Game 3: Samurai Shodown! 2 Pocket Fighting Series (Jan 2023)
As much as SNK is good at making sprite art and making the most of their Neo Geo Pocket machine, there is just something off about Samurai Shodown! 2. I wouldn't call this game bad by any means, but there is a number of things holding it back that other Neo Geo Pocket Fighter games just don't have in common that is an oddity of itself and a testament to how many better fighter games their are on the Neo Geo Pocket. Samurai Shodown! 2 is by all means suppose to be a parody of the original Samurai Shodown series, meaning that the more lax dialogue, chibi art design, and moves are meant to more comedic than the original series. While I understand that Shodown! 2 is a continuation of that parody, the parody of itself kinda falls flat, save the sprite work. There just isn't a lot of dialogue, story, or moves that really scream parody to me, and at the same I was just kinda confused the whole time playing it. While most Neo Geo Fighters aren't that confusing, Shodown! 2 just did something with it's controls that never sat right with me. I understand that Samurai Shodown always had an odd fighting design of pressing certain buttons to do certain moves, but when you are on the Neo Geo Pocket and only realistically have 2 buttons to work with it, you start to limit your options. From either a different move coming out, the timing of moves not feeling right, or just registering being a problem, Shodown! 2 just doesn't have the control scheme that it clearly wants. I should also praise that at least Samurai Shodown! 2 has plenty of unlockables through the collectable cards that you get as you beat the game or fulfill certain objectives. I don't think any of the collectables are as fun to get as SNK Gals Fighter, but there is at least plenty to collect and use if you so desired. On top of that, a lot of the sprite work that isn't the main characters fighting are really good. This goes for portraits, backgrounds, and the few cutscenes scattered in the game. Regrettably, I don't think Samurai Shodown! 2 is worth anyone's time. There is nothing really that bad with the game aside from some confusing controls and an inoffensive soundtrack. Everything else it has presentation wise adds a lot of charm to it, but I just don't see people going to this particular game when there are simply better offers on even the Neo Geo Pocket itself. Absolutely average game that is sadly overshadowed by nearly every other Neo Geo Fighter out there.

Lazarus Water is a special water to Ghosts. Not for drinking, but more for like...baptism. Into servitude.
Anyone who has been dunked in Lazarus Water is bound by soul contracts to serve the Ghost King, whoever it is.
The more someone has been dunked, the more binding the contracts.
Jason and Bruce? They would have to be given a direct order.
Damian? A side-minded mention would force his body to comply with the Ghost King's wishes.
Ra's? Ra's is screwed.
Because the Ghost King is now a fourteen year old boy, and Ra's has been dunked so many times that all said boy has to do is think and the Demon Head is scrambling to comply.
Danny doesn't know what he did to have ninjas at his beck and call, but they're really taking the workload off of his shoulders by fighting his rogues when he has homework to do or sleep to catch, so he's very okay with all of it.

Tbh CC, I don't think MC is still in love with the brothers after everything that's happened,,, thinking about it, it feels more and more like MC is just putting up with the brothers and taking care of them rather than loving them
Imagine MC admitting their love for the brothers died a long time ago and now they're just here to keep things in check, what do you think would happen?
Oh hey Lucifer, bringing me the angst today I see! Ouchies!
I think it probably depends on the MC involved. Generic OM MC is highly tolerant, slightly crazy, and somehow insanely resilient. They've definitely been through a lot and I think it's interesting to note that they have never once had any kind of emotional breakdown. They've had little outbursts here and there, but that's about it.
I think part of this is due to the story format. We've got a situation where MC is a character that doesn't say or do much. They're very reactionary in general.
But if we consider how this same story might go if it was a specific MC, one who was a fully fleshed out character, things can change dramatically. And there is absolutely a chance that MC could fall out of love with the brothers or even not fall in love with them to begin with.
It's kinda funny because I have a preference for the side characters in general and I think it's because they don't need MC to take care of them. The brothers are all very demanding and don't like when MC isn't with them all the time. But the side characters have their own stuff going on and are independent. They're all still hopelessly in love with MC, but they don't rely on MC the same way the brothers do.
But let's consider the scenario where one day MC has reached their limit. They don't explode or anything, but they quietly admit that their love has died and they only stick around out of obligation.
The thing about this is that I think all the brothers would have picked up on it before this moment, but some of them wouldn't know what was happening and others would. For instance, I see Lucifer and Asmo just sorta being like yeah we expected this. Whereas Mammon and Levi would be like okay we knew something was up, but we didn't think it was this!
I think at that point, the brothers would do all they could to change things. They can all be idiots and they get carried away and often cause MC more stress than anything. But I think if they knew how MC felt, that they were feeling this way, they would try to change.
It might not work. These demons are old and old people are often set in their ways. It might be hard for them to change. Then again, they were also created to live as long as they do, so perhaps they're better at adapting than humans are. Maybe they would find it isn't so hard for them to make the changes they need to in order to have MC be more comfortable again.
The problem is that even if they succeed in changing their behaviors, that doesn't mean MC will love them again. No matter what the brothers do, MC won't be able to make themselves love again. It's not impossible, but it's not something that's predictable, either.
I think part of the solution would be MC spending time away from them. Whether that's staying in the Devildom, but living somewhere else such as the castle or Purgatory Hall or going back to the human world, I think it would require some time apart.
I think a lot of times people fall out of love because they change in different directions. So if MC has changed, but the brothers haven't, that could be the cause. It could be that MC and the brothers have both changed, but differently enough that they no longer have that same chemistry from before. And sometimes you just can't fix it.
MC would have to make their choice at that point. If they all spent some time apart, then the brothers actively tried to change, but MC still finds that they aren't in love with them anymore, then MC has to decide. They have to decide if it's worth spending the rest of their life taking care of a bunch of demons who have already managed to survive a long time without them and who will likely live on far after they're gone. If MC is still mortal, they may decide they don't have time for that. Maybe they'll permanently move in to the castle or Purgatory Hall. I think that has a lot of angst potential because they'd still see the brothers a lot, but it'd be like there go my seven exes lol.
Ahhh it's such a sad scenario! And there are a lot of ways it could go, depending on the MC involved. My MC is more likely to lose their shit way before it ever got to this point so I can't even imagine it with them lol. But a quieter MC who feels the responsibility of being everything the demons expect them to be might certainly stick around long enough.
Anyway, this is getting lengthy, but I think it'd be a difficult time for all if this happened. The brothers might try to fix things, but I think in the end everybody would want MC to make the right choice for themselves.

"I've been skipping two of the most important character POVs since the first book, am I missing anything?"
Tumblr media
Honestly though, this is taking me out because I just know this is how a lot of people actually "read" the books. At this point the books have been discussed so much people just assume they know enough to skip through certain parts and that's exactly why we have so much misinterpretation in this fandom. People are getting their information through second-hand sources instead of the books themselves 😭

no but actually. the parallels to other Twins in different nations of teyvat in relation to the traveler and their desire to reunite with their own sibling makes me a little bit bonkers. like.
diluc and kaeya as what the traveler has and fears, after we will be reunited [separation born from conflict that seemingly cannot be mended; they both care for each other but ultimately their opposing ideals mean they cannot be at each other's side in the same way that they used to, and no longer have the close bond they once did]
ei and makoto as what the abyss sibling experienced [a crushing loss not just of one's twin but the last remaining friend they had and the safety and security of their nation, coming out the other side traumatized, cold and jaded and making decisions that will ultimately hurt the people they claim to want to protect for the sake of an unattainable goal]
and lyney and lynette as what the traveler and the abyss twin used to have before they were separated [never apart for long, home is wherever we are together], what the traveler wants [their separation brief and quickly amended, continuing to be inseparable after they reunite], and also the choice they'll have to make [the twins being together in an organization the traveler inherently doesn't trust - does the traveler want to be by their sibling's side badly enough to throw their lot in with the abyss, and turn their back on everyone else they've met on their journey so far?]
#personal stuff#thorn plays genshin#RIPS AND TEARS.#hi . feeling so normal btw#i was thinking so so so so hard about the traveler twins when ei's second story quest dropped#and i am constantly sick in the head about the traveler being tired of the ragbros nonsense communication#and THEN in fontaine the traveler having to watch these two twins who are incredibly close.#and try not to think about what they've lost#i'm. uuaauguugh#LIKE#the traveler and the abyss twin really are what the fontaine twins could be if either of them lost the other.#at the end of his story quest lyney talks about how both of them give each other strength to get through the darkest days#and how darkness never consumes him because he has his sister and they remember the good things together [punches the ground]#also lyney and lynette losing their trust in people early on and having to lie to everyone around them#and getting the companionship that kaeya never got in his childhood. cries#like he had his twin!!! he had his brother!!! but he had to lie to him for years and never felt truly understood until that night#and AUUUGH the running theme of one twin being Light and the other being Dark#one always brightly engaging with people while the other deals with matters from the shadows#and the brothers flipping that on its head when diluc returns to mondstadt - diluc in the shadows and kaeya with the knights#and ei getting someone who will be her shadow so she can finally step into the light herself and see the world with her own eyes.#just AUUGUUGHGH. i'm fine. i'm normal#this is incoherent maybe but augh. augh. siblings.#[looking back at the earth] wait the game is about family? always has been

I think it is quite funny that Jaime becomes disillusioned with chivalric *violence* because of his dealings with Aerys and the whole system around him, so throws himself into a chivalric *love* with Cersei to cope (ie. He is forced to love her from a distance, being the Lancelot to her Guinevere.)
In AFFC, his faith in chivalric love *also* collapses, when he is forced to reckon with the fact that the type of chivalric love he has been indulging in leaves him alienated and distant from his beloved, and it means he doesn’t really know her in any meaningful way. Idolising “the lady” is just projection, not genuine love.
Enter Brienne. His dealings with her allow him to reframe both violence and love, because she embodies both the ideals of a genuine knightly protector and a lover who he can know completely, inside and out. I’m very interested to see where GRRM takes this in TWOW (if he ever does, of course).
yeah heavily idealistic chivalric values/codes clashing with the actual reality of chivalric violence/chivalric love/chivalry and gender and misogyny specifically and just knighthood as an institution in general is such a key tension in the text and i am also excited to see how it will continue to develop with him and brienne (the female true knight). i just love how knighthood is deconstructed and then reconstructed and how the two of them are at the center of the theme ig

cannot fucking imagine applying a “the customer is always right” capitalist hellscape mindset to “the audience is always right” when audiences are as varied as anything else. just say you’re a boot licker to your own sense of edgy superiority amplified by your lack of media literacy and the fact your ‘hot takes’ don’t get traction and go.

Her name was “Strawberrybirdmon” (really) and she didn’t have any special role in the community, she was just a designated “baby” and lived with one of the toy families as the other digimon delegated as babies did. Her special digimon power was that “basking in her presence” could make anything you cooked/baked taste really sweet, so any time someone in the toy kingdom wanted to bake something they’d comically go knock on the family’s door and ask if they could touch the baby. The running gag was that the family had a slew of ridiculous excuses why you couldn’t come in, and you had to come up with an equally ridiculous reason to debunk the excuse.

I was looking directly at a reference while drawing these and I still somehow convinced myself he had long hair. Whatever, he's pretty.
A-Z Isekai'd Cress deign by @acfan120 really got me in some kinda way and I couldn't help wanting to draw him. I also have thoughts on story for him but I'm not gonna be annoying with that rn. Maybe someday.
Bonus my warmup doodle:

Did error try to take cross's soul in the R&R universe? I know theres a lot of diversion from underverse but I cant remember if youve mentioned that or not
He did! It didn't go his way-- Nightmare got involved.
It's part of what made him agree to go with him in the first place, because Cross (and Chara, at the time) couldn't risk another attack while Nightmare's back was turned. Ink hung out sometimes, too, and he'd met Dream, but... Error wouldn't leave the world alone for long. They both knew that it was only a matter of time until their empty world was erased, and they could choose to be in it or not when it happened. They chose not.
XTale largely happens the same way, but that's where the canon similarities end. because Cross didn't have to go bouncing across the multiverse to create the X Event, a lot of Underverse doesn't happen. Instead, Nightmare took him around to stir up trouble in about 25-30 worlds (to prove his capability and willingness to follow orders, as well as get him used to the kind of work he'd be doing) before separating him and Chara, sending Chara to the Omega Timeline, and severing both of their connections to XTale, and by proxy, XGaster.
Cross was the newest recruit before R&R took place, but he's been with the gang probably close to 3 1/2 - 4 years, where everyone else is around 5 or a little better. Dream stole him for a little bit to try and "save" him from Nightmare and his influence, but... realized that Cross was not doing as well with him. He needed structure and a purpose, and while running around playing bodyguard for Dream gave him a small amount of peace... Dream could tell he was still worried and always watching his back. His anxiety and paranoia weren't going to go away, so he waited for his brother and the others to show up before 'returning' Cross (basically, said 'I wanted to give him a chance, but I think he'll do better with you, anyway,' thanked Cross for accompanying him, and left.) Nightmare, while angry with his brother, was not angry with Cross, and in fact, encouraged him to freely talk about his experiences in the very long debriefing in his office that followed. This helped cement Cross' loyalty to Nightmare, but the guys weren't as accepting. They got better over time, and can work wonderfully as a team, but that animosity lingered between him and Killer until the events of the story.
Cross is still not allowed to go into battle against Dream and the other two unaccompanied because Nightmare thinks Dream might try to steal him again, using Killer's dislike as leverage. This changes post-story.
Also, Cross tagged along with Dream after he and Ink's fight, so that he wasn't meandering the multiverse by himself.
