From that one ask, how did Athens treat Theseus??? Is it kind of like the same way they (supposedly, because idk shit) treated Ares in comparison to Athena???? Am I misunderstanding something?😭

Hahaha sort of, except Theseus is the Athena of this story.

I think around 6th century the hero worship of Theseus experienced a politically-driven revival in an effort to create a national identity for Athens and bring the people together. He was a hero who then matured and became King - that’s a pretty nice story for governments to use to their advantage. Like how governments now can use a locally-born celebrity to advertise for them. It’s that kind of thing.

Athens is one of the few places in the ancient Greek world that Theseus was more popular than even Herakles because of how well they propped him up.

Not to say Theseus isn’t deserving! He is a hero. But a lot of manipulation of myth went on for a while there.

Yeah they poop on their legs to stay cool! They're also pooping all over the ground behind my house where they're roosting in the trees lol. But they're dropping a bunch of feathers right now so I've been able to collect some that I plan on using in some crafts once I sterilize them

AN INTERVIEW WITH DUNDAS LITTLE THEATRE’S MATTHEW WILLSON, DIRECTOR OF “THE HUMANS”

I had the pleasure of a virtual interview with Dundas Little Theatre’s Matthew Willson who will be directing the first of their 2022-2023 season with his vision of The Humans, a Tony Award winning play by Stephen Karem. The Humans tells the story of the quintessential family reunion: a group of people who love each other but still wrestle with basic human fears: old age, abandonment, poverty, and death. Matthew shared insights on his inspiration for set, combating the ongoing challenges of illness during production and the anticipation of bringing this piece to Dundas in a few short weeks!

THE INTERVIEW:

SCG: What inspired your company to produce this show? What inspires you generally when directing shows?

MW: I had approached The Players’ Guild about producing it, but they went in another direction. My wife and I saw the play in New York a handful of years ago now. I am certainly glad Dundas Little Theatre chose it as part of their season.  As for “what inspires me when directing” - I need to feel inspired long before I start rehearsals.  I’m really inspired by the cast and the crew. When creating a production, all levels of the team need to be equally invested. I’m lucky to have this group right now.

SCG: Dundas Little Theatre is no stranger to impressive set designs for their productions. Describe your vision for the set in "The Humans" and how it has influenced or changed the direction of this show.

MW: From day one I pressed the importance of this set for this piece. It is, perhaps, the main character. Designing the set was a pretty cool process for us involved. John Bello, David Faulkner-Rundle and I designed it right there on the theatre floor during a 12 minute meeting. We used a tape measure and some tape and an old donut bag to draw on.

It was an odd process, but the set is really evolving!

SCG: What have been some challenges in bringing your show to life and how have you overcome them?

MW: Like any artistic project, problems always arise. We’ve had to make cast changes, a COVID scare and for the first time in my life, I became sick… I spent more than a week in hospital and I’m adjusting to new beginnings and medication as I write this piece.

SCG: What has been rewarding about directing this play?

MW:  So far, its been a reward for me to even get to go to rehearsal. This is a very cool and raw piece of material and the way that we’re approaching it and our interpretation of it , I feel is going to go over well. Our cast and crew are building the entire production each rehearsal. And every rehearsal takes an incredible amount of focus. The performers are pretty tired afterwards. I told them at our first pre production meeting that on opening night, they'd be like athletes performing this one.

SCG: For those unfamiliar with "The Humans," how will this show speak to audiences in the Hamilton area or audiences in general?

MW: I am not sure that I’m I can properly convey the entire premise of this story, but I do know this: the play “The Humans” is holding a mirror to our society…
