#tw: kelly #call of the night #uguisu anko #👁👄👁 #i started reading call of the last night on a whim and ended up speeding through the whole thing #i thought it was going to be trashy but reasonably engaging from the way it started #but by chapter 20 it was straight up Good #i can only describe it as having taken a grip of its best core elements and refining them over time #i don't think that happens very often so i was elated #i was not expecting it to be so emotionally mature and nuanced regarding feelings and relationships #the whole experience was a very pleasant surprise! #anyway anko. some motivations i felt like i had to stretch my suspension of disbelief to buy into but they at the core still make sense #but she treads treads that line of simultaneously extremely and unnecessarily cool and profoundly sad and pathetic and that is so tasty #she doesn't become a less entertaining character once she has her character development moment and i'm glad about that

I can sit and critique forever as I am the world's proudest hater but I do feel that a lot of the snark around Vengeful is just people crucially misunderstanding the point of the villains universe. it's fucking camp! everything is self aware and overdramatic and reads like a published (albeit very good) fanfiction. if you're in specific circles you absolutely recognise the tropes schwab is pulling from and the tongue in cheek references she makes and all of them are on some base level FUNNY. I don't think it can be read with 100% gravitas because as much as it is brutal and visceral and about extremely traumatized people desperately clutching onto each other because carrying on feels easier than trying something new, it is also a book in which the girlboss mafia leader queen gets taken out by a naked college quarterback . schwab likes nice and wrapped up endings and after dealing with stief and Muir it is a BREATH OF FRESH FUCKING AIRRRR

#em draws stuff #the flight of the heron #my reread got interrupted (they changed the font on my ebook) right around the fort augustus section so I had greening on the mind #and I thought it might be fun to actually draw him - it's interesting that he's described in very similar terms to francis throughout #and so it was an interesting challenge to make sure that their vibes were Strongly Conflicting! #so for greening I wanted to focus on a more slick and smooth and administratorial look #if he wasn't in the eighteenth century he'd have a clipboard and one of those very heavy engraved ballpoint pens in his pocket #and then with guthrie I tried to convey that This Is Not A Guy Who Is Pleasant To Spend Time Around #a little trickier because I have a strong mental image of his mouth and his hair and nothing else - but I think I got there in the end! #I actually tried doing an underpainting for this drawing and it turned out fairly okay so I might do it again sometime

I finally saw the Barbie movie! I have. Thoughts.

#I am too deep in the Illness™ to fully articulate said thoughts but ultimately: #stylistically it was very good and it was extremely funny. I thought the message got muddied a little bit and the pacing was uneven. #I enjoyed it but I don't really have a burning desire to ever watch it again. #I thought ken was extremely annoying. #there were some really nice pieces of commentary in there that succinctly put words to a variety of issues. #but I ultimately felt like this was trying to be too many things at the same time. #like a feminist commentary AND a stylized comedy AND a celebration of weirdness/ordinariness AND an identity discovery story #and I think it would have worked better if either a) they had picked one of those and ran with it the whole way or b) this had been #formatted as a tv show so that each one of those could have been given the appropriate amount of time it deserved. I think it was just #trying to do too much in the space of a two hour movie #there were also these random bursts of like 'oh no I'm in a position of power/privilege that's so HARD I hate it so MUCH' but meant #completely earnestly? which I also found weird. #and like. the movie is fine. it's not evil or horrible or even badly-made it just didn't completely rock my world. it was a pleasant two #hours that made me laugh #mc13 watches stuff #please don't hate me I know how beloved this movie was
