Happy (almost) feast day of the most remarkably unremarkable saint!  St. Thérèse of Lisieux comics all October long!
___
AUTHOR'S NOTE: This is the first repost I've done for Tomics (Tomics Resurrections don't count; get a life).  It was first posted last year, but there was an error in the original.  Like dear Thérèse, I am, by nature, a proud and sensitive soul, so I suffered greatly from this humiliation.  Thus, I resolved to repost the corrected version THIS year, along with a month of St. Thérèse cartoons to make up for my failure.  I just listened to "Story of a Soul" to prepare, and I think I'm ready.  Pray for me, for if I err again, my heart may collapse. JOKE-OGRAPHY: Also known as St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, she was a stubborn, emotional little girl who led a surprisingly normal life.  Inspired by her older sisters, she entered a convent earlier than was usually allowed.  She died young of tuberculosis, but during her short life, she grew remarkably humble and wise.  Her dedication to showing love in the smallest details of everyday life has led some to say that she -- more than many lofty theologians -- rediscovered the Gospel, and in the simplest way.

A Prayer to St. Therese of Lisieux
O little St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, who during your short life on earth became a mirror of angelic purity, of love strong as death, and of wholehearted abandonment to God, now that you rejoice in the reward of your virtues, cast a glance of pity on me as I leave all things in your hands. Make my troubles your own - speak a word for me to our Lady Immaculate, whose flower of special love you were - to that Queen of heaven 'who smiled on you at the dawn of life. ' Beg her as the Queen of the heart of Jesus to obtain for me by her powerful intercession, the grace I yearn for so ardently at this moment, and that she join with it a blessing that may strengthen me during life. Defend me at the hour of death, and lead me straight on to a happy eternity. Amen

Prayer Request
I have been living away from my family, friends, and support system for about two years now for work. There is finally a job in my field posted in the area where my family lives, and I just submitted an application for this job. The situation is complicated, but the summary is that some people that may be involved my the hiring decision could dislike me for personal reasons and may attempt to thwart my application on that basis.
I desperately want to move back to my community and build a life there. I am going to move back anyway at some point, even if it means giving up the career I am passionate about and have worked so hard to do, but this would give me the opportunity to live at home AND do what I love. It would be an absolute dream come true.
I am anxiously awaiting a response from the recruiter, then it will be in the hands of management (who as I said, have mixed feelings about me). Please pray they give me an interview and at least give me a chance. The Lord is in this, I know, regardless of the outcome, and I trust in His goodness. I pray that all is done unto me according to His Will. If this is not in His plan for me, at least this will make it clear.
St. Joseph the Worker, St. Therese of the Child Jesus, Our Lady Undoer of Knots, and St. Joseph Cupertino, pray for us!

Happy Feast Day Saint Faustina Kowalska!⠀
"I want to write down a dream that I had about Saint Therese of the Child Jesus. I was still a novice at the time and was going through some difficulties which I did not know how to overcome. I started a novena to this Saint, because before entering the convent I had had a great devotion to her.
On the fifth day of the novena, I dreamed of Saint Therese, but it was as if she were still living on earth. She hid from me the fact that she was a saint and began to comfort me, saying that I should not be worried about this matter, but should trust more in God.
She said, "I suffered greatly, too," but I did not quite believe her and said, "It seems to me that you have not suffered at all." But Saint Therese answered me in a convincing manner that she had suffered very much indeed and said to me, "Sister, know that in three days the difficulty will come to a happy conclusion." When I was not very willing to believe her, she revealed to me that she was a saint.
At that moment, a great joy filled my soul, and I said to her, "You are a saint?"⠀ "Yes," she answered, "I am a saint. Trust that this matter will be resolved in three days" ⠀
And I said, "Dear sweet Thérèse, tell me, shall I go to heaven?" And she answered, "Yes, you will go to heaven, Sister."⠀ "And will I be a saint?" To which she replied, "Yes, you will be a saint." ⠀
"But, little Therese, shall I be a saint as you are, raised to the altar?"⠀
And she answered, "Yes, you will be a saint just as I am, but you must trust in the Lord Jesus." I then asked her if my mother and father would go to heaven, will [unfinished sentence] And she replied that they would. I further asked, "And will my brothers and sisters go to heaven?" She told me to pray hard for them, but gave me no definite answer. I understood that they were in need of much prayer."⠀
Saint Thérèse and Saint Faustina, pray for us!

Happy Feast Day Saint Therese of Lisieux Doctor of the Church 1873-1897 Feast Day: October 1 (New), October 3 (Trad) Patronage: Missions
Saint Therese of Lisieux or Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face was a French Discalced Carmelite nun, popularly known as The Little Flower. She was a highly influential model of sanctity for others because of the "simplicity and practicality of her approach to the spiritual life." She entered Carmel at the early age of 15 and died of tuberculosis at the age of 24. Together with St. Francis of Assisi she is one of the most popular saints in the history of the Church. Pope Pius X called her "the greatest saint of modern times."  {website}

And may God lavish such sufferings upon you as to glorify you above all other martyrs!
___
JOKE-OGRAPHY: This cartoon is based directly on a passage from "Story of a Soul", St. Thérèse's autobiography.  In this part, she quotes some letters that her mother wrote to her sister, Pauline, regarding Thérèse as a toddler.  The text in this cartoon is practically word-for-word what the letters said in the translation I listened to.  That's right: St. Thérèse of Lisieux, doctor and saint of the Holy Catholic Church, wished her parents were dead... though in the nicest way possible, of course.  If you don't think this is funny, then I lovingly wish that you go to heaven too, for it is clear that misery such as yours cannot be quelled by earthly delights.

What's in a name?
With the feast of St. Therese still fresh in my mind, my thoughts turned to her religious name: Sr. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. She asked that the title "Holy Face" be added to her religious name when she received the habit of Carmel. A few weeks before her death she said that her devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus had been inspired by the words of the prophet Isaiah: "There is no beauty in him, nor comeliness: and we have seen him, and there was no sightliness, that we should be desirous of him: Despised and the most abject of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with infirmity: and his look was as it were hidden and despised, whereupon we esteemed him not."
Behind the downcast eyes of Jesus, Therese saw the beauty of his soul; His swollen and bloodstained Face revealed His love. Writing her sister Celine she said:
"Jesus burns with love for us. Contemplate His adorable Face; behold His eyes which have lost their luster and are downcast . . .Contemplate His wounds! Look at the Face of Jesus! There you will recognize how much He loves us. . . . The King of kings humbled Himself to such a degree that His Face was hidden and He could no longer be recognized. I too desire to hide my face; I desire that only my Well-Beloved should see it, that He alone should be able to number my tears, so that He may rest His head at least in my heart and feel that in it He is known and understood."
"I understand better than ever what true glory is. He whose kingdom is not of this world shows me that there is only one kind of royalty that we should envy and desire: our royalty should consist of a willingness to be forgotten, to be considered as nothing . . . "
It was the Holy Face of Jesus that sustained her and gave her courage during times of darkness and aridity. Writing to Mother Agnes she captures it rather poetically: "Having entered the underground passage where there is neither heat nor cold nor sunshine, she walks, following a light half veiled, a light shed by the downcast eyes of the Face of her Bridegroom."

Rose Novena for Saint Therese
O Little Therese of the Child Jesus, please pick for me a rose
from the heavenly gardens and send it to me as a message of love.
O Little Flower of Jesus, ask God to grant the favors
I now place with confidence in your hands . .
(mention in silence here)
St. Therese, help me to always believe as you did in
God’s great love for me, so that I might imitate your “Little Way” each day.
Amen
