#smc: infinity arc

Why'd Toei made such smooth animation when it comes to Precure transformation sequences, but they gave such stiff animation to the transformation sequences in SMC's Infinity arc, SM Eternal, and SM Cosmos? It's like Toei lost their love for Sailor Moon... 😕
If I had to narrow down one thing I can beef about with Toei, it's their lack of commitment to the Sailor Moon reboot's transformation sequences. I feel like them recreating the 90s transformations is just a lazy way to both pander to old fans and not have to think of new, creative, longer transformation sequences (as all non-Moon transformations are very short).
I love the 90s transformation sequences very much. But I was really looking forward to Sailor Moon getting the Precure treatment. I don't watch every new season of Precure, but I do always check out the new transformation sequences because they're usually the highlight. We really could have seen something spectacular for the Sailor Moon reboot but Toei has shown time and time again that they no longer want to give Sailor Moon the respect it deserves. And I'm saying this as someone who does still love the reboot despite its flaws.

I just wanna rant about how Sailor Saturn is like one of the coolest Sailor Moon characters to exist. One thing I don’t like about the 90s is how dirty they did Saturn. They really took away the whole thing on how the Outer Senshis literally feared her for her existance. Which is why I really really really like how they did it in Crystal. SMC Season 3 is like my favorite Season because it really gravitates towards the Outer Senshi in general and mainly Saturn/Hotaru. She is like literally the main characters the Infinity Academy Arc. Heck the fact that Sailor Uranus, Neptune and Pluto fear Saturn that much that they would even kill a modern incarnation of her despite the fact its a literal child really shows how Sailor Saturn is feared. Because in short she somewhat ended the Silver Millenium.

my biggest unpopular opinion has to be sailor moon crystal is better than sailor moon 90s anime.
like there's some things 90s added that were so much better for storytelling, like usagi begging to transform into super sailor moon to save hotaru, the redemption of the spectre sisters, some villains' personalities, but i watched the black moon arc yesterday and man. just to name a small, brief example. the development and care put into chibiusa's character, making her parallel sailor moon's biggest pain when mamoru got killed by the dark kingdom with the death of sailor pluto, her first and only friend and her awakening as a soldier and releasing out the silver crystal out of her tears just like her mom... man. it made black lady's "redemption" in the 90s look stupid and silly.
when chibiusa she says she met her mom in the past and she was surprised she was not the perfect queen but she was a crybaby, who got yelled out, just like her, and it inspired her into thinking she could, in the future become a queen too... the way it can also reflect the way many girls feel after watching sailor moon... many people hate chibiusa and i too found her annoying thanks to the mischaracterization the 90s did to her (and so many characters) and now she's become one of my favorite characters. WOW. love a lot how they follow the manga so much and seeing naoko's art being beautifully brought to life with music, animation and colors really put things in a better perspective to me.
i wish people saw beyond the "ugly art style" that isn't even ugly: like every animation ever it was some wonky/low quality moments. the art style isn't even my fav either (the best art style for SMC is the one from infinity arc and i will DIE on this hill) but it's not as wonky as people make it out to be. lot of the screen shots that look weird are because they're frames when the animation is moving and some are even edited for the love of god lmao.
to me crystal does not deserve the hate it has (it totally deserved toei getting bashed for not putting enough effort, yes, but it doesn't deserve the hate because it's actually GOOD)

So one thing that KIND OF grinds my gears is how 30 years after the manga publication, people still insist on using the whole “Tuxedo Mask is useless” discourse. It was funny at one point. But when comparing the different versions of Mamoru and pushing the way he was done dirty by the 90s anime onto the Manga and SMC/SME versions of him is just... no.
MAMORU IS POWERFUL, OKAY?! HE IS. HE’S NOT JUST ARM CANDY (tho lbr, the way he looks in glasses is just UNFAIR), he is a substantial character who (according to the manga):
has his own crystal (The Golden Crystal is Earth's Sailor Crystal, therefore his crystal) which is basically akin to Usagi's (according to Helios via the Dream arc)
has his own attack that is not just throwing roses (Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber)
has psychometry (he's basically a touch psychic) and the power to heal
has the power to sustain life, as he does with Chibiusa during the Infinity Arc
has a psychic connection to Usagi herself (aka how he always knew how to find her, we basically learn this through the Dream arc as well when Mamoru meets Usagi before the big battle saying "I heard you calling me" when there was no way he could have physically heard her calling for him with how far away they both were from each other)
TECHNICALLY HAS POWER OVER THE DREAM REALM AS WELL. Helios is a priest from Elysium (The dream realm and heart of the Earth), which is under Mamoru's domain as Prince of Earth. He also has prophetic dreams
IS the male equivalent of Sailor Earth. Naoko has said this herself.
He's a lot more powerful than the 90s anime made him out to be. He's not just fated to rule over the Earth just because. He's part of Usagi's support system and more importantly, he's her partner. They are equal in power. That's why they are so powerful together.
THIS IS A WE STAN CHIBA MAMORU/TUXEDO MASK BLOG. WE STAN A SUPPORTIVE, KIND, CONFIDENT-IN-HIS-OWN-MASCULINITY-SO-HE-DOESN’T-FEEL-THREATENED-BY-HIS-POWERFUL-AF-GIRLFRIEND KING ON THIS BLOG. And NO ONE asked for this discourse but I just NEEDED TO SAY IT.

(1) The funny thing is that the 90s anime didn't really expand on the plot of the manga at all. If anything, most of the time it COMPRESSED it because by the point it had to wrap up a season it only had a few episodes left. So instead of a long build-up towards the finale things just suddenly started happening. Filler arcs don't count because they're completely forgotten afterwards and barely affect the story at all.
(2) My favorite example is Infinity. S took an entire sub-arc to reintroduce Chibiusa, two sub-arcs to introduce Hotaru (both happening right away in the manga and being important to the plot), then had Pharaoh 90 DEFEATED OFFSCREEN and wasted the final two episodes wrapping up some loose ends. What in the name of Sailor Cosmos is that? And don't get me started on SuperS, which had so much filler it DIDN'T EVEN FINISH THE MAIN PLOT.
I mean look this when it comes Sailor Moon S and Comparing each episode with the manga/crystal.
SMC A 27 parts 1 and 2 - S 90,92,112
SMC A 28-  S 107,111
SMC A 29- S 93,144,120
SMC A 30- S 122
SMC A 31- S 121
SMC A 32- S 123
SMC A 33- S 111,124
SMC A 34 -S 125
SMC A 35- S 125
SMC A 36- S 125
SMC A 37- S 125
SMC A 38- S 125- 127(mostly 126) , Supers 128, Stars 167
One episode alone aka episode 125 is FIVE acts in the manga!
Shit Act 38 takes three episodes for three different seasons to cover...
Which is not good in the since Infinity is probably the most meatiest arcs in the series.
That's why I think it was such a bad idea to have the manga and anime pretty much being written at the same time.
I wish the manga was farther ahead before they decided to do the anime but Toei was greedy fucks which they continue to be now.

My quick thoughts on Sailor Moon Crystal episode 1
Tumblr media
Okay.. so despite the lousy animation I like the art style compared to Sailor Moon Eternal. It’s much more original and could’ve been pulled off so much better if the animation wasn’t so bad.
Tumblr media
She looked so cute!
Also, I think episode 1 of SMC is much better than episode 1 of the 90s anime. I don’t know what it was. The soundtrack was phenomenal and I really like how the manga sets up the story and how Crystal handled it compared to classic. I found it quite enjoyable to watch, because I genuinely love the first arc of the manga and it’s nice to see it animated so accurately. Though I know this won’t last because of the changes with the Shitennou and because I don’t like the Black Moon arc and the Infinity arc in the manga. (At least the story in the eternal movies and stars will be really good).
Tumblr media
Hearing Moon Pride and Gekkou in the context of an actual episode is very surreal to me because I’ve only recently seen season 3, so it was really fun to experience hearing those beautiful songs. Especially since I like Moon Pride more than Moonlight Densetsu. (Moon Pride is so badass and feminine and I love it).
Tumblr media
But overall I really enjoyed this episode, and I hope coming around again I’ll like the other episodes too, but personally I prefer these types of episodes compared to the dramatic high-stake ones at the end of each arc. The pacing in this episode compared to the end of the Black Moon arc in Crystal is much better. I understand it was a web series at first but I definitely think the first two parts of the series could’ve been improved greatly if the animation was better, because looking at it now I think the style they went with is quite nice. (Despite Usagi’s giant head and odango buns that are barely on connected to her lmao)
Tumblr media
Thanks for reading if you did! I’m going to try to rewatch with a more positive mindset this time around. But I know, like the 90s series and manga, it’ll have its low points.

Cristina Vee (Sailor Mars’ english VA) and Christine Marie Cabanos (Sailor Saturn’s english VA) were at a Fan Expo panel and I was able to ask them what their favourite scenes were to voice for their respective Sailor Moon roles.
Christine said she liked her scenes in Sailor Moon Crystal (Hotaru is more active in the Infinity arc so makes sense). Cristina Vee says she liked recording for the conversation between Usagi and Rei in episode 195 about Seiya and Mamoru. She then also added in that for whatever reason, she also liked recording for the scene where the Shitennou immediately died in SMC (She was laughing so maybe she meant that as a joke but she did seem to find the sudden switch from saving them to them dying as kinda funny).

Do you think the different design in the SMC movies is due to the bigger popularity of the Pretty Cure franchise? I have the feeling since PC is more popular atm they are trying to drag in the same audience and the result... I likee iiit! (I loved the first SMC designs. Infinity arc's design was nice too, but the one for the movies looks terrible)
That’s definitely possible! Precure is definitely one of if not the most popular and successful magical girl series as of now (in Japan, that is, the only place it really matters) and it’s also owned and produced by Toei. So I can see Toei trying to emulate the aesthetic of Precure. Too bad they didn’t also copy the elaborate and beautiful transformation sequences...
I actually do like the style of the new Eternal series, but I can see why others might think it’s too generic.

sailor moon crystal is a shitshow (but you probably already knew that)
incoming rant brought on by the anime matsuri interview because it made one thing perfectly clear: Toei has not learned a goddamned thing.
this post is not concerned with the animation style/quality/whatever. I’ve made my opinions on that quite clear and I am not up for fielding arguments about the merits of the animation. this is strictly about how Toei has been handling one of their flagship franchises. tl;dr:
Tumblr media
first, for context, here’s a quick ‘n’ dirty timeline of the series thus far:
series announcement: 7/2012, initially planned for 7/2013 release to coincide with 20th anniversary.
first delay announcement: 4/2013
toei claims they’re still aiming for a 2013 release: 8/2013 (20th anniversary has now come and gone)
jk! now it’s july 2014: 1/2014
dark kingdom: 7/2014-1/2015 (13 episodes)
black moon: 1/2015-7/2015 (13 episodes)
infinity: 4/2016-6/2016 (13 episodes)
1/25/2017 - yes, there will be more crystal
6/30/2017 - and it will be movies
late march 2018 (25th anniversary is later this year) - at a Q&A, editor Osano Fumio (”Osa-P”) and director Chiaki Kon estimate that the movies won’t be coming for another 1 to 2 years.
look at the pacing of the infinity arc. if they had gone at that pace this whole time, we’d have gotten through the end of the series some time in 2016, maybe early 2017 depending on breaks, etc. and still had time to do side stories, like Casablanca Memories or the Chibi-Usa Picture Diaries, that have never gotten a proper animated adaptation. hell, maybe Parallel Sailor Moon could get a short. as of this writing, we’ve gotten 39 episodes in 45 months (roughly 3.75 years). to put that into perspective, they could’ve aired one episode per month and we’d still be in the Dream arc by now. (by the way, if by some chance a Toei exec is reading this, that’s not a suggestion)
for comparison, let’s look at Dragonball, another Toei flagship franchise that got new content right around the same time: just over two years passed between the newest Dragonball films, Battle of Gods and Resurrection F (late March ‘13 and mid-April ‘15). DBSuper went into production in the intervening time and teasers started in June ‘15.
the difference is that Toei is managing DB like they actually give a shit about it. they’ve been appropriately pacing out the PR and hype to keep the fanbase engaged. they haven’t taken erratic breaks in production. the amount of time that went by between the end of infinity, the announcement that a follow-up would be happening, and that the follow-up would be a theatrical release does not suggest that Toei knew what Crystal’s next step was going to be. this isn’t a thought-out plan of action, it’s laying the tracks in front of the train (see above).
how about the Clear Card arc of Cardcaptor Sakura? it was announced in late November 2016 and began airing this January. no several-month schedule slips, no need for a bizarre airing arrangement, no “just buy the blu-ray” excuses. because Madhouse, unlike Toei, is giving one of its most well-known series the care it deserves.
Toei’s management of SMC has been slipshod and frankly baffling from the beginning. (Korra, Steven Universe, and Miraculous Ladybug fans, I know you know at least some of this feeling.) all signs point to Toei not knowing what they want to do with the franchise, much less how they’re going to do it, and not caring enough to either get their shit together in one fell swoop or know when to fold ‘em.
at this rate, I’ll be amazed if Toei finishes Crystal by the time I make enough lawyer money to singlehandedly fund a better remake (or a proper US release of the musicals, which, let’s be honest, are the remakes we actually deserved).
in conclusion:

Top 5 Sailor Moon Episodes
ASK ME MY “TOP 5/TOP 10” ANYTHING!
I thought about this and... I’m just going to stick with Crystal for a couple o reasons: 1)There’s 200 episodes of the classic anime and combining that with Crystal for this list like... idk how I’d narrow it own to five. 2)I have so much bee with the original anime after reading the manga like a dozen times that I’d en up going o on a salty tangent soooo just SMC it is.
S01E01: Usagi -Sailor Moon- (It’s the episode that starts it all, the first act of the manga that beings the adventure we go on with this brave, ditzy young girl and her friends and it captures the opening chapter so beautifully. This was the Sailor Moon I wanted, I knew it right from the start)
S01E09: Serenity -Princess- (The moment where Mamoru’s death triggers Usagi’s memories of her past life as Princess Serenity. When those memories come flooding back to Mamo and the Senshi too. All their grief and happiness, all the confusion and turmoil it causes them. It’s heartbreaking but the episode is also incredibly beautiful.)
S02E11: Showdown -Death Phantom- (Another heartbreaking but beautiful episode. Pluto - who has been alone and isolated for thousands of years until Small Lady came along - breaks the commands the original Queen Serenity gave her and leaves the Space-Time Door to freeze time at the cost of her own life so she can help and feel useful, to be close to the royal family and senshi that she loves so much. Her death undoes the dark powers that made Small Lady into Black Lady and enables her to become Sailor Chibi Moon. It’s... such a sad episode but it’s full of character growth.)
S03E13: Infinity 12, Infinite–Journey (Oh man where do I even begin with this episode? Defeat of the big bad; Usagi’s sheer, incredible power, her brief transformation into Neo Queen Serenity showcasing how much she has grown, the other Senshi getting their ‘super’ forms; Sailor Saturn sacrificing herself only to be reborn again as an infant Hotaru so she has another chance at life with the Outers thanks to Usagi and the Legendary Silver Crystal; the beautiful hints at the Dream ar right at the end??? My emotions were all over the place)
S03E08: Infinity 7 Transformation, Super Sailor Moon (Listen, episodes in magical girl series where a character gets a power up are always something I have bias towards, but Usagi’s transformation into Super Sailor Moon (and later Eternal when we eventually get the darn ream arc animated) is just so incredible. I love the sequence, I love the music, and I love how Usagi does this with the combined powers of herself, the Senshi, Mamoru and Chibiusa because THEY are what makes Usagi stronger, they are why she fights, why she never gives up and continues to grow stronger and stronger and her transformation in Super Sailor Moon embodies all of that. This episode shows how far Usagi has come. She’s not a scared crybaby any more. She’s a true warrior who does not like to fight but understands she needs to to protect those she loves and the Earth itself. Super Sailor Moon is born from her desire for them all to understand one another, to be together and protect one another. We also get Hotaru’s transformation into Mistress 9 and damn i that part isn’t horrific and harrowing.

If I remember correctly, the newest edition of the manga - the one SMC has been following act by act - has a total of 11 chapters/acts, the first one of which is double-length (similarly to the Infinity arc), while the remaining ten are standard length. That would give as a total of 12 episodes of a tv series. The duration of one whole episode minus OP/ED is 20 min. 12 x 20 min. = 240 min. So, two 120 min. movies could easily cover 12 episodes' worth of material without any cuts.
Sounds promising. Assuming we do actually get 120 minutes and not 90 minutes each. I’ve been seeing people expressing concern that there won’t be enough time for everything in the Dream arc, but since I still haven’t read the manga, I’m kind of just having to take everybody’s word for it. It’s a little confusing among the fandom right now, but most of what I’m seeing is people who were concerned that they’d have trouble squeezing everything into a regular season and now they’re doubly concerned about squeezing it all into two movies.
(At this point, I probably won’t read the manga until after Crystal is done. Or at least not read past the point that Crystal has gotten to. I can’t count the number of movies that fell flat for me because I read the book first. I’d like my first experience with each arc to be Crystal and then I’ll read the manga after.)

I finally watched the last three episodes of SMC Infinity and I forgot they changed ‘Usako’ to ‘Usa’ which I’m not feeling. I know Mamoru calls Usagi that but more in different context (like when he’s annoyed because she’s, once again, to late for their morning date).
But one of my favourite moments is in the Infinity final when Usagi lets herself fall into Pharaoh 90 and he just screams that schmoopy nickname. So I was totally expecting this:
Tumblr media
Especially since the voice actor is so good!
So that’s one of my least favourite changes in Crystal so far (the art style is still just okay for me. I liked the more in-depth colours and detail in the hair from the first two arcs). I want Usagi and Mamoru call each other Usako and Mamo-chan until they’re silver and lavender haired respectively and for another thousand years, too. ;)
