righteous kill (2008) is a movie starring al pacino and robert de niro, which might fool you into believing that it must be good. it is not. it's very bad in a very boring way, and you shouldn't waste your time watching it, but you should watch this clip of academy award winning actor al pacino delivering the weirdest out of nowhere homophobic bullying line imaginable that hinges on the idea that everyone knows starsky and hutch are gay but then also explains the joke so you know that he's calling these guys gay. gay hawks. he he he he he.

ROUND 1 POLLS [HERE]
PROPAGANDA BELOW
Jesper Fahey/Wylan Van Eck:
They have really great banter in the first book where they start arguing and slowly shift to flirting.
David Starsky/Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson:
I used to watch Starsky and Hutch with my Dad on Sundays when I was a kid and there's no way those two are straight, have you looked at them?

One thing that's recently occurred to me - and I wonder if you or any of the other followers of the blog have noticed this or if it's just me or if I'm completely off base - is that sorts of 'Ship AUs' (i.e. take the ship and put them - and usually other characters - in a total AU, like 'Coffee Shop AU' or 'Superhero AU' or 'Election AU' whatever), while not unknown in pre-Ao3 fandoms, seem to be a lot more common and prevalent, as a percentage in fandoms where the source canon is younger than ao3, or rather, younger than when Ao3 started to attract more wider attention from fandom? Like, older fandoms had their share of High School AUs, but apart from those, I can't think of such total changed universe/context AUs being super prevalent pre-Ao3's popularization - and even on ao3 today, those older fandoms still don't seem to have as many AUs like that as the newer ones do.
Is this something anyone else has observed, or maybe it's just a function of what fandoms I've been in? Or just me drawing assumptions - I haven't run the numbers after all.
--
Offhand, I think it's a function of which fandoms you're in. I have noticed that some fandoms are just more or less prone to AUs.
I recall being fond of all the J2 AUs. RPF fandoms of yore had the same tendency of current ones for using the cast basically as faceclaims for original writing.
For tv series and such... I wasn't really looking for this type of AU, so I don't remember a lot, but the popular but relatively rare SF AU has always been a thing. One of my favorite Starsky & Hutch fics is Pigs in Space.
--
I guess... if there is a pattern (and there might not be), it could be that fandoms with tons of newer writers and people participating just to participate have more 'make it easier to write' AUs like shoving ancient wherever-istan characters into an American coffee shop.
If you go back to the heyday of zines, there was more gatekeeping of what fic saw the light of day at all, and I do think there was a bit more of a divide between Writers™ and people who weren't vs. now when anybody might want to sign up for a fest even if they don't count writing as a primary hobby.
(That said, writing for zines was a good way to get free zines, so it's not like the motivation to participate was ever absent.)
--
Another possibility is that on AO3 specifically, the oldschool fandom content is people importing one biased slice of their greatest hits from back in the day. Meanwhile, the recent fandoms are what much larger groups of people have organically posted.

When I first started watching Miami Vice - over six months ago now - it was with Starsky and Hutch in mind. See, I'm a huge fan of Starsky and Hutch, and so I thought, "Miami Vice, a show about a pair of cops in the 80's? It's basically 80's Starsky and Hutch, right? That's right up my alley!"
So here's the thing: I was totally wrong about it being 80's S&H, for multiple reasons, but I was right that it was up my alley. Of course, I had no idea what I was dipping my toes into at the time, but that's exactly why I've written this post. Going into Miami Vice and watching it through the lens of S&H gave me some interesting insights, and I want to share one with y'all now.
Now on tvtropes.org there's a trope for when one character of a pair is more passionate or hot-headed, and the other character is calmer and cool-headed. The trope is flexible, and is referred to as Red Oni and Blue Oni. The trope can be more nuanced than that (or less) but that's the general idea.
It's usually pretty easy to tell which is which, and if you're struggling to tell them apart, then the trope probably doesn't apply.
For example: in Starsky and Hutch, Starsky is Red (easily excited and usually full of energy - also not as book-smart as his partner, and less likely to stop and think things through)
Tumblr media
and Hutch is Blue (more reclusive, book-smart, overthinks things).
Tumblr media
In Miami Vice, Sonny is Red (very inclined to react emotionally, and based on a lot of his habits is pretty impulsive)
Tumblr media
and Rico is Blue (also impulsive, but more often with forethought)
Tumblr media
Now here's where it gets interesting - at least to me. When I saw that Sonny was Red, my mind grouped him together with Starsky automatically. Same with Rico and Hutch. I thought I understood the characters.
Boy was I wrong.
Right at the beginning of MV, it really feels like the show wants me to believe that Sonny is a good ol', live 'n let live boy. It wants me to think that Rico is some kind of high-strung city slicker with a short fuse. I was totally fooled, too. That's not dissimilar to the vibe of S&H's relationship, and so I wasn't thinking all that much about it.
So for a little bit I really did think that Sonny was laid back and that Tubbs was pretty uptight, and wow, that is not true at freaking all. Yo, Tubbs is chill af (unless you’ve messed with someone he loves/his car), and Sonny is … so high-strung. Dude, I think he gives Hutch a run for his money.
And that’s the thing. When I first watched it, I was like Sonny is like the Starsky, and Tubbs is like the Hutch of the duo. Nope. Veerrry nope. Tubbs is the blue half of his duo - for sure - but he is definitely the Starsky. Just like Sonny is the red boi, hands down, but he is definitely the Hutch.
Sonny, like Hutch, feels too much, and they both struggle to bounce back from those feelings. They struggle to move on/move forward, and they tend to wallow in their emotions. You can see the way that their circumstances and mistakes weigh them down, and that even though they keep getting up to fight, they do so with less and less enthusiasm each time.
Starsky and Tubbs – on the other hand – are both street-raised New Yorkers that tend to be optimists. They look on the bright side of things, more willing to find silver-linings and more willing to move forward/move on. They still obviously care, but they are just ... I guess they're literally just more emotionally healthy?
Anyway, I realize that this is long, and now that I'm reaching my conclusion, it sounds sort of lame, but I found this so interesting, since I had to change the categorization in my head. I was only putting them on a scale of Red to Blue, and completely neglected what was essentially the y axis in my little mental graph: which I guess was optimism vs pessimism?
So Sonny and Rico are on the opposite extremes. Sonny is a moody red boi, and Rico is a cool blue boi. Meanwhile Starsky and Hutch are in the middle, Starsky being a cool red boi and Hutch being a moody blue boi.
This sounds really underwhelming now, but I'd love to hear anyone else's thoughts on this. Do you guys think that the y axis should be optimism vs pessimism? Are there any other things that stood out to you?

What stands out as the Whump Of All Time? Only you can decide!
While you're welcome to vote for your favorite, your mutual's favorite, or on vibes alone, we encourage you to check out the propaganda and links below the cut - it's a great way to discover new content.
Our inbox is open for propaganda until the poll closes!
Starsky and Hutch:
(fanvid)
"Hutch gets kidnapped and injected with heroin, then escapes and has to go through withdrawal"
Bad Habits:
(link)
"Jesus this whole fic is just one big whump, but the part I've picked takes the cake. Geoffrey McCullum, a new vampire, is being "taught" by his maker. The "lesson" is his maker is carving his name into his flesh over and over. It's deeply unsettling, Geoffrey suffers so much and there's so much goretastic blood you just want to hug and save the man."

Happy New Year!!
In The Fix when Hutch was kidnapped he tried to convince the kidnappers that they Kidnapped Starsky. Hutch arrived at his apartment and started stripping, for this to work that’d just have to be something Starsky does.
We see (most obviously) in Starsky vs Hutch that Starsky does just break into Hutch’s house and just do whatever he wants and that Hutch just doesn’t really care.
We also see that this insistence that he is Starsky and not Hutch does work sometimes in another episode (in season 2 or 3 I think) where a thief hides her winnings in one of their homes.
Basically what I’m saying is Starsky just breaks into Hutch’s apartment sometimes for various reasons and that’s 100% cannon.

Happy New years again. This is the closest you’re getting to a new years post from this blog :)

some combination of @actingcamplibrarian's advent calendar fic (hidden in plain sight) and @redgoldblue's recent due south watch has got me thinking about starsky and hutch's hutch canonically not carrying the key to his own apartment but hiding it on top of the doorframe vs. due south's rayk in mountie on the bounty naming the whole bundle of keys he's carrying, telling fraser that the ones he's holding up are, in order, the keys to his old car, to his apartment, to his old apartment, to his locker, and "don't know. ... don't know", meaning that at any time he has at least six keys on him of which four are either obsolete or entirely a mystery, and that's while they were looking for a seventh key (to ray's handcuffs). i don't have a point here except i guess. the blond part of a buddy cop duo. he'll either carry zero keys (bad) or ALL the keys (also unfortunate).

I have tried to include every woman that either of them have canonically gone on a date with, had significant romantic feelings for, or hooked up with - some had to be left out due to technicalities (sorry Lisa), lack of character (Dandruff), or lack of first-person information (Lady Blue).

MASH OR Starsky/Hutch :3
ty! I got another ask for Mash so I'll do Starsky and Hutch here.
The first character I first fell in love with:
Prooobably Starsky. He's just so loveable!
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
Huggy! Not that I didn't expect to like him, but I had the cultural osmosis impression of him as an overly stereotyped pimp, whereas his actual depiction was a lot more three dimensional and endearing than I expected.
The character everyone else loves that I don’t:
Hmmm I don't know if there's an answer to this lol
The character I love that everyone else hates:
Vanessa and Kira in Starsky vs Hutch, I dig these shitty women lol, and not just in a 'well everyone bashes them so I'm gonna love them out of spite way' but in a 'I like characters who throw a wrench into things and it's interesting to look at the story from their pov and consider their motivations' way.
The character I used to love but don’t any longer:
I suppose this could apply to all of them lol because I haven't really been enthusiastic about S+H in a fandom way in a decade, but I still have residual love for them all.
The character I would totally smooch: Literally any of the love interests lbr here.
The character I’d want to be like:
Realistically, none of them. They're all cops or snitches lol. Though just taking personality traits into consideration, I guess it'd be nice to be more goofy and fun like Starsky.
The character I’d slap:
Hutch has his slappable moments. Partners for one.
A pairing that I love:
Starsky/Hutch lol, there's no other reason to be into the show.
A pairing that I despise:
I've never seen another pairing in this fandom lol. I'd say anything but Starsky and Hutch, but actually I'd be very into one of them having a gay relationship before getting together with the other. Either of the guys with any of the women is the answer here, I guess.
