the care with which the levitical authors describe sacrifice is not limited to a narrative eventuation; these descriptions become, in their own way, repetitions of the very rituals they holds precious. here then we have a text of sacrifice that, at the same time, does sacrifice. leviticus tells us the occasions, the materiality, how and unto whom blood is poured. it tells us how some sacrifices are sweet (עוֹלָה), some are non-carnist (מִנְחָה), how some are voluntary and some are not, some auto-purifying and some purify only at the expense of the making un-clean of the one with the knife (the matrixial red cow sacrifice is an example of this). leviticus is not about sacrifice, then, it is one: it is an entextualizing movement that cuts like a knife. we read blood, we become bloodied. it matters, after all, that leviticus offers no duration to sacrifice: does not, once, tell us how long the slaughter occurs. because it is still occurring, now, extending beyond referent, refusing the very telic-ness which nonetheless gives permission to it. there are no viewers to the levitical sacrificial system, then. only voyeurs—we have been invited in

February Fic Recs
On the ephemeral beauty of mortals
Tumblr media
Author: waitingfover Characters: Aegnor and Caranthir Rating: Teen Word Count: 1034
Sometimes his grief fueled shorts bursts of panic and desperation where he clawed at the door, frantically trying to find a way through. He never succeeded. It only left his spirit raw and aching. He knew he would be sitting there alone forever.  He was completely unprepared when his least favorite cousin drifted from the shadows to press against the other lintel of the threshold. Caranthir’s fëa was worn colorless and thin. Namo had ripped the remaining portion of the Oath away from his soul, leaving most of the edges frayed. He looked pitiful as he huddled opposite of Aegnor.  “Carnister?” Aegnor eventually called.
in which two cousins bond over their star crossed love for mortal women. Really lovely fic, sad and sweet with a happy ending. Love the interactions between these two.

ur such a weirdo who calls them carnists shes literally just a dairy farmer 😭
I agree, I'm a weirdo, but for quite different reasons than you think.
Carnism isn't a word I made up.
It's a term "coined by social psychologist and author Melanie Joy in 2001 and popularized by her book Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows (2009)" and is "defined as a prevailing ideology in which people support the use and consumption of animal products, especially meat." (Literally quoted from the first paragraph on Wikipedia, google is free and all that)
In other words, it's the opposite of veganism.
So I don't care if you sell shoes, do a desk job or even work in a vegan cafe. If you believe that eating meat and animal products is normal/necessary/natural/etc., then you are a carnist. It's not a slur or an offensive thing to say - it's just a description of an ideology.
And one I disagree with.

<<Pope came up with the perfect solution. In An Essay on Man he celebrated the Indians’ reverence for animals and the vegetarian harmony of the Golden Age when ‘Man walk’d with beast, joint tenant of the shade No murder cloath’d him, and no murder fed.’ 14 He gave voice to the Cheynian (and Senecan) idea of providential distempers avenging the victims of the dinner plate, and pointed out that by becoming a predator man had made himself a murderer of his own species too:
But just disease to luxury succeeds,
And ev’ry death its own avenger breeds;
The fury-passions from that blood began,
And turn’d on Man a fiercer savage, Man. 15
At first one might think that Pope yearned to undo the cycle of violence and return man to the peaceful ‘state of nature’. But, like Buffon, he argued that since people bred and fed domestic animals, it was only fair that they should eat them. Challenging meat-eating, he showed, was like trying to stem the flow of nature: ‘Say, will the falcon, stooping from above,/ Smit with her varying plumage, spare the dove?’ 16
Humans – as everyone knew – had the sympathetic hearts that falcons lacked; so how did Pope answer that? He did so by masterfully reversing a scene from Ovid into the myth of the Happy Lamb:
The lamb thy riot dooms to bleed to-day,
Had he thy reason, would he skip and play?
Pleased to the last, he crops the flowery food,
And licks the hand just raised to shed his blood. 17
It is easy to construe this passage as an indictment of the treachery of killing domestic animals – and vegetarians have often done so. But Pope coolly undercut the pathos by arguing that nature had benevolently kept the lamb devoid of foresight and therefore ignorant of its death until the fatal blow is struck. This was the ideal ‘painless death’. The lamb is alive one moment and dead the next: the transition from one state to the other occurs without even a twinge of suffering. Since sentimentalists only cared about causing pain, rather than valuing life per se , if they could be convinced that animals felt no pain they could eat guilt-free meat. The legacy remains today: ‘sympathetic’ objections to cruelty are fired against the grotesque practices of the animal industry (battery hens, farrowing crates, stall-reared veal), and people sit down to a Sunday lunch of ‘happy’ chickens/pigs/bullocks et cetera.>>

I have a strange question. Not sure if you are active in any fandoms but maybe your followers could answer: If you write(/read) fanfics, does it ever bother you that the characters are not vergan? Sure, scences with food could be changed, everything is up to descriptions anyway. There's no real world impact. But do you keep them carnists? How's everyone handling this? If the character in question is never explicitly shown/described as contributing to animal suffering one way or another (depending on the world in question), could I just go and label them vegan?
I am not directly involved in fandom and I don’t read fanfic, but I can already gather from the amount of it that I’ve been exposed on Tumblr to that changing details of a narrative or character according to your own headcanon is an established convention of the genre. If you want them to be vegan then make them vegan.
Once a book has been put out there by an author the story really doesn’t belong to them anymore anyway, it belongs to the reader and it is up to them to impress their own meanings and interpretations upon it. If people can ship other characters with someone they’ve never had a romantic relationship with in canon then you can certainly make them vegan.
Do any of my followers have anything to add?

Every leftist fb page I follow just turns into such a toxic fuckfest. If you MILDLY criticize their idols they act like you personally drove to their house and shat on their lawn in front of their children. If you say steve irwin, while an overall cool guy, could have used methods that respected the animals better and were less anthropocentric, you get accused of “gaslighting”. If you point out that peta isn’t actually respected in vegan circles and carnists are projecting onto the organization for their own narrative as if peta is the only voice of authority for vegans, they talk about how you live in a bubble and peta is actually the only thing worth talking about when it comes to veganism, or even more paradoxically get accused of defending peta (because what is reading comprehension). If you say “I am a survivor of gaslighting and I don’t appreciate being accused of this just because your ego is too wrapped up in the idol worship of someone you never even met” you get mocked and derided, they dig into your further and act like it’s funny. So much for these pages and their followings taking a stand against abuse and its apologism.

Weird stuff
Today I came across the scientific paper “Welfare implications of commercial kangaroo killing: Do the ends justify the means?”. It was written by dr Ben-Ami and a few other authors and was published in 2011. Ben-Ami etal (2011) argues for wether the Kangaroo cull in Australia is justified or not.
Ben-Ami etal (2011) cites a report by the NSW goverment named “2009 ANNUAL REPORT NEW SOUTH WALES COMMERCIAL KANGAROO HARVEST MANAGEMENT PLAN 2007-2011″ in order to show the estimated number for unindependent young culled.
Tumblr media
The graph above is supposed to show the population, quota and harvest of Kangaroos in Australia the years 2000 to 2009, however the numbers do not add up. For example, according to the graph the Eastern grey Kangaroo harvest in 2009 was around 806000 but the NSW report it cites instead shows that the harvest was around 214000 for Eastern grey Kangaroos.
Tumblr media
Did Ben-Ami lie about the actual numbers?

Alphabet Meme
@inevitably-johnlocked said that she’s tagging anyone who wants to do this and I’m bored so I decided to do it.
A - Age: 21 (for another month) B - Biggest fear: horror movies, the dark, anything that’s unknown or visually scary, also trucks and scary insects C - Current time: 9:45 PM Israel time (GMT +2, UST +2) D - Drink you last had: Water E - Every day starts with: Waking up? My schedule isn’t consistent. I have school three days a week and only two of them start in the morning. The rest of the week I don’t have anything to do. F - Favourite song: Just one? Okay, I’ll choose a random one. How about Let It Go, the Nick Pitera version. G - Ghost, are they real?: Maybe. There aren’t many in Israel but I think they do exist. H - Hometown: Meaning place of birth? Jerusalem. Current living place? Town near Jerusalem. All childhood homes? That’s eleven including this one. I’ve lived in northern Israel, Vermont, California, then back in Israel near Jerusalem. I - In love with: Captainsparklez. Wish I had a girlfriend, hope I’ll be in a romantic relationship soon. J - Jealous of: Everyone and everything K - Killed someone: Well I only turned vegan when I was 18, so... L - Last time you cried: A week ago in frustration at turning in a project late and still not knowing how to finish it and wanting to drop out of school.  M - Middle name: Don’t have one. N - Number of siblings: 1 O - One wish: These are difficult questions. I want to be an author.  P - Person you last called/texted: I sent a heart emoji to one of my friends who hasn’t talked to me in a while. Q- Question you’re always asked: More like sentence. ‘You don’t seem autistic’. I wonder why (sarcasm). R - Reason to smile: Still being alive and happy today? Also Jordan’s videos. S - Song I last sang: Listen by Beyonce  T - Time you woke up: 6:00 AM U - Underwear colour: Gray V - Vacation destination: Ireland, the Galapagos Islands, Venise, Vatican City, all the places where my far away friends live... Everywhere pretty much. Anywhere where there’s beautiful nature, art, architecture, and any way to get vegan food (which is actually not that difficult inspite of carnists thinking otherwise. And this with me not eating gluten either). W - Worst habit: Disassociation X - X-rays you’ve had: Just dental stuff cause monster teeth (aka adult teeth that grew over milk teeth so I had multiple sets of teeth. Took each milk tooth during puberty around three years to fall out and the last one I pulled out cause after four years I got tired of it.). Also I had an ultrasound cause my doctor thought I might have kidney problems. I’m fine though. Ultrasounds are weird. Also it’s cool to see your bladder cause they make you drink water beforehand and then it’s just a giant undulating black blob on the screen. Y - Your favourite food: Hummus, hummus, hummus, some more hummus with a bit of halva in between and also chocolate and sweet peppers and hummus. Z - Zodiac sign: Aries
Anyone who wants to do it is welcome, I don’t feel comfortable tagging people.

I wasn't tagged, I stole this meme. lol
Author name: You can call me Carnist, or Yume, or Derby, or Joy(my actual name lol). I don't really care. Hell, even Slytherclaw works.
Fandoms I write for: Mostly ATLA, I occasionally write for DBH, and pokemon cross-overs. lol
Where I post: My Tumblr, and I've started posting more commonly on my AO3
Most popular one shot: Ursa et Sol
Most popular multi-chapter story: Probably 'Zuko's Invisible Friend'. Seriously, only two chapters so far and that story has blown up! lol
Favorite Story you wrote: It's a series of one-shots, but CATLA. The kitty!Gaang are just too precious.
Story you were nervous to post: 'C A I N' I really enjoyed writing it, but I always worry that I'll post something and everyone will hate me. ;w;
How you choose your titles: I usually try to pick something that has some kind of meaning to the story. I'm a sucker for layered meaning and symbolism. lol
Do you Outline? Yep. Well, usually. If it's a one-shot that I have sudden inspiration for, probably not. But for multi-chap and planned one-shots, I outline.
How many of your stories are Complete: Most of the posted ones.
In progress: 'Zuko's Invisible Friend', and 'Thoughts of Reason, Thoughts of Treason'.
Coming soon: AU where Raava possesses Zuko, my "The Storm” AU, a one-shot of the ChaosAvatar!Zuko AU(and there's also a multichap in the works, but I haven't fully outlined that one yet so shhh)
Upcoming story your the most excited to write: It's a tie between the one where Raava possess Zuko, and the one where Vaatu possess Zuko(and then eventually becomes his dad)
Do you accept prompts?: Like, if you want my take on an ATLA AU idea, sure.
Tagging: Uhh, you if you want to do this. lol
