The Day I Met Patricia Field

Every December I attend Miami Art Basel. Being from Chicago, Art Basel gives me the perfect excuse to escape the cold for at least a weekend. Aside from galleries and exhibitions happening all around town, Wynwood is the neighborhood one must visit. As I was sipping on my jugofresh and taking pictures of the murals, my heart skipped a beat when I found Ms. Field’s gallery exhibition and pop up shop at The White Dot Gallery.

Patricia Field has been one of my fashion idols since I learnt the meaning of the words “costume designer” and “stylist”. You mean celebrities have no style of their own and there’s a genius behind every look we see on TV/Film and/or magazines? For those of you from another planet, Ms. Field is the genius behind the looks we still envy and follow from Sex and the City and she solidified her icon status after The Devil Wears Prada.

My hopes of shopping one day at her boutique located at 306 Bowery died when she closed it down in early 2016. After closing her store she transferred her general website to an art/fashion online gallery. Now materializing this idea, she transformed the space at The White Dot Gallery into a bazaar where art and fashion meet for a month.

Upon stepping inside the paintings on the wall pulled me in like a magnet. More specifically the Hillary Clinton portrait in psychedelic colors. It spoke to me on a deep level. Ms. Field curated everything on exhibition and enlisted nine artists (Scooter LaForge, Ben Copperwheat, Suzan Pitt, Jody MORLOCK, ThesePinkLips by Iris Bonner, StudMuffinNYC by Kyle Brincefield, SSIK Designs, Hushi Mortezaie, and Suzanne Mallouk) to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Making my way through the racks I just knew I had to buy something. I tried several of the leather jackets but they were all too big on me. I decided to try my luck with the denim jackets and voilà, a sequined Who Cares jacket by ThesePinkLips fit like a glove. I loved everything about it. It’s not like anything I’ve ever owned and loved the idea of it being upfront about sexuality which is sometimes still seen as a taboo.

Jody Morlock came over to see if I needed help as I was clearly struggling for some reason. I asked her what she thought of the jacket and she said it was her favorite and so I decided to buy it. And then the moment came. Jody walked me over to the counter for the girls to ring my purchase and went to the back to see if Iris was there to meet me. And suddenly behind those curtains came out the one and only, Patricia Field.

Due to my job, I’ve been in room with celebrities before and am not one who gets starstruck easily - or ever, really - but this time, it was different. I was shaking and couldn’t believe I was standing in front of the woman I’ve studied since my pre-adolescent years in hopes to shape/find my own unique style. As I saw her in front of me I knew I had to say something, at least a brief introduction. She was looking for something or someone at the moment so I knew I had to go in for the kill before she were to disappear. I walked a couple of steps over and said something along the lines of  “hiiii (in a really high-pitched tone, as if we were sorority sisters who hadn’t seen each other in a while), I just wanted to say I admire you so much and love you” (can’t believe I told her I loved her, I’m such a weirdo!) and then *drumroll* I hugged her. I should never be allowed to interact with my idols. She was surprised and hugged me back (I think) and said I was very sweet in her raspy iconic voice. I was borderline crying. Jody came back and told her I was buying the jacket. She told her to take a picture for Iris since she was not there at the moment. I hope those photos never see the light of day because I look next to hideous.

After Jody took my picture wearing the jacket, I paid and made my exit. As I was leaving Ms. Field had found her way outside to smoke a cigarette. I’d never ask for a selfie. I’m not that type of loser. Instead I decided to be even more of a creep and take a sneaky picture to capture the day I met Patricia Field.

So yes, that afternoon was iconic in more than one level. I wore the jacket to the Scope exhibit and figured the next occasion for it to thrive at its fullest would be at Coachella ’17. Needless to say it was my favorite outfit at the three-day festival.
