there is a weird sort of comfort i find in any/all/most of jon and martins more lighthearted or loving conversations never being caught on tape... like imo the eye is totally uncaring of any of jons feelings that it cant use to help itself, it doesnt deem it as important and therefore whnever they say i love you to each other its never in front of a tape recorder which is. GOOD yeah but it adds a layer of sort of privacy and protection to it ??? because like there is no way during the whole of s5/the safehouse period neither did anything romantic for each other, no matter how small. but like im almost happier we dont get to see it because i feel like it makes it a lot more intimate??? like . its a THEM thing. were not meant to see it. the affection they hold for each other isnt meant for the benefit nor the viewing of others. it definitely separates thwm from everything/everyone else a little since they are the only two able to see each other at their most vunerable but idk i think its kinda nice. like they reserve all of this only for one another idk i think its sweet (adds a bit of normality into their lives too yk like they can kiss and whatnot without needing to be reminded of doom looming over them) and i mean id say both of them are generally pretty closed off?? like we know jon is HORRIBLE with expressing his feelings and while martin is more encouraging of jon doing so hes still not an open book (or at least i think so idk) . so i think its nice that when in love theres still this like. air of mystery around it. ESPECIALLY since they both already are shown to find comfort in solitude in like kind of a ritualistic way imo??? like jon always records his statements alone and ik part of it is martin not wanting to hear them but like in the safehouse he doesnt really seem scared and his main reason genuinely seems to be that jon wants to read them alone. martin also records his poetry alone! he has one of his biggest reflective sessions alone! twice! ik this is a little different to what i was talking about at the beginning of the post cause its caught on tape but still i hope it kinda makes sense and still connects??? idk i just think its really sweet how aware they are of the space they both need while also having such strong feelings for each other . privacy is such a big thing for them!! i never wanna see them on tape again!!

Almost all the episodes have him in them and its still not enough. vaguely see something that reminds me of him and I black out and lose my train of thought for the next 20 minutes

Ok OK. SO. i had an idea.

Jon, but instead of just being marked by the fears he gets an “ability” from each, the eyepocalypse required all the fears together so instead of a person marked by them all they created a single vessel of fear, shared among them.

Jon holding on to the tape recorders not because the web places them there but because they are his. Of course he still doesn’t know the bigger plan but they’re his. Tapes and his. Manipulations. People ask him if he knows what’s listening and instead of being confused he simply says he is

After the prentiss incident theres about a handful of worms still around but he starts regarding them as friends, he keeps them in a little terrarium in his office MUCH to Tim’s frustration and Martins worry

After he gets marked by the hunt by Daisy he’s technically already “hunting” first in order to stop the unknowing and after his victims so that barely needs change

I can’t think of ways for the others to manifest right now but like think about it. Jon as an avatar of ALL the fears, it already ties into his arc with loss of humanity except even more so because there’s never been anyone else quite so far into it

i have a lot of thoughts about ep 7 of the magnus protocol, so here are a few observations :D

[spoilers for TMA and TMAGP ep 7]

ever since Celia was first introduced ive been wondering how much she remembers/knows... she mentioned tape recorders, asked if theres anything tying the read out statementy together, then mentioned looking up specific things and gave these examples "buried alive" and "meat" - two TMA fears. and SHE RECOGNISES "CHESTER"'S VOICE!!

then immediately after that we hear a recording of Sam asking Colin about an email from "John/Jon *random surname*"?? Colin telling him "wait until you see the real stuff", and before breaking Sam's phone "it's already recorder [too much]". HE KNOWS THAT THEY ARE BEING RECORDED! HOW MUCH DOES HE KNOW!?!

and the statement itself is also quite interesting. they mention hilltop in oxford!! they were doing charity work and that immediately reminded me of the halfway home run by raymond fielding, which could be considered charity work as well. the items that the "volunteers" donated all seemed like artifacts to me. maybe they were trying to create a warehouse of sorts, similarly how breekon and hope worked as delivery men for various entities

unfortunately i cant see how this episode would fit into the "desire theory". i cant see any desire there, maybe the volunteers desired doing something "for a good cause"? i dont know :((

*kicks open door after listening to episode 60 *

ITS ELIAS

Based on all the little scraps I got from spoilers cause I was too curious and impatient, along with the clues Im getting now, I just know its that fricking sus british man (Elias, not Jon).

For one, because of the spoilers I only know that Elias is revealed to be evil later, that his name is Jonah and that he can assumingly watch and know things about others. Keep in mind thats all the facts I have. I dont have the hows or the whys to give me enough dots to smoothly connect Elias to all these cases of people being watched from Jon to Gertrude to the man from the Crusader episode to the woman in this episode.

Theres probably more but my memory is crap (I should really start making a map with red string and notecards but I dont have enough room).

Now I could be wrong because someone (or more likely something) could've killed Gertrude, but my guess is leaning hard on Elias.

Idk what those papers were about though. The ones the lady in ep. 60 had thrown away or smth and replaced the cargo with petrol that was absolutely going to the Magnus Institute. However in on of the animatics I watched that had spoilers galore (see: "Martin's arson asmr" on youtube) Elias was very adamant that Martin didnt burn any more statements and went to harsh lengths to make sure Martin didnt.

Idk whats going on with that the same way I dont know why the tape recorder in THAT video seemed sentient or smth. Maybe in order to read their minds or watch them, they have to have a statement in the Archives, but that doesnt make too much sense seeing as how the man from the Crusader episode hadn't put in a statement and he felt the feeling of being watched just as much as the others, and Jon felt like that before he gave his own statement after episode 39.

i have like such a strong hunch that the recorders really are just a part of jon but i have nothing to back up the confidence i have in said hunch other than I Really Feel It

okay i was thinking about the nature of the tapes as part of the web and how they just pop up when important things happen, but it’s never really discussed what happens to them after they’re done right? and like georgie really gave it her all to destroy that one, i can’t remember but i don’t think jon mentioned them disappearing the same as they appear (correct me if i'm wrong). i think that means that following the spontaneous recording, these tapes just exist somewhere. i’d like to think the tape is left behind and the recorder disappears, to be disposed of or just left alone

maybe the tapes had previously been thrown in the garbage, but who knows if they were actually destroyed or if they’re just spread across a landfill, still playable. that’s all pre apocalypse of course, cause theres no place to throw them away after. so when they pop up during the apocalypse martin and jon just leave them behind marking wherever they’ve been. and since there was that one last tape that the girls found in the rubble, they obviously continued to exist after the fears left, so IM SAYING jon and martin left a physical trail of tapes stretching from scotland to london that now actually resembles somewhat of a straight line

what if people find the trail of tapes and document the findings online. there’s an entire reddit page dedicated to finding these weird tapes and piecing together who jon and martin were. then they find the ones with niche podcast celebrity georgie barker and disgraced paranormal youtuber melanie king and there’s a huge conspiracy. i like the in-universe memes for after the apocalypse, but realistically no one would know who the archivist was unless they met him (which very few people actually did who didnt know him before, and even fewer survived) and no one at all would know or recognize martin. all they would know about the apocalypse is what they can piece together with the tapes they find and, i assume, whatever they nag out of georgie and melanie

maybe the podcast is the final product of the reddit page after they’ve gathered every tape they can find, assuming the archive fire and collapse couldn’t actually destroy the tapes. i like the idea that a sort of true crime-esk fandom came together over this to really scour the continent for tapes, and that people broke into the site of the collapsed institute after dark to dig through rubble in torchlight, then collected the tapes and brought them home. maybe the statements themselves couldnt be recorded digitally but recordings of the tapes could since it's a secondary source, and thats why we can listen to it but still hear the wrrr of the tapes. maybe theres even lost tapes that were never found, most likely just important conversations between characters and no actual statements, that were displaced to the bottom of the ocean or something. the lost tapes could be the patreon exclusive fluff episodes

i don’t really have a solid note to end this on, just that it’s a plausible connection between us as the audience and canon. we could be the world they left behind

Jon is literally the archives AU

- Jon’s statements are scattered, his shelves are falling apart, theres absolutely no filing system, and several rare documents are being treated very poorly.

- Martin is the Archivist, and he is gonna fix the place up. He finds it tragic that its in such a state, and has also done quite a lot of research on what he’s meant to do, bc, you know

- Jon dislikes him bc he clearly has no clue, coming in and sort his files chronologically with no regard to the fears

- Jon also distrusts Martin’s dilligence, because the last Archivist, Gertrude, did worse by him the more she figured out, and eventually tried to burn him down.

- Yes this contradicts his general annoyance tgat Martin doesn’t know about the fears. The former is his way of ignoring how terrified he is.

- anyway, So hes kind of subconsciously trying to keep Martin from learning anything useful mostly just by generally being a dick.

- files go missing, Martin gets lost in the stacks no matter how sure he is he’s memorized the layout. Other stuff too but its 1am and i cannot think of anything else.

- jon can talk via tape recorders but he’s giving martin the silent treatment (cuz hes scared)

- anyway its def a slow burn, but shit goes down when Martin gets kidnapped by some avatar or other. Maybe Jane, but maybe im a little sick of that station of canon

- in any case Jon has to suffer a week or so w/o Martin and suddenly realizes that actually he cares.

- up to this point, Martin has been developing this like, fond annoyance with Jon, the same way you feel about the old falling apart car you learned to drive in.

- but as jon starts to reciprocate and reveal himself, it transitions quite naturally into the fond annoyance we tend to refer to as “old married couple vibes”

- it is very important to me the jon doesn’t have a human form in this au. Martin will marry his place of work, and it will be glorious.

- tim and sasha can be there too ig, mostly to tease Martin about this

- at some point, avatars attack, and jon gets to show off just how much of a death trap he can be if he really means it

- their first meeting is definitely still Martin letting in a dog.

due to my desire to not completely fail all my classes this year i made myself slow down significantly while listening to this season, and the fact that the other person i'm listening along with had to catch up. We've managed to convert several other people to start listening and its pretty great.

ep 81: what does it even mean to be chosen by one of them? And if he was chosen by the eye. we know Gertrude wasnt? Because she cut the eyes out of the magazines?

ep 82: elias lmao. I understand why people like him so much bahshdhdk i thought he was gonna snitch on Jon but he didnt so he's fine. Ok but how do we think he knew all that stuff. Idk probably just institute connections. I love the fact that the recorder just wants to record stuff randomly bjahsjdhd. Elias feels a lot like Michael in the sense that he knows more than he should and talks in a way that implies he just wants to wait and see how things play out for his own benefit. I understand him knowing the things that happened but his description of her emotions implies something paranormal. Maybe he's connected to one of the entities. Which one I cannot guess.

ep 83: did a file get delivered randomly to the place he's staying at? Probably elias lmao. He thinks the mannequin is related to the stranger. Idk I would believe it.

ep 84: worms? I know he says earth worms but idk. Again? Is she making gordon golems out of trash? Martin popping off. You can tell the statements get to him more that they get to Jon. How come martin is so mad about it? I want to assume he just doesnt want her to get stuck there but idk. Jude Perry. The calliope organ. Jon heard a circus in one of the last episodes

Elias ur sounding like a bit of a dickhead rn. lmao jon's just like "i dont care" elias what is ur deal. Why does he want to tie her in. ohh i see. lmao theyre all just like "elias why" The Unknowing lol seems very much like something the eye wouldnt like. lol elias is gettin all philosophical. what does it really mean to be human. this still doesnt answer why gertrude wanted to destroy the archives tho.

ep 93: bahsjdfh he seems so dead inside rip. awww admiral. i love him already. ghh breacon and hope. purple mold. doesnt sound like anything we've seen so far. I think the funniest explanation for breacon and hope is that they dont actually serve the stranger they just kinda happen to be a random neutral party that cart around random spooky entity related stuff. ooooh. when we hear the slight static of the tape recorder it's cuz he's compelling ppl.

ep 94: the end! listen man they were all just grayed up for 4/13.

ep 95: the end also? death but also savagery/ animalistic shit. aww martin. lmao becerra. she's just been chillin in the corner.

ok im just putting this here so i have notes for when nicholas gets to this part. It seems like (from jon's conversation with jude perry) that the desolation and the eye are kinda at odds with eachother? like i guess not directly but it seems like they dont really vibe? so how could be with both. Cuz if he has the heat powers and shit then we know he's an avatar of the desolation. but then why does he have so much eye imagery. also he got burned intentionally? like jude did when she went on her monologue about the feeling of burning? but then why did he wear the eye pendant. it stops him from being burned all the way which seems like he's not fully accepting the fire or whatever.

ep 108: melanie has been suffering. poor martin peter lukas why do you have to be like this. can he not just use the front door? does he have to bother the ppl doing statements?

ep 109: how come he cut her off? kinda rude tbh. its either jon's influence or there was smth he didnt want her saying. is it gerard on the table? this sounds kinda like smth from one of the university episodes. is it the closed eye on the hand? yup. he's like one of the students! if the thing listening in is elias then... he can do that without the tape recorder yknow. plus who's to say it wont just turn itself on again
