(** Fair warning, this is a bit of a long post due to pictures**) To start off, the way they first encounter each other is just so perfect ⸺ Max just flat out VULCAN NERVE PINCHES her while she's at her receptionist job. So something I've been rethinking a lot when it comes to Toriel, while she is a very wonderfully flawed character, is why she called Asgore's lack of action out in the end. Her words were DIRECTLY telling him that if he "truly wanted to free everyone, he would have gone to the surface and collected six more souls".

While Asgore has every reason to not want to go to the surface, what Toriel is dissatisfied with isn't that he didn't immediately kill everyone on the surface. I think the post pacifist ending was a bit rushed, so that's why it mostly went everyone's heads, but let's really think about this for a second.

Asgore is a dangerously selfless person, to the point that Papyrus himself indirectly calls him out on it and calls him a pushover. He is too nice and considerate to everyone to the point it borders on self-sabotage. And that's where his flaw comes in. He was lying to his people, essentially, promising freedom that he never intended on bringing them. While Asgore undeniably has his reasons for delaying the inevitable which I'll get into in another future meta post, you also can't deny that his flaw, by extension, has not just hurt himself, but his people by lying to them and giving them false hope. To the point he's literally willing to kill himself just to further delay things.

I believe THAT'S what Toriel was calling out all along. That he never had intentions to free his people in the end and couldn't just be honest with them while finding a different solution.

The neutral endings when Toriel is dethroned ONLY happens when you hurt or kill people in the underground, and monsters are more or less fairly happy to accept her proposal after you leave when you're on a post pacifist run/haven't killed anyone.

Toriel and Asgore are both parallels to in each other, and they are just as deeply flawed as each other. Neither one of them is "better" than the other, and it's time we put an end to that debate.

In the end, all they are is two broken people who separated due to severe and terrible trauma that neither of them could hope to fathom.

yes he would definitely have stretch marks and scars after a transformation like that!! i also like to torture myself by thinking about how, even with the accelerated healing, some of his most severe injuries just never really go away? like yes they heal but sometimes they don't heal quite right so he ends up with a lot of scars... i also hc that his knuckles are always scarred/have lots of callouses cause they can't ever catch a break 😥

he gets home after a particularly bad day w/ his uniform all torn up and you notice him limping and you're just... horrified and angry and upset 😞😞 but he'll never fully understand why it's such a big deal to you b/c he's had to live this way his whole life...

from getting into alley fights to jumping off planes w/o a chute; also living with chronic illness his whole life he's just come to understand pain as a part of living. super-human healing is actually rlly cruel if you think about it—just b/c he can push his body past normal limits doesn't mean he's immune to the pain :((( he still feels all of it

like when he jumped out of an elevator, fell down 20 stories, crashed through a glass ceiling AND STILL GOT UP

hello may i hear about the bruno is orange trans perspective thingy?

YES absolutely

okay so i did have a whole thing i posted on discord, but i won't just copy+paste that and instead i'll like. retype it. i'm so sorry this got so long

in my original analysis i was arguing that you can look at it from both a transmasc and a transfem perspective (and definitely more than that as well, i was just keeping things simple at the time), so i'll try to mention both of those perspectives here. (and also some of this might be me projecting a bit based on some of my own experiences, so keep that in mind--i am in no way trying to speak for Every Trans Person Ever)

so, short version: the song bruno is orange tells the story of an unnamed narrator and a character named bruno, and looking at it from a trans perspective, i'd argue you could say that some lyrics suggest that bruno and the narrator are the same person and also the narrator is trans. this makes the song about the turmoil of this character's identity and the reality of the transphobia and violence they face.

specific lyrics and further thoughts under the cut, 'cause uh content warning: this reading of the song involves a lot of transphobia (both internalized and not) and transphobic violence, because bruno is orange is a really sad song and doesn't really have a happy ending imo.

SO the main reason i latched onto this interpretation of the song is the bridge. most of the song is kind of quiet and sweet and sad, and then the bridge is LOUD and high-energy and you can HEAR the emotion and devastation in the singer's voice.

for context, this is the bridge of the song:

"Bruno What happened to your good sense? I broke down, That's man's good! I bet he works for the government!

Did you hear about that mother? Broke her daughter's legs in two, and said, 'It's too dangerous out there to walk, so I had to save you.'"

the bridge is one of the few times the name bruno is actually mentioned--most of the song revolves around the narrator putting an unnamed man (probably bruno) in a bad situation and ruining his reputation just by associating with him.

looking at this from a trans perspective, i argue that the narrator (the song is sung by a woman, for context) and bruno are the same person. and this is most evident, again, with the bridge. i know that doesn't make sense with most of the song b/c the rest of the song specifically references Two People, which is honestly why this reading is mainly based on a few key lyrics that resonate with me.

so looking at this from a transmasc angle, i take this as being about a trans man named bruno who has perhaps been living stealth or closeted, and he has been outed against his will by someone he trusted. his life as a good, upstanding man is completely uprooted and people immediately assume the worst of him.

the second part of the bridge makes this stronger, though, because TO ME it really reminds me of this attitude among many cis women (especially in radfem circles) that trans men are "misguided women" who need to be "saved," even though by "saving" them, they are actively causing more harm. (and uh not to trauma dump but. well. i've definitely had some of that thrown my way, even if i've personally never had to face physical violence because of it.)

like many trans men, from this perspective, bruno has his autonomy denied because others (especially the cis women around him--i don't think it's necessarily limited to just his mother) view him as being "confused" and unable to understand himself and make choices for himself. it's "too dangerous" for him, so he has to be "saved."

the implications that the narrator has ruined bruno's life also apply, because like... ok i don't know if i'm making this point clearly enough but bruno in this interpretation has a lot of internalized self-hatred and believes that he's at fault for the transphobia and violence he faces, a belief that is only reinforced by those around him.

now, here's a cut, because i do also want to mention the transfem perspective i can see in this song. and i want to specify here that i'm not transfem myself and am not trying to speak on behalf of any transfems--this is simply a reading of these lyrics.

anyway, from a transfem angle, the narrator and bruno are still the same person and the situation is still the same, only it's reversed. the narrator is a trans woman whose deadname was bruno, and she was living a peaceful life (though perhaps i think she would have been closeted and not told anyone except maybe some of her closest loved ones, and she would be, for lack of a better term, still be living "as a man") until it was uprooted and she was outed.

this angle also has a lot more internalized transphobia when i look at it, with the narrator being blamed by both herself and others for ruining "bruno," or at least the idea of who that person was. the continued insistence of bruno being a good man and the narrator destroying that pillar of the community... damn.

the lines about needing to "save" the narrator still apply here as well, except in the sense of how she has been torn down and forced to be "bruno" her whole life, and how it's destroyed her.

either way, looking at bruno is orange from a trans perspective, in my opinion, makes it an interesting take on the idea of identity and reconciling who you once were with who you are now, or who you are now with who you want to be.

and now i'm just going to share misc. lyrics that i think hit different if you look at them from this angle:

"Bruno, Did you know That the Greeks In the morning would eat oranges? They were firm believers In fruit curing fevers, And I agree. See, they believe, That an orange warms the stomach"

(i have a lot of thoughts about how these lines make me think of like. the two different "versions" of this character coming together in the aftermath of being outed, and the character reconciling their identity and trying to move forward, but this is already long)

"Bruno, what did you tell that man? He's a clever man, did you know? I bet he works for the government"

"I think it's real unfair, That you should put him there"

"Everyone will come, Everyone will yell, I'd thank just the same If you didn't tell My mother says that I will surely go to hell Please be a good man, Please say you won't tell"

anyway thank you for coming to my tedtalk! once again i do want to emphasize that i don't think this is in any way the "correct" reading of this song, it's just one way of looking at it that i wanted to explore.

just finished watching wednesday w my mom and i have scarcely watched something that made me go "great concept, bad execution" (affectionate, mostly) so hard

i defo enjoyed watching it a lot and i do love me some cheesey shit. so i loved a lot of it. but boy oh boy would it have benefitted from just straight up being less appealing

a lot of where it falls flat (imo) comes from trying way too hard to be Broadly enjoyable where it would have been more enjoyable if it had just leaned all the way into the niche target audience of loveable freaks that shows like the addams family are made for-- the source material is charming Because its niche and weird, saying "oh my god all these characters that are really just standard hs media archetypes in completely predictable social structures are definitely so weird and outcast from society" doesnt rly cut it for me
