song. Give it a listen, and let me know what you think! If you like this song, I also suggest listening to "Bobcaygeon" by the same group. I hope you enjoy these songs!

Polut ovat erittäin märkiä. Vettä ja liejua on joka puolella. Osa poluista on vielä jään peitossa. Puroissa riittää vettä ja ajoittain vesi on noussut pitkälle metsään.
