'Face' Circa 2005 I've started painting faces on stones lately, and I've had a couple people ask me about them. I think I'd actually like to tell their real story now. I clearly remember being five-years-old sitting in the floor of my grandmas living room drawing the essence of these faces over and over. My grandma used to call them my aliens. I used to get so upset when she'd say that, because, for me, they felt like much more. They actually felt like real people. I would draw them periodically throughout my life, mostly they would come to me when I was in need of comfort. I believe I used them as a mode of escape. I specifically remember times time when these faces came, almost like guardians when I needed them the most. These images steadily reappeared when I was twenty-three-years-old. My baby brother Tyler had just been killed in a car crash, he was only nineteen. I can't explain this type of pain, so I won't even try; all I know, is in that moment there is nothing but hollowness where life used to be. This is truly when my art started. The face you are looking at in this post, is the very first sketch I did after Tyler left this world. These faces were the only things that helped me get through his death. All of them had different expressions, and emotions attached to them. I sketched these faces for several years after Tyler's death, until I felt healed enough to do other types of artwork. Now the faces are back, luckily there is no tragedy, attached to them this time. However, I believe they have a story to tell. These guys are my characters, and seeing them again is like meeting up with old friends. Are they aliens? Who knows, maybe grandma was right all those years ago. However, I like to think of them as manifestations of my emotions, or maybe even my little helpers. Freckles Freckles was a very energetic boy who seemed to have the ability to make people laugh out loud and extremely frustrated at the same time. His parents were rarely around because of their job commitments, so he lived with his grandmother on her farm most of his adolescence. Because, Freckles lived outside of a small country town away from other children, his only friends growing up were the trees and animals, you could say he grew up quite wild. When he started going to the county school his teachers and classmates didn't know how to interact with this wild boy. Inner knowing.. I get so wrapped up in the chaos of my external reality that I start to literally feel off balance. I feel confused and somewhat powerless to what my logical mind tells me. Then suddenly I am somehow reminded of my internal voice, the voice that is all-knowing, soothing, and calming. I’m told to slow down, get connected to the core of my being, and just listen.
