Talking Heads - Take Me To The River

Talking Heads es una banda que escucho cuando me quiero poner de buen humor. O cuando ya estoy de buen humor y lo quiero alimentar para que dure más tiempo. 

La sola figura de David Byrne, cantante y fundador de la banda, me causa gracia. De hecho hasta me atrevería a decir que es un tipo gracioso, pero no el sentido de contar chistes, sino de que tiene gracia. Sus canciones pueden ser composiciones más o menos complejas y artísticas, pero a la vez súper naif. Take me to the river en particular me resulta tan pegadiza que no hay vez que no vea un río y la recuerde, y hasta empiece a cantarla en mi cabeza. 

Volviendo a Byrne, el tipo es súper prolífico. Además de los ocho discos con Talking Heads tiene una amplia carrera solista, ha colaborado con artistas de géneros muy diversos (quizás recuerden el tema que grabaron con our own La Portuaria), y en 2009 sacó un libro llamado “Diarios de bicicleta” donde cuenta sus aventuras en diferentes ciudades del mundo (incluyendo Buenos Aires) a bordo de su bici plegable, el cual me devoré en unos pocos días. 

Inclusive googleando para este texto me acabo de enterar que a fin de marzo publicó un ensayo sobre el Covid-19 titulado “El mundo está cambiando, nosotros también". Por mi parte espero llegar a los 67 años con la mitad de su energía, y seguir tarareando Take me to the river la próxima vez que vea un río en vivo y en directo.

PD: El río de la foto es el que corre por el lateral del sendero al Cerro Fitz Roy, en El Chaltén, provincia de Santa Cruz, Argentina. 

Sobre el proceso creativo

En esta composición fui muy literal con el título de la canción: usé la técnica de doble exposición digital (que imita a la analógica que se lograba exponiendo dos veces en el mismo fotograma del rollo) para combinar el rostro de una chica con un río, que como conté antes es una foto que tomé en mis vacaciones de este año en el sur de Argentina.

Una vez lista la imagen la coloqué sobre un fondo con textura y el texto de costado, pero luego pensé que quería darle otra vuelta de tuerca y aplicar el diseño sobre algo del mundo real. Ahí fue que pensé en este flat lay al estilo showroom de Palermo que dice cosas como “hola reina, el top Budapest viene en talle único, precio por DM”. Lo armé sobre mi cama con elementos que llevaría a pasar un día al río y me dediqué a editar la foto sobre una remera lisa a modo de estampa, usando algunos truquitos para que parezca real. That’s all.

Votive - An ACWU Project, part of the Thames Festival 2018. Fifteen clay votives made by members of ACWU were exhibited at Southwark Cathedral then thrown in the River Thames.

London Lungs Air pollution in London is responsible for thousands of early deaths each year. These lungs are a votive offered for clean air. Made of unfiltered clay dug from below the River Thames. When fired, gases released from impurities distorted and darkened them. A reminder of the slow but serious damage caused to our health by the invisible particulates we breathe everyday.

An unfired replica was returned to the river with the hope that radical steps will be taken for clean air to return to our bright city.
