Summary: After pining after him for months, you get the chance to see Crosshair one more time before he ships out with his squad to Kaller.

This one was inspired by That Old Song from the Slime Rancher soundtrack because it gives me tragic romance vibes and even though I always wanna give Crosshair a happy ending, I really felt inspired to explore the more tragic side of canon because we all know what happens to him by this point (and season 3's not even over lol Lord help us)

The sky turned purple as the sun on Anaxes began to set. The warm toned twilight would always bring a sense of foreboding with it, but you were used to it. The hangar on Anaxes was not a front line, but it was still a warzone, and war didn't discriminate. It took away, it destroyed, it forced goodbyes, but like the stars that were rising in the ever-darkening sky, there were always gleams of hope that traced finer, beautiful shapes if you knew how to look for them.

He was such a glimmer, at least to you.

You hadn't stepped a foot inside the base since the Havoc Marauder landed. Though repairs and refueling were insistently handled by the team's own engineer, you had the honor of being the only mechanic around whom Tech would even allow to set a finger on the hull of the modified Omicron-class attack shuttle. While he was off running diagnostics and the rest of the squad loaded up on rations, you were finishing up putting away the supplies you'd needed for a standard oil change. You caught the scent of the oil coming from your gloves, which you carefully removed to reveal your hands, the skin on them soft and surprisingly well taken care of despite your profession. At that moment, you could hear the subtle pacing behind you, and a gentle smile formed on your lips. You'd had so many encounters with them that, while short, had already allowed you to recognize how each of the defective clones walked - you'd gotten the chance to know such a detail from many clone battalions, but you didn't enjoy knowing any of them as much as you did for Clone Force 99.

The steps approaching you were light as a feather resulting in lifelong training for stealth, and long resulting in a tall silhouette. Carefully paced one after the other, you knew he was already smirking at the sight of you. It was simply who he was.

You turned around and your eyes landed on the silver hair and the deep brown eyes that would reflect sunlight so beautifully whenever a golden ray hit them just right - that was the only thing that made you yearn for sunshine in the middle of that twilight. Regardless, you couldn't help but grin at the man approaching you. Being in his presence was everything that occupied your thoughts when he was gone.

"Thought you'd be here," he said while chewing on a toothpick.

The giggle that left you was just a bit too obvious for your taste, but you muscled through it. "Aren't you smart."

"I hope you haven't been here all week," he teased. "I don't tell you when I'll be here in my letters for you to tie yourself to the hangar."

"It might surprise you to know I'm always exactly where I need to be," you smirked, your hands traveling to your hips. "I just happen to be needed here right now."

Crosshair, who was always so stern and so serious, let out a chuckle in front of you. The way others talked about him, even his brothers, you were already sure by then that you were one of the only people he ever did that around, and the low sound of his laughter and the way his chest fluttered when he did made you feel your knees giving out on you. Finally, Crosshair took a couple of calculated steps toward you, decreasing some of the distance between the two of you. He looked down at you, silent for a moment, so peaceful you could hear the wind blowing at your sides. Despite the cool breeze, all you could feel on your skin was heat.

"Have you heard the rumors?" You asked him.

Crosshair nodded, the seriousness returning to his face. "Yeah. War's ending soon."

Sarcasm flooded his previous remark, and you gave him a bittersweet smile. "You don't seem all that happy about it."

"It's not that," Crosshair replied. "I'm not in a position to assert or expect anything."

"Right," your mind went back to your initial pondering on the cruelties of war, but you decided to focus on the man in front of you. "Will you be headed to Coruscant?"

Crosshair shook his head. "We're needed on Kaller."

"Oh," you said. "I see. Kaller... snowy, full of clankers."

"My specialty," Crosshair purred.

You giggled. "So... maybe it's safer to say that I'll see you again soon?"

As you were talking to him, you inched closer to Crosshair. Your hands were down at your sides, but you couldn't help but notice how close his hands were to yours, and how easy it would be to reach out and touch his gloved fingers with your bare ones. What you hadn't realized up until that moment, even with all the letters and the hours you'd spent thinking about Crosshair, was how desperately you needed to hold him, and to be held by him.

But Crosshair sighed, hesitant. "Darling..."

"We haven't been sending each other letters for months now just because," you whispered. "Have we?"

A faint smile appeared on his thin lips. "No."

Your own smile, though soft, grew at him, and your eyes seemed to sparkle.

"Crosshair..." You sighed, the dreaminess finding its way into your voice.

He couldn't help but laugh again. "Well, damn. You really are smitten."

Flustered, you looked away, but Crosshair reached out to gently hold your chin and have you look up at him again. He took in the way you were looking at him, with sparkling eyes and an adorable smile, your cheeks warm and your silhouette glowing with hope, like a girl first entranced by puppy love. Your hand went up to perch itself over his wrist, but as you did, your romantic heart stilled itself when the thought of him leaving soon bled into your mind, forcing the smile to slowly disappear from you.

"What is it?" He asked.

You chuckled bashfully. "I just..."

You feared the effect of your words, you feared that it would put a pressure on him that he didn't need, one that no soldier deserved to be burdened with. But inside you, a flame burned, one that prompted you to simply speak now, to not hold back, to not reduce yourself and your feelings to letters and comms. Crosshair, the man of your dreams, finally stood before you, his hand on your skin. You would never forgive yourself if you wasted this opportunity now that you had it.

Because how in the world could you have known what happened next?

"I just don't want you to leave," you whispered. "I never do."

Crosshair gave a soft exhale as he rolled the toothpick to the opposite corner of his lips and spat it out to the side only to look at you again, his gaze turning gentle on you. His other hand traveled up to your face, and now he cupped your cheeks with a steady, soft grip.

"Would it help if I told you I don't want to leave you here either?" He asked.

You smiled softly. "It's nice to know that."

Your eyes met, and you were overtaken by the desire to collapse in his arms and become one with him. You valued each second you'd been gifted to look at his face; your gaze traced the tattoo over his right eye, memorizing the little textures where the ink seemed to falter - you'd never noticed it wasn't a solid line, it looked like it'd been drawn over the artisanal canvas of his skin. You basked in his warmth as your hands reached out to his waist, and you pulled yourself closer to him, and while you did, part of you wanted to curse and lash out at the fact that you hadn't done this sooner.

But you were there now, and that was enough to calm you. And if the war was ending, you wanted to cling to the hope that you'd be in the arms of your beloved again soon.

"Crosshair?" You asked.

With his gaze, he prompted you to continue.

"I..." you said. "I want to kiss you."

Crosshair didn't wait longer, and he slowly lowered himself to gently press his lips to yours. You felt as if every star in the sky above you would explode at that moment, and your arms slid up around Crosshair's shoulders while his slid around your waist. A kiss that started out softly didn't hesitate to become what you could only describe as romance itself, fully engulfing you both in one wavelength as your lips danced together, timeless in your own right. Softly, you moaned at his taste, and you vowed never to forget the sensation of his lips on yours, warm and intoxicating, like it would give you everything you'd ever need for the rest of your days.

You never wanted it to end, but the time came for Crosshair to set you down again. You hadn't even noticed when you'd started to stand on your toes, but when the soles of your feet were back on the ground, you looked up at him with hope, with love, and with the unspoken desire to scream "don't go" building up and eating you up inside.

With all those feelings in your gaze, looking at you nearly broke Crosshair's heart.

Your hands gently traveled to Crosshair's cheeks and you felt his stubble growing in beneath your fingertips. You gave a light chuckle and added that detail to the many you'd remember from that night, and finally, you smiled brightly at Crosshair.

"Let me know where you end up after Kaller," you said.

Crosshair smiled softly. "You know I will."

You knew it would be time for him to leave soon, so you resolved to be with him in the time you had left. You threw your arms around Crosshair and held him tighter than you'd ever held anyone. You didn't mind the armor under your soft body, all that mattered was you were holding him.

And fervently, during those last few moments, you prayed neither Kaller nor whatever came after it would take him away from you.

Recursive Event anon back again - all else I can really ask is if you have any preferences/hard limits when it comes to shipping/potentially nsfw content based on/in DBHC?

Ooh, no that's a really good question! Regarding NSFW content, I would prefer for people to stay away from any explicit nsfw content. This goes both for the event and any fancontent people suggest or submit to me here on tumblr. I know there's a blurry line in there when it comes to gore, since some of the comics deal with techno-gore and robot blood, so I would just use the comics (found under the #dbhc tag) as a guideline for that, and maybe not push too far past how explicit i've been when it comes to gore and violence.

Shipping is a little harder because i definitely have an idea of what the "end game ships" are in my brain for the au, but i also haven't been super transparent about details or timelines or any of that, so it really comes down how much the fancontent is based on the au's canon material. Ethubs is probably the ship i've been most transparent and clear about regarding them having a romantic end-game, whereas Ranchers, Grumbo, and Docsuma are all just roughly implied/hinted at there being more in the future.

This au is really just an android concept combined into the massive world that is hermitcraft, so it leaves a LOT of room for possibilities i haven't yet explored, but truthfully, dbhc to me has also become a specific story with specific characterizations, designs, and plot points. Anything else tends to bleed into "au of the au" territory (which isn't always my thing, but it's also not super avoidable since this au has really only been explored through very brief specific points in time).

Basically! If fancontent is going to be made for a big or public event, I think i would largely prefer if fancontent is centered around or inspired by Canon Content for the au: characters, moments, or information that has been revealed or explicitly talked about in dbhc art or ask posts. Ethubs has the shipping Go-Ahead, but docsuma, ranchers, and grumbo are a little harder to represent accurately since *i* haven't even really fully explored them/planned for them, so I would maybe stay away from more explicitly romantic content with those characters (though i would tend to say flustery or embarrassing moments is okay!). That's a very long-winded way to say that, gosh! But hopefully that all makes sense!

I just want to discuss how throughout the life series, Etho’s episodes 4, 5 and 6 are always just constant fricking chaos for absolutely no reason.

third life:

Episode 4: he launches multiple missiles at the crastle, stealing his redstone back each time and is then blamed for being apart of Grian’s triple kill

episode 5 +6 (well session 5 + 6) were in episode 5: he made the Dorito walls, then death my firing squad occurred, then he made an enderporter, launched a tnt cannon at the crastle as a distraction, (also joined dowarts officially during this), and also was part of pizza’s murder, then had his castle burned down for the first time, then got sniped by Scar for tryna steal stuff from the desert (cuz his enderporter broke), and then had the entire bit of being terrified of Cleo despite being the only red in the conversation

last life:

Episode 4: Was genuinely a menance the whole episode using invisibility pots to sneak around peoples bases, and also stole the brewing stand from Cleo’s body in full view of like 4 people

episode 5: had to deal with a red roommate, no tango and also being the boogeyman, and made an enemy of scar in the process

episode 6: whatever the stack kill carnage was, bdubs boogey betrayal, tango rage crystal which became Etho’s rage crystal where he threatened 3 reds, ultimately getting skizz killed after a failed tnt cannon

double life:

Episode 4: fishing rodding the warden, near death via attempted entrance of mineshaft, death by fishing rod, murder of Pearl, near death by witch, threatening of grian and scar, becoming successful hitmen killing the ranchers

episode 5: the red army, skulk sensor trap kill, THE SHIP BURNS EVERYTHING BURNS

episode 6: red army attempt 2, literally wanting Scott dead the entire episode, Etho and bdubs cannot be separated and everyone knows that and deals with it as the server splits in two, death by trapped portal

limited life:

episode 4: green hunting day, “thank you Joel you saved me so now I can kill you”, failed attempt at trapping Scott’s bed, ETHO IS WASHED UP CONVERSATION

episode 5: blowing up bread bridge and his children, awkward family supper

episode 6: dies multiple times (mainly to his son or his own stupidity) and generally doesn’t have a good day, bucket clutches multiple times, kills scar with a fishing rod

secret life

episode 4: fails listening comprehension with Martyn, aha meme with Jimmy and becomes like an uncle tryna fit in with the kids

episode 5: be nice to bdubs day, weeping angel task causing way too many problems, somehow getting involved with the tag task because of bdubs, pearl’s hot potato book and his inability to return it to her

episode 6: bringing a warden to the surface while everyone else goes about their day normally, get set on fire but Pearl for seemingly no reason, becomes friends with Jimmy who was feral to half the server, the wither and warden fight in the centre of the server, killing 2 reds and he succeeds his hard task

What about Rancher!Graves as a kid.

It's established that he's a blonde-haired and blue-eyed American with nothing but love for guns, cows, and his family.

What about this smug asshole as a kid. Middle school aged, maybe.

There's so much love in his life. Raised with chivalry from Pa, gentleness from Ma, certain sass and a "take no shit" attitude from Memaw and Joseph, and a damn good eye for detail from Pop-pop. The walls of the house are littered with framed photographs of the whole family, and there's more photo albums than you can count with two hands.

He's so excited for the school year to end. The school bus drops him off at the end of the dirt path to his family's ranch, and he barely waves goodbye to his friends before he's practically full sprinting towards the big wooden gate to the land.

So excited to finally spend time with the animals and his pa, helping to fix that rickety ol' door in the barn where they keep the cows because Ma keeps complaining about it. It was a little lonely now that his older brother Joseph had shipped off to the army, but he occupied himself. Better to keep busy than to dwell.

Phil certainly spoiled the cows- hosing them up, brushing their coats, even hand drying them when they're finished shaking themselves off.

"Philly, knock it off, will ya? They're gon' start expectin' that from all of us if y' keep it up." "I promise I'll take care o' all of 'em!" "Better keep it- I'm tellin' Ma you said so."

And he does. Even when Pa wakes him up at the ass crack of dawn- when sunlight is barely creeping in towards the horizon- he's suddenly not so tired when he remembers that he's got to feed his cows. Pa has to grab him by the scruff of his neck to keep him from running down the hall.

"Ma'll kill us if y' don't brush yer teeth, boy. She's gonna know that toothbrush o' yers is bone dry. Go on."

He's barely washed his face properly before he's hopping down the stairs, jamming his feet into his boots, grabbing a slice of bread and a hard boiled egg, and hauling himself out the backdoor.

Midday breeze tousles his hair as he rests against the trunk of the big ol' bald cypress out by the horse pen, thumbing through a copy of the latest Spider-Man issue and chewing through an apple as he takes a break from helpin' Ma with her garden. He turns his head when he hears her voice call from the house.

"Philly, it's time for lunch!"

And he scampers off, comic in hand as he tosses the apple core off to the side for whatever animal to find and finish up. Honeysuckle sweet tea, ham sandwiches, fruit. Peaches, from his grandmother's little grove. Makes the damned best filling for his mother's pies- best in the whole state, he'd reckon.

I'm baffled that people are hating on you for having an opinion on a fictional Minecraft block man aksbahf. Even as someone who does enjoy FH (mostly the fandom version of it honestly), it's bonkers to judge someone for NOT liking a ship? Or not enjoying a character's behavior? Or for interpreting on-screen interactions differently than they do??? Like jesus, the whole point of fandom is to enjoy it the way you want to. You're not hurting anyone by seeing a pairing as negative based on what you watched. Look at friggin' Desert Duo, half the fandom writes 'em as toxic and divorced, and the other says they're devoted and inseparable. Different stances and interpretations make for a mixed and flavorful fandom experience and a melting pot of awesome stories and art. Good lord, god forbid you like something different or dislike a specific part of a media that you love lol

Oh god if only it were like desert duo, if only... But lmao yeah right!! I'm sorry that Scott smajor damnthatsalongusername is a guy that exists in real life I really don't care. I just want to discuss what I see from the series! And the more I see people with similar opinions to mine talk, the more evident it becomes that those opinions used to be so minimal because of this kind of fandom treatment. And so my heart goes out to anyone who dares talk about said opinions even if it gets them accused of homophobia lol. I'm with you guys...

And the fact that you like FH... but you're on my blog and share this sentiment... Is that so hard... Is it so hard to be decently sensible about different opinions and interpretations...

Also I do like FH too haha, I don't think I can say I ship it but obviously it's really compelling to me, and I've said it before and I'll keep saying it that I very much enjoy a lot of fluffy FH art and I really like them in ESMP1 for example. But no, I said they were toxic in 3L so that means I hate them!!!! It's ridiculous how much of a black and white matter this is to so many people, I don't understand... And the thing is that I WANT to understand! As you said, it's cool and intriguing! Differing discussion only adds to any one subject matter. Soft FH people probably wouldn't change my mind but I'd love to understand their points if only those points weren't something along the lines of "shut up you're wrong" (obviously not everyone!! But it is what I keep seeing in the FH tag lol)

I've seen people proclaim Jimmy as the abusive one, or proclaim ranchers as toxic etc, and I don't see it but man does it intrigue me! It's absurd to me personally, but I'm not telling you to shut up - you can't just say that and not tell me more! I wanna know what people are thinking without shutting one another down...

I have literally been scrolling through the treebark tag since noon. Obviously with breaks for other stuff, but it never reset to the top, so I just kept coming back and continuing to read. In doing so I also spent forty minutes watching the improve demon roleplay they did because it was a clip they had a link to. I’m crying. Renchanting my beloved 😭

Honestly I kinda feel like I’m betraying desert duo, cause they’re my favorites and have been since I’ve been in the fandom, but now I feel like I might love treebark just a little more, and i don’t know how to feel TT

There really are the main five ships in the life series, at least that get a ton of coverage, the most popular ones. Renchanting/treebark, desert duo/scarian, flower husbands, ethubs, and ranchers. And those first three? They’re my babies. I love them to the end of the earth. I would kill for them. They were the OG ships of the life series! Later we got the other two, and some smaller ones, but to me those three will always be the life series main ships (and maybe ranchers, sorry ethubs), and I can’t handle how much I love them!

Very relatable tags about DL! I have some thoughts too that I wanna share but I’m not brave enough to say on main

I loved the concept of the game; the gimmick for sharing health with someone was very creative and was an incredible opportunity to pair up new players. We got rancher duo out of it!

However, I didn’t like the fact that 1) desert duo was paired again and 2) the cheating arc was a thing.

As someone who struggles with over attachment to certain characters and pairings, the story desert duo told with DL upset me a lot. I didn’t like the cheating arc and I didn’t like how upset Grian seemed to be paired with scar again. Logically I know they’re great friends and it’s all exaggeration for comedic purposes, but in the moment it feels too real to me and upsets me (personally!! This isn’t a slander on Grian at all- he’s wonderful; I just didn’t like the character he played in DL if that makes sense)

Now with FANON it’s- as you said, 100x worse. I feel like after double life, a lot of people started to portray desert duo as a one sided friendship / relationship where Grian is mean to Scar or whatever. Which upsets me a lot because of the whole attachment thing but also because it’s so inaccurate. Yes they had their angst thing, but Grian isn’t a mean person, and he’s certainly not intentionally malicious towards scar. Shipping aside, they’re very close friends and enjoy each other’s company. It hurts to see people portray them as toxic yknow?

Like you said, nothing against the ccs. It's a fun block game! I mostly had fun watching it and I'm sure they had fun playing!

I didn't mind desert duo being paired again but I did mind the way it made the duo super toxic in fanon. Canon wasn't really my thing in dl either but fanon was so much worse for me.

I don't care if people enjoy stuff where grian is the abuser or whatever, I just wish people didn't try to portray Grian as the one who was somehow the victim in this situation and also???? TAG YOUR ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS PROPERLY

I've stopped trusting desert duo/scarian fics after dl ESPECIALLY when most of them are grian centric because I never know if it's actually hurt/comfort OR if it's Grian being birderline abusive and Scar chasing after him, giving him comfort and forgiving him because he loves him no matter how many times grian hurts him.

Literally just tag the abusive and toxic shit properly ohh my godddddd
