My Spookslot diorama is done! Spookslot (Haunted Castle) is my favorite attraction at Efteling, and when they announced it was gonna leave the park I decided I wanted to make a tribute. I made the exterior of the castle and a part of the square. The castle and the floor bricks are made out of carving foam, the tree trunks are made of gardening wire and air-drying clay, and all the vegetation and foliage comes from SceneryWorkshop. It's all made at a 1:87 scale. This is my first big diorama project ever, and I've caught the fever! It's so calming and rewarding. I'm already thinking about my next project 😊 I'll miss visiting Spookslot so so much, but Efteling recently announced their new spooky attraction that'll replace it, and I'm very excited about it! 💀

A farewell drawing for Spookslot, a ghost house attraction in the Efteling which will close this Sunday, September 4th 2022. It’s been there my whole life, I remember being super scared of watching the anamatronic show when I was little, and overcame my fear because I thought the dancing of the little walls was fun to see. I’ll miss it so much...

Genuinely a little sad that Efteling closed the Spookslot (ghost castle)

To clarify, it was not a haunted house, it was basically a giant animatronic show, but it was not furry mascots dancing around, it was basically an abbey and graveyard that was the entire animatronic. And as Danse Macabre played, the grave dirt would stir as those buried come alive, there was a holographic violin, there were lights insinuating flames and floods coming from inside the abbey as robed ghosts walked along the pews.

At the crescendo of the song, it all came alive together, even the balustrades would gently waltz to the music. It was not horror, it was just a really cool attraction with a ghostly and mildly spooky theme! But they closed it down because it wouldn’t get enough visitors :/

It was always my go-to attraction when I went to the Efteling- if I went to the Efteling, I would enjoy the Spookslot for a bit.

(And fun fact, Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights clip was filmed there)

Efteling in the Netherlands has announced the replacement for Spookslot after it closes at the end of summer: An entirely spooky miniland.

In 2024, a new themed area will be created in Efteling that houses the new Danse Macabre attraction! 🕯️ The new 17,000 m² themed area will be scarier than ever! 😱 In the new hair-raising attraction, you will be immersed in a thrilling story featuring the unforgettable music from the Spookslot Haunted House. 🎻 The themed area has a mysterious setting, in which the 20-metre high attraction building immediately catches the eye.

A special post to say goodbye to an iconic haunted attraction that played its last show today, on September 4th 2022 : Spookslot from Efteling. This attraction opened in 1978 and was the biggest haunted house in a theme park before Phantom Manor.

Even if i never got the chance to experience it for myself, i deeply enjoyed its concept of animated tableau and story. I am very sad to know it’s gone. This was a classic ride from this dutch theme park and classed as legacy among its attractions.

Yet, its legacy will carry on with the opening of a brand new attraction called ‘Danse Macabre’, using again that iconic score by Camille Saint Saens and paying some nods to that old version of the haunted castle.

Farewell old friend, Rest in Peace...

Today’s the final showing for this ride, ever, as it closes today and will be demolished to make space for a new attraction. I’ve got a massive soft spot for Spookslot and probably always will. It is what made my love for horror and hauntings grow as a kid, was my first discovery of classical music as a whole, and still has me in awe. They don’t make them like this anymore <3

One of the very old attractions in my favorite amusement park is going to be torn down next week and replaced with a more modern/updated version along with an appropriately themed area. It's the Haunted Castle (Spookslot) in the Efteling and it used to give me nightmares as a kid (especially one animatronic, hgh).

Because I will miss it dearly, I felt inspired to doodle a twist on Horrortale inspired by the Haunted Castle and its iconic soundtrack of Danse Macabre.
