what i think is really important for ian’s character especially is the fact that he was only able to ever truly fight and argue with mickey. im not talking about big blow up fights but like little squabbles and ‘married couple’ tiffs. he never did that with anyone else, and i think it shows how comfortable him and mickey are together. they’re both able to argue without worrying the other is leaving - even before they marry. it shows how they can fully express themselves and their own frustrations- they aren’t pretending to be someone else. mickey usually doesn’t try to ‘fit in’ places but ian does - as shown by him trying to fit into caleb and trevor’s worlds. he doesn’t need to fit in with mickey, he’s fine the way he is.

The car hit a pothole, and they groaned. Then, on a sharp turn, Mickey rolled. Ian caught him before he banged his head, locking his arms around him securely. “I got you.”

It said something about Mickey’s state of mind that he didn’t immediately accuse Ian of cuddling him. Instead, he let out a shaky breath and slowly relaxed.

I think yet another reason Lip and Mandy was such a bad relationship is because Lip clearly always thought he was above her.

Mandy is the one actively encouraging Lip to go to college and better his life and get out of the south side. Other than that brief moment in S5 when Lip was trying to convince Mandy not to leave town with Kenyatta (which he only does after Ian pushes him to do so) Lip does not do the same for her. Possibly because he doesn’t believe she’s meant for better things.

Similarly to Fiona, Lip has always had a superiority complex over the Milkoviches. So of course he’d behave that way while attempting having a relationship with one of them.

The reason Ian and Mickey’s relationship works in contrast is because that element does not exist in their relationship. Neither of them think they are better than the other or put the other on a pedestal. I know Ian has said some unflattering shit about Mickey at times (a product of John Wells’ hate train after Noel left the show) but I don’t think he’s ever truly thought he was better than Mickey or that Mickey wasn’t capable of bettering his life. He got Mickey a job at the Kash and Grab when they were kids. After they’re married, he pushes Mickey to get a legal job and signs a lease for them to live together in a fancy apartment complex. Mickey also does not put Ian on a pedestal or cling to him as a ticket to a better life the way Mandy did with Lip. He does not want Ian to “save” him. He knows Ian is flawed-he just loves him anyway.

something i physically can’t get over with shameless is all the deleted scenes from season 4 which are SO IMPORTANT to Mickey’s character. like sure, we all talk about how important the ones from season 11 were as well and im not denying that - they’re literally some of my favourite scenes ever. but the season 4/5 ones??? the one where mickey tries to convince mandy to leave kenyatta?? the one where mickey says not to hit women?? the one where he announces he ‘got into it’ with kenyatta?? it seemed so out of character for him to just not care about mandy being in an abusive relationship - they so badly should have kept them in. it helps establish that although mickeys family is not the same as the gallagher’s, him and mandy are still close and love each other. ALSO- ian��s vision???? come onnnn you can’t leave that out it’s not fairrr
