Sakura falls quiet once more at the words, sea green eyes averting their gaze towards the ground before her rather then the man beside her. In full truth, she still wasn't completely sure how she felt about the reformed shinobi. So many horrible things that happened were the result of Obito. And yet she felt that if he hadn't had a change of heart, know of them may have been standing here today. It was all so confusing... "...Your cause had good intentions." The medical-nin managed to find her words again. "The methods may have not been something I agree with, but..." She shook her head lightly, scolding herself internally. "You wanted to be hokage. That was your dream, wasn't it?" She decided to ask instead.

A/N: Oookieee, so I decided to start writing a new fic bc I have great ideas for a story line. Yet I can’t bring myself I writing an actual beginning. Like I’ve already written some random chapters, but I can’t do anything with them because they don’t really make much sense without the context of the rest of the fic/my ideas. Like this chapters is where the romance/actual x reader gets into actual action. Hopefully you get the gist of what the plot is, and aren’t confused as hell from this part. Sorry if it’s a bit long, it’s around 4.8k-ish words. Enjoy 💜

Hatake Kakashi wasn't one to celebrate his birthday.
He simply thought that they were foolish excuses to let loose and party. To Kakashi, birthdays were no reason to be happy and celebrate. They were just reminders of how long he had endured the pain of living. Each year marked another without the people he once held close in his heart. His father, his sensei, his teammates, and (y/n)...
The day that (y/n) gone on that horrible mission was his special day. The mission he was supposed to go on, but (y/n) filled in for because she wanted him to go celebrate with Gai and the others. So much for having the day of joy...Kakashi thought to himself mournfully.
With a great sigh, he grabbed the last of his belonging, shoving them in his mission pack. He'd promised to take his students out of a group mission for the day, but it had been mostly for selfish reasons. Kakashi had hoped that this would take his mind off of the weight in his soul, yet knowing that his efforts would be futile. The loss would never leave him, it would always follow him like a darned shadow. It would forever haunt him. There was not letting go of the horrors of his past.
Slowly, Kakashi strolled to the gates of Konoha to meet his kids, shoving his hands in his pockets as he mumbled a little tune under his breath. The dark cloudy sky and drizzling rain seemed to mirror how he felt inside.
Drip, drop. Drop, drop. Drop, drop.
Each raindrop fell upon the dirt paths of the town, dampening Kakashi's Jonin uniform. If only he'd gone on that mission, if only he hadn't let (y/n) take his place. If only so many things that happened hadn't. If only he felt whole again. He could feel the heavyweight of guilt on his shoulders, spreading pain throughout his body. Sure, Team 7 filled the void, but they could only do so much. If there is one thing I wish for, it is that these kids will grow up to be happy.
A soft smile played upon Kakashi's face as he approached the three teens. "KAKASHI-SENSEI!" His hyperactive blonde student, Uzumaki Naruto, yelled at him, "YOU'RE LATE-TTEBAYO!" He raised his fist in anger. Sakura glared at both Kakashi and Naruto, slapping the boy's back to calm him down. Off to the side stood Sasuke, his hands in his pockets as he briefly kicked the dirt and pebbles around him to form his clan's symbol. "Usuratonkachi," he grumbled at the group. To be honest, Kakashi did feel a little guilty about keeping the kids waiting for him. They were being held back just because he was wallowing in self-pity. And Kakashi felt ashamed of that; ordering his mind to push his thoughts further to the back of his mind.
Kotetsu and Izumo, guards of the gates, turned to the team and smiled in greeting. "The gate opening mechanism is broken, so we have to manually open the gates," they explained. "Heading out yet again, eh?" Kotetsu chuckled. "I thought you lot just came back from a mission. Ya leaving so soon?" Izumo asked. Naruto pumped his hand into the air, "Yeah! Dattebayo! It's only a C rank, but it'll be fun-ttebayo!"
He's a lot like you, eh Obito, Kakashi's mind wandered as he looked up at the clouded sky, a drop of rain fell upon his nose and slid down his mask. If only you, Minato-sensei, and Rin were here to see us in action. You would be proud.
But what about (y/n)? Part of Kakashi was surprised that he didn't think of her immediately. Did he still believe that she could've been alive? After the Hokage had told him that he'd lost contact with (y/n), Kakashi didn't know what to think. It had been 3,650 days since she left. 3,589 since she was supposed to come back. And 3,529 days since they fully lost contact. What were the chances she'd come back, alive or injured? Kakashi wanted to believe that she was still alive. Was that realistic?
"She's gone, Kakashi! You need to understand that!" He flashed back to when Asuma, Gai, and Kurenai had tried to slap some sense into him. Well actually, Kurenai had slapped him. "Kakashi-sensei?" Sakura gently tugged his sleeve, straining her arm up so her red umbrella would also cover his head. "Are you okay? You've been spacing out a lot lately." She whispered as she looked up at him.
"I'm fine, Rin," Kakashi weakly smiled, "It's nothing that you should worry about." Sakura flashed him a questioning look, "Rin?" Sucking the air, Kakashi's whole body tensed up, "Sorry." He looked away, turning his attention to the bickering Sasuke and Naruto. "Just a little mix-up, Sakura." He put on a fake smile, breaking up the boy's fight. "Let's go, shall we?"
"Alright! Shanaroo!"
"Dattebayo!"
Kotetsu and Izumo went to open the gates but stopped to exchange worrisome glances. "Someone just knocked from the other side of the gates. Which is weird because our list says that we shouldn't be expecting anybody." Izumo knit his eyebrows together. Kotetsu, who had been looking through a glass which allowed him to see the incomer, hastily urging Izumo to help him. "ANBU!" He had barked at his partner, "Bleeding! Dying, wounds, whatever! They need medical attention!" That had caught Kakashi's attention, he got ready to act as the guards opened up the gates, heaving on the rusted hinges. Yet he was not mentally prepared for what awaited on the other side of the grand doors.
There she stood. Uniform torn, stained and ripped up. The wakizashi sword that was strapped to her hip was blunt and scratched, the sheath dented. Skin scratched and bruised, wounds dripping with blood and gore. A long x shaped cut on the inner side of her left thigh. Gasping and choking for air, she started to wobble, blood dribbling down her limbs and stomach. The rain continued to fall, now hard and heavy; burning and searing the wounds of the lady. Yet she still managed to keep her face from wavering In an instant, Kakashi recognized who the woman was based on her cracked porcelain ANBU mask. (y/n).... "Sakura! Go alert the hospital. And you two boys, clear the way for Sakura so she can get there. Quickly!" Kakashi ordered them as he took the heavily wounded woman in his arms. Anger and fear coursed through Kakashi's veins as his heart thumped erratically. He could feel (y/n)'s body twitch in pain. "Izumo, go let Hokage-sama know that Ibara-hime has returned." Kakashi let out one last demand before zipping off to follow his kids.
"Kakashi..." (y/n) mumbled out his name, "Kakashi..." she shakily rose her hands up to gently cup his masked cheeks. "What is it?" He whispered, gently rubbing her skin through a torn patch of her ripped uniform. "Happy birthday, Hatake..." She softly breathed, her tight grip of Kakashi's chest loosened as her eyes dropped closed. Please don't die, (y/n)... I've waited all the fucking years. You aren't leaving me again. A tear formed in Kakashi's eye, flying off with the rain as he bolted towards the hospital. Stay with me a bit longer, will you?
"My sensei will be here any second with an ANBU woman in need of immediate medical attention!" Kakashi heard Sakura's voice quiver as he barged into the hospital. "I'm here, kids. Go to Gai-sensei and stay with him until I'm back." He quickly barked, flashing all of the nurses who flowed into the room a nervous look. "Please, help her. I'm begging you." He pleaded with the staff uncharacteristically. I need her to live. Need. "We do what we can, sir." One of the medic-nin nodded, putting (y/n)'s unconscious body onto the stretcher. If (y/n) lives, that would be the best birthday gift ever.
Kakashi jogged after the nurses and doctors, peering into the emergency clinic room through the window. "I'm sorry, Sir, but you won't be able to visit the lady until all the major injuries have been cleaned up and treated." A male nurse out his hand in his shoulder from behind. "But..! Okay..." Kakashi let out a sigh, "Isn't there any paperwork that needs to be filled out?"
The nurse shook his head, "The Hokage has come and is speaking to one of my colleagues about it. Don't worry about it. You won't have to take care of any of that." He tried to reassure the angsty shinobi, "The woman is part of the ANBU ranks, right? Her mask is of the uniform." Kakashi nodded his head, biting his lip inside of his mask, "Yeah...she is... but it's kinda complicated." The nurse raised his eyebrow but just shrugged. "Can I speak with the Hokage?" The Hatake requested. "Come this way," the other man sighed, leading him away.
Tumblr media
Kakashi let out a deep and long sigh as he held (y/n)'s scraped hand in his gloved ones. He had been told by the same nurse from before that (y/n) was in a decent state to accept visitors, yet was still unconscious. He could tell that the nurse was hiding something from him, but he was too worried about (y/n) to give it a second thought. Hesitantly, he brought her hand to his masked lips, gently pressing them against the fabric. "Ya know, (y/n). After you left, I decided to give those goddamn books a try. And you're right, they are addictive. Thanks for the gift," Kakashi sadly chuckled before pausing for a moment.
"Those books, they helped me a lot. They helped me get through my days, just like you told me."
"They also helped me realize something. They helped me realize that I don't hate you. I don't want to hate, and I never should've."
"I've realized that I was such a dick to you at the beginning and that it was all my fault that our relationship became how it was. I regret it... So when you wake up again, I just want to start over again. Maybe not entirely, but just so that we can leave all the hate behind us. How does that sound?"
Kakashi stared at the sleeping (y/n), her chest heaving up and how slowly and rhythmically. It hurt him to see her like that, her skin swollen in the places of the stitches and anointed bruises. "Listen, (y/n). I'd never been able to tell this to you while you're conscious, so I might as well let it out now. I...I love you." Kakashi rightly shut his uncovered eye. "After feeling your loss, my dumbass self finally realized how much you are worth. After they pass on, you and the others were all I had left. But then you also left me, that hurt like hell." His tone started to break.
"Lord Hokage told me about the whole fake-death move, and I was relieved that you weren't gone for good. And then we lost contact, everybody assumed the mission had been finished, and your squad sacrificed your lives for it. I couldn't let the fact that you could be a dead sink in. It didn't feel right. Gai, Asuma, and Kurenai tried to get me out of another depression cycle. Kurenai even went to the lengths of quite literally slapping some sense into me." Kakashi played with a loose strand of (y/n)'s (h/c) hair.
Tumblr media
The muscles of (y/n)'s hand twitched ever so slightly. Kakashi's drooping head snapped up; he'd almost fallen asleep in the chair. "(y/n)?" He murmured as her eyes started to flutter, "(y/n)?"
(y/n) chapped lip parted ever so slowly, taking a big breath of air, her (e/c) eyes squinting. "Hatake..?" She shakily managed to mumbled, her voice hoarse and dry. She tried to prop herself up on the bed, but Kakashi eased her back into her resting position. "Rest, (y/n), you're not ready to stress yourself yet." Kakashi to her, "I'll be back with a nurse and some water for you, alright?" (y/n) opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She simply looked down and nodded.
Moments later, Kakashi came back with the nurse and water. "Here," he carefully put the cup to her lip, gently tipping the cup, "Good." He turned to the nurse, who seemed to be scribbling something down from the little monitor to his clipboard. Kakashi's eyes followed the cord attached to it, to the long x shaped hash in (y/n)'s inner left thigh. What worried Kakashi was the anxious look on the nurse's face.
"(l/n)-san, your vitals are doing alright, but you'll have to stay here for a night or two just so that we can keep an eye on something's that may need monitoring." He curtly nodded his head, "Lord Hokage wished to speak to you. So, sir, that means you may have to leave."
Kakashi tried to reason with the other man, but (y/n) reached to weakly squeeze his thigh. "It's okay, Hatake. You can just drop by later." (y/n) tried to smile. "Fine," Kakashi grumbled, leaving the room and letting Hiruzen in.
Tumblr media
After what seemed like an eternity, Hiruzen came back out. "How's (y/n)?" Kakashi asked him impatiently. The Hokage put his hand on Kakashi's shoulder as if trying to soothe him, "She'll be better soon. Don't worry, alright." The silver-haired shinobi let out a small grunt, "I know that she'll get better with time. But what about now?"
Kakashi knew that Hiruzen loved (y/n) almost like a daughter, he cared about her deeply. Hence the elaborate cover-ups to protect (y/n) and her squad on the unconventionally lengthy mission. The Hatake could see the sadness that had tried to be tucked away in the Sarutobi's eyes. "The main concern of the moment is the poison in the gash on her left thigh. The medic-nins have tried to extract as much of it as possible, and try to find something that will counteract the effects." The elderly man explained to him. "Did they find an antidote?" Kakashi questioned.
"That is where the problem lies," Hiruzen explained, "There is a certain medicinal herb that is used alongside a jutsu to nullify the effects, as the poison has traces of chakra. We have a few medics on hand who support the skill to perform the jutsu, but we don't have the plant. Even so, that won't be a permanent cure." Kakashi knit his eyebrows together, "How would it not be a perfect cure? Plus, since there are traces of chakra, could we possibly track down the person who created the poison and make them fess up on the cure?" He questioned.
"Great thinking, but..." Hiruzen groaned, "(y/n) said that they performed a self-destruction jutsu just after striking her. He probably thought that it would be in their best interest to take their secrets to the grave with them." Kakashi cursed under his breath, "Fuck... This is terrible."
Hiruzen nodded in agreement, "No duh."
Kakashi's head shot up, "Uh?!"
The elder man's eyes widened, "Did I use the term correctly?! I'm trying to pick up on the phrases the kids are using these days..."
Kakashi gritted his teeth, "Right idea of the meaning, I guess. But the context and timing...wasn't quite fit." Looking ever so slightly dejected, "Oh...alright." Smoothening out the wrinkles in his robe and putting in his cob pipe, "Kakashi, if you are going to stay here with (y/n), could you at least pick up some good food. The food in the hospital canteen is quite bland." Kakashi nodded his head and obliged, only to be stopped in his tracks by Hiruzen.
"Kakashi, I'd like to ask you something?"
"What is it?"
"What caused your change in actions towards (y/n) change so much?"
"What do you mean?"
"I've observed you two whilst you were in the ANBU together, and you never got along that well. And suddenly you act so attached to her, Kakashi. You don't need to answer. It's just that as your leader, I want to understand what is going on in the heads of some of my most trusted people." Hiruzen explained to Kakashi, puffing out a cloud of smoke from his cob pipe.
Kakashi frowned from behind his mask, trying to figure out how to explain his change of feelings in a professional manner. "I think that after I was given the impression that she was gone, I noticed that I cared about her. It made me realize that I was wrong to not see how much she meant in my life." He tried, his voice fading off into a whisper. Hiruzen smiled and nodded, "You really are something else, Kakashi."
Tumblr media
Kakashi silently strolled over to Ichiraku's to grab some takeout. The paper lanterns lit the nearly empty streets of Konoha, creating a soft and soothing ambiance. The smell of the rain and moisture still clung to the air, the dirt roads had muddy dampness to them. "Yo! Kakashi, my eternal rival!" A boisterous and friendly voice greeted the said man. "Hey, Gai," Kakashi responded, he noticed his students sitting alongside each other and gave them a quick wave and smile. Naruto and Lee were arguing about who'd get Sakura. Sakura insisted that Sasuke would come around in her favor. Sasuke was quietly eating his food. And Neji and Tenten were discussing a new sword they saw in the windowsill of a weaponry shop.
"I'll take two eggplant miso soups with brown rice noodles," Kakashi leaned over the counter space between Lee and Naruto to order his meal, also effectively stopping the argument. "Thanks, Ayame," he thanked the daughter of Teuchi, owner of the quaint place. "No problem, Kakashi-san!" She chirped.
"Kakashi?" Gai raised his brushy brow, "Your kids told me about what happened this morning..." Kakashi sighed and pulled him aside so that they were at a comfortable distance, "It was (y/n)..." he told his best friend, "She's back and in the hospital because she's not in good health at the moment. I just came here to pick up a meal for her." Kakashi watched as Gai's jaw dropped, "(Y/N) IS ALIVE!" He exclaimed a touch too loud for his eternal rival's taste, "CAN I MEET HER?!" Tears of youthful joy waterfalled down the jumpsuit-clad man's cheeks. "I'll see if you can come tomorrow, alright Gai." Gai smiled broadly, "This is very...unusual. Youthful, nonetheless!" He grinned.
Kakashi rubbed the back of his head and nodded, "I'm glad she's back..." he murmured barely loud enough for Gai to hear. Knowingly, Gai patted Kakashi's back. "Oh! Yeah! Happy birthday, my youthful rival!" He gently punched his comrade's shoulder. A smile formed on Kakashi's lips, "Thanks, Gai." He flashed his eccentric friend his signature close-eyed smile.
"I'll see you later."
"Bye, Kakashi! Have a good night!"
Tumblr media
Knock knock, Kakashi rapt (y/n)'s door, "Can I come in?"
"Come in," (y/n) murmured, a small moan of pain escaping her lips, "Ouch..."
Kakashi quickly set the takeout on a little table, rushing to (y/n)'s side. He wrapped his arm tightly around her waist and helped her to the table. "I got us dinner because the food at the canteen isn't that good." He explained with a slight shrug. "Thanks, Hatake," a weak smile formed on her lips. The silvered-haired Jonin served them their meals. "Itadakimasu," they both mumbled.
Heavy tension filled the room as they ate in silence. (y/n) knew that Kakashi had his mask down, but didn't look up. "It's been a while..." Kakashi breathed, in hopes of hearing (y/n) speak, "Too long..." The kunoichi rested her forehead on her palm, "I- Yeah..." she mumbled, eyes growing classier by the second. So much for trying to start a conversation... Kakashi thought sadly as they resumed their meals without a word. The silence seemed to be killed him. Kami, it had been 10 goddamn years! 3650 days since he had gotten to talk to the woman. He missed her. Hell, he could even say that he missed all of their little spats. Hatake Kakashi missed everything about (y/n).
"I missed you..." was all Kakashi mumbled as he pushed his finished food away and pulled up his mask, "All these days, months, and years."
Hot tears slipped down (y/n)'s cheeks, forming a puddle on the table. "I-I came back be-because I didn't want-want to hurt you and the r-rest. Dying on passed down pain to the people who love you. I can't afford to c-carry the guilt of t-that." She mumbled shakily, "I promised to be back, a-and I held up the promise." Kakashi sadly smiled as he awkwardly reached under the table to gently caress (y/n)'s thigh.
"You care about others so much, but you should really take a moment to care about yourself, (y/n)." Kakashi scolded the injured kunoichi, "You had me scared for you; all those gashes and open wounds... You could've died," he knit his eyebrows together in worry. "Don't do that ever again."
(y/n)'s dull smile faltered as Kakashi spoke on, "Now you know how I felt when I saw you doing all those suicidal stunts back then on those missions. It was like you were in a hurry to die... I mean, I was too, but you did some seriously dumb shit," she giggled emptily. Kakashi sweat-dropped, "I see... I guess you are right..." (y/n) rolled her (e/c) eyes as the masked shinobi let out a drained sigh, "I'm always right, Hatake."
"Really, (l/n)? You've been through torturous pain, and you still act like a child." Kakashi groaned, "All these years..." (y/n) shot him a hard glare, "All these years and you still think you're in charge of me." He cast a confused look, "It's my duty to protect you, as a comrade." As a comrade... "I guess, but you're just annoying, Hatake," she huffed.
Tumblr media
"I'm sorry about ruining your birthday with my arrival and stuff. I probably ruined your plans with those kids." (y/n) looked down, breaking the silence that had fallen upon them, "I could hear you guys through the gate; they seemed pumped about going out. I'm sorry, I didn't think about the flaws in my whole plan." Kakashi's head snapped up from its resting position on the table, "It's fine, they don't even know it's my birthday," he paused, "But you planned to come here? As in, today in particular. With all those injuries, (l/n), you should've just tried to take care of yourself. My birthday isn't as important as your health."
The (y/n) shook her head, "I was going to stay at a small village pretty far from here before finally coming home. I planned to just heal up there and see how things went from there. I even considered settling down there. But that just didn't feel right," (y/n) face set in a frown, "Once I realized that your birthday wasn't that far off, I decided that I couldn't stay and needed to come back. I doubted I would even live to be back. But here I am..." she said with a soft wince of pain. "It was terrible, I hated every second of it," Her (s/t) fingers made their way to the raw mark on her inner thigh, “I’d already lost so much; there was nothing for me to lose at that point.” Kakashi's face softened as he understood what she meant. (y/n) wasn't put in the mission alone, she had her team. They all must've been killed with time.
"Ouch!" (y/n) yelped as she let out a moan of pain, clenching the fabric of her hospital-issued pajama pants. “Shh..." Kakashi whispered into her ear, quickly leaning in to soothe her, "What's causing all this pain?" He asked with a frown as (y/n) bit her lip. "It's the thing in your thigh, right? Lord Hokage and the nurse told me a bit about it. But I still don't fully understand it and how it can't fully be cured."
(y/n) buried her face in her hands, "Oh..." She mumbled, "The poison can't de be removed because it's already been inside of me too long. And since it is laced with chakra, the properties of it aren't completely like normal poison." She blinked back the stinging agonizing tears in her eyes, "The herb that I need is just going to ease the effects in my body, whilst the jutsu will seal it from triggering anything that was layered in with the chakra." (y/n) explained. Kakashi could tell she was trying her hardest to keep her face straight, pushing back the pain and hurting inside. "The thing is–"
"What?" Kakashi asked the pained woman, his tone soft and soothing, "I can help if I know what's going on."
Warily, (y/n) agreed to speak on, "The place where the mission was stationed at was just underground of the nuke-nin outpost I was from. And the guy who poisonous me was one of the other kids' experiments were done on, along with me. He was a few years older than us, and his name was Hiroto Myoga. His parents were in owed debt to the rogues, they were forced into being test subjects until they died. Which left Hiroto in the nuke-nin's hands." She rubbed the temple of her head pushing away the images that sent a shiver down her spine, "Something similar had happened in the case of my parents and me. But unlike me, when the ANBU did the raid, Hiroto was snuck away just in time."
Kakashi's heart sank as he heard what she was telling him. (y/n) had never known much about her past, the damned curse seal had caused. “Since he was older than most of the other kids there, the nuke-nin's of the outpost decided that they needed to trust their information. It was all precautionary, just in case they were taken down. And that's just what happened. Hiroto was the one ordered to put memory restriction curse seals on us, the kids, before he fled to be underground, where the actual harm was being done. That meant that all this time Hiroto had been working in those old plans." (y/n) closed her eyes tightly, tears welling up in the corners of her eyes.
With a subtle groan, Kakashi supported (y/n) up from the chair and rested her in her cot. "Don't stress yourself, (y/n). You can just tell me later; it's getting late anyway." He told her. "It's fine, Hatake. Letting this out helps me feel better." She reassured him.
"The ANBU caught wind of suspicious activity in that area and decided to send out a squad to go check out. I overheard Danzō arguing with Lord Hokage about it, and got interested. It was really dumb, but I just wanted to go to learn more about what happened in my past. I learned, but that can with lots of twists and turns. 10 years of going undercover..." (y/n)'s (e/c) eyes met Kakashi's single uncovered black one, "It wasn't long before Hiroto became suspicious of us, slowly narrowing the group down till it was just me." (y/n) took a deep breath and continued, "After Hiroto killed himself in our final fight, my curse seal was lifted. That's how I suddenly was able to remember all of the past. All of it."
A pit formed in Kakashi's stomach as he watched (y/n) cry in silence. He wanted to help her feel better, he really did. But he was afraid that he'd make things worse; dealing with feelings just wasn't his thing. "I'm here for you, (l/n). We've been through so much together, you've helped me through it all," Kakashi tried to reassure her, "It's my turn to look after you. Please, just don't cry." He reached out his hand to brush a tear-off of her streaked cheeks.
Tumblr media
“Are you okay with me staying here for the night?" Kakashi asked (y/n) as they sat at the bay window, looking down upon the empty moonlit streets of Konoha. The soft light cast down by the moon seemed to make everything look beautiful, serene, and at peace. "(l/n)?" He asked again, turning to look back at her. A gentle smile played on Kakashi's lips as he saw that she'd fallen asleep. (y/n) had been through so much throughout the day, she not only deserved to rest for a long time but also needed to. "Good night, (y/n)..." he carefully lifted the sleeping beauty and placed her on the cot. Sitting back at the bay seat, Kakashi took in a deep breath. "I love you."
She's finally back.
She's finally home.

Waking Up/Morning Routines with the Akatsuki
Sasori
Doesn’t sleep, so he’s literally always awake. Finds nighttime to be his most productive time, as everyone around him is finally quiet and out of the way. If he is impatient to get going on a mission in the morning, or for a meeting to start, he will purposely create a lot of loud noises outside of everyone’s doors, or dropping things in the kitchen, in order to get everyone up and moving.
Deidara
Goes through an embarrassing amount of alarm clocks each week, as he will inevitably smash (or blow up) one each morning. Half the time he falls asleep in the clothes he wore the day before, so dressing isn’t really an issue. Meticulously washes his face; will often “borrow” (sneak) Konan’s expensive face scrubs. Will have spent some time brushing out his hair the night before, so that in the morning all he has to do is tie it up. He hates facial hair (thinks it makes him look like “an old man”) so if there’s even a hint of stubble, he will shave. Brushing his teeth takes the longest because, obviously, he has THREE mouths to clean. Also has a weird tic about having uneven fingernails, so will aggressively file until he’s achieved what he considers perfection. Probably spends more time in the bathroom than anyone else; but the other members are used to it (and most times they wake up and are in/out of bathroom before Deidara anyway, so it’s not really an issue). Never feels hungry in the mornings but will grab a rice cake or something easy to eat if going on a mission.
Hidan
Similar to Deidara in that alarm clocks won’t last very long around him. Requests for Konan to wake him (to try and catch a glimpse of some early-morning nips) but ends up with Kakuzu. His habit has always been to commit his Jashin rituals at night, then fall asleep from exhaustion. When he gets up, he’s still covered in the mess that he created the night before, so he’ll head into the shower to wash it all away. Nobody wants to go into the bathroom after Hidan, because of all the blood and gore he leaves around the floor. Zetsu is the only one who will, and he’ll “clean” the mess (HOW he does it is something no one wants to question, and everyone will pretend they didn’t see how he licked his lips when he came out). His activities from the previous night leave him with a monstrously huge appetite in mornings — will raid the fridge for whatever he can get his hands on. Also, mornings are when his mouth is the least foul ((his brain is still catching up)), so it’s the best possible time to try and hold a calm and civil conversation with him.
Kakuzu
Time is money, and you can’t make any money if you’re sleeping. Is an extremely early riser; will be awake hours before anyone else, sitting at kitchen table and going through the Bingo Book for possible bounties to go after in his free time. Might spend some time chatting with the ever-awake Sasori, or sometimes Konan, as they’re the only ones in the Akatsuki that Kakuzu views as having the same kind of calm level-headedness as himself. Isn’t really a big morning-eater but will snack on a variety of berries or maybe a salad; after all these things are heart-healthy and Kakuzu’s got more than the average person, to take care of. However is a huge coffee-drinker and can (and has) go(ne) through an entire pot before anyone else even gets up. He’s a nighttime vs day showerer, so his only bathroom routine usually consists of brushing teeth and combing hair (which is surprisingly long for a man his age). Or, if the coffee catches up to him, spends a good amount of time with the newspaper, “dropping the kids off at the pool”.
Zetsu
Zetsu is rarely “home” at the same time everyone else is, so nobody is really sure of his morning routine. Actually ... nobody is even sure if he sleeps. There’s a lot about Zetsu that nobody is quite 100% sure on, and nobody is eager to find out, either.
Tobi/Obito
Once ready for his own day, Deidara will take on much of a parent’s role in Obito’s morning routine. Not necessarily because he wants to, or because he cares, but because Pein has (unfairly) made it clear that the orange-masked idiot is more or less Deidara’s “responsibility”. Tobi can wake up on his own, which is a plus; but after that it’s an endless litany of Deidara’s voice: “Did you brush your teeth?” “Did you wash your face?” “You’ve got stains all over your shirt; go change your clothes, hm!” However, once the bathroom door is shut, Obito can emerge, and it’s the only time of the day he can truly be himself. He’ll brush his soft hair, he’ll clean and floss his perfect teeth. He’ll stare at himself in the mirror for an infinite amount of time agonizing over the ruined side of his face ... He’ll also vigorously wash the inside and outside of his mask, with soap. When everything’s finished, he’ll put Tobi back on and race to the kitchen, begging Konan (or whoever else is in there) to make him pancakes. His energy will be found annoying (or intolerable) by some of the grumpier members, and will be told repeatedly to “Shut up, kid!”
Pein
Gods don’t sleep, therefore such a thing as getting up in the morning does not exist for Pein. Will only come out of his room once everyone else is awake, to assign missions or tasks for the day.
Konan
Konan is the embodiment of “Don’t talk to me before I’ve had my coffee.” Is very disciplined so will wake on on her own, and EARLY, but is an extremely reluctant riser. It was agreed from the beginning that, being the only woman, Konan would be the only member of the Akatsuki to have her own bathroom. Which is good, because Konan shudders at the thought of anyone seeing her in the morning before she’s done her hair and makeup. Is one of the few members that showers exclusively in the mornings; she can’t start the day without feeling that blast of scarily-hot water on her skin. Also likes to get in a bit of exercise, such as stretching and yoga. If ahead of his own schedule, Tobi will join her for the yoga, as he’s one of the more flexible members of the whole bunch. If in a charitable mood, will make breakfast for everyone, receiving probably the only sincere Thank You’s that any of them have ever uttered.
Kisame
Kisame is half-shark, and therefore does not have the same sort of sleeping routine that full humans do. He will have periods of rest throughout the entire day, as well as at night, but there’s never a time when he goes into a full, deep, out-of-it slumber. In the very early hours of the morning, if not otherwise engaged, he seeks out the nearest freshwater source and goes for a vigorous (and naked) swim. Spends so much time in the water that he sees no need for human trivialities like bathing; although he HAS picked up the habit of brushing his teeth. If somebody has made breakfast at the hideout he will eat it; otherwise he prefers to (again) find a water source, prey on smaller fish, and eat them, raw. Sometimes (although this is very rare) he’ll spend a morning in his room simply reading and sipping tea. He likes to read nature and animal-based books and magazines, and has an insatiable curiosity for learning about other species.
Itachi
An early riser by habit. Has a strong internal clock, and will know what time it is just based on the color of the air coming through the window. Spends his first half-hour of wakefulness in meditation, as it helps to center him for the day ahead. Like Kisame, he is a reader, and might spend some of his morning in the company of a good book. Another daylight-showerer. Spends more time on his hair than one would suspect; the only luxuries he allows himself in life are expensive shampoos, conditioners, and hair cream. Prefers his solitude until called upon to go on a mission, but will have rare bouts of wanting to be around the others, so might join for breakfast. Sometimes he will help Konan prepare it, as he’s a very good cook. Is also the unwitting problem-solver of the group; in the mornings, his door will be knocked on more than anybody else’s, from those seeking his opinion or advice.

What about if Sakura Sensei was killed on a mission and Sai was called in to be her replacement for her Genin team? Could you write about Kakashi, Obito and Rin's reactions and how they would get used to him? How Sai would win them over? It would be a slow process but I hope he would!
AO3
Mourning wasn’t something that a shinobi was given a lot of time to do, Kakashi had known that for a long time. Even in their academy days they had been taught the expectations when it came to mourning.
A lucky shinobi got to experience the loss, the funeral, and then they were expected to move on. An unlucky shinobi didn’t get to see their friends funeral, either because they were a traitor or failure who was deemed unworthy of a funeral, or because it was a time of war and their death was mourned at the same as countless others. Not giving a person the proper chance to mourn for those they had lost.
There was no time to process what had happened, or the hurt deep inside.
He had known what to expect, but somehow it still didn’t prepare him at all for this moment.
“A new Sensei!?” Obito screamed, tears streaming down his face. “We just buried Sakura-Sensei! How can you hand us a new Sensei so quickly!? How can you just replace her like that?”
“I am not simply replacing her,” Hiruzen-Sama spoke in a calm voice, not allowing Obito’s anger to get to him. “However, you require a Sensei to continue training you. Your training cannot stop simply because your Sensei has died.”
There’s not emotion in the words, and that’s probably what stings the most.
Their Sensei being treated like an expendable, replaceable shinobi. Not a person who lived and loved, but simply another warrior who’s spot needed to be filled.
“You can’t…” teaching out, Kakashi laid a hand on Obito’s shoulder to silence him. Though he didn’t bother to meet his teammates gaze when he looked back at him with tear stained eyes. “Kakashi…”
“We should at least give our new Sensei a chance.” the words burned on his tongue, but he forced himself to say them regardless. To ignore the deep pain inside of his chest and continue forward.
Just as he always had.
“It’s not right,” Rin spoke up, her head bowed so that her face was hidde from view. “Sakura-Sensei isn’t replaceable. She was our Sensei. Our…”
Kakashi could hear the hurt in his teammate's voice. There was no doubt Rin was taking this the hardest, since she had always been closest to Sakura-Sensei.
He could only imagine how much she was hurting.
“We’ll meet our new Sensei tomorrow,” he informed them, hating the look of horror that both of them cast upon him. “I’m sure they won’t be that bad.”
They’ll be horrible. Nothing like Sakura-Sensei, with her kind smile and reassuring words.
But he pushed forward anyways.
Because that’s what a good Shinobi does.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stepping into his apartment, Kakashi closed the door behind him and stood there, allowing the silence to envelope him as everything finally began to sink in.
A new sensei.
They were getting a new Sensei, when Sakura-Sensei hadn’t even been gone for a week. They were expected to move on and act like nothing was wrong. To be good little soldiers, just as always.
And he was tired.
Leaning his head back against the door, he stared up at the ceiling.
All of his life had been pain. Ever since he was little he had known nothing but the hatred and anger of the villagers, and he had come to accept that. No matter what he did, he would never be welcomed.
It was a pain that he was all too familiar with.
Far too used to.
But this. The deep hurt inside of his chest as the memory of Sakura-sensei’s lifeless body flashed in front of his eyes. The extraction of the sanbi too much for her body to handle.
The overwhelming guilt of knowing that she had sacrificed herself to protect him. That she had risked her own life and told Naruto-senpai to grab him and run while she fought the enemy.
That was a whole new experience he had never asked for.
“Why?” He asked an empty house. “Why would you…”
Closing his eyes, he finally allowed the tears to flow. In the safety of his own home, with no one around to see him, he finally crumbled.
“Why!?” Electricity crackled between his fingers. The familiar feeling of a deep anger burning in his veins. Not just his anger, but the monsters.
The anger of a beast locked away in a child, left to rot, seeping through his body.
Anger he had tried so desperately to keep at bay. To ignore at all costs, so that he wouldn’t have to see that fear in his teammates eyes ever again.
“why!?” The whole room shook with his fury. “Why did you have to...I didn’t ask for your protection!”
He doesn’t flinch when he hears the windows in his apartment shatter. In fact, he barely noticed it at all. Too wrapped up in his own hurt and anger.
Alone all of his life, with no one to watch out for him, he had never understood what loss felt like. How could he when he never had anything to lose?
But then he made friends, got a team, formed bonds with the people around him. He had actually allowed himself to think that he was allowed to have anything.
That happiness was something he could feel.
He can feel his consciousness slipping away. An overwhelming anger slowly bubbling inside of him. Overriding the sorrow and hurt inside of him, and burning so brightly that it began to boil over. Blood red chakra seeping out of his body and covering him from head to toe.
No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t keep it at bay.
Couldn’t stop the monster from finally taking over.
This was the moment he had feared for years. The day that he proved the village right. Everyone who yelled at him, called him a monster under his breath, hated him for simply existing. This was the moment they had feared, and no matter how much he wanted to stop it he couldn’t.
The anger was too powerful.
Then, just as darkness started to overtake him and the monster took over, he felt a sharp pain in his stomach. A powerful, gut wrenching hit that had him doubling over himself, his eyes shooting open and looking up at the source of the attack.
Tenten-sensei.
“Sorry kiddo,” she smiled back at him. The same smile she always had on her face whenever she had come to visit Sakura-sensei. Soft and welcoming. “I’ll be here when you wake up.”
This time when the blackness took over, he wasn’t afraid.
Today wasn’t going to be the day he destroyed the village, and for that he was thankful. Even if his whole body still felt like it was burning, and his stomach ached where Tenten-sensei had hit him, at least he wouldn’t turn into the monster that everyone feared.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
After a long rest, and more questions than he would have ever liked to answer, Kakashi finally made his escape from Hiruzen-sama’s office and headed straight for the training field.
Where him and his team were due to meet their new Sensei.
Keep your emotions in check, Kakashi
Hiruzen-sama’s words followed him, repeating over and over again in his mind.
The same words he had heard since he was a kid.
No matter what he did. How much he grew, fought, struggled. It always came back to those 5 simple words.
Keep your emotions in check.
“Kakashi!” Hearing Rin calling out for him, Kakashi looked up to see her and Obito standing in the training field waving towards him. Smiles on their faces, and excitement in their eyes.
Something he could only assume they were feeling because of the man standing behind them. In a black and grey crop top with a large scroll attached to his back and the worst hair Kakashi had ever seen.
It wasn’t right.
That wasn’t who was supposed to be with them, and if it was they shouldn’t be smiling.
It all felt so wrong.
Landing in front of his teammates, Kakashi cringed when Obito ran straight up to him and threw an arm over his shoulder, clearly excited for whatever was about to come.
“Sai-sensei said he’s going to show us some cool jutsu’s that no one else could do,” His voice bubbled with enthusiasm. Obito, forever a sucker for a cool new jutsu. “He says that he has a lot to teach us.”
It all seemed so wrong. Just yesterday Obito and Rin were so heartbroken over Sakura-sensei’s death, and now it was as if it had never happened?
The whole thing made him sick.
“Whatever it is, i don’t want to see it,” shoving Obito’s arm off of his shoulder, he turned his back to them all. Refusing to look at them. “I don’t need to see any new jutsu’s. I’m here to train, not watch someone show off.”
“Kakashi…” He could hear Rin walking towards him, but she stopped short. Knowing his dislike for unwelcomed physical contact, she apparently chose to keep her distance. “Sai-sensei is actually really cool. He was friends with Sakura-sensei. Just...give him a chance, please?”
Glaring back at his friend, he huffed.
Deep down inside his heart still ached, but he couldn’t show it.
He refused to show it.
Keep your emotions in check, Kakashi
He focused on Hiruzen-sama’s words and took a deep breath, turning to face the team once again.
“I’m here to train,” directing the words to his new Sensei, he refrained from growling when his words were met with a smile. “So train us or leave us be. Don’t waste my time showing off.”
It may have been harsh, but there was never a time that Kakashi hadn’t been known for being too harsh.
“In that case, we’ll focus on training,” Sai-sensei responded with a cool, relaxed voice. The smile still plastered on his face. “Let’s start with seeing how much you have grown under Sakura, hmmm?”

When We Were Young
i.
She was soft and too pink and Kakashi hated her. How was he ever meant to become a great ninja and erase the stain of his father’s name if he couldn’t even be paired with decent teammates? He’d thought since Obito and Rin were both sick his temporary team might be better, might have stronger members that would help him grow instead of hold him back like usual. This was not what he had expected.
As if the rambunctious blonde who failed to catch him in a poorly concealed trap when he arrived wasn’t enough, the idiot pink-haired girl moping off to one side was a whole different story of terrible. Upon discovering that he would be standing in for “Sasuke-kun” today she had all but folded in half with disappointment and the already incorrect grip she had on her kunai had fallen out of place even more. Kakashi sniffed in her direction, thoroughly disappointed. These two were barely ninjas and would probably never make it past genin. Was the blond one really Sensei’s son?
For the entire day of training under the strangely emotionless Sai-sensei, all that Haruno Sakura did was compare him to her precious Sasuke-kun. She spoke of the boy constantly and told Kakashi how in love she was three times in just the first hour. By the end he was ready to stab both her and the poor idiot who obviously didn’t like her back.
And why should he? There was nothing to like; there was no substance to her. Sakura’s feet stood for Sasuke, her arms lifted for Sasuke, her heart beat for Sasuke. There was not a single part of her that fought for her own sake and Kakashi couldn’t stand the weakness of it. Didn’t she realize that love would break her? He would have pitied her if he could be bothered with the emotion but it was much easier to dismiss all three of these useless people from his mind.
When Kakashi left training he left his thoughts of Sakura behind him. He went back to Obito and Rin, still just as useless but at least a kind of useless he could work with. He went back to Minato-sensei, the strongest shinobi he had ever met who he just knew would cave and teach him the hiraishin one of these days. If he didn’t then Kakashi would just have to learn how to be faster by himself.
 ii.
He was broken when she found him and even if he didn’t know it then this was only the first time that she would put him back together. She led him back to the fading light with whispers of hope, of Obito surviving, of a surgery gone well. Kakashi felt like she was pulling his head above the water and giving him air to breathe when for a minute he’d forgotten how.
Later it would shame him that he’d forgotten her so quickly in the moment, although she always insisted that she didn’t blame him. He was only twelve and the only friend he’d never even realized he had was alive, alive, alive. Obito was breathing despite odds. His arm would never be the same again and his leg had been amputated but his heart was beating steadily as Kakashi collapsed across his chest and wept like he hadn’t since his father had been alive.
Only after the storm had passed and he sat wiping at his face in embarrassment did a very tired Rin murmur quietly that it was all thanks to Sakura-chan.
“She did what I couldn’t,” his teammate told him with a hitch in her breath. “You both did. I was no help; I never am. But you brought him home and Sakura-chan brought him back to life and I just stood there like a stupid lump!”
“You’re not useless, Rin.” She looked at him like she’s never seen him before and Kakashi found that somehow more embarrassing than crying in front of her. “It was my fault the both of you were in danger in the first place. Obito was brave. And so were you. Both of you are always…really brave.”
Brave for facing the emotions that he’d never been able to face before. What he had always seen as a weakness they used as a strength and that was something he admired. Minato-sensei had been trying to teach him for years the truth about teamwork but it had taken him until now to get it. A team was not built on the back of whoever was strongest. No, a team was built on the strength of all of its members, every person bringing a skill to the table to cover the weaknesses of others and create an impenetrable unit.
He found the one he was looking for slumped over and sleeping on a bench. Sakura was only twelve years old, just the same as he was, but she had assisted with a seven hour surgery after being awoken in the middle of the night and she must have been very tired. Instead of disturbing her, Kakashi sniffed out the closest linen closet and brought her a blanket. It settled over her like the peace settling in his chest, a feeling he wasn’t familiar with. Fitting, he thought. The whole world around him looked unfamiliar now.
“Thank you.” He left his words as a whisper in her ear before disappearing down the hallway back to Obito’s room, not bothering to check over his shoulder to see bright green eyes fluttering awake.
 iii.
Obviously he heard about Tsunade. The whole village had heard about Tsunade. She was sort of hard to miss as she came marching down the streets of Konoha bellowing, “Bring me your prodigy!” as though she hadn’t abandoned the village years ago.
Kakashi didn’t find out the context for this until late that night, huddled behind the academy with Rin and Obito, trading sips from a can of red bean tea. That was when Rin told him with only the shadow of jealously in her voice that the Lady Tsunade had returned to Konoha to chase the rumors of a medical prodigy.
She was here to apprentice Haruno Sakura.
Turning this information over in his mind slowly, Kakashi contemplated what he should say to that. She deserved it, in his opinion. If not for her Obito wouldn’t be sitting beside him wearing a prosthetic leg, tired from a long day of physical therapy. On the other hand, she wasn’t who his loyalty was owed to.
“Well you’ll just have to show her that there are two prodigies in the Leaf,” he said, carefully not looking over in Rin’s direction. “Lady Tsunade better be ready to have two apprentices.”
He dodged the hug and scowled at the hair ruffling. It was as easy as ever to turn Obito’s teasing comments in to light hearted bickering, the very foundation of their friendship which continued to this day no matter how much stronger their bonds had grown. Just because he was learning what it was to have friends didn’t mean he enjoyed being the center of attention any more than he used to. What mattered was that Rin was smiling again and looked more determined than ever and he hoped Sakura was prepared for a little competition.
 iv.
She split the ground with her fist the first time he saw her in a battle and Kakashi felt his heart cracking along the fault lines, fluttering like a weak thing behind his ribs. It was hard to believe she was the same bubblegum girl he had hated on first sight and a part of him wondered if she still moved and breathed and fought for her Sasuke-kun. Joining ANBU had kept him from fighting with the regular forces – even Rin and Obito hadn’t been at his side in nearly a year now – so it was rather easy to see how he might have never seen Team 7 fight before.
It was also easy to see he’d been missing out.
Although it might have been an odd detail to latch on to, Kakashi couldn’t help but notice that she had cut her hair. The pink strands were sweat drenched and dirt stained; they clung to her face and neck in a manner that should not have been anywhere near as alluring as it was. He almost lost his footing, actually stopping to stare in awe, as he bent herself to the earth and tore it open with a roar that shook the spine inside him.
Stupidly, he mind couldn’t help repeating that old line he couldn’t remember the origin of: she’s beauty, she’s grace, she’ll punch you in the face.
Even more stupidly, for some reason he felt as though he wouldn’t mind if she punched him in the face. He shook the feeling off by turning and sliding his kunai through an enemy’s throat. It was pure coincidence that his targets had happened upon a group of fellow Konoha shinobi just before Kakashi caught up to them, darting out of the shadows and in to the fray with nary a word to those already fighting. Sakura and her companions had grown so much since that day he dismissed them all as useless.
After the dust had settled and the only people standing bore the symbol of the Leaf, Sakura turned to him with a smile streaked in blood and eyes so bright he almost shielded his own.
“Thank you for your assistance, ANBU-san,” she called. “You fight pretty good.”
He was forever thankful that his double masks neatly covered the blush rising on his cheeks as he slipped back in to the shadows without a word. The Uchiha, whom he presumed was the fabled Sasuke-kun, watched him go with a single eyebrow raised. He looked a lot like Itachi, although the same could be said of everyone in their clan.
Kakashi made sure to casually mention the encounter to Minato-sensei later when he made his report in the Hokage’s office. He watched his old teacher swell up with pride that his son’s team had made such a good impression on one of his best, asking eagerly what Kakashi thought of them. Before he could stop himself the words seemed almost to fall from his lips like a cart running out of control.
“I think she’s beautiful.”
Minato-sensei laughed until his belly must have hurt. Kakashi smacked his shoulder and left without being dismissed.
 v.
“Do you still live for someone else?”
Probably it was a weird question to ask someone when their hands were wrist deep inside your abdomen and their chakra was the only thing stopping you from bleeding out. Kakashi had never been too concerned with social norms, though.
Instead of answering Sakura gave him a desperate wild look as she screamed over her shoulder for someone to signal the Hokage. He knew what that meant. They wouldn’t be able to transport him back in time. Minato-sensei’s teleportation was their only hope of keeping him alive. Maybe that should have bothered him more but when Kakashi was twelve he had seen this girl perform a miracle and if ever there was someone who’s hands he trusted it was her.
“S-Sakura.” His voice was small and wet. How strange. “Sakura do you…still live for someone else?”
For some reason it felt important that she answer. It wasn’t as though her answer would matter, in this life or the next. There was no way for her to know that the shadows watched her sometimes as she laughed at the bar with her friends. There was no way for her to know that the flowers that sometimes showed up on her doorstep came from his hand. There was no way she knew how hard he had fallen for a girl who felt so strongly and yelled so loudly that it shook away the darkness in him until all he knew was the light she gave off so freely.
“Don’t speak, ANBU-san,” she admonished him. Her brow creased in concentration as she forced more chakra in to his belly. Kakashi barely paid attention to the arching of his spine or the way blood bubbled up between his lips.
“You…lived for him. You breathed and broke and fought for him.” Breathing was more difficult than it should have been. “You shouldn’t.” When she looked down at him he prayed she couldn’t see through the holes in his mask or the cracks in his soul. “You are…enough on your own. No one should own who you are.”
He didn’t get to see Minato-sensei arrive. Too soon his vision faded and Kakashi spared a thought for Rin and for Obito, hoping they wouldn’t take this too hard. Better friends he could never have asked for. He owed them so much but he was certain both of them knew what they meant to him. No ghosts came with him when he felt the world fade to black around him.
 vi.
“You’re stupid,” were the first words he heard upon regaining consciousness.
“I hear that a lot,” he croaked, “though never in regards to my actual intelligence. What have I done now?”
Only after he spoke did he crack his eyes open, immediately closing them again. His hospital bed – and he was obviously in a hospital bed – was set directly underneath the harsh halogen lights. A quick jerking tug sent his bed skittering to one side with a terrible squealing noise, obviously not the sound of a bed on wheels, and that answered the unspoken question of who had just called him an idiot before he was fully conscious.
“Hello Haruno-san,” he murmured, opening his eyes again now that he was out of the light’s path.
“Don’t you Haruno-san me you stalker creep.”
Despite her words she sounded more amused that anything else. That was the only thing that gave Kakashi the courage to roll his eyes to the side and take her in, knowing that if he moved his head a headache would start up. She looked as good in her medic’s uniform as she always did. Her hair, recently trimmed, was held back with a few cute little pins. On her face she wore an expression he’d seen too often on Rin, a mixture of irritation, exasperation, and fondness. He was more surprised than usual to see the fondness.
“Uhm…”
“If you wanted to ask me out you would have been better served using words instead of waiting around outside the hospital every morning.”
“You…saw that?”
“No but Rin-chan and I chat. Girls do that, you see. She’s been an absolute gold mine of interesting tidbits while you were sleeping.”
“Note to self: murder Rin.”
“Don’t you dare! We made a bet and I’m going to win; I won’t let you make me lose, you hear!”
“A bet?” Doing his best to ignore the way his head immediately began to pound, Kakashi turned to look at her in curiosity. “What kind of bet?”
Sakura waved one hand through the air casually. “Oh just a little thing. If I confront you and get a date then she has to go confront Obito and get a date out of him too.”
Kakashi stared. Swallowed. Shifted in his bed. Stared some more.
There was no porcelain mask to hide the blush this time and it was doubly embarrassing for her to see the line of red that crept overtop the small paper one some nurse had stretched over his mouth. Unless it had been her that put it on him. Had she been a part of his surgery? Had she peeked?
Putting that small panic-inducing thought aside for later, Kakashi had to clear his throat twice before he could string enough words together to respond to his long-time crush.
“Well. I’ve been telling those two to get their heads out of their asses for ages now. Who am I to turn down such an opportunity for them?” He smiled shakily when Sakura snorted.
“For them. Of course.”
“That’s me, the dutiful friend.”
“I hope you make as dutiful a date, Hatake Kakashi.” Sakura’s hand brushed his rather deliberately as she stood and made for the door. “Rumor says you have a habit of being as late for everything as Obito is. If you’re late for our first date I’ll remove your teeth for you.”
She was pink and only soft if you weren’t looking at her muscles – and Kakashi was so in love.

Little Things We Treasure Chapter One: Learn the Constellations
*waves*
A Kakasaku fic here! I finally got it written lmao.
I don’t know how many chapters this will be but expect more than one!
For @yolkygoblin for dragging me into this hell (I love, you don’t worry and also THANK YOU VERY MUCH)
Please no ship bashing or hate, Sakura is over eighteen.
Fluff!
Possibly ooc, I’m sorry!
Kakashi has to be honest, he doesn’t think much about doing mundane, normally things that so many others have already done.
He doesn’t quite get the appeal of stargazing, not really, not even during the comet showers that has so many people clamouring about the shooting stars.
Not like there has been anyone to drag him outside before, and it reminds him of his old team, how they used to laugh and point out constellations, Obito and Rin screaming joyfully whenever they saw a shooting star, Minato always joining in, childishly making wishes with them while Kakashi ignored them.
It’s something he certainly regrets but there’s nothing he can change.
He’s walking home one night from his office, reading his Icha Icha Paradise books (Sakura lets him keep his collection as long as she never sees it and he never breathes a word of it to her) and he looks up for some unexplained reason.
He blinks, stopping in his tracks.
The sky is full of stars, shining as far as he can see.
He knows the constellation’s names by heart, Rin and Obito spent hours trying to teach him but he can’t quite pick them out.
He tries for bit more, footsteps in the background coming closer before stopping next to him.
“Kakashi,” Sakura suddenly says and Kakashi looks back down, Sakura looking up at him, raising an eyebrow, mud staining her clothing, dirt lining her hair. “What are you doing?”
Kakashi laughs sheepishly. “Ah, Sakura. Welcome back,” he greets her, lifting a hand in an attempt to comb the dirt of her now almost grey hair, the other quickly stowing the Icha Icha Paradise book in his pouch.
“Nice to see you too,” Sakura replies, her green eyes glittering with joy. Kakashi grins and looks up again.
Sakura follows his gaze, instantly pointing at a group of stars.
“Look, Aries!” she exclaims and Kakashi frowns, trying to follow her fingers that were connecting the stars. “And there’s the Big Dipper!”
“Hm?” Kakashi can only attempt to make sense of what she’s saying and pointing at, not quite getting it.
Sakura stops for a moment, staring at him curiously, a sudden look of realization spreading over her face.
“You don’t know the constellations!” Sakura shouts, eyes crinkling when her laughs rings out in the empty street, not an ounce of teasing in her tone, just surprise.
“Well, I know the names,” Kakashi defends himself, not quite ready to admit he doesn’t know anything she’s pointing at.
“It’s fine,” Sakura replies, grasping his hand yanking him down the street as she breaks into a run. “I’ll teach you!”
Kakashi lets himself be tugged along but stops right before they pass by their apartment, digging his heels in but it’s not enough to throw Sakura off balance in the slightest.
“You should shower and change first,” he explains when Sakura huffs in protest. “And eat. I’ll cook for you,” he adds.
“I’m fine!” Sakura answers playfully but listens anyways. “Don’t burn down the kitchen!” she calls over her shoulder, throwing a over the top, concerned look at the kitchen and then him.
Kakashi groans, shuddering as the one time incident floods back into his mind from where he had buried it.
“It was one time!” he yells and Sakura cackles. “Gai’s not here right now!” he adds and Sakura only laughs harder.
Kakashi manages to make sure the smoke alarms don’t go off and by the time Sakura’s finished eating, it’s later than he likes but according to Sakura, it’s the perfect time to see all the stars in the sky.
“I have a mission tomorrow,” he grumps. “Tsunade will kill me if I’m late.”
Sakura’s putting the last of the dishes away and she pauses, her lips quirking up into a smirk.
“Aw, Kakashi-sensei, didn’t realize you were actually scared enough to care about your, ahem, habit that you never bother to fix.”
Kakashi glares at her, pulling on his mask, grabbing a blanket in case it gets chilly out.
“She’s scary,” he mutters and he almost automatically adds, ‘have you met the woman?’ but his brain works for once in its life and bites it off at the last moment before his mouth can land him a death sentence.
Sakura seems to know that and grins cheekily before grabbing his hand and yanking him along with enough force to pull his arm out of its socket.
“Oh well, we won’t be that long!”
“That’s what you always say.”
“The sky’s clear tonight, you don’t get many chances like this! And if you listen,” she pauses, throwing a exasperated look at him, “maybe you’ll learn faster, and then it will be quick!”
Kakashi snorts and glances away quickly when Sakura’s grip tightens, her smile dangerously sweet.
“Got something to say, Hatake?”
Her tone is deceptively calm, the one she uses with people when they have particularly riled her, and she is zero point five seconds from unleashing her wrath on them, or prepared to give them the quickest, but most painful treatment she is capable of.
A gulp and Kakashi replies, “No,” oh so very quietly because, he wants to be able to walk tomorrow.
Sakura beams.
Two hours later and it’s quite pleasant.
Sakura has taken them to a quiet spot that he hasn’t known about, a pleasant surprise and the bonus is, it’s far, far, far away from anyone.
He has a new hiding spot and he thinks he’ll be stealing it from Sakura when he needs a break from social life.
Technically, Kakashi has learned and memorized all the constellations within the first fifteen minutes because he’s not that dumb, but Sakura looks like she’s having so much fun that he doesn’t want to end it.
It has nothing to do with the fact that he wants to see how long it takes before she figures out he’s faking it.
None.
At all.
Okay, maybe a little.
“So, again, Big Dipper, Lupus-Hey!” Sakura punches him lightly in her terms, it might as well have been a hammer slamming into Kakashi’s arm but he manages to not make a noise. “Are you even listening?”
“Yes,” Kakashi lies, watching her stand up and loom over him, her eyes narrowed suspiciously, hair blowing in the slight breeze, her intimidating effect slightly ruined by her hitai-ate slipping down to cover one eye.
She quickly goes to push it back up and says, “You’re not!” with great conviction.
“Well there’s Leo,” Kakashi points, connecting the stars a lot slower than Sakura but connecting them nonetheless. “And then the Big Dipper. Virgo. Gemini. I am listening!” he rebuts firmly.
Sakura swats his head before plopping back down beside him, collapsing onto her back, rolling her eyes. Kakashi figures he’s won this round.
“What’s your favourite?” she asks after a bit of comfortable silence, stretching her arm out towards the sky, hand reaching upwards before it dropped back to her side.
“Hm,” Kakashi hums, tilting his head back and glancing at Sakura out of the corner of her eyes. “Let me see.”
Sakura props herself up on one arm and raises an eyebrow.
Kakashi notices how the moonlight falls on Sakura, her normally light pink hair appearing almost a silver with a touch of rose, green eyes reflecting a clear, turquoise colour, skin just barely glowing.
She’s beautiful.
“Aries,” Kakashi answers, connecting the stars with ease. “The best constellation there is.”
Sakura rolls onto her stomach, side eyeing Kakashi with a huff.
“You sap.”
“But you love it.”
“Do not,” Sakura shoots back cheerfully, knocking him to the ground.
“So do.”
“I know you have your Icha Icha Paradise book in your pouch, and I am not adverse to stealing it and burning it or somewhere along the lines of making sure it’s not readable anymore.”
Kakashi immediately shuts his mouth. Sakura doesn’t make idle threats, at least not towards him.
He’s had to learn the hard way.
For a while, he lays there, listening to the soft whisper of leaves a gently breeze blows through the trees, the quiet melody of crickets lulling him into a somewhat relaxed manner.
He’s well aware that it is way, way too late and past the time to even get a decent amount of sleep.
He’s going to late tomorrow and Tsunade will most definitely kill him.
Sakura chuckles softly, seeming to follow his train of thought and pats his shoulder apologetically. Kakashi shakes his head and pats her head gently, making her giggle.
Sakura sighs sleepily, her eyes fluttering shut every now and then as she struggles to keep them open.
It looks like she’ll fall asleep right there and then and Kakashi is going to have to carry her back to their apartment before her eyes snap open.
“A shooting star!” She’s wide awake, sitting up so fast that Kakashi is convinced she’ll get whiplash, one hand accidentally smacking Kakashi in the face, the other pointing excitedly at the sky. “Make a wish, Kakashi!”
Kakashi lazily tracks the shooting star until it falls out of sight, choosing not to make a comment.
Sakura spins around, her expression ecstatic, her expression a mix of Rin’s sternness and Obito’s enthusiasm.
“What did you wish for?” she asks, eyes wide with wonder before she winces.
“For my nose to stop bleeding,” Kakashi replies dryly as Sakura mutters a sheepish, “Oops,” and grabs a handkerchief, gingerly dabbing at the blood.
Kakashi pulls off his mask, letting Sakura clean off the blood and healing what little pain he feels.
“I’m really sorry,” Sakura apologizes.
Kakashi shrugs.
“Didn’t hurt that much. How about a kiss?” he inquires slyly and Sakura jerks away, immediately slapping the back of his head.
“Pervert,” she grumbles. “I’ll really break your nose if you try that again.”
“Gomen, gomen.”
Sakura huffs and curls up next to him, leaching off his body warmth.
Kakashi doesn’t protest.
He throws the blanket over them, too far down the road to dreamland to even consider moving.
Sakura’s almost asleep, her breaths slow and steady when asks, “Kakashi?”
“Hm?”
A loud yawn and then, “What did you really wish for?”
Kakashi opens one eye lazily and then shuts it.
“My wish? For you to be happy of course.”
Sakura laughs quietly.
“Kakashi.”
“Yeah?”
“You didn’t have to wish for that. I already am.” Kakashi smiled and curled his arms around her.
“A wish well spent regardless,” he announces, drifting in and out of unconsciousness.
“Sap,” Sakura concludes.
“Your sap.”
Sakura chuckles, the sound muffled by Kakashi’s chest.
They fall asleep, the constellations twinkling above them in the clear night sky.
Kakashi wakes up the next morning with rain pouring down on them and Sakura sneezing, the blanket doing little to help them as they sprint home.
Tsunade berates him up for being late and Kakashi has to spend the next week sneezing and taking medicine while Shikamaru and Ino snicker at him.
Still, as Kakashi glances at the sky each night, when he can see the constellations, he recites them each slowly and surely.
He’ll have them memorized by heart by the next time he sees Sakura.
