How to keep yourself safe from fear mongering and misinformation.

I know there's a lot of fear mongering out there, which feeds on misinformation and the common anxieties of those who have (or suspect they have) a disorder such as DID/OSDD.

The first rule is of course, do not trust anyone on the internet.

This includes me.

Fear mongering is when someone spreads fear and/or terror. Usually with a hidden agenda, but it can also be spread by those who don't know any better and who have been caught up in the fear. If someone is describing a terrifying situation (especially one that starts out seeming fine, but gradually becomes scarier and scarier until it reaches dystopian proportions), it is likely that it is just a fear mongering tactic. An example of fear mongering is "Gay marriage will lead to adults marrying children!". It usually involves multiple steps, which start out with a grain of truth, but twist the facts or use false equivalencies to make it seem as though their worst-case scenario is a real danger. The aim of fear mongering in this example is to convince people to vote against marriage equality. Inspiring fear in a person can also be used to scam that person. How many times have you heard of someone getting an official-sounding phone call which tells them they will be arrested if they don’t send such-and-such amount of money to them, or if they don’t purchase giftcards and give the codes to the scammer on the phone? It is the initial shock and fear which cause a person to fall for these. Fact checking is vital.

Fear mongering.

- Take a moment to overcome your initial emotional response. You need to be able to think clearly and logically when you are confronted with something that shocks and scares you.  - Try to think about their argument/statement rationally and objectively. Is it likely that in this day and age a therapist would illegally force a treatment on you without informing you of all of the facts about that treatment? Would a mental health professional risk a lawsuit and the loss of their licence by refusing to answer your questions about a treatment that they are insisting on? - Check for sources, and it is very important that you not only READ their sources, but also look for other sources by yourself. The source/s supplied by a fear mongerer will often support their statements and seem fairly convincing, but actually contain very little fact. You need to do an independent search for information which supports their claims, and information which contradicts their claims. If there is no truth to their claims, you will struggle to find reputable sources which support it, and are likely to find many that have evidence showing that the claim is false. (There is of course the chance that something is true but does not have sources for it - eg 50 years ago, there may not have been many official sources supporting the idea that being gay is fine, and there would have been many official sources claiming that being gay was a disease.)

Do not take any one person's word as fact.

- Check for reliable sources that back their statements.

- Look for multiple opinions/input, from a variety of sources. It's no good asking 10 people in the same group for their opinions and then taking it as fact if they all agree. If you are searching for information, you need to take everyone's advice/input/opinion with a grain of salt, and seek a wide variety of people to ask.

- If someone claims that such-and-such is the ONLY possible way to experience something, you should look into why they are claiming that, and what reliable sources they have to back it up.

- If something is really a fact, there will be SEVERAL reliable sources discussing it. Not just one source being reblogged or referenced by multiple other sources.

Check sources.

- Look at whether the person is actually linking the direct source of their "facts" or not. If they are simply claiming that such-and-such says this, or vaguely indicating that a certain government or organisation supports their view... That's not good enough. You will have to actually research it yourself and see whether that is the case or not.

- Be cautious if someone has quoted something but does not tell you where the quote comes from.

- Look at the full quote, not just the part that the person has quoted in their post/statement. It can be easy to take things out of context, and make it seem like the source supports a certain view, when in reality it does not.

- Actually open the links if someone is citing them as a source that supports their statement. It's very easy to assume that because someone has cited multiple sources, that those sources are accurate and relevant. But in reality, it would be quite easy to simply link a bunch of random official-sounding URLs, that actually have nothing to do with it.

Check credentials.

- If someone is claiming to be a therapist, scientist, or anyone working in a medical field, you should not believe them unless you are seeing them in a professional capacity IRL.

- You are

ALWAYS

entitled to see the qualifications of someone who is treating you, whether it is your GP or a mental health professional.

- If someone online is claiming to be a trained mental health professional, but is not treating you in an official arrangement, they should not be giving you in-depth advice or diagnosis.

A mental health professional should always get to know you and your background before giving you advice. THEY WILL NEVER ATTEMPT TO TREAT YOU OR DIAGNOSE YOU WITHOUT ENTERING INTO A FORMAL PATIENT-THERAPIST ARRANGEMENT.

Seek a trusted person to help you fact check if you are having difficulties.

A lot of sources may contain heavily jargoned text, especially when discussing medical conditions/disorders.

Find someone who you know you can trust, and who is willing to admit when they are mistaken. Ask that person to help you.

DO NOT TRUST ANYONE WHO REFUSES TO ADMIT THEIR MISTAKES.

- Watch out for people using gaslighting tactics, or deleting conflicting opinions from their posts. There are some people out there who insist that they are correct, and will refuse to acknowledge any information which contradicts their statements. These people may use gaslighting techniques to supress anyone who tries to question what they've said.

- Any one who is working from a place of good intent, will be open to looking at reliable sources which contradict their statements.

- Similarly, if anyone tries to convince you that you DON’T need to check their sources, or that you can trust them without them providing sources, THIS IS A RED FLAG.

Is it ok to test someone?

In my opinion, when you are searching for accurate information, it is perfectly acceptable to test someone by asking them something you already know the answer to.

For example, when I went to the endocrinologist to talk about HRT, I asked her my most important question and she responded in a way that didn't match what my doctor had said.

So I tested her by asking a question I KNEW the answer to.

She answered incorrectly, and I knew that I would have to work hard to get accurate information out of her.

My Hopes and Wants for the new Masters of the Universe series

So in approximately less then 12 hours(if Netflix still follows its "release a new series at 3am" mandate) Masters of the Universe: Revelations is set to premiere on Netflix. While I am still a bit upset about the recent reveal I can't help but feel that I'll be going into another shitshow-reboot that started off with great potential but ended up going to trash. And this is based off going to youtube for Godzilla videos and music and seeing reviewers and vloggers practically all say the same thing.

Lets get one thing straight before all of you jump down my throat. I've been a MotU fan since I was a 2 in the 1984. I had bedspreads,pillow covers, books, toys, pajamas/underwear, even a homemade muscle suit that my mother found the pattern to make at a fabric shop for Halloween one year. So know that when I say I had high hopes for this series from the moment it was announced it's the truth.

Even when it was revealed that when Netflix released it's synapses, and the drama behind the scenes with some youtube vloggers and Kevin Smith over the past group of months I still had hope it would be one of the very few reboots that surpasses the original like 2002s He-Man series, the 2011 ThunderCats, 2012 TMNT series (which could have had a better ending IMO).

I wasn't even upset when it was revealed that King Greyskull and Andra were what people call today "race-bent." Andra was never really that important in the MotU universe only appearing once or twice in the comic strips and again in Injustice vs Masters of the Universe. As for King Greyskull, I grew to accept because of, well my own family. Looking at my family (Aunt who identifies as black gave birth to a daughter who is biracial who then had 3 blond hair blue-eyed kids) so I am taking this as a win for biracial/mixed blood rep.

I even like most of the cast and crew that I recognize with the exception of one, but I never really liked the actress from the 90s. I am talking about Sarah Michelle Gellar. I never liked her as Buffy or any other role she was in. Some may say that makes me bias towards Teela, but you are wrong.

I've always loved the character Teela. Because she is the Sorceress' daughter she has always been Prince Adam/He-Man's equal both in the previous series and comics. Even though she seemed like she was a tsundere towards Adam because she has to even after learning who he is (in the comics), she was always been He-Man's version of what Lois Lane is to Superman, or Abby Arcane is to Swamp Thing, she was his rock - his light in the darkness.

I am still a bit pissed about the Orko thing, but I explain my reasons in one of my previous posts - so I won't go into that.

The purpose of this post on the eve of the series being released is to voice my hopes and wants for it.

1.) Lets get the big one out of the way - Representation. I want representation, (because God forbid there be a series without it these days) to be natural and not the focus or feel forced. Believe me being a mixed-race person who is part Native/White/Black I get it more than anyone gives me credit.

Growing up Star Trek from 1966-2016 was the king of natural representation. Where unless the episode's story called for it NO ONE CARED about race/gender/ or one's orientation.

2.) Developed Story Well developed story that makes you feel like the show-runners have a plan from start to finish. That means a well thought out story, developed characters, what are their contingency plans if no one likes the series, what are their plans if the series is received? It needs to leave you wanting more!

3.) Let the villains be villains! Enough with the frigging "redemption" arcs! A redemption arc worked for Zuko in the Avatar series because of his character development. But ever since A:TLA, it seems every villain needs to have a redemption arc. Characters like Zarkon, Haggar, Lotor, HORDAK who is practically the Darkseid/Thanos of the MotU universe doesn't need a redemption arc or a "happy ending." In the MotU universe genocidal threats like Skeletor and Hordak raise the stakes for the heroes and drive them to win. Evil-Lyn does not need a redemption arc she has ALWAYS been Skeletor's equivalent to the Sorceress.

4.) Fans need to respect each other unlike when Voltron and She-Ra were playing. People are entitled to their own opinions whether they are new fans or old-timers like myself. If we don't like the way a series is going we are allowed to voice our opinions whether it congeals to someone else's opinions or not. Keep in mind that many of us have kept series like Voltron, She-Ra, TMNT, ThunderCats, and many other 1980s cartoon series going for the better part of 40 years for you to watch and enjoy these newer series. Our opinions mater just as much as yours.

5.) If you truly want to support this new series, and MotU as a whole buy official merch to the series. Like it was when we were young, getting the official merch helps the series more than you would expect. Now I am not saying don't support fellow fans who make trinkets and cosplay outfits and so-forth. Just keep in mind if there is a demand for officially licenced merch it can and will help the series.

These are my hopes and wants for the new series. I am still holding out on hope that the critics and vloggers are wrong on Masters of the Universe: Revelations lives up to the original series while being original itself as it has been advertised as when others (see below) with the exception of 3 did not, it has a a Godzilla sized mountain to climb to impress me. But know this when I see this series I will give my honest opinion of it, whether people like it or not.

Romania

* Every minor gets a monthly allowance from the state until they turn 18. * Textbooks are free.

Portugal * In 2000 Portugal decriminalized ALL drugs. College Essentials

It is easy to know what we need for college, but sometimes it is easier to binge on buying a lot of stuff that we end up not using. These are my necessary stuff that I carry to campus & lectures for staying organized and focused. 

- It may seem obvious that we need something where to put our things, but truth is you’ll see a lot of people that go with just a piece of paper and a pencil to their classes. As tempting as this practice can get, don’t learn the hard way; it simply doesn’t work for organized people as you will want to carry a planner so you don’t forget to log important dates. Whether to buy an actual backpack or a purse it is up to you, but choose wisely as you will be entitled to it an entire semester or even some years. If you know you will carry a considerable amount of things and you want to find them quickly, I would recommend a legit backpack. There are a lot of cute fashionable ones out there that doesn’t necessarily look like school ones.

Whether you study from your raw notes or you like to re write them neatly, you need something where to copy what you learn in class from the professors. I like to only have a multiple-subjects notebook for lectures so I can have everything in just one place and save paper. If you cannot study from messy notes or you just like a little more of organization then it is best to have a notebook per subject. It is also a very good idea to have loose paper and have a binder or folder to carry them. Remember you can also take notes on electronic devices. You can always give it a try, but bear in mind it is not for everybody, so don’t feel bad if you cannot keep up with that system.

Although I use the backpack’s pockets to carry all my loose materials, a case or pouch is usually a lot handier. Now, no matter how much you love colored pens and lots of highlighter, there is no time for cute notes in lectures. Just bring your favorite pens or pencils because you’ll have time to add color coded comments later after class. Don’t forget to bring an eraser! For STEM courses a calculator is always needed. Copying stuff down without practicing or understanding the process costs you more time when studying so use your calculator in class and take the time to understand it.

A bujo, organizer, planner, handmade calendars, printables, phone’s notepad... no matter what it is, but bring something else that you can constantly check to write and accommodate what is coming up and what you need to do, like exams dates, homework, or even extracurricular compromises. And again, don’t forget to constantly check it please.

It may not be that needed for class, but If you’re the kind of person that likes to study in the library or in different places than your home, always carry your laptop or tablet so you don’t end up forgetting it at home. and can take advantage of your free time.

The rest of the items depend on your special needs. For example, mine are:

Umbrella - if you study in a rainy place like I do, there is no excuse for not bringing a small umbrella. You will need it, please don’t forget it.

Wallet - I’ve heard of people that leave their wallet at home/apt to save a little money, but as tempting as it may be, don’t. Thats always important to carry around because we never know what can happen and there are important docs like driving licence, health insurance card, student id, and of course, money.

Hand sanitizer - you can find a lot of disgusting situations and bathrooms so clean your hands after those and before eating.

I thought of doing a college essentials for when studying home, but as not everyone learns the same way I decided it may not be that useful. All I can say is, try to identify your learning method(s) as early as you can, it will save you a lot of headaches and mental breakdowns. If you have any doubt about college I can answer based on my experience (I’ve been living this promising nightmare for 3 years already haha)

Starting out as a Childminder

Childminding is not as easy as it may seem thinking about it. I decided to become a childminder after having my second baby, because i wanted to go back to work and after becomming a mum it is very difficult to find a job to fit around your schedule. 

below i have listed the pros and cons of becomming a childminder. 

Pros:

Can work the times and days you want 

Can charge what you like 

Can spend more time with your own children 

Cons: 

You have to stick to ratios and include your own children

You have to consider child care on sick days and won’t be paid for them

Your home will not feel your own 

It's exhausting

Like any other job there will be good days and bad days. Some days you will love your job and some days you will be stressed and cannot wait for theday to end. Childminding is very unappreciated in some aspects and we don’t always get the thanks that we deserve. You need to be organised, prepared, and patient. And remember that your not on your own. there are always people to talk to when you need to ask questions or have a rant. 

To set up your business there are a lot of steps to take and it is a vey timely process ranging from 1-2 years. 

Childminders care for children on a domestic premesis this would usually beyour own home. 

You need your qualification. You can take a course specifically in childminding or take a level 3 course (1 year) which is the one i took. Keep your options open, if you take the level 3 you can use this to go into a nursery if you was to change your mind. 

You need to apply to go on thechild care register, which there are two of: 

The Early Years Register is compulsory for you if you are planning on caring for young children (until the child has reached the end of the reception year in school)

The Childcare Register has 2 parts:

The Compulsory part of the Childcare Register is for you if you are planning on caring for children aged 5-7 years.

The Voluntary part of the Childcare Register is for childminders caring only for children over 8 years.

You don't have to apply with Ofsted if you are only looking after children over the age of 8, look after children less than 2 hours a day, are the child's parent/guardian, care for children in their own home, babysitting between 6pm and 2am, only tutoring.

i applied for both, because i offered holiday care i could look after children of school age as well. 

If you live in a rented property:

If you live in rented accomodation you need to check with the terms of your rental/leasehold agreement to see if you are allowed to operate a childminding business from home. You will certainly need your landlords/leaseholders written permission.

There may be a clause in the agreement that states you can't operate a business from the house, but the landlord/leasholder can change this clause if they choose to. Sometimes a proffessional conversation explaining the registration requirements, risk assessing etc. alongside what insurances are in place can help a landlord/leaseholder to see that there isn’t an huge increased risk to allowing a person to childmind from the property. It is recommended that you discuss this directly with the landlord/leaseholder and not their agent.

If there is a mortgage on the property, there may be a clause that says a business can’t be run from the property, but childminding businesses are often looked at slightly differently to any other business and may excluded from this.

There is tenants insurance for fixtures and fittings that a childminder can purchase to help reassure a landlord/leasholder their property is covered by insurance and allay any fears about extra damage to the property.

If you are allowed to childmind from the property, expect to provide any extra safety equipment needed such as fire blanket, stair gates etc. yourself and make good any fixing holes etc. before you move out.

If the landlord/leaseholder still insists you can't childmind from their property, there is nothing else you can do as it is their choice whether they allow childminding or not.

Once you have done all of the above you will then need to: 

Do a child protection course (you can do this online, some councils like you to have this done face to face aswel. But i went by what Ofsted advised and only done mine online) Refresher every 6 months.

Do a safeguarding course (online) Refresher every 3-6 months.  

Food safety and Hygene Level 1 course (online) 

Female Genital Mutilation Course (online) Refresher every 6 months. 

Some of these courses cost (£20-£40) it’s worth looking around for the best price and that you get a certificate once completed. 

be registered on the Early Years Register and/or the Childcare Register. (£35) for under 5′s. And (£104) for 5-7 years. 

hold an up to date paediatric first aid certificate. To renew every 3 years (around £90)

Be on Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checked. Find out more information (£52.10, anyone over 16 who lives or works with you needs a DBS). Update service is not a requirement anymore but costs £13 per year if you choose to do this (handy if you want to go into a nursery). This could take a few months to complete.

You also need your documents checked by a professional or if the post office check them this costs around £10.50.

You will need to show the professional your ID documents, like a:

passport

driving licence

utility bills

bank statement

Get your Health deceleration booklet filled in by your doctor (£35) Do this asap, this could take a few weeks to get done. Download the form here:  https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/become-a-childcare-provider-health-declaration Email and post to Ofsted. Always keep a copy as they tend to lose it.  [email protected] 

complete a childcare course (£250-£400)

Pacey Membership (£59.50)

have appropriate insurance cover, including Public Liability Insurance. (£28.90) with Pacey, but haeto be a member. 

ICO registration (must have for data protection) (£40)

Deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage for children on the Early Years Register. Keep upto date with the Early Years Foundation Stage 

Let your local council know. give them a call find out who deals with childminders in your area. 

Have your policies and procedures in place. Do not necesarrily need them printed but kept on a computer when needed. I use Twinkl for this as they have them all. Always double check them to make sure they are up to date and have allthe relevant information. 

Ofsted will come out to you to do an audit, make sure you have everything you need and test your knowledge. This could take 2-5 hours nd will mark you Met or Not Met. All inspectors are different and have there own way of doing things.

Utility bills (last 3 months, showing address)

3 planned activities covering all areas (Ofsted will tell you the age ranges you are required to cover) - Good actiivities that cover all areas are, Playdough, sensory baskets, sand and water play. 

Know the EYFS from the back of your hand. 

Doing a SEF is not a requirement anymore, but always worth having so you are prepared and can go back on your notes if you need to. 

Childminder First Aid box

Accident and Incidents, Medical procedures 

Procedure for Lost child on outings (Emergency cards, alert staff etc)  

Keeping parents upto date with day to day routines and activities (Diaries, newsletters, meetings)

You cannot start childminding until you have recieved your certificate from Ofsted.

I just drank two five hour energies, speaking of energy. That’s—that’s certainly something. It’s not healthy, but it’s where I’m at today. We are all allowed to have off days. That’s a thing. My off days mean that I’m gonna inhale energy drinks like my life depends on it, so. Boom. I’m the epitome of health. The very paragon of humanity at its finest.

That’s a joke. I promise. I—I’m just having an off week. I let myself have one of those per month, now, and it’s working great. I’m doing great. So great.

My life is going okay, I think? I’m--I’ve obviously been very stressed in the past week, but overall, stuff’s going okay! We’re kinda understaffed, which is rough, because people are actually coming in more, now, but, hey, I get it! It’s cool!

Uh. I got a boating licence? For all boat-related needs. I don’t own a boat--I’m not made of money--but I have the option now, y’know? Gotta keep those options out there. If you can’t do everything, what’s the point? I gotta prepare for my whims. Gotta predict what’s next, and, look, I’m unpredictable, so. A walking contradiction, that’s me, like I’m some sort of bad 90s alt-rock lyric. Some sort of manic pixie dream dude. I have the glasses for it and everything. I could pull that off. If there’s no intrigue, there’s no point, right? Right. Flash is important, in the long run. Gotta make an impact, gotta make a statement, or else, you’re insignificant to history. Well. Not insignificant. Plenty of quiet people are significant. But—Look. Listen.

I misspoke. I mean—

There’s no such thing as insignificance, I don’t think? Because—ripple effect. Step on a butterfly. Right? Every action is important re: the fate of the universe and humanity and also everything else, but I feel like that’s implied already, so. So, like, we already had to be significant to this. But we never got that Why Us answer, and I don’t even know how to expand the question further than just those two words, Why Us.

It’s not the existential Why Us, either it���s the very literal Why Us that I’m asking, but it’s just—

I want that answer. I care about that answer. I need to know! We all need to know—I don’t care if it’s cosmic necessity or wrong place right time or right place wrong time or whatever, I care about knowing. I’m a big fan of knowing. Really big fan of it. I’m just—overwhelmed by normal life, underwhelmed by mystery-hunting life, and I want the vice-versa. Yeah? Yeah. Want to drown in the cool shit and breathe in the boring shit. That’s my whole thing. My whole deal. That’s balance, that place between drowning and hyperventilation. But I wanna tilt the scales a bit toward drowning, cuz I’m an adrenaline junkie.

And I—I think I’m entitled to know it. We’re all entitled to know it; it’s something about us that we’re missing. Something that we’re not asking for whatever reason. We gotta dig deeper. Gotta figure out our role, and then we gotta play it. Method act. You know?

You know.

So. That’s—this isn’t really a grab bag, but I’m too all over the place to come up with a better title, so.

So. How do I even end this? I—I don’t have bullet points for this part. I really don’t. I should’ve written them down as I went along with, uh, stuff that I needed to get back to, but I didn’t, and I gotta reconsider that for the future, but. Hey, nobody’s perfect. I’m certainly not. Again, off day. Off off off day. My brain is in eight-nine different places right now. Some of it’s on Mars, I think. I think about Mars a lot, but that’s not what I’m getting at.

We have to keep asking questions. I’m not a leader by any means—you guys can’t really be led regardless of who’s in charge. I can’t be led, I can’t lead. We’re a pretty chaotic group, and I love that. I love this dynamic a lot. It’s good. It works, for all the ways it shouldn’t.

But—we have to. We need to drive ourselves to understand. That’s—that’s bad wording, but you know what I mean. You don’t need total clarity to get my gist.

Time stopped again this morning. And it stopped last night, and it’ll stop again soon, and again, and again, and again, and again—

We’re background players, but so’s everyone, in the context of every story. Why don’t we try and change that? Something else is clearly trying to make us more important. I think that whatever that something is has a point.

So. Boom. I guess. There’s my conclusion. There’s my big fancy bow on top of the box, the—the point. My whole damn gist.

I don’t have a good sign off. I wish that we could have one, though, that would be—very fun. But, again, chaotic group, works for all the ways it shouldn’t. Can’t be consistent. Gotta surprise each other constantly. That’s—that’s good.

So let’s use that dynamic for all of its power and solve this mystery. These mysteries. These—everythings.

Ex-football star almost totally blind: Dave Thomas talks about being plunged into darkness | Football | Sport

Near the top of the list is tending to his beloved garden. Daft as it sounds, I still cut the grass,” says the former England international footballer. “I’ve got a machine I sit on, but I’ve had some major accidents and lacerations.” He laughs: “Well, you can imagine! I’ve ridden into branches, all sorts.” Eventually, his wife Brenda came up with an ingenious solution. “She bought me a chainsaw helmet, with the visor and ear-muffs. I tell you, that has saved me.” Fans of a certain vintage will remember Thomas. A speedy, industrious winger who played with his socks rolled down and his heart on his sleeve, he achieved success with Burnley, QPR and Everton during the 1970s.

Capped eight times for England, he was a good, honest pro: two rungs above journeyman, one below superstar. He still has many friends in the football world, including Harry Redknapp who will guest at the launch of his new autobiography, Guiding Me Home And Away. Thomas holds the record as the youngest player to start for Burnley in the old First Division, at 16 years and 220 days but now he is a different kind of pioneer: the first top flight footballer to be registered blind.

Offering a warm welcome to his beautiful home in the Durham countryside, the 68-year-old, is lean, tanned and very fit looking. The dark glasses he wears indoors are the only outward sign that he suffers from a disability.

He has been active all his life. A successful playing career left him financially secure, but after retirement in 1984 he continued to work part-time, first as a gardener, then as a PE teacher.

The first inkling that there was a problem with his eyesight came at the age of 50, while he was working in a school.

“My father went totally blind in the end with glaucoma, and he told me to get my eyes tested – so I did. The optician said he needed to get me to a specialist straight away. That’s how it all started.”

Thomas was diagnosed with severe glaucoma, and from there it was a steady decline. In 2003 the DVLA revoked his driver’s licence, and in 2008 he was registered blind. He retains some central vision but can see nothing on the margins. “Having no peripheral sight is just awful,” he sighs. “Like a horse with blinkers on. It’s bloody frustrating.”

Slowly, he learned to walk with a cane, but it was the arrival of his guide dog, Hannah, in 2017, that was the transformation. The four-year old Labrador is his ticket to an independent life. Off duty, she resembles any other mischievous pooch: while we talk, she barks for her ball and hoovers up shortbread crumbs from the carpet.

But as soon as she dons her harness, she gains superpowers. Before her arrival, Thomas found being in large crowds a frightening experience. Now, he thinks nothing of getting on the bus, or catching the train to London and hopping on the Underground.

“She’s a cracking lass,” he says, with tears in his eyes. “I’m so proud of her. She’s playful, but when she’s in work mode, it’s like turning a tap on. Put on that harness and she’s off!” They are one of 4,800 guide dog couples in the UK. The training is painstaking, ensuring that the pair link up as effectively as any Premier League strike partnership.

Thomas can’t overstate how much he relies on her. Recently, Hannah was ill and he had to attend a talk in nearby Barnard Castle without her. Before going on stage, he experienced an anxiety attack.

“It was bloody awful,” he says. “I went in and said to my friend I needed to go to the toilet. It was a psychological thing, to get myself together.”

He glances down at Hannah, snoozing at our feet. “You don’t realise how important they are. God forbid the day she’s not there.” Like all guide dogs, Hannah will be retired when she is 10, after which Thomas will have the opportunity to keep her as a pet and join the waiting list for another working dog.

The public are generally helpful, although on a recent trip to Windermere, Thomas, Hannah and Brenda were refused admission to a restaurant which cited a No Dogs policy.

Guide dogs are legally entitled to entry under the 2010 Equality Act, but Hannah was allowed in only after Thomas had argued with the front of house staff and summoned the manager.

“I’m the kind of person that would have stayed there until they shut,” he says. “I said, ‘You either let me in, or I’ll ring and I’ll report you.’ They need to know, don’t they? They won’t forget that again!”

Having lived all over England during his playing days, Thomas and Brenda have

settled in their native North-east, a couple of miles from where they first met, in 1970, at a pub in the neighbouring village of Cotherstone.

Their converted cottage is situated in the former walled garden of Lartington Hall estate. French doors open on to landscaped lawns and hedges, with glorious views over the countryside.

Since moving here in 2010, the cottage has become a kind of sanctuary. “It’s the happiest place,” says Thomas. “Idyllic, really.” He gestures around his living room.

“In here, I’m very happy. Reading’s not too bad, and I can see my telly, just about.” Outside, he remains admirably self-sufficient. As well as cutting the grass, he runs every morning, plays golf – “I can see the ball when I’m standing over it, but I can’t see the bloody thing once I’ve hit it!” – and pops into Barnard Castle on the bus most Mondays. The local community, he says, is very supportive.

Although he strives to stay positive, Thomas admits to getting “very emotional. I don’t know why, maybe it’s the fear of total sight loss”. Contemplating the impact his condition has had on his wife and their two adult daughters, Helen and Polly, he struggles to get the words out.

“They’ve never said that it has affected their lives, but I’m sure it has,” he says, weeping. “Brenda has been a gem, and I’ve got two cracking girls.”

Nowadays, much of his time is spent fundraising for Guide Dogs for the Blind. He has drummed up £75,000 and royalties from the book will go to the cause.

It puts in perspective for him bad publicity associated with modern football. “I lost faith in people in football, I didn’t want anything to do with it,” he says. “I love the game, always will, but there’s too many dishonest people, and too much money. I’ve seen people change, with this ego business. What really annoys me is the players who drink drive, or who’ve been in a nightclub fighting. VIPs? They’re just footballers!” As for the future, he is prepared for the darkness, but would rather focus on the light. “There will be someone today getting worse news,” he says, and smiles. “My eyes are buggered, but I can cope. The grass won’t cut itself, will it?”

BRUTAL ATTACK –The mother of a child who suffered a brutal beating that left her unconscious at the side of the road dreads returning the teenager to the school where her attackers remain. And Marcia Carrington, an active Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) member, said she also fears her own actions after hearing the account of how the schoolchildren stood on her daughter’s neck and kicked her in her head on Wednesday while she headed to the bus stop outside the Lester Vaughan School. The beat down came to light after a video on social media showed the teenager fleeing her attackers and narrowly escaping being struck by a van along Cane Garden Road, St Thomas. After the attack Carrington paid $500 in medical bills for X-rays and medication and is struggling to get $840 for a CAT scan.  (WN)

SIBLINGS CHARGED WITH ATTACKING MAN GET BAIL - Two brothers were granted bail today when they appeared in court charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.  Shamar Andre Rock, 30, and Brandon Ricardo Rock, 16, of Shorey Village, St Andrew are accused of attacking 25-year-old Jamar Green. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. yesterday at Shorey Village. Police say Green visited the area to watch a football match and afterward, he encountered the brothers on his way to the bus stop. The Rocks allegedly attacked Green and tied him to a pole. The matter was reported to the police and they found Green tied when they arrived. A video of Green being tied to the pole was circulated via social media. Brandon and Shamar appeared before Magistrate Ian Weekes in the District “D” Magistrates’ Court and they will reappear on May 22.  (WN)

Man arrested during stop-and-search remanded - A man accused of using indecent and insulting language to police officers was remanded to HMP Dodds today. Twenty-five-year-old Darius Kenrick Bowen of #47A, Sanddunes Drive, Sandy Hill, St Philip appeared in the District “C” Magistrates’ Court today before Chief Magistrate Christopher Birch and was remanded to prison until May 22. The alleged offences were committed yesterday along Grove Road, St Philip during a stop-and-search by members of the Tactical Response Unit of the Royal Barbados Police Force. (WN)

SENT UP THEN RELEASED - A young man, who was seen being searched and arrested by police on a cellphone video on Wednesday, was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison at Dodds yesterday after pleading guilty to using indecent language. But quick work by his attorneys saw Darius Bourne being released from the St Philip facility just after 8 o’clock last night, after spending just over six hours. And now, a former president of the Bar Association, Andrew Pilgrim, is bemoaning the way in which Barbadians are still being remanded for simple matters like using indecent language, or being in possession of small quantities of drugs. Bourne, 25, of Sandy Hill, St Philip, appeared before Chief Magistrate Christopher Birch at the District “C” Magistrates’ Court in St Matthias, Christ Church, yesterday as a result of the altercation with police, and was remanded to Dodds until Monday. MAN FACING WOUNDING CHARGE – Police have charged a 31-year-old man with wounding with intent. Jamar Adday Hall of Lot 11D Walkabout Path, Eden Lodge, St Michael, allegedly wounded 35-year-old Kidwe McCollin, at Block 4C, Church Drive, Eden Lodge, St Michael, on April 7. Yesterday, Hall, who was the subject of a wanted bulletin, surrendered himself to police accompanied by an attorney. He appeared before Magistrate Cuffy-Sargeant in the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court today. He pleaded not guilty to the offence and was granted bail in the sum of $10 000 with two sureties, and will return to court on July 21. (WN)

POLICE ACCUSED OF BULLYING TAXI-DRIVER & PASSENGER – There will be no investigation into an allegation of police mistreatment of a taxi operator and his passenger if the aggrieved operator fails to file a written complaint against the law enforcement officers concerned. Assistant Commissioner of Police Erwin Boyce told Barbados TODAY the Royal Barbados Police Force would not act unless there was an official protest to the Police Complaints Authority. The taxi driver, who requested anonymity, said the officers had acted unprofessionally when they stopped him yesterday and demanded to search his vehicle. The entire episode was filmed and posted to Facebook, but the video has since been removed from the social media site. Boyce said if the driver felt his rights had been abused he should bring it to the attention of the proper authorities in the approved manner. In encouraging the driver to report the issue, Boyce said police were allowed to stop and search vehicles at their discretion, but they should state the reason for the search. “You can’t legislate procedure on the road. They speak to the person who is driving and they wave the level of suspicion as to why they are stopping the vehicle. If they are doing vehicle stops they let you know they are doing vehicle stops and they want to see your driver’s licence and insurance and road tax and so on. If there is suspicion that there is contraband in the vehicle and it’s enough to create suspicion, then they can ask the driver of the vehicle who is in charge of the vehicle, to permit a consented search and a search can be done,” the policeman explained.  (BT)

JUDGMENT RESERVED IN POLICE PROMOTIONS CASE – The Court of Appeal Thursday reserved judgment in the case of 14 police officers who are claiming that were bypassed for promotions within the Royal Barbados Police Force five years ago. However, even as the panel of judges led by Chief Justice Sir Marston Gibson weigh their decision, the lawmen’s attorney is already recommending how they should rule. In passionate submissions, during which has was asked to use less emotive language, Queens Counsel Ralph Thorne asked the Court to reverse the decision of the Police Service Commission (PSC) and promote the officers, two of whom have since retired. Thorne argued that there could be “no doubt” that in a matter of such high publicity over the last five years that the public was entitled to believe that there was some “major deficit” with the service records of the officers that disqualified them for promotion. Therefore, he pleaded with the court to “render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s”.    In his three-hour long presentation in the No.1 Supreme Court Thursday morning, Thorne made submissions on 16 of 18 grounds of appeal. The other two grounds were argued on March 22. The officers are challenging last December’s ruling by Justice Margaret Reifer, who upheld the PSC’s decision to remove their names from the 2012 promotions list, and instead inserted alternative names, without further reference to the then Commissioner of Police. Thorne charged that the principles of fairness, transparency and justice were not followed by the PSC as stated under the Public Service Act 2007 when it took its “unlawful” decision. (WN)

LANDLORD’S FAULT - Laws that govern landlord/tenant conflicts are “clear”.  An attorney at law said the fault was at the landlord should any tenant overstay their welcome for an extended period of time, as there were procedures in place to have them removed. “Most of the time, people don’t know exactly what they have to do, either they are not following through or they are doing the ejectment wrong. I think it is really the tardiness of the landlord to allow someone to stay so long without receiving payment,” he said. Take the case of Sandra Walkes, who found herself unable to pay her bills because her tenant had refused to pay rent for three months or to move out despite being served two eviction notices. Her situation got to the point where she considered changing locks and there were contentious confrontations between her tenant and her children. She finally went to the police and consulted an attorney. (WN)

DANGEROUS ROAD! NUPW WARNS GOVT NOT TO TAKE A CAPITALIST APPROACH – Ahead of the May 30 National Budget presentation, the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) has sounded a stern warning to Government that the island’s public servants are already at the point of saturation. Therefore, the union says, now is not the time to be piling on any more taxes on Government workers, who it also described as overburdened. He further cautioned that the very social fabric that has held the society together stood to be destroyed, with some workers now faced with a choice of “feeding their families, buying medication or paying their commitment for their shelter” and already vulnerable to corruption. The NUPW leader was reacting to recent comments made by the Chairman of the Barbados Private Sector Association Charles Herbert, who was also a member of the Fiscal Deficit Committee recently convened by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to advise him on the way forward for the floundering economy. With this in mind, the NUPW agrees that urgent remedial action is needed. However, it is adamant that the burden of austerity must be equally spread around. While acknowledging that streamlining and rationalization could bring about needed savings and that spending cuts must be made, McDowall further warned Government against going down the road of profit making at the sacrifice of workers, saying it would only yield deleterious results. INCOME GAP GROWS - Income inequality IN Barbados is heading in the wrong direction. That’s the conclusion of new research by a Guyanese economist, who linked the trend to increasing wealth generated through the international business and financial services sector. Collin Constantine is a development economist who is a PhD student in economics at Kingston University London. Last month, he released the working paper A Community Divided: Top Incomes In CARICOM Member States and found that “Barbados is clearly the best performer is terms of rising inequality”. Constantine’s research covered the period 1960 to 2015. He noted that traditionally the region’s relatively high inequality countries were Belize, Suriname, Guyana, Jamaica and Haiti. Barbados has usually been among the relatively low inequality countries that include Trinidad and Tobago, The Bahamas and St Lucia. However, the economist found that “in the Barbados case, top incomes have steadily increased since the 1970s”. Put differently, he explained, “the middle class in Barbados has been shrinking”. Despite this, Barbados still had the lowest level of income inequality among CARICOM member states during the 1980s. Constantine said this had changed and Barbados was “rapidly converging to its high inequality peers”.  (WN)

KELLMAN CHIDES GOVT OVER AIRBNB – Businessman and Minister of Housing Denis Kellman is warning his own Government it can no longer ignore the importance of the increasingly lucrative online marketplace, Airbnb, to the Barbados economy. Kellman, the Member of Parliament for St Lucy, said a disservice was being done to the economy by not measuring the contribution the homestay programme was making to gross domestic product. The global accommodation facilitator has said that some 1,100 Barbadian homeowners had listed their properties on its website, each earning an average of US$3,900 a year. Two per cent of long-stay visitors to the island – some 16,000 people – stayed in Airbnb listed properties last year, a company official said recently.    Kellman sees the online community marketplace as an avenue through which ordinary Barbadians can contribute to the tourism sector, in very much the same way they helped grow the sugar industry. The Airbnb hosts here last week launched the Barbados Entrepreneurship & Tourism Association to advocate on their behalf. Founder of the non-profit organization Neeraj Vensimal said it was important for them to have a voice so they could make an input into pending legislation and other developments relating to the tourism sector. MCCLEAN STRESSES NEED FOR CARICOM UNITY – The present and future global environment demands that the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) engage in a process of “evaluation, revision and consolidation”. This advice was given by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean, while addressing the opening ceremony of the Twentieth Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR), at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, this morning. Senator McClean, the incoming Chairman of COFCOR, told her fellow Ministers of Foreign Affairs: “It is imperative that we deepen and strengthen community engagement and, as a cohesive body, leverage our voices as one to derive maximum benefit for the region”. She stressed that recent political developments in the hemisphere and Europe involving long-term CARICOM partners would likely have “a profound impact” on the region. (WN)

HEAR US PLEASE – A group of Venezuelan women living here attempted to crash the meeting of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) foreign ministers Thursday, to highlight their opposition to the embattled president, Nicolas Maduro. Members of the Civil Society of Venezuelans in Barbados gathered outside the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre at about noon Thursday, the opening day of the 20th meeting of the CARICOM Council for Foreign and Community Relations, to protest against the economic situation in their homeland and Maduro’s refusal to hold overdue elections. However, the demonstration was short-lived as they were quickly ushered off the compound by police and security personnel because they did not have a permit to protest.  (BT)

FORMER DLP CANDIDATE RUNNING AS INDEPENDENT - Three-time Democratic Labour Party candidate for St Joseph Randall Rouse has announced he will be contesting the next General Election as an independent candidate.  Rouse made this disclosure earlier this morning during a press conference at his Airy Hill, St Joseph constituency office.  "The decision I make today comes out of total frustration with this government as it relates to its lack of communication with the public on public matters, lack of leadership, lack of clear explanations for some of the policy decisions taken, the apparent anti-worker stances taken and more especially, this government's total refusal to accept positive economic advice even from its own economic advisors in the economy," Rouse said.  The now independent candidate said he had several concerns with the representation in St Joseph, but chief of these were the lack of adequate transport, the poor conditions of the bridge at Melvin's Hill and the inadequate healthcare facilities across the parish. NATIONAL DISGRACE – The Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) spokesman on transportation is demanding a “credible and functional” plan from Government to increase the number of buses on the roads and bring relief to the travelling public. Former Chairman of the Transport Board Ian Gooding-Edghill complained in a recent statement that the state-run bus system had become a “national disgrace and embarrassment” and the Freundel Stuart administration did not appear to have a plan to remedy the situation. The BLP St Michael West Central candidate charged the current administration was mismanaging the transport agency, spending over $108 million on maintenance with little to show for it. The Opposition politician, who lost the seat by 193 votes to James Paul of the governing Democratic Labour Party in 2013, said the shortage of buses, compounded by financial problems, had been going on for much too long and Barbadians were the ones suffering as a result. He contended that not since the early 1990s had the Transport Board been in such a “deplorable” position. (BT)

ST. THOMAS DANGER ZONE - The people living and driving through the Shop Hill to Duke’s area and beyond are crying out for relief. There are blind corners, narrow roads, a sunken bridge, bush hindering eyesight and a lack of sidewalks and people are frustrated with this true danger zone where many people have lost their lives. One life lost in particular, 17-year-old Anyica Yearwood who was killed in 2010, is still fresh in many people’s minds. She was dragged by a vehicle which had struck her while she was waiting at a bus stop along Shop Hill. Armintha Headley lives near the area where that tragedy occurred. She said it was still dangerous there. (WN)

EX MANAGER FUMES AT SANDALS – A FORMER SANDALS BARBADOS employee is accusing her old workplace of giving her the runaround. Renée Ally, the hotel’s former landscape manager, said she was dismissed in June 2016 and almost a year later was still in limbo regarding a proper compensation package. “I had been there for about 23 months before I was dismissed. They claimed it was my performance but I never had any write-ups or disciplinary action against me on file so I don’t know why,” she said. “I went to the Labour office to state my case as I knew I had been unfairly dismissed and I wanted compensation.” (WN)

MALLALIEU ON THE MOVE – Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF) president Andrew Mallalieu is facing a busy few weeks of travelling as he attends three of the next six races on the Grand Prix calendar as an FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) steward. And his continuing commitment to the work of the world governing body reflects well on the BMF, and on the island, one of the smallest nations affiliated to the FIA. Mallalieu will officiate as a Formula 1 steward at the Austrian GP on July 9, and also, for the first time, as F2 steward, in Monaco (May 27) and Hungary (July 30). In addition to his work as a steward, Mallalieu has been a member of the Rallies Commission, representing North America and the Caribbean, since 2010, a position he was invited to take up by the then-new FIA President Jean Todt, who was keen to involve more younger delegates. He is also a director of NACAM, which encompasses 14 FIA-affiliated countries in the region. (WN)

COVERS SNAG – There is a crisis with the covering of pitches in the Barbados Cricket Association’s (BCA) major competitions because of old and inadequate covers. Shrewsbury + Care workers sought to work in new children’s home near Oswestry

An advert for the new roles

Shropshire Council is on the lookout for people interested in working in a new children’s home that is set to open near Oswestry in the coming weeks.

The home is one of two being opened by the council this year to increase the provision of accommodation for local ‘looked-after’ children in the council’s care – helping to prevent them from having to move out of the county, and enabling the council to better support them.

The first new home – near Shrewsbury – opened in February 2020.

Vacancies are available now for residential care shift leaders and residential care workers in the new home – as well as in the council’s three other children’s homes.

Sonya Miller, Shropshire Councils’ interim assistant director forchildren’s social care and safeguarding, said:

 “We’re proud of our employees and the services that we provide for children in Shropshire – particularly at this challenging time – and hope to continue to provide high quality care for more of Shropshire’s children and young people.

“We’re seeking people who are passionate about improving lives of some of the most vulnerable children and young people in looked after care and can show understanding, compassion and empathy whilst providing a high-quality of care.”

The council is opening the new homes to provide accommodation for children within the county, which is becoming increasingly difficult to find. The aim is to improve choice for Shropshire children and young people and help reduce the need for, and costs of, external residential placements.

Ed Potter, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for children’s services, said:

“These new homes will enable us to better meet the needs of our looked-after children by providing additional accommodation within the county. This will lead to a wide range of benefits for the children, our staff and the council. Children will be closer to home, staff won’t need to travel long distances to visit them, and the council can provide much better care for these children, especially those with complex needs, improving their life chances so that they can develop into responsible Shropshire residents.”
