Pics from a 4+ mile hike through the Virgin Islands National Park along a few trails. Roughly half was uphill, canopied and steamy as I imagine a tropical rain forest might be. Let me just say that though I'm not a girly girl, I'm also not an Extreme tomboy as per this experience. LOL. I do not like webs, leaping lizards and the like. Further, this hike let me know just how far I have to go regarding cardiopulmonary endurance goals; my heart rate stayed in the 180s most of the way up the trail. I thought about turning back 3x and ultimately learned that though I'm not quite the country girl I used to be, I have the willpower/mental stamina of a warrior, child. I was not giving up. The rewards were the spectacular views of St. John from several overlook points and some generous breezes. The next lesson I learned as a newly minted 40-year-old woman is that going downhill is worse with respect to its effect on the joints. I'm proud to say I did not bonk or face plant as I thought possible given the terrain. The trail eventually runs into one of several beaches adjacent to a resort and I high stepped directly from the trail to a bathroom and then to Cruz Bay to the ferry. Honey, I knew I was absolutely sunburned after 2 hours in the elements and ready for a shower and a meal. St. John was beautiful and welcoming, but I was happy to bypass the tourist traps and mix it up with native people, shooting a little sh#t with the menfolk along the way. This has been a great experience already. Also, I did not hit them gym and that's because this hike burned 178 grams of fat and 1371 calories! My heart was racing so fast I could HEAR it in my throat.
