Upconverting near‐infrared light detection in lead halide perovskite with core–shell lanthanide nanoparticles

Under the JST Strategic Basic Research Program PRESTO, Associate Professor Ayumi Ishii of Teikyo University of Science with her team members has developed a new near-infrared light sensor by using a material that converts weak near-infrared light to visible light.

Near-infrared light is used in a wide range of applications on a daily basis, such as in infrared cameras (night vision cameras), infrared communication (wireless communication), optical fiber communication, remote control, and biometric authentication. The detection of weak light in the near-infrared region and improvement of sensitivity are indispensable for the advancement in optical communication technology, medical diagnosis, environmental monitoring, and other fields.

Compound semiconductors (e.g., InGaAs) having an optimal absorption band of 900–1700 nm, are used to detect light in the near-infrared region. However, these systems are expensive because of their complicated manufacturing process that involves the use of rare metals and is limited by noise interference. Moreover, such semiconductors do not exhibit visible light detection accuracy comparable to that achieved using silicon (Si) and other compounds.

Hey Kuu, do you happen to have heard about anyone named... Info-chan?

I do not wish to gossip, or spread silly rumours, but I would say Info-chan is closer to an urban legend. The concept of her is popular outside of Akademi, and I've seen Kaobook posts about her from foreign countries. The story most popularly shared is that after the incidents of 1989, the school was closed. New students came in after copy-cat Ryoba killers emerged in Harajuku and the media's eyes were off Akademi, one of them being Info-chan. Some say her real name is Mao Ito, Mikko Kusha, Teikyo Shajoho, Scarlett Akaimono, or some mix of the four. She walks in to Akademi, 10 pm, the day before school opens back up. She is covered in blood, and sometimes she has a weapon. She talks to the headmaster, who fears her so much, she's exempt from classes, and is allowed to sit in the empty Newspaper clubroom. To this day, she is attempting to hack Saikou Corp servers, and in some variants of the story, aiding real murders. A small bit of inside info... yes, there is a girl who sits inside the empty Newspaper clubroom. An easy explanation for this could be that it's a member of staff, or that it's an alternative class. But, it could very well be this "Info-chan" that everyone is so excited to talk about. You decide if this is true or not.

The Cyborg Torso has spawned off into two products - "Cyborg Torso" which is a home for floating heads, and "Cyborg Bust Option Part." Today we are going to talk about the latter. The Cyborg Bust is like other option busts - a stand-alone product used to swap out the default bust. The difference between the Cyborg Torso version is the arm sockets - the Option Bust version has larger shoulder sockets to accommodate human arms, while the Cyborg Torso version has much smaller sockets to accommodate the cyborg shoulder stumps. The Cyborg Bust is also the only option part where its OK to go out in public without bewb coverings ;-) The bust has ports modeled onto the surface, which you need to cut with a craft knife if you want to thread through charging cables for your Steam Deck or wot not. The photos show the port on the bust cut open and a USB-C cable threaded through. You can have your Smartie sit on your desk and charge your cell phone - they may ask for something in return for the energy though. For those of you who are bold enough, you can paint the bust and perhaps weather the panel lines too. Reasons not to buy -The bottom of the bust is a little on the large side, meaning that it won't hug the human torso as much as human bewbs - there will be a gap depending on how you pose your Smart Doll. -Some folks may feel the shoulders look odd as the shoulder sockets are not as large as the ones on the human busts. -The back of the bust has battle damage as you can see from the photos. -If you have a few Smart Dolls and bought only one Cyborg Bust, your girls may start to fight over who gets the cybernetic augmentation upgrade. -If you want to cut away the flash of the ports, you will need a high level of ninja skill and a craft knife. If you can cut away the flash to make it look like a machine cut it, you and I should have a chat ;-) -To charge your devices, you will need a cable and adapter which are not included. Taking good care of your teeth may be good for your brain

“Tooth loss and gum disease, which is inflammation of the tissue around the teeth that can cause shrinkage of the gums and loosening of the teeth, are very common, so evaluating a potential link with dementia is incredibly important,” said study author Satoshi Yamaguchi, PhD, DDS, of Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. “Our study found that these conditions may play a role in the health of the brain area that controls thinking and memory, giving people another reason to take better care of their teeth.” The study involved 172 people with an average age of 67 who did not have memory problems at the beginning of the study. Participants had dental exams and took memory tests at the beginning of the study. They also had brain scans to measure volume of the hippocampus at the beginning of the study and again four years later. For each participant, researchers counted the number of teeth and checked for gum disease by looking at periodontal probing depth, a measurement of the gum tissue. Healthy readings are from one to three millimeters. Mild gum disease involves probing depths of three or four millimeters in several areas, while severe gum disease involves probing depths of five or six millimeters in several areas as well as more bone loss and can cause teeth to become loose and eventually fall out. Researchers found that the number of teeth and amount of gum disease was linked to changes in the left hippocampus of the brain. For people with mild gum disease having fewer teeth was associated with a faster rate of brain shrinkage in the left hippocampus. However, for people with severe gum disease having more teeth was associated with a faster rate of brain shrinkage in the same area of the brain. After adjusting for age, researchers found that for people with mild gum disease, the increase in the rate of brain shrinkage due to one less tooth was equivalent to nearly one year of brain aging. Conversely, for people with severe gum disease the increase in brain shrinkage due to one more tooth was equivalent to 1.3 years of brain aging. “These results highlight the importance of preserving the health of the teeth and not just retaining the teeth,” Yamaguchi said. “The findings suggest that retaining teeth with severe gum disease is associated with brain atrophy. Controlling the progression of gum disease through regular dental visits is crucial, and teeth with severe gum disease may need to be extracted and replaced with appropriate prosthetic devices.” Yamaguchi said future studies are needed with larger groups of people. Another limitation of the study is that it was conducted in one region of Japan, so the results may not be generalizable to other locations. The COVID-19 pandemic has been going on for over a year. Key words: Kawasaki Disease, pollen exposure, cancers, influenza, COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, mutant, Wuhan, host and parasite, Parkinson disease, pollen avoidance, Takayasu disease, pollen-induced diseases(PID) Introduction In addition, it is expected that SARS-CoV-2 mutants will emerge simultaneously in many countries in the future when a patient host who has been compromised after pollen exposure in spring becomes infected with SARS-CoV-2 by chance. The authors hypothesize that the host who has been compromised after a large amount of pollen exposure responded to the coronavirus, which happened to be a slightly different parasite from the conventional one, with an abnormal response similar to the carcinogenesis process, and that the virus made many mistakes in the replication process, resulting in the virulent and highly infectious SARS-CoV-2. This report closes up the three-way relationship between pollen exposure and the number of influenza patients as well as KD patients, and further points out the possible involvement of pollen exposure in the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak. The author has already reported the phenomenon that the onset of KD which is delayed induced by pollen exposure is suppressed during influenza epidemics, and at the same time, the number of KD and influenza patients parallelly moved. We reported on these topics in our previous report in a predictive manner. When I looked into the pollen dispersal situation in Wuhan, the city where SARS-CoV-2 originated, I found that Chinese research reports up to 1989 stated that the number of pollens dispersed in Wuhan was significantly higher than in other Chinese cities. Having studied for many years the involvement of pollen sensitivity in the background of the development of many intractable diseases, the author has recently come to assume that these viral infections would also be related to pollen exposure in the host population. The four severe viral infections in the 21st century consist of SARS (2002~2003), pandemic 2009 H1N1, MERS (2012~), and COVID-19 (2019~) due to SARS-COV-2 infection. Next, in analyzing the correlation between pollen counts and the number of newly diagnosed cases of various specific intractable diseases, the author has proposed that 40 designated intractable diseases, as well as 24 types of cancer and malignant tumors, may be PIDs. In 2018, the author showed in an epidemiological analysis that Takayasu disease, a designated intractable vasculitis syndrome is also a PID. If you watch Japanese TV variety shows or dramas, you may have seen two big kanji plastered on the screen together with company logos just before the commercials. The kanji combo is "Teikyo" [提供], meaning "offering" and refers to the companies that paid to sponsor the TV show. When the Teikyo screen is displayed, b-roll plays in the background, and sometimes, the kanji for Teikyo superimposes over the eyes of a human or anime character - when this happens, folks usually take a photo and tweet about it because it looks silly - it's basically a thing in Japan as you can see from some of these Google image results - to see more, search for "提供目" I wanted to share this vitally important aspect of Japanese culture through a product - thus, the Teikyo glasses were born. While the average Jane and John Doe won't quite get it, you and a Japanese person would - now that you know what it means ;-) Made in Sabae Japan, the Teikyo glasses use the same temple as our previous Smart Doll glasses, which are designed to slip beneath the wig cap above the ear. You can wear them on top of the head or with the temples inserted into the glasses slots on our baseball caps. These Teikyo glasses will be a fitting addition for a cyberpunk aesthetic - especially because cyberpunk movies and games have so many quirky kanji ;-) Reasons Not To Buy -Costing more than human eyewear, the Teikyo glasses can only be worn over a single human eye - and you would have to stab your eyelids with the temples, which is not advisable. -As you handle the glasses with your greasy hands after an In-N-Out Burger, marks will start to appear on the surface. -The titanium will patina over time and develop dark marks on the surface - there may be some on the surface out of the box, as you can see from some of the product photos. -The Teikyo glasses will not improve the eyesight of a Smart Doll. Speaking of which, it suddenly dawned on me why this world has folks with bad eyesight (like me) - it's because when you take your glasses off, the simulation can run in low resolution to save energy.
