I love Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town. But also, tfw you can’t show your Anyone your favorite bachelor/bachelorette bc they’ll 9 outta 10 times say “They look like a child 🤨” , and then you have to launch into the spiel and explain that Yes, they do look like a lot like a child in this specific, odd, chibi art-style, but:
1. The only people who kinda don’t look like children are the people who are already moderately-to-severely unhappily married; or at least moderately-to-severely unhappily laid and absolutely not willing to mingle again; or the priest and police officer with questionable work ethics. And also absolutely not willing to mingle like that. Or with you.
2. Or they’re not even human. They’re some Duck God instead.
3. And there’s kid-ier looking children who are actually considered kids in the game, as opposed to everyone else.
4. And no matter what you do to your avatar, they also look like a child. Despite the age never being specified, they are the same age as the bachelorettes and bachelors. And that age is APPARENTLY of marital age.
5. and working age, and living alone age, and traveling alone age, and house-owning age, and land-owning age, and seemingly drinking age, and wreaking-economic-havoc-by-being-able-to-buy-and-sell-this-whole-entire-shocking-diety-ridden-rock-town age.
So we just gotta do a lot of taking the game’s word here and praying. And hoping that they’ll look a touch older in any future games if they even show up again-

I like Stardew Valley as much as the next terminally online recluse, but seeing it get constantly brought up in reviews of remakes of games that were originally released thirteen years before it was is deeply irritating.
A Wonderful Life and Friends of Mineral Town went for a light jog so that Stardew Valley could run, bitching that the devs remade them instead of a different game is incredibly churlish.

30 days of Harvest Moon Day 6 - best friends / learn
lumina and marie having a cozy book club date!
it would be so cool if the SOS:FOMT cast visited the SOS:AWL cast like their descendants do in the ds games…!
i really love Marivia and Leona’s bond and scenes together in DS:CUTE, so naturally i want their ancestors to interact too!! plus their redesigns just look cute together (*´∇`*)

Harvestober Day 11: Cliff & Daughter from SOS:FOMT.
I've done a few drawings of HM ladies as moms but haven't drawn the bachelors as dads, so I wanted to fix that! I chose Cliff from the FOMT reboot because I think I might marry him in my next file :)

maybe you answered this already, but how do you feel about the sos remake of fomt?
Hi anon! First of all, I'd like to thank you for your patience, as well as apologize for taking so long to get back to your message. Around the time you messaged me, work and school started piling up for me to the point where life became a bit overwhelming. It's the holiday season now so everything's a lot less hectic, and hopefully I can dedicate some time to my hobbies before it packs on again. ☺
Anyway... I'm not sure if I answered this already either actually, but either way, I'm always happy to talk about my opinions regarding Harvest Moon. 😊 I, uh... wrote a lot, lmao so my doozy of an answer is under the cut.
In my personal opinion, the SOS:FoMT remake was... underwhelming.
I was initially excited when I heard news of the remake, given BTN--and by extension, FoMT--is not only one of my favorite Harvest Moon games, but favorite games of all time. There's a ton of nostalgia behind it for me, and the cast of characters is by far the one I love most (HM64 was my first Harvest Moon game, and I remember being ecstatic to find and play Back To Nature, given the same cast of characters for the most part were in the game). I also love the town itself. It feels alive and like an actual community where everyone knows everyone.
So I guess that made the remake (which I'd call more of a "remaster" than anything, honestly) all the more disappointing for me.
There are things I do appreciate about it, like the quality of life changes (finally, I can stack items in my rucksack and can hold more than TWO THINGS at a time! and thank God, I can finally walk over crops so I can FINALLy get that stupid middle spot that's always neglected lolllll), and I'm grateful for the extra heart events AND for same-sex marriage (long overdue, but I digress), among other improvements.
But nearly everything else, I think, was a missed opportunity and waste of potential to really make it shine:
-- The graphics are off-putting, to say the least, and a weird attempt at making things "nostalgic" and "cute", but somehow manages to miss the mark on both (in my opinion).
-- The removal of rival marriages--along with the rival heart events and rival children--is a HUGE misstep and takes away from much of the life of the town. It no longer feels like a little community, but like a hollow, empty version of HM:FoMT.
-- Along with the removal of rival marriages... I feel like a lot of the "magic" of the older games involving some of the harder-hitting stories--like May's mother abandoning her, or Harris's unrequited feelings for Aja, or Aja running away from home--is just... missing. Rick's hatred of Kai feels more irrational because much of the implications of his hatred being tied to his resentment toward his father have been removed (since Kai and Popuri no longer get married), Kai's personality has been watered down from the hated suave ladies' man to just "a nice guy", Harris goes from having a storyline to merely existing, etc. Maybe this is more of a complaint about HM:FoMT too since some of those things were missing there too, but imo my point still stands. It makes SoS:FoMT feel too cutesy and happy-go-lucky, and therefore, again, hollow.
-- Jennifer and Brandon both feel out of place from the rest of the town, and I cannot state emphatically enough how apathetic I feel toward both of them. I guess you could potentially argue that they are both outcasts and therefore they ARE out of place, but I think you can make "outcast" characters and still make them feel like they belong in the cast.
-- There's just... SO MUCH they could have fixed and added to this game that they didn't. I mean, it's a Switch remake, for goodness sake--the Switch is a powerful console! Why is the Frisbee Toss on year 1 still a cut black screen and "yay thanks for coming see you next year"? Why do the characters still just stand around or just walk back and forth, instead of giving them things to do? Why aren't the buildings more fleshed out with decorations, or the characters given different schedules, or different outfits? Why is getting on and off the horse such a monumental task?????
-- (To further drive my point above about the Switch being a powerful console and how the remake didn't even bother attempting to take advantage of it, this post by angelcou drives home this point very well. If you haven't read it, it sums up my thoughts about this all really nicely.)
There's probably a TON more that I can add here which I didn't remember, but overall, I think the remake didn't do the game any justice. When the announcement for SoS:AWL came out, I was--as I was with the SoS:FoMT announcement--ecstatic beyond belief, to say the least. But given my feelings about the FoMT remake, and the additionally underwhelming release of SoS:PooT, I remain firmly planted in the camp of "cautiously optimistic".
What are all your thoughts about the remake?

I re-made a spreadcheat with easy good gifts for sos:fomt candidates and villagers (lost the physical paper I had oop) and it made me realize that theres like DOUBLE the amount of male villagers as there are female villagers.

I kind of hated the system in the SoS:FoMT remake that capped the affection level of your livestock.
If you wanted to reach full hearts with your animals, you had to breed multiple generations. But there was only so much space in your barn/coop, so you'd inevitably have to sell some of them.
I don't want to sell any of my animals! They're my family!

On top of playing Harvest Moon SNES, I’ve also revisited a little of the original GBA Friends of Mineral Town. Tbh though, I’m already kind of bored of that.
When I was very young, I used to hate the concept of HM games just ending after a set period. After all that hard work, why would I want to suddenly lose it all? But I’ve come to realize now that, at least for the earliest games, the point of that was to grade you for all the work you’ve done and the accomplishments you’ve made. You couldn’t simply waste your time doing nothing in the three or so years you were given; you had limited time to build your ranch and your life from the ground up. It was this urgency that incentivized the games’ core strategizing and, at the end of it, what made the villagers’ high praise and (at least in HM SNES) your final ranch score all the more worth it. And it emboldened you to do even better the next time.
There’s games that allow you to keep playing indefinitely after getting your evaluation. But at that point, what is there to even do anymore? You’d probably have done everything there is to do by then and, aside from some things that were missed, there wouldn’t be anymore goals to strive for in a post-end game. Or at least none that keeps you engaged for long.
Returning to FoMT, I already feel that. The game doesn’t really have an end goal. You’re given the ranch and left with all the time in the world to do anything. You can set little goals for yourself--like amassing full barns, getting all the upgraded tools, completing the recipe book, and see every social event--but there isn’t really anything of an end to look back on all you’ve done. There is no ending in that game, unless you consider getting married to be that ending. And that may as well, since the game’s credits roll after marriage.
I’ve seen people comment that FoMT turns boring once you get married. And I agree, cause there just isn’t anything else to motivate you towards much less acknowledge all you’ve done. Closest there is is marrying the Harvest Goddess given her extreme requirements.
I don’t know if SoS:FoMT did anything about that and I kind of dropped out of newer BokuMono games after Magical Melody, but that was always kind of my issue with the games for some time after that. Having no timed ending is good for casual play, but I also like feeling accomplished lol. And it’s why I actually enjoy the older games more, even the hugely underrated GBC games in some ways.

Lmao I'm gonna ask you more: 🍏 gimme any of your Harvest Moon/Stardew unpopular opinions! Aaaand, what feature that you haven't seen yet do you wish the games would implement?
Lol, I'll probably regret saying this, but ask as many as you like 😅
🍏 Gimme any of your Harvest Moon/Stardew unpopular opinions!
OK, here goes: it feels like more effort was put into the combat mechanics of Stardew Valley than the farming.
Sure, the combat is a fun and unique touch, but the farming feels a little bit bare in comparison. And raising your animals and crops feels so empty when there aren't even competitions to enter them in.
I'd rather have fewer mine levels and enemies to fight if it meant the farming felt more rewarding.
🍏 What feature that you haven't seen yet do you wish the games would implement?
Ooh, that's a good question!
It's only a little thing, but I'd like it if the games allowed us to choose our pronouns for dialogue. It broke my immersion a little bit when SoS:FoMT had characters refer to me as "they" - it made it feel like they barely knew me, instead of supposedly being my good friends.
Let players input what pronouns they want to be called by, regardless of sex/gender. I don't see why it would be too difficult to implement. The games already let you input your name for the characters to say. It shouldn't be too hard to code in an option for he/she/they and him/her/them, with an option to add your own custom pronouns as well.
On a more gameplay note, I'd love the option to adopt animals. Maybe the Farm shops could have livestock that have been "returned" to them and need a good home. These animals could be half the price of the regular livestock, but maybe they gain affection at a much slower rate, or their products aren't as high value. It's your choice whether to take in these "rescues" or just buy the ordinary livestock.
Ngl, I'd love the idea of a "rescue" farm 😅
