today's stargate thought is how much i LOVE that everyone in the pegasus galaxy uses the stargate.
like all through SG-1, 90% of the cultures we meet either have no idea what the stargate is or believe it's reserved for godly use only. basically no one but us uses it to explore. for the first few seasons, it took so much math to calculate the stellar drift that all the supercomputers in the SGC could only spit out a few addresses a month. even the super-advanced aschen thought it only went like ten places!
so it was such a genius choice to make stargate travel so common in pegasus that no one even remarks on it. yes, demons pour out of it sometimes and try to eat you, but the rest of the time it's like hopping on the light rail. people use it to go shopping. teyla has personal friends on fifteen planets. the first twelve-year-old john sheppard meets knows more valid gate addresses off the top of his head than SG-1 knew after like four months of gate travel and that will always always delight me.

I was listening to The “There's no place like Terra” podcast, to the commentary about the Stargate SG1 episode “Abyss”, the one where Jack is tortured by Ba'al and Ascended!Daniel trys to help him to escape by ascension. And it got me thinking.  Daniel is so adamant to not break the rules of the Ascendeds and I don't think it's just because it's proibite or because he’s scared of what the Ascendends could do to him.  He says “I'm not more qualified to play God than the Goul'ds are” (or something like that) and I think that the prime reason to why he refuses to help is because he's terrified by himself. He's terrified that if he breaks the rules and start to use all the power that he has for his own porpouses, he will become dangerous, because that's what Sha're's kid shows him in a dream during the episode “Absolute Power”. More than the Goul'd knowledge, the intere porpouse of that episode was to show what absolute power can do to a person, even a good person like Daniel. And Daniel saw what could happen and I think that could be a big reason why he's so esitant to use the power that he has. Because if he thought that the Ascendeds were simple wrong to choose to not intervene, he would have not give it a shit about the rules and he would have tried to do something. Instead he accept them, probably because he thinks that he needs those rules to keep himself in check, so that he never become that person in that nightmare.

I don't think we talk enough about how Stargate's wraith aka space vampires had one of the most outside the box vampire powers to ever grace TV. Like kudos to whoever said "hey fuck it we're gonna take one of the most one dimensional villain races we've ever made which can very accurately be described as space vampires and just completely blow that idea out of the water with a single scene showing that they have miles more depth than you could ever guess".
I mean come on why am I not seeing more vampire fanfic where the vamp can give life in the same manner that they can take it?! It's such a groundbreaking idea in a trope that short of this the most recent big change of pace was glitter.
That single scene where it looks like Todd just killed John but then he turns around and gives him back more years than he took? Mwah chefs kiss. Possibly the most efficient story telling I've seen.
Anyway I support queer agenda that episode suggested and am eternally devastated that Todd didn't become a Teal'c level character but with extra gay because telepathy.

It’s once again time to have insane thoughts about John Sheppard when I’m supposed to be going to sleep! Thinking about how maybe John decided to go on a mission to another galaxy with no contact with his family so he could live for himself and not with their expectations above his head. How maybe the reason he didn’t send a message to his family in ‘Letters from Pegasus’ is because he knew his father would find a way to judge him for his choices. And how on Atlantis he found a group of people he’s comfortable being himself around and who he’d do anything for.

The number of times characters have to be brainwashed on Stargate to make a good point or even a point from a different point of view...

this is something i have been thinking about basically since i got back into fandom and it feels especially relevant right now with some of the posts i've seen floating around
something that's very common to hear in fandom is "there's no ______ explanation for this" (fill in the blank with straight, normal, platonic, non-sexual, etc) and i get it, we're all guilty of it, i do it all the time, i think it's part of the fun of fandom is having a space to go insane about something and that's fine!
but i think it's also really really important to remember that there is literally endless ways to interpret something because no two human beings are the same, and the same thing can mean different things to different people
let's use me as an example. in my last relationship with my ex, we would regularly tell each other that we loved each other and wanted to spend our lives together and in that context, it was a very romantic sentiment. however, in my current relationship, we tell each other constantly that we love each other and we want to spend our lives together and there's not a single ounce of romanticism in either of us, because neither of us want or express romance to each other. most of my friends are convinced we're boyfriend/girlfriend, because to them our relationship WOULD be dating, but that doesn't mean we are
the same can be said about fandom. you can take a scene that is VERY romance heavy and one person might genuinely see that as a sexual expression, and someone else might genuinely see it as a platonic expression, and someone else might genuinely see it as a hateful expression, and i think it's really really important to remember that all of these takes are valid.
there's no one right or wrong way to interact with fandom (unless you're deliberately being harmful and hateful towards the characters and the community at large but that's a different topic of conversation) and i think people get really hung up on their takes and headcanons and forget that there's always going to be endless ways of interpreting fiction and that other interpretations are just as valid.
and this isn't to say you can't go insane about your blorbos or ships and you can't say they're obviously in love or whatever, because that's half the fun of fandom!! i just really wish people would realize that, no, there are actually multiple ways to view that scene or relationship and that's entirely valid

where's that cop show scene where the one guy was like "if I run at the police chief he will catch me no matter what watch this" and the police chief was like "no no I've got a cup of coffee!!" and drops the cup of coffee to catch the guy
because that's Vala and Teal'c right there
