Shangri-La Frontier Episode 1: What Do You Play Games For?
Tumblr media
What happens when a gamer who only plays shitty games decides to pick up a so called god-tier game? Shangri-La Frontier is the answer to that and provides an insane opening episode for the concept. I'm just so excited to get 2 whole cours of this, and I really want to explain why.
Also, SiM's vocalist (MAH) on the OP with FZMZ? And Chico on the ending song? This series was made for me man.
First of all, C2C is an incredibly underrated studio considering the quality of the projects that they enjoy. This is one such project. Right from the start the quality is insane. 2D camera movement, detailed animation and character acting, the whole nine yards. Just look at this walking cycle! There's no 3D and their shoulders move!
Tumblr media
It's just crazy to see the detail they put into these pieces early on. Walking cycles are super neglected due to how "plain" they are, but there's just something incredible about seeing that effort put into it with stuff like these examples.
And then there's this (sort of misleading) litmus test. Does your anime have really good art for a random cut? Odds are the production's doing really well. And, well, there's this really good looking beetle shown early on in the episode.
Tumblr media
Anyways, to Shangri-La Frontier the game. The direction understands the assignment right away. This is a video game, we need to know it's a video game. So they show us it's a video game. First person perspective is our very first cut shown in the welcome screen and once we enter the world, setting the tone perfectly for what's to come.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But of course, a video game has more to it then just first person perspective, and of course C2C grasp that as well. Slow motion (which you'll see later), and more importantly camera movement are important in establishing that feel. The slow draw towards an endless expanse of world, the bird's eye view of a landmark or feature as the camera slowly rotates. It gets it, and it's able to create a living, breathing trailer for Shangri-La during the episode because of that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, there's the fact that it's a video game. There's talks of skills and abilities and levels and whatnot, but I think most understand that that's a "staple" and that C2C/Shangri-La handle it quite well.
Let's talk about the good stuff, let's talk about action. C2C nails it. They put incredible effort into video game-styled choreography, and it pays off in spades. The slow motion, the harsh camera angles to accentuate the fight, the camera rotation, the way that attacks linger in the air. It's incredible stuff that's augmented by insane animation and visual effects. Seriously, pay attention to the fight and you'll see that they did an impact frame for a crit. Not in the traditional sense, but that the impact frame was the crit. This sort of stuff just makes me so excited because of how well it's handled.
And then there's the worldbuilding. The OP comes into play as well of course, but the details are super great. The enemies Sunraku faces in the starting forest are (mostly) beginner enemies. A goblin with a stone axe and some sort of large pig seem to be the "typical", but there's more to it than that. The Vorpal bunny is a "rare" enemy which makes sense, but the pig enemy only appears as Sunraku ventures closer to the second town rather than the first.
There's considerable detail and effort placed in the creation and appearances of these creatures in the world. The Vorpal Bunny featuring a better crafted weapon than the others that most likely came from somewhere else. Don't forget - we saw a rabbit in the opening.
Tumblr media
It's just insanely cool stuff. The world is already shown to be more broad and deep than "it's a big video game world!". There's all sorts of little pieces like this peppered about, and it's just so damn good. Even the concept of Sunraku's "Wanderer" dropping him in a forest rather than the starter town. The detail to really sell this game as god-tier is so damn good.
But it's important to not forget, the god-tier part of the game is only one part of the puzzle. Sunraku here is famous for playing garbage games.
And it's a great way to offset the story and provide a fun angle, I'm serious. It allows them to add fun commentary and responses in regards to frustration from playing bad games, and at the same time provide a novel and excitable approach to a genuinely good game. The best of both worlds that sets the perfect stage for how they want to explore this story.
So, understandably so, I'm very excited about two cours of this and everybody else should be too. C2C is showing us they've got the potential to make the absolute most of Shangri-La Frontier and it's fun and surprisingly unique concept. Can't wait to see what they bring with the next episode!

wc: 5.1k
The clicking of the equipment and the shuffling of pages filled the otherwise quiet room as you waited on the crew. You wouldn’t say that you were nervous, but then you would be lying.
This would be your first interview for the latest season of Stranger Things, your first season on the show, and it was nerve wracking. You knew there was so much more to come, so you were glad your first time would be in a studio instead of somewhere that would be easier to mess up.
“You ready, y/n?” Asked Keera, who introduced herself to you as the conductor of the set. She would be asking the questions and telling you exactly what was needed of you.
“Yeah, I’m ready.” You nodded and smiled slightly at her. “Where am I supposed to look? At you or the camera?”
“Wherever is more comfortable to you, though we would prefer the camera.” She told you, and you knew she was telling you that it was alright to avoid the camera and look at her. You took a deep breath and looked at it anyway. Now was not the time to be afraid of a camera. You tried to remember what Joe always told you.
“It’s just a machine. No thoughts, feelings, or biases. It can’t hurt you.”
“How would you describe your relationship with Joe?”
Keera’s question wasn’t surprising, as this was an interview focusing on you and your co-star’s friendship, though it did give you pause.
“I would definitely say that we’re close.” You smiled as you recalled memories you had of times with Joe. “We got to hangout a lot these last few months, and he’s such a great friend."
“Would you say you learned from him as an actor?” Keera asked, scribbling things down on her clipboard as she spoke.
“Oh yeah, definitely.” You nodded before you remembered your media training. Always try to include the question in your answer. “I learned a lot from him, not only as an actor, but as a person. Joe is so incredibly kind and helpful.”
After you spoke, a moment of silence passed that had your palms sweating a little.
“Okay!” Keera cheered, breaking the silence maybe a bit too loudly. “That was great! Now we’re gonna bring Joe in and start with the good stuff.” She smiled at you before turning to leave the room. Joe walked in a few moments later and you felt yourself relax at the familiar face. Not that you hadn’t seen him since your arrival, he had picked you up this morning, but they needed to separate you for the first part of the interview.
“Hey.” He smiled as he approached you, opening his arms for a hug. “How was it?” You melted into him so easily. Too easily.
“Easy. Just like you said.” You reassured him, knowing why he was asking. You had confided in him during the ride over about your nerves and he promised that you would be amazing as always. His words, not yours.
“What’d I tell ya, huh?” He pulled away to stand next to you and face the camera. “What did you say about me?”
“I can’t tell you that.” You chuckled through your words.
“Oh, come on.” He groaned and lolled his head away from you.
You laughed and rolled your eyes. “I told them that you’re such an annoying coworker and I can barely stand you most days.”
“Funny, that’s exactly what I said.” He looked at you from the corner of his eyes as he held back his laughter. A moment later, you both burst into giggles.
“Alright guys, are we ready?” Keera handed Joe two clipboards with a small pile of flashcards and a sharpie on each.
“Definitely.” Joe answered as he passed you a clipboard. “What are we doing first?”
“This segment will be about giving your friend compliments.” Keera explained as she walked backwards out of the shot to continue facing you. “Maybe try to have three compliments each, for the sake of time of course. We’ll film you writing them first, then you’ll exchange compliments.”
With your sharpie uncapped, you turned to face Joe. “I feel like I’m gonna repeat what I just said.” You mumbled as you started writing on your flashcards.
“Oh, so you were being nice?” He raised his eyebrows, eyes still on his clipboard.
“Shut it, Keery.” Joe only giggled in response.
Once you were done, you unclipped the flashcards and handed the empty clipboard to Keera. Yet Joe was still scribbling away. “You got a lot to say about me, Joe?”
Joe smiled, yet he avoided eye contact. “I’m writing a novel over here.”
You felt the heat rise to your ears as you chuckled. “Aw shucks.” This tension was usual to you now. You didn’t know if he could feel it too. This unspoken electricity that you hoped the camera couldn’t pick up.
Just a machine. Just a machine. Just a machine.
“Here you go.” Joe handed Keera his clipboard and finally made eye contact with you. “Do you want me to go first?”
“Go ahead.” You nodded.
“y/n.” Joe paused and looked at you with a smile that you involuntarily returned, though more timidly. “I think that you are a passionate actress with the potential to be one of the greatest of our generation.”
“Aw, that’s so sweet.” You dragged out the vowels slightly as the compliment got to you. He just brushed you off with a wave of his hand. “Joe.” With a nod to clear your head, you looked at him. “You have a work ethic worthy of admiration and are an inspiration to all of us on set, especially to me.”
“That’s incredibly kind of you to say. But you’re not gonna one up me just yet.” He joked to diffuse the tension. “y/n. I think that you are the kindest, most genuine person I’ve ever met. You always put others before yourself, and it is a quality of yours that I adore.”
You brought a hand to your chest and pouted. “This is gonna make me cry.”
“No, come on.” Joe shook his head and put a hand on your shoulder briefly. “It’s your turn, go on.”
“Joe. Your talent never ceases to amaze me, both in film and music. Your acting is impeccable and your discography is nothing short of fantastical.”
“You running out of synonyms for good?” Joe laughed. “That’s really sweet of you to say, y/n. I didn’t even know you liked my music.”
“I love your music, I just didn’t wanna seem like a super fan when we first met.” You explained shly, trying your best to laugh it off. “Oh my god, Joe Keery! I could literally recite every word off your last album right now, wanna go run lines together?”
Joe burst out laughing at that. “That’s amazing. You’re gonna recite everything on the ride back now.”
“I would rather die, Joe.” You deadpanned before cracking a smile. “Come on, it’s your turn doofus.”
“Last one, are you ready?” He raised his brows at you.
You nodded and fixed your posture. “I'm ready.”
“y/n. You are a top notch baker. My personal favorite creation of yours has to be the blueberry lemon pound cake. I’m pretty sure the Duffer brothers will write a spin-off series just for you with how many baked goods you give them. Your muffins could make a grown man cry.” He shot a look at the camera. “Don’t ask me how I know that.”
“You guys did not think this through, my ego is through the roof right now.” You laughed to Keera. “Because you’ve been so sweet, I won’t tell them about the muffin incident.”
“Yeah, that can stay between us.” Joe laughed. “One last chance to one up me, l/n.”
“I don’t think I can, but I’ll try my best.”
“My muffin thing got me bonus points.” He winked at the camera.
“Joe. Your sense of humor is impeccable and has brought me to tears on multiple occasions. Without your memorable pranks, I don’t think I would have gotten through filming this season. You always make everyone feel at ease with your much beloved playfulness.” You looked up at Joe as you pocketed your flashcards and saw him looking at you intently, his eyes damn near sparkling with joy.
“That’s the- That’s what I hope to do. So thank you.” He blushed, rubbing his palms against each other.
You scrunched your nose and peered up at him. “To make me cry?”
“No, no!” Joe laughed. “You know what I mean, y/n.”
“You guys are so sweet.” Keera said, bringing the segment to a close. “Now we’re doing reflections. How did that make you feel? Any comments?”
“It was lovely.” Joe turned from you to the camera with you nodding along with him. “Yeah, I feel like rarely do you get to compliment someone face to face like that.”
“Yeah, like not in passing.” You elaborated on his point. “Even when you mean it, sometimes the weight of your words doesn’t really sink in. Sometimes the compliment needs its own moment.”
“Yeah yeah, well said.”
“Great thoughts all around.” Keera smiled encouragingly at the two of you. “On to the next segment. Eye contact. So we’ll have you face each other- yeah, just like that, and just try to maintain eye contact for four minutes.”
“Like a staring contest?” You asked, your head cocking to the side slightly.
“Well, not necessarily.” Keera shrugged. “But if that’s how you want to pass the time, you can go ahead. Four minutes is a lot. You guys can fill that time however you like.”
“Like work out minutes.” Joe commented and you gasped.
“Four minute plank.” You snorted, wide eyed.
“The horror.” Joe laughed along with you.
“Whenever you’re ready.” Keera said.
“Let’s do this.” You finally properly looked Joe in the eyes.
“Four minutes starting now.” Someone called out from behind the camera.
“You come here often?” Joe smiled at you, and you couldn’t help the giggle that bubbled out of you.
“All the time, dude. Why have I never seen you?” You tried to play along, though you cringed at your attempt. “Eye contact is way more intense than I remember it being.”
“Tell me about it!” Joe laughed. “I feel so vulnerable right now.”
Silence soon fell over you as you both tried to focus only on each other’s eyes. It was difficult keeping your gaze away from his freckles, his nose, his jawline, his lips…
Eyes. Stay on the eyes. Stay focused.
His eyes. Joe had such pretty eyes. You knew this of course, but now you had the time to truly delve into them. You always loved brown eyes, but Joe’s eyes felt so much warmer than most. The way his lashes framed them so perfectly. How they were ever so slightly down-turned.
“You’ve got such pretty eyes, Joe.” You felt yourself saying before you could hold yourself back. But maybe because of how vulnerable this whole interview was, you didn’t feel embarrassed.
“Why, thank you.” Joe blushed. “Your eyes are really pretty, too. Your pupils are like really big right now.”
“Yours are too!” You pointed out. “That’s crazy. Are we high?”
“Not that I know of.” He laughed. “Those smoothies we picked up on the way did taste funny, though.”
“They did, they did.” You agreed. “We didn’t put that in the special requests.”
Joe let out a chortle that had him almost breaking eye contact, and you beamed. Making Joe laugh always filled you with a sense of pride. You remembered the first time you made him laugh on set. When you realized that you could actually make friends at work. Your first day on set with him.
Stranger Things was your first large scale production, so you thought everyone was strictly professional. The first few scenes you filmed weren’t with your main scene partners, as they portrayed some backstory for your character as well as her preliminary interactions with the Upside Down. So you mostly filmed with the actors playing your parents and some of the other cast members the first two or so weeks on set.
Then came Family Video. Ellie, your character, would be Steve and Robin’s new co-worker. You had mumbled something about Steve collecting friends with each job and Joe had laughed and agreed. While the crew were setting up the lights and the makeup department kept zipping by to add more powder here and there, you and Joe got to know each other a bit. You had to keep yourself in check and not freak out. Not only were you a fan of Stranger Things, but you were also a fan of Joe.
You told him about this being your big break essentially, or hopefully, and he had congratulated you.
“I know you’re probably nervous, and trust me I was too when I first started, but everyone is so nice here. It’s probably really cliche to say, but we’re really like a family here. Everyone’s here to help.” He comforted you.
“Are my nerves that obvious?” You chuckled, rubbing your upper arm.
“A little.” Joe smiled warmly. “You keep looking at the camera like it’s gonna bite you.”
“I kinda feel like it might.”
He laughed at that. “Don’t think like that. It’s just a machine. No thoughts, feelings, or biases. It can’t hurt you.” He said. “It’s just here to capture your talent. If anything, it’s on your side.”
“Quiet on set!” Someone called out.
“You’re gonna do great.” Joe said as he walked away from you to stand behind the counter. “Just a machine.”
“Time’s up.” Keera announced.
“Now I don’t wanna look away.” Joe smiled and you felt your cheeks heat up once again. Was he just kidding? Was he flirting with you? Was it all for show? Maya would surely tell you otherwise, as she has on multiple prior occasions.
“You guys did great, we won’t have to do cuts or anything.”
“Wow, look at us go.” You smiled and reached out a fist to Joe for a fist bump, which he promptly returned.
“Reflection time. What do you have to say about that activity?”
“It was intense, that’s for sure.” Joe chuckled. “But it was nice, in a weird way. I feel connected to you now.”
“Yeah, like in a spiritual sense.” You agreed jokingly. “I was struggling on which eye to look at. You never really think of that with eye contact, ‘cause you can’t look at both simultaneously.”
“Yeah! I noticed in the beginning you kept switching between them. I stuck with your left eye in the end, I think.”
“This next exercise, also our last one of the day, is gonna be trust falls.”
Both you and Joe turned to each other once the words fell out of Keera’s mouth.
“No way!” Joe exclaimed. “We’ve done those before!”
“We did!” You smiled. “Though, I never caught you.”
“Yeah, I think Maya caught me.”
“Great! So we won’t have any hesitations.” Keera smiled. “We’d like you to do a couple each, maybe different distances or whatever. You guys are free to play around with it.”
“We got this in the bag.” You cheered. “We gotta do some really low ones, Joe. Those are the best.”
“Yeah, definitely.” He nodded. “Maya’s gonna be so pissed, she loves these.”
“Hah, that’s what she gets for doing the puppy interview.”
“You’re never letting that one go, huh?” Joe chuckled as he positioned himself a good distance away from you.
“Never ever.” You nodded. “Alright, me or you first?”
“Let’s start with you.” He said, looking between you and the floor, measuring with his eyes. “Is this a good distance for you?”
“Yeah, that’s good I think.” You nodded determinedly before turning to face away from Joe. With your arms crossed against your chest, you took a deep breath. “On three or after three?”
“After.” He answered. “One, two, three, go!”
The familiar roller coaster reminiscent drop in your stomach excited you as you fell backwards. You couldn’t revel it in much though, because Joe’s hands caught you at the waist moments later. That, in and of itself, sent the air rushing out of your lungs.
“Gotcha.” He whispered, much closer to your ear than you anticipated. “How was that?”
“Good.” You choked out. With a cough and a deep breath in, you tried to loosen yourself up as Joe lifted you back upright. “Yeah, it was good. Maybe we can go lower next?”
“Sure, let’s go for it.” He shrugged. “Whenever you’re ready.”
You situated yourself a bit farther than you did last time and nodded. “I’m ready.”
“One, two, three, go.”
The drop lasted longer this time, sending tingles up your spine. He caught you by your shoulders this time, gently lifting you upright.
“One more?”
“One more.”
With the last one out of the way, you felt like you could finally breathe. Joe’s hands on you felt scorching in a way they had never felt before. The vulnerability of the exercises made you feel like your feelings were out in the open for everyone to see. For Joe to see. And you very much prefered to keep your infatuation with your coworker under wraps, especially from said coworker.
“Your turn.”
“I won’t be too heavy for you, will I?” He asked, somewhat self consciously.
You waved a hand in his general direction dismissively. “You underestimate my strength, Keery.”
“Alright, She-Hulk, let’s do this. After three.”
“After three.” You nodded, stepping back. “One, two, three, go.”
You positioned your hands behind his shoulder blades as he fell and made contact once you felt was right, pushing him upright with a bit less effort than you expected.
“That was good!” Joe cheered.
“What did I tell you?” You smirked. “Another.”
Joe’s last two trust falls breezed by as you were stuck in your brain, anxiously going over the moments his hands were on you.
Joe was always kind to you, welcoming and attentive. But that’s how you saw him with everyone. Until Maya had something to say about it.
“You gonna run lines with me, or is that just a y/n privilege now?” She joked one day as she walked onto set. Your head snapped in her direction, eyebrows furrowed in confusion. What did that mean? Joe ran lines with everyone. Well, everyone he had one on one scenes with. That was mostly you, Maya, and Gaten.
Though, come to think of it, you never saw him doing that recently. He was almost always around the corner of wherever you were headed, and he always asked if you needed help. You were struggling with the scenes you had where Ellie was nervous around Steve. You wouldn’t tell Joe that it was because you were already nervous around him. Pretending to act nervous when you’re already nervous and actively trying to act like you’re not nervous is apparently extremely difficult.
“I- Uh- What?” Joe sputtered, cheeks turning red. Not that you saw, though Maya was sure to mention that when she retold the scene to you from her perspective. “What do you- What scenes do you wanna go over? I’m free in an hour, I think. Actually, I can push that back, I can be free right now.”
“I’m just kidding, Joe, jeez. Calm your tits, man.” Maya laughed, dropping onto her canvas folding chair sideways, legs over the armrest and arms over the back. “I can hang out with y/n. Right, y/n?” She raised her brows at you and gave you a look that said ‘that wasn’t a question’, so you quickly nodded.
Joe nodded and mumbled out a goodbye of sorts, which you thought was odd. The whole interaction was odd. Joe was nervous. Joe was never nervous.
“What was that?” You asked Maya, confident Joe was out of earshot now. Probably somewhere with the brothers, as he mentioned needing to talk to Matt or Ross to you beforehand.
Maya grinned at you. “That was proof.”
“Not this again.” You groaned, letting your head drop back. “Maya, you gotta let this go.”
“And you gotta understand that I never will.” She retorted. “Not until you get into each other’s pants!”
“Maya!” You almost shrieked, face feeling like it was on fire. “You can’t just say things like that!”
“Like what?” Natalia asked, having heard you shriek from a few feet over. You were filming the scene in the trailer today, where almost everyone was present, which made for fun set days. Usually. When your coworkers weren’t being nosy. “What are you guys talking about?”
“They’re talking about Joe and y/n crushing on each other.” Finn spoke up from behind you, alerting you to his presence.
“Jesus!” You jumped. He was sitting on a chair similar to Maya’s, as they were scattered everywhere, reading a comic book.
“Ohhh, that.” Natalia nodded, coming up to lean on Finn’s chair. The pair’s on-screen relationship was rocky at best, but they were basically siblings on set. “Did they figure it out yet?” She asked him.
“No, y/n’s still in denial that he likes her like that.” He muttered, flipping the page. Natalia only snickered.
“You talk about this with Finn?” You asked Natalia, eyes wide in something akin to betrayal.
“No,” she shrugged innocently, “he talks about it with me.”
“You guys are cute when you’re bumbling around each other.” He laughed, almost to himself.
“We do not bumble!”
“You totally do.” Maya scoffed.
Everyone went quiet as you all spotted Joe coming up to your general vicinity.
“Hey, I forgot… my water bottle.” His words dwindled down to a mumble as he saw everyone’s eyes on him. “Are you guys okay?”
“Peachy.” Maya smiled at him. Everyone’s eyes were still on him. Everyone except you. You were trying to look at anything but him.
“Alright.” Joe nodded and took a step back, water bottle now in hand. “Um, Ross is waiting for me. I’ll see you guys later.
“Did you see that?” Natalia whispered to Finn. “He couldn’t take his eyes off her.”
“When does he ever?” Finn scoffed.
“y/n?” Joe’s voice pulled you out of your flashback. You hummed in response. “Reflection time.”
“Oh! Yeah, sorry.” You furrowed your eyebrows as you pulled yourself back into the moment. “That was really fun! The whole thing, really. We're like, indestructible now.”
“Oh yeah, for sure.” Joe nodded, crossing his arms over his chest and in turn showing off his biceps. Not that you noticed. “Joe and y/n, duo extraordinaire.”
Keera made a motion with her hands for you to wrap up. “Definitely. Thank you for having us, Glamour.”
“Thank you, Glamour, for making us tied to each other indefinitely. Soul binding exercises, that’s what they should call these things.”
Once the cameras stopped rolling, Joe started chatting with Keera. You tried your best to join, but your mind was elsewhere. Joe threw his arm around your shoulders to keep you close, noticing your withdrawn behavior. You nodded and hummed along with them, but it felt like you were floating above the conversation. Like you were eavesdropping on yourself.
Joe’s concerned gaze dropped back to you once Keera was whisked away by the crew. He knew that you got like this sometimes, social battery all worn out. You were tucked into his side, wringing your fingers about. “Wanna head out, sweets.”
“Yeah, if that’s alright with you.” You nodded, eyes still on the ground. Your stomach swooped at the nickname. Sweets. He had to know what he was doing to you.
“Anything you want is alright with me.”
You quickly made it to Joe’s car, conveniently parked close to the entrance, and clicked in your seatbelt. After he started the ignition, Joe’s music started playing and you felt yourself melting into the seat, tension slowly leaving you. Maybe it was because his car smelled so much like him, or because he was right there with you, but Joe always made you feel so at ease.
“Which one’s your favorite?” Joe asked as he tinkered with the small touch screen radio, eyes flitting quickly between the screen and the road.
“Hm?” You hummed, confused.
“You said you knew the whole album, but which one is your favorite?” He smiled, turning to look at you for a moment. Your eyes caught the screen and saw that he had pulled up his album’s track list.
“Joe!” You groaned, bringing your hands up to cover your face. “I regret ever mentioning that.”
“No no, come on sweets.” He gently grabbed both your wrists and pulled your hands away to the center console.
“Mm, how about… Tentpole Shangrila.” You thought. “Wait no! Ring, that one’s a good one. Or no! Personal Lies is so fun too! You can’t make me choose, Joe.”
“You really know your stuff, huh?” Joe grinned at you, though you could tell it made him a bit shy. You being a fan of his work made his heart soar and his cheeks rosy. You reached over and decided to just put the whole album on shuffle. You still had one hand in his on the console between the two of you. It felt scalding. Gloriously burning you straight to your chest.
“I told you I did.”
The two of you stayed quiet for a moment as his music softly filled the space. BNBG. How fitting. Or at least, you hoped.
“Joe?” You broke the silence no more than a few minutes after it had started. He hummed in response, eyes still on the road, thumb stroking the back of your hand. With each swipe, you felt yourself ascend even higher. Towards what, you weren’t sure. Love? Was it too early for that word? Like? That somehow felt too juvenile. Maybe it was just Joe. “I kind of cheated.”
“Cheated?”
“In the game.” You elaborated. Your free hand went to your back pocket as you pulled out a paper. “I wrote a fourth one.”
His eyes caught on the flashcard in your hand. From the compliment exercise. He felt it as the heat slowly crept up to his ears. “For me?”
You nodded. “I was gonna- I was gonna read it back there, but it felt too personal. I mean it’s not, like, crazy or anything. I just realized I didn’t want it to be on the internet forever, you know? And you know how fans are, most of them already hate me. And Keera said for the sake of time and I-”
“Hey, that’s not true. They don’t hate you.” Joe frowned, squeezing your hand a bit to stop your tangent before it escalated. He turned the steering wheel towards the closest empty street in view, putting the car in park. “But it’s alright if you didn’t wanna say it back there. Would you- Can I read it?”
“No.” You shook your head. “I wanna say it. To you. I- I wanna say it to you.”
“The floor’s yours, sweets.” He nodded.
You untangled your fingers from his, albeit begrudgingly, and sat to face him. Your back was somewhat leaning on the car door and your left leg came up to rest on the seat.
“Joe.”
“Yeah?” He smiled at you.
“You have been the loveliest person to me on set. I’m not sure how I will ever be able to repay your kindness, your attentiveness, your care. This job has been my hardest yet in terms of my nerves, and never did you make it seem like it was a hindrance to you.” He reached towards you, placing a hand on your knee. “You have been so tender and generous with me, and I’ve been trying my hardest since meeting you to give you the same selflessness you’ve given me, but it never seems enough.”
“It’s enough.” Joe frowned at you, though he didn’t seem mad. He withdrew his hand from your knee only to bring it to your face. “Of course it’s enough. Everything you do for me is enough.”
“Really?”
“Really. You are everything you say about me and so, so much more.” You couldn’t tell who was leaning towards the other, but soon his forehead was a hair’s width away from yours. “y/n, you are amazing and I don’t know how you don’t see it. How you don’t see me admiring it. Admiring you. I mean, I’m just constantly staring at you like a creep. Half the footage the brothers got was just me looking at you when I wasn’t supposed to. All the cameras caught me, but you never did. Kept ruining all our scenes together.”
“You did say the camera was on my side.” You giggled, looking into his eyes.
“It is. But so am I.”
His words were like a sucker punch to the gut. He was always on your side. Since that first day you met. Always.
“Can I kiss you?”
“Please.” If you were with anybody else, perhaps you would have felt some shame at how quickly your answer came.
But this was Joe. Your Joe. And he didn’t waste a second. His lips felt warm on yours, smooth and soft. His hands found purchase on your cheeks, pulling you closer. He tilted to one side, moving you gently with his thumb on your chin to the other to deepen the kiss. You heard yourself moaning softly into him, though you couldn’t recall when the decision to do that came.
The center console felt sticky against your palms, the result of leather against skin, though you didn’t know where else to put your arms. Joe’s pinky finger stroking at your neck sent a signal to the one brain cell you had that wasn’t on fire. You quickly draped both arms against his shoulders, fingers softly grasping at the hair at the nape of his neck. Your heart was beating so loudly against your ears you were sure Joe could hear it.
Pulling away became a necessity after a certain point, but a necessity you detested. Resting against him, foreheads and noses touching, you filled your lungs with air that smelled like him. He gently nudged his nose against yours, an action so sweet it almost had you melting.
“Was that okay?” He asked softly, eyes gently looking into yours.
You nodded, though only enough to brush your noses together some more. “More than okay.”
“Good.” He hummed, closing his eyes and leaning more heavily into you. “I hope you don’t think that was a one time thing, ‘cause I don’t think I can ever get enough of you.”

Lmao I know Sunraku had to be PISSED to survive for 5 minutes just to get citzenship as a rabbit 😂. Truly a gamer anime as we can all relate to grinding out a hard quest only to get an ass reward. At least he got a new skill along with it..

Sakuga during the fight was amazing as you’d expect. Basically 10 mins of nonstop sakuga. Well done C2C.

I've been enjoying Shangri-La Frontier! To the point that I binged the entire manga! It's so refreshing to see a fantasy game series that focuses on the game aspect. One of my nitpicks for series like SAO is the world building and game mechanics don't *feel* like good video games despite the in-universe hype. Seeing Shangri-La Frontier is like seeing a love letter to all video games out there, from Dark Souls to MonHun. It's such a blast!
Absolutely! I'd definitely say it's one of the core reasons why I've been so engaged in watching the anime.
I think even more importantly though is how it balances the two "extremes" of video game series.
Log Horizon provides the extreme on the "low fantasy" style where the entire approach to mechanics and interaction is much more technical and high level, focusing on synergy, tactics, and planning. Then there's SAO which basically throws everything video game out the window and just makes it seem "cool".
Both series certainly have their spots, and Log Horizon is by far the more "true" video game series, but bringing things to that level can really alienate a lot of people who just like video games, which is where Shangri-La Frontier steps in.
It's got a really strong balance between game mechanics and action choreography where you understand that there's cooldowns and moves and whatnot, but that they fit rather naturally into the grand scheme. A similar thing can be said about stuff like the guilds. There's PKers, specialized clans, the dominating power clans, etc. etc. It presents a very wide world without making it nauseating or slow to the viewer, which works great.
And the last bit about game references, it's definitely very fun to see them being made! My personal favorites are the FFXIV monsters that are included.
It really just have the right amounts of everything to appeal to anyone that likes video games, and I really wish more series were able to find that middle ground.

Tori watched the scene play out before him in awe. He knew Yuzuru knew how to fight but watching him go up against someone else like this was something else. Makoto had clearly been working hard too to be able to keep up with someone like Yuzuru.
He must have been too enamored in watching the fight scene play out that he didn't notice when Hokuto walked over and grabbed his hands to pull him to his feet for their break. Tori protested and told Hokuto not to grab him like that, but Hokuto seemed confused and took Tori by the hand and dragged him back to the break table, talking about what both of them needed to work on for the other scenes.
Tori couldn't help but feel distracted by Hokuto's hand over his own, though. It was warm and large enough to completely cover his, admittedly pretty small hands. He knew that he should be paying attention to what Hokuto was saying but his mind was going haywire over the contact from the other boy.
Maybe he could forgive Hokuto for his transgressions just this once.

Shangrila, Oshkosh 2022.
I don’t remember seeing this one in person before, though I may be mistaken. Glad to see it either way.
