so i had some friends round a couple weeks ago and we ended up watching the g1 transformers cartoon and they both gained an obsession with Grapple. Now whenever I see Grapple I have like this uncontrollable reaction of anger and amusement. Is Grapple even that popular? I’m happy my friends are into transformers now but holy shit, Im going to put them down.

Thinking about IDW Optimus again and the fandom's aversion to even acknowledging he exists bc he's a cop or whatever and like. Most of the time people literally just replace him in fic with some white bread knockoff archivist/librarian, not even bothering to keep in IDW OP's personality (which just bolsters my theory that the problem isn't him being a cop the problem is that he's too multifaceted but I digress).
And it's annoying because you could totally write IDW Optimus as not a cop while still keeping his canon personality. You just have to realize that the reason IDW OP became a cop in the first place is because his formative experiences when he was young shaped him to basically have two priorities: 1. To help people and 2. To do it by being on the ground actively doing something about the bad things happening to people.
IDW OP would not be a fucking librarian or archivist because even though those are noble pursuits that can help people and change the world, and Optimus is educated/smart enough for the profession, he wouldn't be satisfied just teaching people or spreading information about activism or social-historical studies or whatever. He's a mech of action: he needs to be doing things right now, in front of him, to people he sees/interacts with in his own eyes, improving society with concrete actions rather than indirect action or abstract inspiration.
So basically the alternate job ideas I can think of for IDW Optimus are something like being a firefighter (or any first responder really) or even whatever the equivalent would be to international charity organizations, those ones that send volunteers across the world to do stuff like build housing/infrastructure or distribute food or whatnot. I mean I can't imagine that the equivalents to these things would be exactly the same in IDW Cybertron, so you'd have to get a little creative with it, but these are just some ideas of jobs that would fit IDW Optimus' personality while still filling the niche of "not a cop" for people who are just that opposed to it.
Though I think the revulsion against coptimus is annoying in general tbh because IDW is already a continuity that rejects the idea of easily defined good/evil people or groups. It feels like people really want Optimus to be a good person in a very sanitized and academically approved way, so he has to be nice and squeaky clean but also like, a perfect leftist who knows theory and holds the most progressive opinions on every single issue....
There is no room for the idea that good people join bad institutions, there's no room for the idea that the reason people think cops are good guys who help people is bc of the government propaganda everything is saturated with. Hell there's even later issues of the Optimus Prime series by John Barber where Optimus like, MULTIPLE FUCKING TIMES, is shown in flashbacks grappling with the fact that he as a cop/Zeta's regime that he works for might not actually be improving society like they say they are, and dealing with the fact that he feels more like a lesser evil compared to the Decepticons (perhaps not "lesser" at all).
It's like there's this idea in fandom of like, fictional media and opinions on media having to strictly adhere to progressive ideals at all times. So people just go "cops bad, this character is a cop, therefore they suck" without being willing to engage with the idea of like. IDW OP is born wanting to fight injustice and protect people -> a good way to protect people is to fight the people who are hurting them and committing crimes -> surely following the law is a reliable moral code to guide him in this -> becomes a cop because he's been indoctrinated into a society (much like our own) where he was told that the state/the law exist to protect the people and being a cop means you get to fight bad guys that hurt people. There's really so many interesting concepts there that could be (and CANONICALLY IS) explored about how good, well-intentioned people can be led to harmful actions simply because they have been fed the idea that the things they're doing are good/helpful/noble. Which is especially important for a character like Optimus, I think, who has a cultural icon status as The Irrefutable and Perfect Good, so it's really important actually to use IDW Optimus as an example of how even the most noble people you know have held problematic beliefs or done bad things at some point in their life. You know, because no one is born perfect and ideologically pure, and in fact society is constructed in exactly a manner to make people drink the kool-aid and believe that the systems designed to hurt them/others are just a normal, if flawed, society.
I mean the writing in IDW literally has Optimus deal directly and indirectly with the harm he's done as a cop and how people don't/didn't trust him because of that. I don't know what the fuck else this fandom wants if the source material literally saying "OP realizes that cops suck and he hurt people and earned their disdain by doing the things he did" doesn't stop them from going EW cop bastard sucks and is the worst Optimus. Like the narrative barely stops short of outright saying ACAB and Optimus himself would agree with this sentiment.
At that point, the collective fandom beef with IDW OP isn't because he's a cop and the narrative didn't do enough to condemn that. The problem is literally just that people don't read and don't care
TLDR: Consider the fact that good people can do bad things sometimes especially when living from birth in a corrupt society that thoroughly disguises its vices/oppressive structures as completely normal parts of existence
#squiggposting#idw op love#like honestly just admit that you havent actually read his parts of the story#or that in a continuity of moral grayness you insist OP must be the one person who's perfectly good#bc idk Optimus is supposed to be good and perfect bc nostalgia/marketing/mythology says he should be#also i feel like theres evidence here of a very juvenile mindset of like#to be good a person has to have all the right beliefs and say it in all the right ways#which is the mindset only extremely insular or inexperienced ppl could possibly have lmao#heartbreaking i know but IRL there are very few people who are and always have been progressive and perfect#there are ppl within progressive mvmts that have unaddressed harmful beliefs outside of their Chosen Issue#there are people who wouldnt ID as progressive at all but are still good ppl who act well towards others#like if youve actually interacted with ppl IRL you understand that if you reject everyone who isnt Perfectly Progressive#youll have few if any allies and possibly alienate ppl who would help/ARE HELPING#like idk do you know how many ppl i personally know who i think have some bigoted/problematic beliefs#but im still friends or collaborators w them bc i understand that theyre still good ppl learning and growing#like. learn to understand that 'goodness' doesnt always look like a walking leftist textbook please i'm begging#and in fact sometimes stories. esp adult and mature ones. will present you w problematic ppl#and you have to like. grapple with their flaws and explore the tension between intention and consequences#a bit of a philosophy tangent rather than anything TF related which is why i kept it to the tags

As a follow up to the previous post re: Jews by birth having ugly attitudes towards gerim-
Sometimes it's really hard to love ourselves - especially the parts of ourselves that others hate and have denigrated us for, mocked us, hurt us, or even killed others like us over.
I think the challenge to Jews by birth of gerim, especially Jews by birth who have been deeply wounded over their Jewishness, is that loving us means loving a group of people that chose you, specifically based on those wounded, vulnerable parts. We love you. We love you and the Jewish people enough to risk our lives by joining our fates to yours. We love you enough to leave behind everything we know culturally and religiously to be like you, to daven next to you, to join your family. And that can be really difficult to accept.
"Gerim are as hard for Israel as a scab" says the Gemara. Why? There are many interpretations of this statement, but mine is that we love the Jewish people for their Jewishness, which for many is still as tender as a scab. It can be hard to stomach someone choosing you and your family, especially if they come from outside, especially if they come from the very people who hurt you. And then we are here, in your space, excitedly embracing many of the very things that have gotten you mocked or excluded or hurt.
To fellow gerim, I would say that we need to be mindful of this and let our love include a lot of listening and grace towards those who are healing. To Jews by birth who may struggle with that sort of feeling, I would say that it's a perfectly natural instinct to have. Don't beat yourself up about it, but don't give into it, either. Let us be your salve, even if it hurts at first.

I figured out how Optimus is going to meet a lot of his future favorite Autobots it will be in a secret prison that the Senate runs. Even the ones who weren't there definitely had warrants.
Figuring out crimes is objectively very funny.
So Far (Includes one future Decepticon):
Ratchet has committed many heresies and will do it again.
Ironhide illegally bonded to Chromia.
Blaster's radio show got shut down for "seditious content".
Jazz definitely killed some of the Senate, may have helped kill Sentinel, has it out for Alpha Trion, and was there to kill Optimus. He's also been running illegal smuggling rings to get people across borders to safety for years.
Wheeljack was a Decepticon, which very quickly became illegal.
Sunstreaker (and Sideswipe) stole "intellectual property", except the "property" was a person. (That person was Red Alert.)
Red Alert was a hacktivist at the Cybertronian equivalent of 8 which is how they were found by the Senate and taken to be experimented on.
Prowl also technically committed treason but due to the loophole of him not legally being a person did not break the law as it would require recognition of personhood.
Hoist broke several intellectual property laws to treat patients and with Grapple smuggled people to safety and new identities.
Bumblebee was an Enemy of the State before Megatron.
Starscream was an Autobot before she commited a coup d'état and defected to the Decepticons.
Mirage was literally a serial killer.
Hound might be considered an accomplice.
Optimus was also charged for heresy.

The Decepticon House of Frights! (Part 3)
(I've given up promising to have this updated regularly. To all my fellow fanfic writers, you know how it is. Anyway, hope you all enjoy this update! I'm excited to finish this story...someday, haha.)
(Warnings: generic haunted house frights)
(Part 1, Part 2)
(AO3)
This was certainly a strange place to have a haunted house. Glancing around, Ironhide saw no one else in the vicinity, just a lot of vacant lots and rundown buildings. Not good for business, Ironhide thought, but then again, what did he know about Earth business? The painted, slightly smeared sign out front said this was the place, so that was good enough for him.
“Let’s go, gang,” He waved a servo to the rest of the Autobots. Not many had agreed to join this little venture, either claiming to be too busy or flat out disinterested. He and Spike practically had to beg those who did show up.
“Will this take overlong?” Grapple groused by Ironhide’s feet. Stubborn as usual, the boom truck still hadn’t transformed to bot mode.
“Got somewhere better to be?” Ironhide asked with no small amount of exasperation.
“If you must know,” Grapple sniffed, “I’m redesigning one of the Ark’s suites. It’ll be much more luxurious once I’m through.”
“Ooh, I call dibs!” Jazz declared with a grin.
“Certainly not! It’s for Hoist and I.”
“Grapple, we talked about this” Hoist interjected with some weariness, as if he’d had to remind Grapple of this multiple times, “We’re offering the suite to Prime, remember?”
If a truck could be said to roll its eyes, Grapple did just that, “Yes, yes, I remember…but the next suite is for us.”
Hoist patted his companion’s cab, “Of course. Now, come along. The sooner we’re through with this ‘haunting habitation,’ the sooner we can get back to work.”
“It’s called a ‘haunted house’, Hoist,” Spike reminded him, shaking his head, “We’ve been over this!”
Hoist merely chuckled while Grapple reluctantly transformed to root mode. Allowing Spike to lead the way, the Autobots filed into the haunted house.
The interior was dark, as was to be expected. Ironhide’s optics did their best to adjust to the dim light. Once they had, he noticed cobwebs on the walls- the same type he’d had trouble with a few days ago. Still sour from that experience, he steadfastly avoided brushing up against them. Behind him, he heard Grapple huff in irritation as a few strands caught on his hook. Hoist patiently helped him clear them away.
“So…what happens next?” Jazz asked into the silence. No sooner had he spoken than the door behind them slammed shut. Everyone jumped at the resounding bang- everyone except Ironhide, who laughed at everyone’s expense.
“Cool your circuits! We ain’t even started yet.”
So saying, he plunged ahead, everyone else hesitantly following after.
It was nearly pitch dark, with only slivers of light illuminating the way. Once his optics had adjusted to the gloom, Ironhide could make out rafters overhead, all strewn with fake cobwebs.
Scariest thing so far, he thought to himself.
Hearing noise ahead, he quickened his pace, everyone hastening to follow. Just as Jazz entered, something popped out of the gloom.
“Cripes!” Jazz nearly jumped into Hoist’s arms as a ghost dropped down from the ceiling, complete with a white shroud that concealed whoever was beneath. As Jazz began to relax, another ghost dropped down, this time startling Bumblebee.
“Ah!” Instinctively, the yellow Autobot looked to his human friend for reassurance, only to find there was no sign of him.
“Spike? Where’d you go?”
Ironhide turned around on hearing the trepidation in his friend’s voice and heaved a sigh.
“He can’t have got far. Calm down and try not to step on him.”
The last remark only scared Bumblebee more, and he took to staring at the floor- which promptly gave way beneath them.
“Woah, hey!”
Before Bumblebee could say more, the Autobots had spilled onto the floor at least one story below. The impact was jarring and left everyone in a groaning heap- everyone except Ironhide. Despite Grapple’s foot in his face, the oldest Autobot laughed heartily.
“That was good! Almost got me there. Almost.”
“Oh, my aching processor!” Hoist moaned, “Why didn’t Spike tell us this ‘horror home’ would be so rough?”
“Speaking of,” Grapple added, “Everyone make sure no one squished him.”
After a once over, all five bots confirmed Spike’s gory remains weren’t to be seen. There was no trace of Spike at all.
“Okay, I’m going back up to look for him,” Bumblebee said.
“You’re just trying to get out of the rest of the haunted house.”
“No!” Bumblebee snapped, folding his arms, “Me and Spike’ll join you once I’ve found him, okay?”
“Yeah, yeah,” Ironhide waved him away. The smaller Autobot took a moment to glare at his senior before leaping back up the way they fell.
“And then there were four,” Jazz declared. His words were punctuated by a chilling howl emanating somewhere ahead.
“What was that?!” Grapple immediately backed away, seeking Hoist’s reassuring presence. It wasn’t there.
Spinning around, Grapple called out into the gloom, “Hoist?”
No response.
The yellow boom truck frantically looked to the others, to where Hoist should have been, and back again, “Where did he go?! He was just here!”
Jazz edged a little closer to Ironhide while Grapple continued to panic, “Uh, okay. I’m getting mad bad vibes from this place. What say we skidaddle?”
“Aw, Hoist an’ Spike are prob’ly just trying to razz us,” Ironhide cupped his servos around his mouth and shouted into the darkness ahead, “It ain’t gonna work!”
“Oh, I’d say it’s working,” Grapple hurried closer to his companions, “I’d say it’s working quite well!”
Ironhide snorted, the noise almost like a car horn, “Never thought I’d see the day when real pink-blooded Autobots would turn robo-chicken!”
“Think what you like. I’m leaving!” So saying, Grapple looked to the hole in the floor they’d fallen through. To his surprise and horror, it had been covered.
“I daresay someone is trying to trap us!”
“Nonsense!” Ironhide exclaimed, “I’d know if this was a trap.”
“Whatever, man,” Jazz tried to keep his voice level, though something like radio static edged his words, “If this ain’t a trap, then lead the way to the end so we can get out.”
“Gladly!”
The howling from up ahead hadn’t stopped. As the three remaining Autobots drew nearer, it morphed into snarls. Jazz and Grapple froze in their tracks, optics straining to see anything in the darkness ahead. Ironhide continued forward at a brisk pace. Not wanting to be left behind, the other two hurried after.
Ironhide hadn’t made it another two steps before twin screams pierced his audio receptors. With a dramatic sigh, he slowly spun around to see what had spooked his friends now. What greeted him was a larger figure in a hooded cloak.
Ironhide crossed his arms, “Really, this is what spooked ya?”
Neither Grapple nor Jazz responded, so Ironhide craned to see around the figure.
“Where’d you two go?”
He got no reply other than the phantom advancing slowly toward him. As a so-called “real pink-blooded Autobot,” Ironhide held his ground.
“You don’t scare me, none. Now where’d my friends run off to?”
The hooded figure didn’t offer any answers. A bit fed up, Ironhide went to question him some more, when something like the sound of an animal’s claws scraping across the floor caught his attention. Ironhide had barely glanced down before something small and agile rammed into his legs. With a grunt, the truck pitched over onto his backside. Grimacing, he followed the sound of pawsteps, only catching a glint of glaring red eyes before the beast disappeared.
The hooded figure advanced more rapidly on seeing its prey downed. Ironhide glared up at it.
“Listen here, ya freaky phantom! I don’t know what game yer playin’, but I’ll have you know I ain’t the kinda bot you can-”
That was as far as he got before the figure suddenly lunged, enveloping Ironhide in its shroud. A shriek resounded throughout the haunted house just then, though Ironhide would deny it til the day he was offlined.

The outfit is really coming together now!
We're opting for airport-friendly costumes to dress for TFCon LA, which means I don't have to scratch build a helmet just yet. Baltimore's TFCon in November is less than an hour's drive from our house, so we can bring anything we're willing to carry that day.
I'm really pleased with these shades I found at Walmart. They're a pretty perfect match to Hoist's visor. And I think the duct tape does the trick.
All that's left for March 8th is some yellow knee pads, knitted green gloves that K is almost finished, and the jacket artwork.
I can't wait! Hope to meet and hang with you Transformers fans!

Literally every other origin story for the Joker in Batman media: He was a regular career criminal until a job interrupted by Batman had him fall into a vat of chemicals that turned him into the Joker, which may or may not have been Batman's fault.
The Joker movie: He was a professional clown and attempted comedian that society let down so much his mental illness won and turned him evil.
#where the fuck is my movie about the ACTUAL joker origin!?#the look into a life of a career criminal in gotham#providing a different perspective of the gotham underbelly from someone working in it#having this background anxiety about the recent appearance of a giant bat taking down criminal operations#the actual scene where Batman accidentally creates the Joker???? like C'MON people we were ROBBED#the Joker morphing from 'regular criminal joe' to 'the fucking joker'#like SEEING as this totally normal dude just becomes a full on fucking freak#maybe the transformation could be over the course of days to fully drive in this is what's fucking happening to this dude#so you see this man grappling with his own sense of self as he changes into something else#and maybe what he's turning into is just a more extreme version of what he already was#i mean he WAS a career criminal! so not a good guy!#so he falls into the vat of chemicals and changes into a worse version of himself#he already killed and maimed and abused people as a normal dude#but now he's worse#and we watch as he takes over the criminal empire he was once just a faceless goon in#and not for the money- for the fun of it#he was once a man acting this way out of greed but now he's doing so because it's so damn pleasurable#and what's more fun in all of this than his confrontations with Batman?#how tf producers really greenlit a joker movie without a batman is fucking bonkers to me#it's like how every square is a rectangle but not every rectangle is a square?#every Joker needs a Batman but not every Batman necessarily needs a joker#ok WAIT i did forget there is actually one other Joker origin that isn't the two listed#which is the Gotham tv shows Joker#which i do not actually remember the specifics of other than they ended that plot with the concept that 'the Joker'#is an identity that stretches beyond a single person and that ANYONE could become the joker in the future#which means that the regular joker origin could still happen in that universe just with a different joker than was in the show#okay have i said everything i needed to???#santino myself and i
