City flag of Lincoln, Nebraska, USA
It was just adopted in January 2021 through a contest.
The winning design, entitled All Roads Lead to Lincoln, was created by Ed Mejia, a local art director and graphic designer who immigrated to the United States from El Salvador. His design was inspired by the sight of Lincoln’s skyline emerging on the otherwise flat horizon as he first drove into town. He drew inspiration from art deco architecture and native artwork displayed inside the capitol building and used intersecting lines to capture the interconnection of technology, agriculture, and commerce that have drawn people to Lincoln throughout our past, present, and into the future. The beacon featured in the center of the design symbolizes the hope and optimism that the people of Lincoln are known for, as well as our reputation as a safe harbor for those seeking to make our community their home. - Lidia Spaw Hassell

Urban Gardening 101: Heirloom Seeds
Topic: Heirloom seeds, their history, benefits, and reasons to plant them!
Tl;Dr at the end!
~~~~~~~
So, heirloom seeds. What are they? In short, heirloom seeds are very old seed varieties that have been passed down through generations. But what does that mean, really? Well, these are plants, veggies, and fruits that have been preserved via open pollination! All heirloom plants preserve the original traits from one generation to the next. This opens the door for a lot of benefits, and heirloom seeds preserve a really important part of history! Most heirloom seed varieties are over 50 years old, passed down from the original parent plants; however, some organizations require that the variety predate World War II. Moreover, heirloom seeds must be entirely true to the first plant: they cannot be hybrids, nor can they be genetically modified. So, let’s get into the benefits!
Cost
Oh, money. Capitalism is truly unyielding, isn’t it? Fortunately, heirloom seeds save a lot of money in multiple ways! First and foremost, heirlooms tend to be cheaper than hybrids or GMO seeds. Additionally, heirlooms are open-pollinated! This provides a huge range of benefits. For one, open-pollination means that the plant is able to create its own seeds that will be viable for another planting next year. Most hybrid and GMO seeds that are harvested won't always grow, which is an unexpected problem a lot of new gardeners encounter. At the very least, they won't grow up to be like the parent plant, if it grows at all. Thus, one has to continuously buy more seeds if one opts to buy GMO or hybrid. Another benefit of open pollination is disease and pest resistance! Locally adapted heirlooms in particular evolve with the environment, creating a stronger and hardier plant. You'll make your own over the years as you harvest the best seed from your plant and continue to grow it. And hey, it's pretty awesome watching nature in action! Come on, you're making your own locally adapted plants! You're gonna tell me that's not cool as hell?
Nutrition and Taste
Modern fruits and veggies that you see in your big-name grocery aren't meant to taste good or nourish you well: they're meant to be shipped. And anyone who grows heirlooms can tell the difference by taste alone - nevermind the nutrients! Heirloom vegetables have been saved for decades - in some cases even centuries - because they are the outstandingly good in home and small market gardens. Shipping isn't a concern with small growers (I mean really, how many farmer's market growers travel across however-many states and sit in a grocery store for a week? None.), which allows taste and nutritional content to take the front seat. And by god, it certainly does! A lot of modern hybrids have unfortunately sacrificed taste and nutrition in favor of yield and ease of shipping. Honestly, a lot of heirloom lovers love heirlooms for their taste alone, and who can blame them?
Steady Supply
Alright, you're probably looking at this bullet point and going "what the fuck does this mean." I promise, I'm gonna explain it. This bullet can be a pro to some people, and a con to others. Heirlooms don't produce their entire harvestable crop all at once, essentially. Instead of picking everything all at the same time, you're actually gonna gradually pick/harvest it. Essentially, you're gonna have a steady supply of produce! Some people prefer to harvest everything in one swoop, others prefer to do it gradually. Neither is better as everyone has different needs, but it's worth mentioning!
History
A smaller, but beloved, point that naturally comes up with heirlooms. By planting heirlooms, you're preserving an important part of history. And isn't it nice, knowing that you're eating the same thing your Ancestors once did? That's a capital A, baby!
If anyone has anything to add, please add on!! I'd love to hear your thoughts!!
Tl;Dr: Heirloom plants have better taste and nutritional content, are more disease & pest resistant, and preserve an important part of history. They're also more cost effective, both in the immediate and long-term, and provide a steady supply of produce instead of a large crop that goes to waste if not used or canned.
SPAW Day 1
Seed Bombs
My fiance and I have been saving paper scraps and junk mail for a month or two now, and yesterday we turned some of it into a slurry and made seed bombs!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're filled with a native wildflower mix to attract local pollinators, and we'll be tossing them around a few select locations around town.
We also have plenty of paper and seeds left, so we may make some more, or use the paper for other projects (like making sheets of paper) and scatter the seeds as-is, if we can find a good place for them to grow.
I haven't had a lot of time or energy this week but it is solarpunk action week and I did do a few relevant things in between everything else.
One of my friends has a yard with garden space for the first time this year so I planted many extra seeds (far more than I have room for on my little balcony) and made up some seed packets from my collection for him and he picked them all up this week.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's planted most of the seedlings (except the most temperature sensitive ones). Pictured is just the raised bed he finished building last weekend, but he has a bunch of grow bags for the herbs as well:
Plus, I grabbed soil so I can fill my containers and transplant my own seedlings this weekend as well. I feel like digging my hands into some dirt is exactly what I need after this week.
I collected dead nettles in our garden which my mom wanted to but on the compost. I mixed about two hands full with 200 gramm of salt and mixed it with a mixer. It's possible to add other wild herbs too, I just took what was near! Now I'm letting it dry in the sun, gonna post the result in the next few days.
SPAW April To Do
Oh god oh fuck its back and I have a million deadlines
Plant some wildflowers around the university - all this empty lawn sucks.
Remove litter from the public paths with a punk friend- and tag them #solarpunkcleanup or something because the council do not get to take credit.
Secondhand shopping for clothes and loot to repair and reuse with friends - for fashion, and for our next house.
Repot garlic plant - hes too tall for a tin can
Get back in contact with the local affordable housing group and repair cafe - they’ll need a hand setting up again post-lockdown.
Got some native pollinator favorites growing alongside some food! Heirloom carrots and turnips and, as a fun experiment, some sugar beets!
So excited for when our flowers start blooming!
Oh, and there's a few green onions I replanted and a leek, and also what will eventually be a dewberry bush for my mom and dad!
@solarpunkactionweek How'd we do for a first try?
Its the day after SPAW but I did do some SPAW-esque things so allow me to share.
I was busy with finals and packing for most of SPAW, unfortunately, but I did manage to do something Friday: I tossed some wildflower seeds around my dorm building’s walkways, and in a big mostly-empty flower bed nearby.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In hindsight, the seeds in the bed might not grow—the soil seems kinda dry and hard, so the chances of them catching on are slim. I didn’t have the time to rough up the soil, as I was supposed to be packing and moving out when I went to do this. I also tossed seeds in the areas with tall grass along the walkways and near this bulletin board-thing, so I hope those’ll grow better. I’ve seen wild peanuts grow here, and it clearly doesn’t get mowed much, so here goes nothing? I won’t be able to keep an eye on it or anything, but I figured it was worth a shot. My first foray into Guerrilla Gardening!
Yesterday (Saturday) I did another SPAW thing—sorta. I’d pulled up some extra zucchini plants I’d started in the garden and put them into their own pots and let them sit for a few weeks to make sure they Survived, and just yesterday I gave them to my Neighbor (who I will call E on this blog)! She’s been venturing into gardening recently, I’d given her some bell pepper plants in January and she’s already gotten 5 peppers from it! She’d mentioned liking Zucchini, and hey, I had extra zucchini, so I gave her my extras!
In case those don’t do well, I did start extra zucchini seeds just in case for her. But I have faith in her!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thats all I managed to do for SPAW this season, but hopefully I’ll be able to do more guerrilla gardening in the future, and sharing seedlings too!
SPAW Day 1! I did not forget but writing updates is just something I am bad at. But look at the cute vertical garden we made. This is just a shoes hanger on the wall. I still need to fill te next few rows. I also would like to make a wormbin. But I am a bit nervous on all the different rules that I have read. Let's see if I get it done this week!
I am so damn glad I gave myself permission to not be productive this Solarpunk Action Week. SPAW has generally been important week for me and I spend months planning for it, but I also know that I may have a bad week just then and promising to do something and then not being able to is excruciating, even if others understand and are supportive.
I've had a bad week. Not awful, thankfully, but I've slept poorly since my sleep medication doesn't work for me anymore, so I've been groggy and haven't had the energy or focus to do much.
I've done little tho, and that's a win and enough.
I sneaked into my brother's apartment when he was at work, in the guise of getting a bottle of May Day Mead he made. He has started to make that every year in large enough quantities that he can share with rest of the family and I really did get a bottle. But I also left potted cuttings of rhaphidophora tetrasperma, because my brother has started to show interest in plants (it took just 34 years of professional-gardener-as-grandparent and mom-and-little-sibling-love-plants levels of exposure) and he recently had birthday, so I gave my tetrasperma a haircut :D The absent mind is also a family trait, so just in case I stuck a water bottle on the planter, because the cuttings require constant moisture, and I don't trust my brother to remember water it often enough.
Tumblr media
The strawberry is slowly but surely growing too and I have been giving geraniums some outdoors time. It's still bit too chilly to have them outside full-time, but I try to ease them up little by little.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's couple more days to go. Let's see if I have more spoons for them.
Urban Gardening 101: White Fuzz on Seed Starts
Topic: White fuzz on potting soil with new seeds.
Tl;Dr at the end!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, you’ve started growing plants from seed: that’s great! Growing a plant from a tiny little seed is an incredible experience, and it saves a lot of money too. But at some point, if you haven’t already, you might notice some white fuzz growing on your seeds and/or seedlings. What is it, and what should you do about it?
Simply put, that white fuzz on your seedlings is a fungus. Fortunately, it’s very common and even easier to deal with. It’s easy to get discouraged as a new gardener, but I assure you, every indoor gardener has dealt with this before. It’s really common amongst new gardeners, and even seasoned gardeners still occasionally have their issues with it! So don’t get down on yourself! However, this is a sign that something in your plant care routine needs to change. Otherwise, they’re at risk for developing something known as damping-off disease, which will kill your new plants. But like I said, it’s easy to treat and prevent!
First and foremost, you’re gonna wanna remove the fungus from the pot. Just take a toothpick or something and scrape it off. It helps in the long run. You don’t have to get all of it, but it makes the pot look nicer and it helps minimize spreading.
Overwatering, poor drainage, and poor ventilation are the most common causes of white fungus.
Let’s talk about poor ventilation first, because it’s what I’m most guilty of. Most people, like myself, will use something like saranwrap or a plastic bag to cover their plants and speed up the germination process. It’s the same science that goes into a greenhouse, really. However, this also provides the conditions necessary to manifest fungus. So, how do you get the benefits without the drawbacks? Easy! For an hour or two every few days, take the bag/wrap off of your plants and let it breath. I’ll also play some music during this time and call it a ‘plant rec day.’ Classical music has been shown to improve yield, after all! Plus it just makes a nice atmostphere.
Now let’s talk about overwatering. It’s commonly known that fungus (and mold) love to grow in dark, damp areas. So really, the same thing applies here! Make sure you’re not watering your plant too much. Simple as that, honestly. Check the top of the soil with your finger and test how dry it is. When in doubt, look up the watering needs of the seed you’re trying to germinate.
The last big thing is poor drainage. You’ve probably heard a lot of gardeners talk about this one, and for good reason. A lot of cute, glazed pots lack a crucial feature: a drainage hole. And unfortunately, this makes it really hard for some plants to thrive! If possible, you should try and get a good terracotta pot with a drainage hole to avoid growing fungus with your plants. Or, start your seeds in some plastic germination trays. But be aware that the threat of damping-off disease lingers, even after your seeds have sprouted! When possible, try and find well-draining pots.
And finally, my favorite tip. After scraping off your fungus and taking all your preventative measures... put some cinnamon on the affected areas! Cinnamon is a great anti-fungal, and will help prevent any returns.
Thank you for reading! May you succeed in all of your growing endeavors!
Tl;Dr: Scrape off the fungus and sprinkle some cinnamon on the affected areas. Make sure you’re not overwatering by testing the soil before you water. Give your plant an hour or two of air once every few days. Make sure your pot has good drainage!
