okey dokey! i just finished the fallout show! some Thoughts under the read more
tl:dr, the (bethesda) fallout vibes were definitely there. i liked it as a show on its own merits but as a part of the series canon... i'm mad, and that anger is kind of overriding the little i liked about it. overall maybe 2.5/5 stars and im being generous
things i liked:
visually, it's stunning - i could see scenes already being made into gifsets - the color grading is pretty good; even in dark scenes i could see and understand what was happening
the sets are soooo good!! costume design was alright too
title cards were fun and cute
they did some interesting stuff with the cultures of both vault 33 and the brotherhood of steel
they used the sound effects from the games :)
i liked the wastelanders!!! big npc and random encounter energy. i kind of want a whole show of just them. for example i love the marketplace and settlement in filly; it feels very lived in
the background characters weren't just young thin able-bodied conventionally attractive white people :) there's so many elders, which i loved!! ma june and barv were cool. i love gruff old lesbians
lucy!!! she was already kind of weird and a little off-putting even in vault 33 ("what's your sperm count" as an opener to the husband she was just arranged married to is WILD) and i like that. she's sweet and bullheaded and surprisingly competent :)
maximus is kind of an ass, but is also a pathetic nerd and brotherhood dickrider who actually doesn't really know anything. kind of a girlfailure
the ghoul was pretty cool too!! i liked him, though more for his prewar story than the one he has post-apocalypse
lucy's brother norman kinda grew on me. "i lack enthusiasm for every job that i do here" so relateable. also short king <3
THE DENTIST THAT BUYS TEETH. never thought that would be a Thing but now that i think about it, it makes sense
the monsters that we have were cool!! wish there had been more of them
MATT BERRY IS IN THIS!! i just really like him so i got excited :))
maximus and lucy's "wanna have sex?" talk LMAO
vault 4's various mutations!!
those giant unwieldy fuckass duffel bags that brotherhood squires lug around hahahhahahaaha
vault 4 and its genetic experiments because its main conceit is that it was ruled by scientists who hybridized humans. it's exactly the right amount of fucked up i want in a vault
i like that the protagonists regularly get captured and eat shit
FRED ARMISEN IS ALSO HERE
haha hacking minigame :) also chatting via terminals (and im assuming pipboys?) is canon now
they're growing crops in the wasteland + bustling trade + livestock + pets yay
robobrain was cute
things i was just ok with:
dane, the they/them brotherhood of steel aspirant who was fucked over so maximus can get their spot as a squire LMAO what a waste of a potentially cool character
IT'S SO FUNNY that there's yodelling whenever the ghoul comes into the scene ????? WHY
fight scenes.... pretty good but someone definitely had the bloody mess perk (i don't do well with gore so ew yucky). also lots of [VATS NOISE]
pipboy was not used as much as i thought it would be
cousin stuff... i get it, i guess in a vault you'd have a lot of cousins and not a lot of choice, so some incest would probably happen
the ghoul being vault boy's inspiration?? not sure what to feel about that tbh
the casual dismemberments... and equally casual attaching of limbs... not even prosthetic limbs.....
the vaulties eating good healthy well-balanced meals. giving out caviar in the welcome basket. kinda 50/50 on it
the vault 31 - 32 - 33 subplot couldve been more fucked up
have brotherhood knights always been celibate or did i miss the memo
there are regular chickens and... deer? for some reason?
the ghoul's design. it's fine in action but mostly it's meh
the vault 4 cult for moldaver
vault 4 as a refuge for shady sands survivors. im mad about it but like. i get it
that guys "elixir" (some altered jet??) fixing everything about thaddeus' foot instantenously AND GIVING HIM HEALING POWERS???
things i did not like:
lucy's plot premise is very much fallout 3 redux
lucy and maximus as a ship is very meh and kind of forced and not compelling. go give us nothing!!!
wilzig's head as a macguffin that everyone is after... ehh kind of just okay as a plot device
also the ghoul randomly eating that other ghoul???
the squire who bullied maximus calls himself fat but he isn't fat?? not even chubby??? hello????? just got a soft face
water chip being fucked feels very fallout 3 also but they kind of dropped it?
they definitely named cooper howard after todd. as tribute probably, which he doesn't deserve
fiend = cannibal now?????
maximus recognizing vault 4 as a cult but not recognizing the brotherhood as one lol
vault tec evil capitalism vs hollywood communists storyline was kind of basic. and bland. and weak
the enclave could've been established + explored better
no geckos or any other west coast-specific monsters
showing me ncr ranger armor when the ncr is gone
ghouls have healing powers?? WITHOUT RADIATION??
things i hated hated hated:
the ghoul needing drugs to combat the Disease That Turns Ghouls Feral
feral ghouls being basically zombies :/
IN EPISODE FIVE. THEY REVEAL. THAT SHADY SANDS. WAS BOMBED. THE ENTIRE NCR. WAS BOMBED. IN 2277. THE YEAR OF THE FIRST BATTLE OF HOOVER DAM
BASICALLY RETCONNED FNV?? IM PUTTING MY EARS IN MY FINGERS AND GOING LA LA LAAAAA
VAULT-TEC DROPPED THE BOMBS ???? BIG MT + MR HOUSE BEING IN ON IT????
THE BIG STUPID FUCKING REVEAL IN EPISODE EIGHT?? THAT THE OVERSEER BOMBED SHADY SANDS BECAUSE HIS WIFE DIDN'T WANT TO GO HOME WITH HIM??? FUCK THAT???
the brotherhood being the main faction of the west coast now. booo!! booo!!!!
the fucking last shot of new vegas being a burnt out husk. probably foreshadowing that hank is going to house's body but. UGH I HATE IT
to summarize: it came out strong! and stumbled hard falling face fucking first at the finish line. i would have liked it a lot more if it did not shit on the west coast as much as it did. because what the FUCK. if it was set literally anywhere else and left the ncr alone i would have liked it more, because on its own, as a self-contained story, divorced from the rest of the fallout series canon, it's not bad!!! it's fun, there's some good bits, it has the ~vibes~ but - and this is a big but - i don't know what it's trying to say. it's all very surface level and the very vague themes i picked up on are not really reiterated in the plot
it's like... the bits that make it fallout are there. vaults. the brotherhood. ghouls. a dog named dogmeat. but there's something lacking. it's like your usual sci-fi post-apocalypse show with a fallout veneer. idk. i like it for what it is but also i hate it for what it's emblematic of. that's all

Gah see the one thing I can't do with the EDAs, and it drives me up the wall nuts, no matter how much I do agree that they are meant to be books and that's the point of them, that they only metatextually and even thematically work as books, and obscure forgotten books at that - the one thing is, I can't make vids. Gifsets either. God, you have no idea how much I wish I could vid this series.
So many things, so many astonishing visuals and cinematic parallels, so much I want to string together in a coherent form and I can't, I just can't. Like, the actual factual thing that caused me to fucking Mandela-effect myself into misremembering the series as a 90s tv show in the first place was imagining a fanvid about Fitz's fashion sense set to Macklemore's Thriftshop, of all fucking things, BUT. While yes, obviously that would be a work of unrivaled genius, it's not just that. Over the years it's become this endless want, this constantly seeing gifsets and screencaps and vids, vids, above all else, vids, of all the different moments there are.
There is (of-fucking-course) a blog (at least one, but maybe many more) dedicated exclusively to making gifsets of every time destiel touch each other in all contexts. Of fucking course there is. I scream with envy over this because like. That could be us, if only the EDAs had any footage at all, but it's a goddamn (brilliant, daft, exceedingly stupid) BOOK SERIES instead. Every time Eight/Fitz touch? Fitz is in fifty books and they are both extremely touchy; you could absolutely dedicate an entire fucking tumblr blog to making a gifset of each of those moments; you'd be making gifs for fucking years.
I want to bestow upon them the highest honor I could give: a fanvid about their insane nutso relationship set to Vienna Teng's Never Look Away. I want a Sam vid set to Marina's Oh No! I want an Eight vid to the Indigo Girls' Galileo. I can see all these so so clearly and I want to share them with the world. I want a gifset of thematic uses of the color red in Sam's early books episodes books. I want to hear Sail on Sailor and know how the fuck the diagetically composed Dr Who theme would actually sound on violin or acoustic guitar, with its unspeakably tender lyrics. I want someone's painstakingly color-corrected, digitally restored, hi-res slo-mo shot of Fitz in his princess fairy tale wedding dress flying around on a jetpack.
Like they are books and they're supposed to be books and it's significant to what the silly things are trying to say, and also quite frankly there is no way in hell any doctor who ever, even now, could pull off even half the shit they got away with via the infinite budget of the page, and they certainly could not have made say, YIT in the 90s and have it look anything but silly and cheap when it needed to look real, BUT. I wish I could see it. I wish I could make the vids I see playing in my head when I reread these silly, edgy, annoyingly smug, painfully earnest, wildly creative and visually stunning FUCKING books.

so I take it from your gifset reblog of Lenore & Verna, you have now watched "The Fall of the House of Usher" !! What did you think? Which Usher did you like best and least? Give me all your thoughts on Verna because she's spectacular. :)
Yes!!! I've finally watched it and I loved it! I've always loved Poe's work and I think the way Mike Flanagan and the team worked with the materials, how they mixed the stories, presented them and spiced them up worked beautifully. It was really captivating for me! I think even the poem-reciting parts fit right in.
I think the most interesting Usher was Madeline, she felt much more like a "main character" for me than Roderick (the younger versions of him felt like puppets for Madeline?). For this reason my least favorite was Roderick, he was too much of an everyman in antagonist form if it makes sense (he didn't really have a personality? he was just annoying, I might be wrong of course, maybe I was just too focused on Verna :D). I couldn't really chose a favorite and a least favorite out of Roderick's kids, most of them had an interesting and sick story. (I think the most brutal death belongs to Prospero though, and most interesting to Vic with the murder of her girlfriend.)
Verna has my heart right now. 🖤 I'm always down for Death/Satan/trickster type of characters, and to mix that with the raven (as symbol, character), it's just chef's kiss… gosh! And Carla Gugino is insanely gorgeous. The Lenore & Verna scene is the most memorable and darkly beautiful I think, but every scene where she was present was great. My favorite visually stunning part is where she is standing on the remains of the Usher house with the glowing eyes.
What are your thoughts and feelings about the show?

Rings of Power: Episode Six Review
Many, many spoilers ahead.
Southlands
- Post-volcano visuals were stunning; I want to steal them for Dagor Bragollach gifsets.
- If, you know, I ever make a gifset.
- I thought the scene in the healing tent was highly moving, but I have to say, this is the third time I thought we’d find out Bronwyn was dead, and it’s not that I want her to die, it’s just that there’s only so many fakeouts I can care about.
- Speaking of: their treatment of Elendil’s grief for Isildur was fantastic. However.
- We all know Isildur isn’t actually dead.
- We are all very sure of this.
- And it’s not that I wanted anyone in particular to die from the volcano, it’s just that I feel strongly that if you are going to have a volcano erupt and you have an ensemble cast, someone central to the plot SHOULD die of it.
- Instead, even the creepy villager guy made it.
- Speaking of that side of things, the synopsis definitely pulled a fast one on me with Adar; I assumed he’d be coming up with a new name for himself, not the Southlands.
- . . . honestly, I think that reveal would have hit harder if they’d waited. The book fans already knew where this was going, but letting it be called Mordor by the narration really nails home that they’re not getting the land back, and I think they should have waited to nail this particular coffin closed. It’s inevitable, sure, but timing is everything.
- Oh, yeah.
- There’s also Celeborn.
- I literally shouted WHAT at my screen.
- Several times.
- Don’t get me wrong, I support him existing in the narrative, I just -
- This was such a bewildering direction to take with him.
- Him going out to fight in the war instead of staying in Doriath. Him being missing, presumed dead, when we all know he’s going to have to turn up again later.
- Why would you make this narrative choice? What is the plan?
- I have so many questions, and I’m not sure I want the answers.
Harfoots
- It’s a little thing, but I like that they say “hair of her foot” instead of “hair of her head.”
- I liked Poppy’s song about snails.
- In general, I like the slow dread of the smaller horrors the Harfoots had to face in this episode.
- I have mixed feelings about Poppy’s decision to go after the Stranger (can we just go ahead and call him Gandalf now? I feel really sure he’s Gandalf now). On the one hand, warning him is a noble goal; on the other hand, the Harfoots really need all hands on deck right now.
- Sadoc continues to be a standout character; I love how he clings to his traditions, but stills tries so desperately to be kind about it, like when he’s sending the Stranger away.
- I also love his final lines in the episode - the grumpy resignation of ‘we might as well do this’ that’s behind “Why not? We’re all going to die anyway,” and how he then throws himself into doing it, and the humor of, “How could we miss him? He’s a GIANT.”
- Very curious about the creepy people following the Stranger.
Dwarves
- I loved just about every scene that Durin was in.
- Love the references to Khuzdul and to dwarves’ secret names, though I don’t quite like the dwarf lords using it in front of Elrond, even quietly.
- So Durin has a brother! Who we haven’t heard from until now. Some kind of rift?
- Durin the elder disinheriting his son over the argument seems extreme.
- Disa’s reaction is . . . interesting. Up until now, she’s been a very positively focused character; her final scene with Durin here was giving me definite Lady Macbeth vibes. Our friend Disa is ambitious.
- I kind of like it.
- Like. It definitely puts a more morally gray vibe out there for her. But I think it could be fun.
- Not sure of the feasibility of that two man mining operation they had going, but I really liked the vibe between the two characters.
- And we have our balrog! Earlier than I was expecting him.

2020 ~everything~ wrap
i finally have time to do all of the tag games that people have tagged me in over the past month or so! i cannot for the life of me remember who tagged me in which one, so i’m just putting ~everything~ in one huge post. if i tag you anywhere then consider it a standing invitation to do whichever of these you haven’t done :) in fact, this is me issuing a standing invite to any of my followers who wants to do it :) also, thank you all!
Creator Wrap: Favourite Works
Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your 5 (or so) favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works!
this collection of philosophy quotes paired with thai bl series, (and its sequel) which is possibly my favourite thing i’ve ever made. for, uh, nerd reasons.
these gifted text post memes i made still make me laugh sometimes
this fic about green from 2gether, which i wrote in the notes app on my phone and published the same day. not my absolute best writing but i am very fond of it <3
i have a bunch fof friend zone dangerous area edits/shitposts which i like, but i’m particularly fond of my fzda as satire headlines (which now has a sequel!)
i also love my crisgood-walmart-lesbian post. i might send it in to gmmtv to try and convince them to do a crisgood-bffs spin-off
+ bonus: since i wrote this list i made this gifset (my first ever!) of jennie panhan in the shipper and i love her too much not to include her on here
+ extra nerdy bonus: this niche meme about Chinese philosophy, which still makes me crack up whenever I think about it
Favourite Creators/Follow Forever
i’ve completely lost track of who’s following who from which blog, so this is just going to be a haphazard, non-exhaustive list of people who i adore/admire/am vaguely intimidated by, mutuality be damned. maybe we talk all the time! maybe we’ve never interacted! maybe i am constantly there in ur tags... lurking... 👀... but if you’re on this list you have made me smile at least once this year and i love you for that alone <3
@wjmild kylie!! you make gifs of arm & tay & lee (separately or in various combinations) & the shipper & and kapook & random fluke pusit cameos & school rangers so i don’t have to <3 ilysm
@janeramida vianey, you have such impeccable taste in general, but your sizzy gifset in particular is so gorgeous it lives in my mind rent free
@applelapis bri, this post was a callout and i want you to know that it haunts me at night as i lie awake staring at the ceiling :((((( i hope you are happy
@gigiesarocha cata, i love it when you show up on my dash bc you have!! such taste!! also, every time you gif gigie i gain five years of life <3 pls continue doing the Good Work
@pvrrish eleni, i remeber legit thinking that this was an official poster when i first saw it, it’s so beautiful
@ahysopae juliette your khaithird fic is so good and it literally changed the way i think about khai (not an easy feat)
@kurosawadachi angel, whenever i think about grace’s speech i remember your gifset and get literal chills
@doctorbahnjit alexa, you have no right to be as funny as you are. your friend zone edits give me life
@khaotungthanawat sam, you’re probably sick of getting tagged in these lists by random strangers, but i just had to bc your gifsets are Pure Art
@tanwirapong roa, all your gifsets are so ✨iconic✨
faiza @asianmelodrama and rahul @petekaos! yours were the first two thai drama blogs i followed and for ages i lowkey thought of you as my fandom parents.
and some more blogs that make me happy: @curlykytta / @lee-thanat  / @fck-inspector-m / @pangwave / @tichawongtipkanon / @tawanv @kimmonv (violet istg i have spent more time this year trying to figure out how many blogs you have than i have spent admiring your gifsets. & i spend a lot of time admiring your gifsets) / @taytawan / @1akorn and @yihwas (and your radiant lovechild @lakornladies ofc) / @teh-ohaew / @vihokratanas (mel your gifsets are just so gorgeous) / @tootiredtoosadtooangry / @headcompletelyempty / @demiromanticmickey / and there are definitely more but my brain is a sieve so apologies if i’ve forgotten anyone!! i love you all!!
2020 HIGHLIGHTS ✨
rules: list your top 10 shows (bl or not) you watched in 2020 (doesn’t necessarily have to be shows that came out in 2020 though!)
1. 2GETHER & STILL2GETHER
Tumblr media
my first thai drama, and even after all the amazing shows i’ve watched this year, it still has a special place in my heart. watching 2gether was the first time i’d ever seen a queer romcom that just... was. for me, by the simple fact of its being, 2gether was revolutionary. and then still2gether came along and took all the best things about the first season and gave us something beautiful and quiet and lovely and just proved to me, once and for all, that queer happiness doesn’t need to justify its own existence. there can be gay cuddles on the beach for no other reason than that we want them.
2. UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN
Tumblr media
i don’t really have the words for this one but. it makes my heart so very soft.
3. FRIEND ZONE 2: DANGEROUS AREA
Tumblr media
season one was mindless fun because everyone was an absolute trashfire and it was hella cathartic to watch, but season 2... wow. i love it for so many reasons: it has messy and authentic queer rep; the characterisation is excellent and i somehow care about all of the characters; amazing women taking centre stage(!); a wlw relationship with lesbian, ace and bipolar rep; multiple interesting plotlines; actual character development; arm weerayut as a chaos gremlin... absolutely one of my favourites of 2020.
4. CHERRY MAGIC
Tumblr media
i don’t think i need to explain this one, which is fortunate, because i have no idea how exactly i’d describe the happy-warm-fuzzy-queer-seen-loving-affirmed-profound feeling that rises in my chest whenever i think about it.
5. THE GIFTED: GRADUATION
Tumblr media
confession: i liked season 2 more than season 1 (with the exception of the ending, which we don’t talk about). season 1 was enjoyable and interesting, but for me it was season 2 which made me love this series. it did some incredibly interesting and complicated things (even if it didn’t quite nail the landing): it pushed characters to the breaking point and wove so many layers into the story and questioned its own underlying themes. plus, watching it alongside everyone in the fandom made it 200% better. i love all of you and i love this show. egg girl 5eva.
6. THE SHIPPER
Tumblr media
i 100% understand why so many people didn’t like this show, or found it problematic, but through some fluke it absolutely worked for me (even the ending). one day i will write an essay explaining my rationale, but for now i’ll just say that it’s one of my favourite shows about adolescence and queerness and identity and compassion and friendship and love that i’ve ever watched.
7. YYY
Tumblr media
this series is absolutely off its rocker, and it somehow managed to be one of the most affirming shows i’ve watched. it shouldn’t have worked by it did, and i love it so much.
8. 3 WILL BE FREE
Tumblr media
absolutely iconic. amazing plot, stunning visuals, great characters, canon polyamory, jennie being incredible... what a series.
9. MANNER OF DEATH
Tumblr media
i love the fact that this show exists; i love the mix of crime and romance; i love maxtul’s acting; i love the central relationship; i love bun. i know we’re not even halfway through yet, but this show is doing something special and i’m so grateful that i get to watch it unfold in real time.
10. CHIHAYAFURU (SEASON 3)
Tumblr media
odd one out on my list, but I had to include it. chihayafuru is my all-time favourite anime and it finally got a third season, which is somehow even better than the first two. mashima taichi is one of my favourite characters of all time and his storyline hits me on such a profound level. plus, in the years since i first say this show i’ve fallen in love with classical japanese literature (particularly heian poetry) so i had newfound appreciation for the karuta matches (aka i cried every time someone recited one of my favourite poems)
other favourites: together with me, he’s coming to me, sotus and sotus s, my dear loser: edge of 17, why r u, theory of love, wake up chanee!, gameboys, pearl next door, uta koi (anime), three kingdoms (2010), blood and water (netflix). (itsay would almost certainly be on my list if i’d had time to watch it. same with dark blue kiss, which i had to pause so i could do my assignments)
Final Thoughts
well, it’s been... a year (i don’t think anyone needs a reminder of the details) but writing this post has reminded me of all the amazing shows and people I discovered over the course of it.
thank you to everyone for being so lovely and creative and funny and quirky and kind and passionate. you’re all incredibly awesome people and i wish all of you the very best xx

For this round of free-for-alls, we’re doing a little highlight reel from the @alexmanesappreciation event last week! A ton of amazing stuff was created and I highly recommend going to sift through it all. For this, I tried to focus on some of the stuff that didn’t get as much attention as I thought they deserved. So please go give these pieces some love and then go check out the other stuff the Alex event had to offer!
The Tale of Willow the Lizard
Not Rated (I’d say T)| @entropychanges | Alex Manes & Gregory Manes
"I know you’re scared, Alex. As much as I know I have to do this, I hate myself for it too. I hate that I’m leaving you alone with him.”
Alex took a shaky breath and leaned against his brother.
“It’s just one more year, right? One more year and I can leave too.”
“One more year and you can go off and be the vagabond musician you were always meant to be,” Greg responded, chuckling lightly. Alex laughed along.
Or, how Alex got his lizard named Willow.
Why We Love It:
If I could name two of the most under-utilized things in the world of RNM fanfiction, those two things would be Willow the Lizard and Gregory Manes. This fic (written for the day one theme family and pets) gives us a little of both as it shows us a little of what could’ve been Alex and Greg’s dynamic back when they were younger. I love seeing Alex know that, while he’s not exactly the perfect brother, he is the safest person in the house and he almost idolizes what he can take. And then, obviously, we’re introduced to Willow the Lizard which is always a happy little blessing. Definitely a comforting little read that I absolutely recommend.
Let’s make anniversaries together
Not Rated (I’d say G/T)| @benkouji726 | Michael Guerin/Alex Manes
Why We Love It:
This little fic was written for the day two theme of AUs and is honestly one of the funnest things I’ve read recently. I’m a sucker for a good college AU and this factors in that element along with Michael being a little starstruck at the simple existence of someone like Alex Manes. Alex is cool and suave and Michael is the true embodiment of a himbo, as they should be. It’s a whole lot of fun and totally worthy of a read.
From now on, they are in charge.
Not Rated | @slynella | Jenna Cameron & Alex Manes & Kyle Valenti
Why We Love It:
For the third day theme of teamwork, this artist just casually came in with a stunning piece of art of the trio we need more of in canon. I am notoriously bad at explaining the goodness that is art, but I can say that this is so much fun to look at and I like the idea of all three of them just coming to fuck shit up. I usually try not to curse in my reviews, but I’m doing it now. They are here to fuck shit up and I am here for it. Thank you for the visual of it, doing the work that canon refuses.
Series #2, Issue #13: There Are No More Manes Men Left
Not Rated | @queersirius | Alex Manes & Gregory Manes & Jesse Manes
Why We Love It:
THIS IS SO COOL. That is what I said when I saw it the first time, it’s what I said when I saw it on my dash again, it’s what I said when I was searching for things to put in this highlight list, and it’s what I said when I looked at it again to make this little review. It’s just so cool. For the day 4 theme of war, we get that RNM-level of a iconic scene from the beginning of 2x13... but in comic book form. It’s so cool. I cannot fathom how long it took to make only for me to sit here and say it’s so cool, but it is so goddamn cool. Just go reblog it, give it love, it deserves it, it’s so cool.
Alex Manes // You’re in ruins
Not Rated | @michaeldeluca | Alex Manes
Why We Love It:
This one definitely stuck out to me when I was scrolling through things because this is the only playlist that was made for this week. Obviously, it’s fitting that it was made for the day five theme of music and it did not disappoint. It’s a solid list of early/mid-2000s emo music that was a mix of songs I forgot about, songs I still listen to all the time, and songs I wondered how I missed. I will always be thoroughly impressed by people who can make a good playlist and this is no exception. Go give it a listen and let it hit you in your angsty, nostalgic heart.
Transatlantic
Not Rated | @westsideroyalty | Michael Guerin/Alex Manes
Why We Love It:
I think this might be the true embodiment of short and sweet. For the day six theme of The Lost Decade, this reads like a letter from Alex to Michael during the time that he’s overseas. It’s poetic and full of imagery that my 11th grade English teacher would’ve bowed down to. To give an even more specific anecdote, it reminds me of when I would get a new aria in a language I didn’t speak and I would go research the meaning in English and spend days studying the words and trying to understand them inside and out so I could portray it to the best of my ability. This reads like finally understanding. It’s beautiful. Go give it some love.
Tyler Blackburn, Bicon
Not Rated | @alexmanes | Alex Manes
Why We Love It:
Speaking for most people around these parts, I love Tyler Blackburn. This gifset gives a nice, concise way to explain to someone why I love Tyler Blackburn. With nicely edited gifs of Tyler as Alex with the colors of the bi pride flag, we have Tyler’s own words about portraying Alex and how cathartic it is. He loves Alex down to his core in every facet. He’s the reason Alex is so lovable and the reason why we were able to have a whole week dedicated to him and so many people could make so many things for it. And it’s all shown right here in one gifset. So go reblog it!

CREATOR SPOTLIGHT: Colleen (@summercohen)
Support your local gif makers! In celebration of my one year gif-iversary, I am posting shoutouts to gif makers who have motivated and inspired me with their creativity in the past year. This post is for Colleen, whose gifs can be found here.
I first found Colleen’s blog through the notes on a Barry gifset that I had posted, and something about her reblog set her apart immediately. Colleen is overwhelmingly supportive and kind towards others about their art. We weren’t following each other at the time and had never exchanged words, yet she poured out a passionate set of tags that had me smiling for the rest of the week. It is this exact type of care and encouragement that we need more of on this website to keep content creators going. Not only is Colleen a skilled editor, but she is a driving force in this online community of creators who are seldom appreciated for their work. When looking at Colleen’s gifs, the sharpness of the images and the creativity she puts into them make her stand out as a gif maker. Colleen is both a seasoned creator and a role model for kindness, passion, and individuality.
MUST-SEE EDITS
A Star is Born Script Excerpts - This set showcases the creative ways that Colleen memorializes some of her favorite media. Going through her tag you will see multiple gifsets from A Star is Born, and this is generally Colleen’s style; she has central interests that she pays close attention to, giffing those subjects to perfection in many different ways. Her consistency and dedication are admirable. In this gifset, she used text as a creative asset to the images, pulling script excerpts from the film and overlaying them on top of the visuals of the scenes. This is such an inventive concept, and she executed it beautifully, from the sharpness of the scenes to the skillful blurring of certain pieces of text.
Cool - This gifset gives us a sense of Colleen’s eye for color (along with her love of the Jonas Brothers). The bold, stunning blues and cyans are the star of the show here, and they are brilliantly accented by pinkish reds and a few pops of orange. In addition to making strong and impactful color choices, Colleen chose very compelling pieces of the video. Image selection can make or break a gifset, and this is a category in which Colleen always excels. Placing the close up, predominantly red shot of all three brothers looking towards the camera in the center was a clever choice to break up the blue and draw attention. Colleen has a superb eye for composition.
Eleven - According to the tags on this set, creating this one was a somewhat experimental process for Colleen. She made the decision to try something new and combine still images with gifs when building Eleven’s aesthetic. The still images enhance the subtle softness of the collection of images, and the muted coloring creates a sense of wonder, danger, and a bit of childlike fear. In this set, Colleen cropped gifs in a clever and intentional way, using only parts of Eleven’s face to convey closer detail. This set creates a full-body summary, as we see her hands, her feet, a bit of her torso, and her face, all in different pieces that combine into a well-rounded whole.
The Jonas Brothers - “#im dead from making this pls support me.” The time and effort that must have gone into this breathtaking rainbow creation should be considered and appreciated. 63 individual gifs make up this colorful set, and Colleen took the time to create, color, and combine them all into the finished product. Each grouping of gifs blends beautifully into the next, as the vibrant hues play off of each other perfectly. In this set we see all stages of the iconic three-piece band, from their adorable Disney Channel beginnings to their current mature style, and everything in between. This set was a work of pure passion, and with it Colleen embodied the reason we make gifs - to showcase the things we love.
Willy - It’s no secret that Colleen loves Bill Hader, and in this gif series she has compiled a collection of his sexiest characters. This gifset stands out from the crowd for its subtle, but unifying, use of blue and cyan. While the coloring of this set isn’t overwhelmingly vibrant or flashy, Colleen used her refined eye for color to create a sense of harmony and calm. The color blue is here to complement, but not detract from, the subject, and we find ourselves drawn to the character at the focal point of the set. The bottom left gif is particularly captivating for its combination of different shades of blue.
CREATOR’S TOP PICKS

stranger things thoughts n spoilers under the cut! i really enjoyed this season.
-one of my favorite things about st has always been the aesthetic of the show. the eighties-inspired visuals are always so strong and this season looked especially stunning— that mall?? holy shit. i love seeing vintage logos and the fashion (el’s look this season was so kickass) and the color palette this season was so beautiful. it felt like summer (and fireworks were popping outside of my house when i watched the finale it was very atmospheric)
-the transitions between scenes really worked for me, especially the comedic ones (“it’s impossible to break in!!1!!”) they built tension and felt very cheesy eighties scifi. the whole evil russians thing also felt very period
the adults
-i’ve never been super huge on jopper but this season won me over. besides all the fighting, they did make a really good team.
-murray and alexei were hilarious and i loved their duo, especially juxtaposed with joyce and hopper. the scene in the car was so funny and then the emotional whiplash of the woodpecker scene man :(
-like everyone else with a pulse i am in love with winona ryder, and she really shined this season. joyce grew so much as a character without disregarding her trauma, she’s a badass and man after that finale she deserves a goddamn break
scoops troop
-god erica was so good. all of her lines were gold and i love that her and dustin kind of bonded by the end (THE MY LITTLE PONY THESIS!!!). i think someone needs to make a gifset of nancy giving dustin a pep talk at the snow ball and then erica insulting him
-the erica/steve/robin/dustin dynamic was just overall really good.
-i esp liked dustin taking care of robin and steve when they were drugged— that was really good.
-so let’s talk about robin. i was so ready for her to be one dimensional and just like? steve’s girlfriend or whatever. and after the first couple episodes i was already impressed— robin was fucking awesome!! she’s a badass!! translating the russian code, she was so funny, maya hawke did an amazing job with her character. and when she came out??? man i fucking lost it. i paused the show and called someone and just said STRANGER THINGS SAID GAY RIGHTS and she said she didn’t want spoilers so i hung up. i did not expect them to go there with robin, but i’m so glad they did.
the party
-i think mike and eleven are very cute but watching them make out at the beginning made me a little uncomfortable? people sexualizing these kids (esp mbb) has been a problem so it just felt a little icky. but mike serenading el was great and very much relatable and his love speech (the thing old people say to each other) was precious.
-i loved seeing them just!! be teenagers!!
-max and el going to the mall and madonna playing and el starting to find herself was so cathartic
-the kids had some really iconic moments but “I DUMP YOUR ASS” was one of the best, and max+el’s moment on the bus after was very very good
-so, will. i’m upset that he didn’t have much to do this season after those first couple episodes. but the fight with mike and him destroying castle byers really hit me. noah schnapp is so damn talented— he captured so perfectly that feeling of alienation from your friends, that feeling of realizing childhood is really over now. as a queer person that hit me especially hard
jancy
-i felt for nancy this season, and watching her deal with misogynist pigs in the workplace made me respect her on a new level. everyone on this show deserves a goddamn break but i want to see nancy succeed.
-i wasn’t sure if i would enjoy the whole gang being separated for this season but i ended up enjoying all of the storylines and it made the payoff at the end when they were all reunited really cool.
-i was in a play my junior year and the main character was always referencing his girlfriend— SUSIE BABY— and she didn’t show up until the very end of the show. so when dustin started talking about his girlfriend suzie from camp i immediately thought of that play, and the ending had me floored. i really love that gaten got to sing and i loved everyone’s reactions and i esp loved how campy that duet was
-a lot of people are upset with billy’s death, but i think that’s what had to happen. it felt real. or at least, as real as heroic death by otherworldly monster can get. honestly i was kind of indifferent to the whole billy thing this season despite it being a main plot point, but dacre’s acting was very very good
-the hopper voiceover at the end really had me crying in my camp know where shirt from target. man,
going forward:
-i really don’t think hopper is dead. they didn't actually show him die?? and the post credits scene.. i feel like it would have been a bigger deal if they weren’t planning on coming back to this next season
-s4 nancy in a blazer a la working girls. shoulder pads baby!!
-will is going to have to talk to mike about the fight that was never addressed.
-i want more of robin! robin coming out and robin maybe getting a girlfriend and robin and steve being friends (thank god steve has a friend his own age god).
-those goodbyes felt really short— i bet fall or christmas 2020/1986 the byers are going to be back in town visiting or something and shit is going to go down.
i probably could come up with more to say but i want to go get sonic before happy hour is over

OK so regarding the crunchy roll poll, generally I'm not bothered by it as most anime is about personal opinion BUT I've seen a few people saying it didn't deserve best animation (or something)...this annoys me. OK so there were dodgy frames but as a viewer you're literally not going to notice them unless you're deliberately going out of your way to search for them and I don't understand why anyone would bother. However there were also some absolutely stunning moments! I'm on mobile so I can't give examples with pics but as someone who's been watching ice skating (i watch figure and other stuff) from a young age (never done figure skating and only gone skating a few times myself) I think the anime beautifully captures the sport visually. The sparkles, the costumes, the ice falling from their skates while performing jumps...all of that is stunning. The focus on the feet, hands or other parts of the body other than the face...I don't know but to me it really felt as if I was watching Irl figure skating. The detail of the backgrounds was stunning too. So, yeah, there were dodgy frames but so what? Overall it was a feast for the senses, it evoked emotion and really isn't that the point of any art? I've never seen an anime that has quite literally stolen my breath like YOI did and it had nothing to do with the fact that the main characters were gay (Although I ship Victuuri hard). The whole reason I watched it was because I saw gifset's of the animation, the plot only drew me in further. Anyway, just wanted to put in my thoughts.
