📝 return
Jared Kleinman, 26, and Evan Hansen, 26, were the American favorites at the 2014 Winter Olympics — in men’s singles figure skating. But after one altercation on the podium, two years’ suspension, and three seasons of skating without America’s most popular rivals, they’ve returned to the ice for the 2017-2018 season as the first same-sex pairs team sanctioned by the International Skating Union.
(send me a 📝 + a word, and i’ll post an excerpt from a fic i’m currently writing that contains that word.)

— HISTORY
2001 - 2008 Siyeon was born in Los Angeles, California. Her parents, a Nigerian woman, and a Korean man, were high school sweethearts who would love each other to the very end. Unfortunately, when Siyeon was 7 years old, her parents fell victim to a car accident involving a drunk driver. So, at age 7, she was moved to live with her maternal grandmother, who lived in San Jose, California.
2008 - 2015 While living with her grandmother, Siyeon continued her figure skating training and picked up taekwondo as well. Also, at this time, she met Yeonjun, as they happened to live in the same neighborhood, and Siyeon’s grandmother wanted her to stay connected to her Korean roots. They remained close friends for the two years he lived in San Jose.
Later, in 2013, Siyeon suffered an ACL injury while practicing her figure skating. Thankfully, it was not too severe, but it stopped her from pursuing a professional figure skating career. After she fully healed a year later, she began to focus more on dance.
In late 2014, she saw that auditions for BigHit online and decided to audition. She was accepted and began her training in 2015.
2015 - 2019 Siyeon moves to Korea and is reunited with her paternal grandparents, who become her biggest supporters alongside her maternal grandmother. She also meets Yeonjun again, and they quickly become close again. They also met the rest of the TXT members when they all joined in 2016 and were confirmed to be in the debut lineup for TXT.
However, in 2017, Siyeon’s maternal grandmother had a health scare and ended up in the hospital for some time. Siyeon almost gave up her debut spot in order to go back to America to be with her grandmother, but her grandmother insisted that she would be fine and continue following her dream. During this time, the other members supported her and helped her whenever she had a rough time, even when she refused to open up about how she was truly feeling. Her grandmother made a full recovery.
When her introduction video was released in 2019, there were many mixed emotions about her being in the group as the only girl, along with racist remarks from netizens all over. However, she still received a lot of love and support from international fans, and like Yeonjun, her introduction video gained 1 million views in 24 hours.
2019 - Present Siyeon officially debuts along with Yeonjun, Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Hueningkai on March 4th, 2019. During this time, she, along with her fellow groupmates, face many struggles during their debut year and going into 2020 following the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown.
In 2020, between The Dream Chapter: Eternity and Minisode 1: Blue Hour, Siyeon realized her feelings for her group members, which made her unintentionally avoid them outside of schedules. She does eventually express her feelings to them, and they slowly begin a poly relationship.
Despite the internal struggles they each face when entering a relationship, TXT grows closer than ever and remains in a happy relationship.
Siyeon also grows as a person and artist, becoming a role model for younger groups and the newer generation.

What do you make of where Soucisse/Firus are with their skating? On the one hand, I felt for them as they got overshadowed in Canadian skating and at IAM by some teams switching to Canada and others moving into seniors. On the other hand, I can’t say I’ve noticed much improvement or progress from S/F either. Will they qualify for Worlds this year?
they have their minimums for Worlds, so i think they're going
i had to refresh my memory, and 👀 they had good programs from Gadbois in 2017-18. that was their 2nd season together, and they won silver at 4CC (in an Olympic year, but still) and were on the Worlds team and were 14th. they had a different energy about them back then - they had a sense of hope and potential
idk why the wheels came off so soon after that - they stayed at IAM 2 more seasons til April 2020, but 2018-19 they had a misfire of an FD - does a good program with music by The Weeknd exist? it was a stretch, and maybe an attempt to be more contemporary and edgy, but it didn't play with the judges, and they look a little labored. then 2019-20 was when they had a lot of big mistakes. maybe their confidence was shaken for the reasons you said, maybe they were injured along the way? because they were recycling lifts and not getting better
when you see teams like LaLa and CPom really improving, they deserve so much credit- to increase in speed, power, skating skill, artistry, mental toughness under pressure - the closer you get to the most elite level, each step takes exponentially more understanding and growth to integrate. and it's harder to correct weaknesses after they're habitual
S/F stabilized and looked happier after they moved to Carol Lane in 2020, but i don't know that they've really changed much about their basics. and i don't think you can rise without that. their recent material hasn't been particularly memorable - the Charles Aznavour FD they're doing now is a revised version of the one they did for 2021-22. i get that Worlds is in Montreal, and Aznavour is a good fit for that, but they weren’t competing for an entire year - why aren't they skating something new?
2022 Skate America in Norwood had a really knowledgeable and supportive crowd that was warm and appreciative of the skaters, lots of love all around. so it was strange that the one team the crowd went lukewarm for was S/F. the energy left the building for them. for me, it’s hard to get a sense of who they are, and too often it looks like they're skating while music plays - sometimes it looks like the audio on their programs is off because they're so disconnected from the music. i'm glad they have new opportunities, glad when they look a little sharper in their RD, but ultimately, i find them kind of frustrating

Welcome back from Skate Canada! What a great comp to get to watch live! Would you mind sharing your personal highlights?
not at all! i was thinking of making a thread on twitter but actually it's better to just put all my thoughts in one post here haha. i'll do my best to record some thoughts before i forget.
women:
it was wonderful to see rika, i really hope her injury is getting better and she takes it easy until nationals. her skating is very lovely and polished. i was feeling kind of stressed about her jumps before the competition but she was great in the free! the titanic program is good for her. i'm happy she got the highest PCS of the free skate.
rinka was really solid in general, i'm thrilled for her amazing gp debut. to think she started out with no gp assignments at all! her spins could use some work and i would have liked to see more speed in her step sequences but i think she'll get there. i love her tight air position on the 3A.
really happy for starr, i haven't seen her skate that well in a long time and i'm happy she medaled. would also like to see more speed and ice coverage from her.
young kind of got hosed by the judges, personally i would have given her silver here. i love her short program, the detail in her step sequence is fantastic. i don't like her fs as much, it doesn't stand out to me but maybe it will grow on me.
(horrifically embarrassing moment when the announcer announced young as "from japan" in the medal ceremony. the gasps of "NO" from the audience... yikes! anyway the girls were all really popular and went around after the medal ceremony signing autographs and taking photos with fans, eventually the announcer had to ask them to leave the ice so the zamboni could come out lol.)
i felt really bad for maddie schizas and the flower holder situation. that was stressful. i saw some flowers falling apart once they hit the ice as well. brings me back to 2017 skate america and the dead flies on the ice, but at least those weren’t going to trip anybody.
in general, the women's event was very "what just happened here" - we don't usually see this much movement in standings between the sp and fs in this discipline! otoh it's kind of cool to not be able to predict the results. few other performances i enjoyed include: ava ziegler (she's quite expressive), niina petrokina (interesting programs), yuhana yokoi's fs (her 2As are super airy...but oh, why must she always bomb the sp), lindsay thorngren's spins.
ice dance:
i like ice dance but am useless at figuring out scoring, so basically just going by vibes here.
lajoie/lagha were the revelation of the competition for me, i became a fan after watching them live. i was zoning out a bit during the rhythm dance (most of the RDs this season are just...not very interesting to me) until lala - they have amazing energy and a really fun program! they skate big and fast and just fill up the rink.
green/parsons are great skaters (especially michael) but i am not feeling their programs this season at all, which is a bit of a shame because i loved them last season. but since they just changed coaches, i’m sure it will take a while to adjust to the new training environment; hoping for the best for them. they had a hilarious exhibition, do check it out if you haven’t.
fear/gibson - lewis always looks like he’s having a great time out there and i enjoy that.
gilles/poirier - i think i like their free dance? although it does have a lot of music cuts. paul’s skating skills are A+.
pairs:
i love miura/kihara SO MUCH. they skate with so much passion and joy and just look like they’re having the time of their lives out there. the quality of their skating compared to the rest of the field was really, really obvious. they were by far the fastest team with the best skating skills and most stable pairs elements. big throws, fast and effortless lifts that covered a lot of ice. i’m still astounded that they’ve improved this much in only a few years. i’m really happy they won here, especially considering riku’s injury and the fact that they’ve only been doing runthroughs of their free for a few weeks (!!!) manifesting a world title for them this season, please gods give me this.
also enjoyed: chan/howe, sitting in the twist corner so we could see all the twists up close
men:
the men’s sp aged me about 50 years. so...many...pops...and falls...six skaters scored below 70. i think we were all a bit catatonic by the end of day 1. luckily the men (mostly) redeemed themselves in the free, and it was a good event to end on.
the energy in the arena exploded after keegan’s skate, and i can see why. he’s just fun to watch! he’s extremely fast, skates super close to the boards, and doesn’t do anything halfway. even his mistakes are dramatic - i thought he was going to go flying over the boards after saving a 3A - but for his last season, he had a great free skate to end his last skate canada.
i was worried about matteo, but he delivered one of the cleanest skates of the night! i can’t believe he landed the 4Lo, because he was popping all of them in practice. really happy for his medal. he’s so charming and i became a bigger fan after seeing him. the audience gave him lots of love after his free, which was good because it was very dead during the sp.
poor kao broke his lace during the free skate warmup, came back out with 20 seconds to go and landed a 4T right before the warmup ended. this kid. he was rock solid in all the practices and had the only clean skate in the sp, so honestly thanks for that. i love his speed and power, he goes into his jumps with no hesitation at all. just jaw-dropping quality jumps. he’s rough around the edges but has lots of potential. i’ll even forgive him for the beauty and the beast music because he’s only 17 and it’s cheesy in a good way. also proud of him for not getting level 2 spins this time.
also enjoyed: shoma’s free (shows his good qualities well), camden (he’s just nice to watch, jumps be damned), deniss’s exhibition (one of the few interesting exhibitions in the whole gala)
general thoughts:
audience tended to be pretty canadian-centric when it came to cheering, but shoma, miura/kihara, and rika got the loudest cheers after the canadian skaters.
the food is some of the worst i’ve had in an arena, and my standards are not high to begin with! all the water fountains were out of order as well. the only good thing was that security never checked anyone’s bags, so we ended up smuggling in food and ordering out.
not sure if this could be heard on the livestream but there was an extremely loud, squeaky noise whenever the rink’s A/C turned on. it was unbearably annoying but also unintentionally hilarious at times - like when a skater was doing a spin or step sequence and the A/C would make their skates sound like a speeding car skidding on a road.
overall it was a fun weekend! but also exhausting haha. i haven’t been to a skating competition in several years so it was great just to see live skating again. my favorite thing about live skating is the sense of speed and ice coverage that is completely different from watching on a screen - and of course, the audience reaction to a good performance. there’s really no replacing that feeling.

Blacks for Trump demonstration at the Miami Federal Courthouse yesterday
* * * *
LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
“DONALD TRUMP UNDER ARREST, IN FEDERAL CUSTODY.”
It was quite a chyron from CNN, marking the first time in the history of the United States that a former president has been charged with federal crimes. And in this case, what crimes they are: the willful retention, sharing, and hiding of classified documents that compromise our national security. Trump’s own national security advisor John Bolton said, “This is material that in the hands of America’s adversaries would do incalculable damage to the United States. This is a very serious case and it’s not financial fraud, it’s not hush money to porn stars, this is the national security of the United States at stake. I think we’ve got to take the politics out of this business when national security is at stake.”
Cameras were barred in the courtroom as Trump pleaded not guilty to the 37 charges in Miami today. Presiding magistrate judge Jonathan Goodman ordered Trump not to communicate with witnesses about the case, including co-defendant Waltine Nauta, then released him on his own recognizance, that is, without needing to post bail. Special prosecutor Jack Smith was in the courtroom; ABC’s senior congressional correspondent Rachel Scott reported that Trump did not look at Smith.
Then Trump went back to his residence in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he gave a speech that New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, who is close to the Trump camp, described as low energy, focusing on his insistence that he had a right to keep the classified documents (which experts agree is nonsense and amounts to a confession) and that the indictment was “the most evil and heinous abuse of power.” Right-wing Newsmax and the Fox News Channel (FNC) carried the speech; CNN and MSNBC did not.
FNC has been hemorrhaging viewers since it fired Tucker Carlson, a threat to its bottom line that might have been behind its chyron tonight attacking Biden by claiming “WANNABE DICTATOR SPEAKS AT THE WHITE HOUSE AFTER HAVING HIS POLITICAL RIVAL ARRESTED.”
In statements similar to the one from FNC, right-wing pundits spent the day flooding Twitter and other social media with furious insistence that Trump is being unfairly prosecuted, followed by attacks on former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, and with allegations that there are tapes of President Biden accepting bribes—allegations that Biden openly laughed at this evening.
But that performative outrage among leaders did not translate into support on the ground in Miami. Law enforcement had been prepared for as many as 50,000 protesters, but only a few hundred to a thousand turned out (one wearing a shirt made of an American flag and carrying the head of a pig on a pole).
The lack of supporters on the ground was significant. Since the August 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, much of Trump’s power has rested on his ability to call out his base to silence opponents by threatening violence. That power was in full force on January 6, 2021, when his loyalists set out to stop the counting of the electoral votes that would make Democrat Joe Biden president, believing they were operating under the orders of then-president Trump.
Since then, though, more than 1,000 people who participated in the events of January 6 have been charged with crimes, and many have been sentenced to prison, while Trump, who many defendants say called them to arms, has skated. That discrepancy is likely dampening the enthusiasm of Trump’s supporters for protest.
Today Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo pointed out that the audacity of Nevada’s militia-related Bundy family simply grew as family members launched successive stands against the federal government without significant legal repercussions. Republican politicians cheered on their attacks on federal officials for political gain, while Democratic politicians didn’t push to go after them out of concern that a show of federal power would alienate Nevada voters.
Trump’s threats and determination to stir up his base seem to reflect a similar consideration: if he can just rally enough support, he might imagine, the federal government will back off.
Federal officials permitting politics to trump the rule of law in our past have brought us to this moment.

past years: 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022
[click to enlarge if needed] it’s that time of year again! 2022 has been a slow but good year overall. slow... but also a year that went by so quickly. didn’t consume as much media as I would have wanted (lots of trash tv, not many movies, and the brain wasn’t able to focus on reading a book in the second half of the year;;) but I did explore some new music! changed my hair colour a ton, and saw lots of skating (short track and figure skating!) especially in the second half of the year! I even got my first professional gig(tm) as media at skate america and interviewed my fav boy jun (aka the most stressful moment of my life!) ;;
who knows if I’ll migrate back here with twitter slowly seeing its downfall thanks to incompetent rich people but!!! one thing that will always remain is the my year in a nutshell tradition <3
see you in 2023! the first three months are looking up to be a busy (and fun) for me which is great!

2022 Skate Canada International FS results, final results, and Stephen’s protocol.
What a comeback. Redemption is the word being used by commentators. Stephen skated as if he had nothing to lose and walks away with everyone’s respect and admiration, as well as a seventh place finish overall.
First let’s talk about those quads. He managed to do them all, though not perfect, but he did get them rotated. The 4S2T combo was a beauty. Hopefully the knowledge that he is able to execute these in competition helps him going forward. We have to talk about his spins. They look much improved from anything he’s been doing for quite some time. It’s amazing. Full credit to him. The Euler combination was fire as well. The choreo sequence got validated this time, but with negative GOE so perhaps he can refine it for NHK Trophy. Some more polishing with this program could get him up in the 160s hopefully. The PCS will come.
We have to acknowledge that Stephen managed to turn things around after that SP. Hopefully this will be a confidence booster for him for the rest of the season. And I hope he was also able to feel the love from the crowd. No matter how he skates at the end of the day we still love him and wish to support him. Though it is quite nice to see him do well.
This competition actually reminds me of 2017 Summer Skate. His SP, which he skated close to 11 PM at night (way too late for a 12 year old lbr) was not great, but he came back the next day and just crushed his FS. And now he is skating first in the exhibition gala, as he did at 2018 Junior Grand Prix Final. You can watch the gala here.
Up next for him will be NHK Trophy in Sapporo. The schedule was posted in September. Going to be some early mornings for those of us in North America. Best of luck to him there.
Thank you for your hard work Stephen and enjoy the gala.

STREETWEAR: Where did it come from?
As decades have passed, we see styles change quite frequently. Streetwear derived from the New York and LA fashion scene from the crowds of hip-hop and skateboard lovers. It was around the 1990's when streetwear fashion made a mark in the fashion industry.

Streetwear is essentially comfy yet fashionable clothing that contains baggier fits, graphic shirts, sweatshirts, and higher expense shoes to go along with the outfit. It was more seen worn by a younger youth culture, typically in urban neighborhoods. A great example that exemplifies young streetwear influencers that many people looked up to was the young hip-hop group, Kriss Kross. They were typically known to wear their clothing backwards. They wore baggier clothing always and followed the current trends, but changed it up in their own way by wearing their clothing backwards.

Since the hip-hop scene had such a big influence on the streetwear fashion era, let's talk about what the hip-hop scene essentially did to leave their mark on this pop-culture phenomena. Around the early 1990's major record labels such as: Def Jam Recordings, Tommy Boy Records, and Delicious Vinyl started their own fashionable statements. They began to produce and sell branded items that had embroidery on the clothing that displayed on items from Carhartt that were workwear jackets and other branded letterman jackets. These major record labels were all associated with popular hip-hop group or singers that had them wear the clothing they were producing and selling.

Now with the skateboard influence on streetwear fashion, we can see it also played a major role in the fashion industry. The rise of skater streetwear fashion derived from the East Coast of America. One of the major icons that was a big part of the streetwear skater movement was singer Pharrell Williams. His influence on the skate culture fashion didn't come around till late 90's- early 2000's era. Pharrell began skateboarding in his early teen years and created a skate team with his clothing brand, Ice Cream. He took it upon himself to not only display his love for skateboarding, but also the fashion that comes behind it. He was often seen wearing trucker hats, baggier pants, shearling jackets, and plenty of graphic tees. His sense of fashion and skateboarding is definitely returning in present day era as we see more of this style being worn by modern day skateboarders, as he recently relaunched his Ice Cream skateboard team and Billionaire Boy's Club Brand.

Now, streetwear is not going anywhere, anytime soon! Modern day fashion is all about streetwear. A top brand we see really putting their name and changing the streetwear game once again is, Supreme. Their goal is to continue to change the streetwear world and keep it going until the next generation. Even with top luxury brands, such as Louis Vuitton are joining the streetwear game. In 2017, Louis Vuitton created a collaboration with Supreme upon streetwear fashion. Many believe the collaboration itself was unmatched and really opened the eyes of other high end, fashion designers and brand to compete with.

Streetwear has made an outlasting impression in the fashion industry to say the least. The trends of fashion change for many people, but one trend that never seems to fade away is streetwear. Streetwear fashion clothing is seen sold in many top branded store's which catch the eyes of daily consumers passing. Streetwear will continue to thrive and attract in different crowds that will eventually develop into this fashion as well!
