Advert Alchemy: Thinkbox’s Trick
In this series, Squideo has examined the best ways to turn advertising content into gold. Now that we’ve broken down the eight key ingredients, it’s time to dive deep into some examples of stellar advertising. This week, the advert in question was picked by Squideo’s Video Producer, Lesley Ovington.
When asked why this Thinkbox advert had become her favourite, Lesley said: “I love the entire series with Harvey because it’s so funny. I also had a Jack Russell Terrier growing up, and these adverts always reminded me of him. The entire series is great but the first one, Every Home Needs a Harvey, remains the best.”

Thinkbox is unlike other companies analysed in this series, as it’s a marketing body for commercial television in the United Kingdom. Since 2005, Thinkbox has existed to manage the advertising for British TV channels and help businesses marketing on these networks meet their marketing objectives.
It’s shareholders are four major UK television networks: Channel 4, ITV, Sky Media and UKTV. As the trade body for these hugely popular networks, Thinkbox has needed to think outside the box when enticing businesses to advertise. All of these channels have hugely successful shows linked to them, and the advertising produced by Thinkbox had to match the creative energy of its shareholders.

Made with Red Brick Road, the advertising agency behind the iconic ‘Every Little Helps’ Tesco slogan, Thinkbox aired its Every Home Needs a Harvey advert in 2010 – five years after the trade body was created and was still relatively unknown to the general public. Every Home Needs a Harvey was only their second television advert ever; the first also made by Red Brick Road. According to the agency, the brief from Thinkbox was to educate media planners and marketing directors about the power of TV advertising.
“‘Harvey’ was born – a resourceful, talented dog, who uses TV to tell stories and to persuade. His first TV outing, created by us in 2010, was voted Ad of the Year by ITV1 viewers. TV ad revenues reached a record £5bn in 2014, continuing 5 years of successive growth.”
Television has seen a lot of competition in recent years as an advertising destination, especially as more viewers move away from television to advert-free streaming platforms. Comparatively cheaper adverts can also be run on social media, with algorithms used to ensure it ends up in front of the ideal demographic for your product. As Red Brick Road proves, however, revenue can still be generated from television adverts. Businesses invested £1.2 billion GBP in television advertising in 2021, a 42% increase in spending compared to 2020. With the cost-of-living crisis forcing consumers to unsubscribe from costly streaming services, this revenue may grow further as viewers return to public networks like Channel 4 and ITV.
Thinkbox & Me
ITV1 viewers named Every Home Needs a Harvey Ad of the Year in 2010, and Red Brick Road went on to produce two additional Harvey adverts for Thinkbox between 2010 and 2014. The advert was clearly popular when it aired, but that was thirteen years ago. What was it about this advert that stuck in the memories of so many people?

Super Sell
Show don’t tell. That’s what Thinkbox accomplished by running Every Home Needs a Harvey. What better way to demonstrate the power of advertising than to create an advert about advertising. In the advert, Harvey presents a video to his potential adopters which sells the idea of choosing him amongst the line up of rescue dogs. The other dogs look cute, but the video shows everything else Harvey can offer.
To marketers watching the advert, it also showed what television marketing still had to offer. Times have changed, and mass public adverts are no longer constrained to intermission breaks, newspapers and billboards. As we explored in Advert Alchemy: The Location, modern marketers have an overwhelming choice of advertising destinations from social media to video games to eggs (that’s not a typo, CBS put adverts on eggs in 2006, go read the blog if you haven’t already). But television adverts haven’t been chased off the stage, advertisers just need to be more creative to attract attention away from phone screens.
Heavenly Harvey
The star of the advert, Harvey, was played by Sykes, a dog actor who appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Young Victoria and Doctor Who, as well as other notable films and television shows. In the year of his debut advert, he also acted in a John Smith’s Brewery advert alongside Peter Kay.
In the wake of the advert, Sykes’ Facebook page had 11,600 friends and he was getting offers to open pet shops around the country. Not bad for a rescue dog. He eventually retired in 2016 after going deaf, ending Thinkbox’s Harvey adverts in the process. Because who could follow such a good boy?
Monumental Music
Set to the 1974 song You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet by Canadian rock band Bachman-Turner Overdrive, the audience – like Harvey’s potential adopters – are quickly hooked into watching the advert. Like Cadbury’s Gorilla advert, the choice of such a popular song cannot be underestimated in the success of this advert.
The song peaked at number 2 in the UK singles charts the year of its release, beaten to the top by a Christmas song (Lonely This Christmas, Mud), which surprised the band who had been reluctant to release the song. You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet was introduced to a new generation in the mid-2000s thanks to one of Thinkbox’s shareholders: ITV. The network used the song for several years during its coverage of Formula One grand prix races, which reignited sales of this insanely catchy single thirty years after its release.

How to Conduct a Competitive Analysis
A Competitive Analysis is a review of the competing companies in the market in order to better position our brand and product. A product’s positioning determines how we communicate and make offers to our target customers.

There are two types of competitors:
Direct Competitors - companies that sell the same product or service to the same target audience
Indirect Competitors - companies that do not sell the same product but their products satisfy the same need. For example: Peloton programs could be interpreted as an indirect competitor to an in-person personal training program.
In the roofing industry, my competitive analysis allows me to see how competitive each local county I was in, and every marketing channel l was considering. This was exciting because I found roofing was a far less developed industry overall than the previous industries I had competed such as Corporate eLearning.
These were some of the comparisons I made in my Competitive Analysis..
Product Marketing and Product Quality: I looked at all the companies per count and recorded their services offered, products offered (including materials they liked to use and quality of their work); followed by the structure of their offers and most importantly price structure (including price point and payment process).
This allowed me to make a product positioning map.

Website: I looked at their web copy (particularly brand voice) and USP (unique selling point they used in their messaging); user experience and site navigation of their website design (to see how easily they pushed a sale online) and finally SEO word count and back link analysis (how often are they referred to online)
Marketing Channels: I looked at for the frequency each competitor was on each different marketing channel to determine their marketing strategy.
A Competitive Analysis of digital marketing channels includes (but isn't limited to):
Socia Media Performance — their engagement on Instagram and Facebook posts, and the guality of their content
Paid Ads Performance — a keyword analysis of which website links and keywords competitors are bidding on in a Google Search; along with reverse engineering their sales funnel through joining an email list from their ad to see their customer journey to the sale.
Email Marketing - their inbox performance (which inbox did they land in), email form (simple text or multimedia), frequency, offers and content.
Google and Forum Reviews — looking at their customer experience through online reviews to see their strengths and weaknesses, how actively they use their Google Business Listing, along with how frequently they get a review and how many total.
Press releases - including the press named, the date and the backlink.

When interpreting a Competitive Analysis chart, it's important to include current marketshare, their general marketing strategy analysis, and differences in target market (there can be overlaps) and customer ratings.
The obvious thing to do with a Competitive Analysis is to assess if your pricing strategy is accepted in your industry. This can be tricky because a marketer really needs to know who is their target customer and who isn't, which is why they did a buyer persona with a lead value attached to them (what are they willing to pay, using data the company already has).
I like to look for market gaps to provide services that a competitor either does or doesn't always provide if it helps meet my profit (and doesn't significantly increase my expenses, including time expense); and market trends (to see if many competitors are moving in the same direction in decision making regarding their marketing strategy, product quality and marketing technology that they use).
A Competitive Analysis will also allow a marketer to begin to have more of a sense of where their customers congregates online or otherwise (information that became really clear in my later market research on the channels themselves).

Do you own any shirts with wording on them?  I may have a few but generally I'm not a fan of text on my clothes.
^ If so, what does your favourite one look like?  It's not a statement shirt per se but I like my Se So Neon band shirt, because it has their tour dates at the back and I've always wanted a band shirt that has all their stops printed out hehehe.
What beverage do you prefer to drink in the mornings?  I need my coffee always otherwise I'd get super out of focus.
Tell me what some of your nearest & dearest like to eat for breakfast.  My dad likes to have either tapa or dried fish...or both, he has a huge appetite. Eggs with runny yolks also a must for him. My mom likes sardines and grilled eggplant. My sister's easy to please and would already be happy with just a cheesy omelette.
I've rarely had breakfast with Angela but if I had to take an intelligent guess, I'd think she's the type to like a Western breakfast, so she might be into bacon and eggs.

Have you added any books to your shelves lately?  Yes, Angela and Hans got me Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 and The Midnight Library for Christmas. I haven't gotten started on either yet save for being around 20 pages in with the first book, but it's something I'm planning on getting to once I take my resignation breather.
Have you bought any new cosmetics or toiletries lately? Which?  I got BB cream and hair serum. The latter has been a fucking game changer and I can't believe it took me this long to start using one. I can almost hear my frizzy, thick hair whispering 'thank you' hahaha.
When was the last time you bought a new pair of shoes?  I got a pair of running shoes last December. I thought it would finally convince me to take up running but it hasn't done shit so far lmao. Maybe sometime this year.

Are you looking forward to anything within the next few days?  Not really. The next few things I'm excited for would be leaving the company, seeing Andi, and watching Miss Saigon on stage but all three things aren't happening until April.
How have you mostly been feeling today?  Relaxed. I haven't really felt this at ease since December. January was a big mental and emotional trainwreck, so I'm really grateful to have this feeling again. I spent the whole day just watching a Kdrama with my sister and playing a game on my phone, and sometimes such lazy days are just what you need.

New details have emerged in the 2019 murder of a Vacaville native since the California Highway Patrol’s Golden Gate Division put out a social media post calling upon the public for more information.
The family of Robert Edwards Marques is also seeking answers.
“We just want to know who murdered him, for closure,” Hiroko Edwards, Marques’ mother, said.
At approximately 6 p.m., June 15, Marques, 33, was murdered on Interstate 80 at the Orange Drive offramp. According to newly released information uncovered by CHP officers, Marques’ truck was being followed by a newer dark grey or black Toyota Prius moments before Marques was murdered. Detectives were able to get the last three digits of the license plate, which were “712.”
Marques, who was living in Sacramento at the time of his death, had grown up on Brown Street in Vacaville where he attended Country High School. He also had an 11-year-old daughter
Firmina, Marques’ younger sister, said he had a successful trucking business called Edwards Freight and performed as a rapper under the name “Big Cholo,” whose songs have cumulatively racked up millions of views on streaming sites.
Marques’ murder has been tragic for his family, and since no arrests have been made, Firmina said this has given family members a lot of anxiety.
“We’re not walking in fear of the public, but it’s definitely a lot harder to trust our surroundings and move around because we still don’t know who’s done this to him,” she said. “We find it very malicious of somebody to kill somebody in broad daylight.”
“We’ve all been waiting as patiently as we can to get answers,” she added.
Edwards said her son’s death has been very painful and that it is often very hard to keep moving forward, but continues to do so for her children and grandchildren.
“I have to stay together for them,” she said. “I have to make their lives positive still, although somebody took my son’s life. I still have to keep on living. I do have some positive professional people in my life that are helping me work on and deal with what happened to my son. That makes it a little better.”
Edwards said she knows very little about the details of Marques’ murder and wants the case to be solved for closure. Nonetheless, she said she does not wish any ill will toward his perpetrators.
“Whoever murdered him, I don’t wish anything bad on them,” she said. “I just wish the court can handle their business. It seems to me like they should know.”
Firmina said she is pleased with the progress being made by the CHP during the investigation.
“We are really grateful that CHP investigators are doing the best that they can,” she said.
