Day 23 Jody the Explorer

But Diego, where's the fucking map!

I had a very restless night, anxious about both driving and kayaking in open waters. I got up at 5.15am to organise myself and psych myself up for the day's events. I forgot it would be dark at 6.15am when I had to leave for Praia de Albandeira to meet Filipe Tidy for my kayak tour to Benagil Caves. So several degrees of difficulty, a manual car, driving on the other side, it's dark, I don't know where I'm going (fingers crossed Siri works)...So, I got out of the "gates" and about 1km in Siri says "make a u-turn at the roundabout". WTF, what does that mean? I had made a wrong turn and here, there's so many one way streets, and some of them are very narrow (I had to put my side mirrors in), one wrong turn can cost several minutes and Filipe told me not to be late!

As I got further I built up my confidence. Re-connecting with manual driving was the simpler bit, remembering which side of the road to be on all the time was quite another experience. I had a 30 minute drive and was told yesterday to be careful as there was a dirt track down to the beach. I realised for two reasons why 7am was the best time slot to have chosen. Firstly, less people on the road, as it was really single vehicle only, and also as you'll see in the photos, apart from my little group of three plus the guide, there were only a handful of other tourists at the cave and they left, so my photos had no-one interrupting the awesomeness of the caves. Last year in summer, the government shut the caves to kayaking as people were injured from the chaos and probably their stupidity.

The ocean was so calm and being in a double with Felipe was even better. It was a bit cool to begin with, but warmed a little as the two hours continued. It was such an incredible experience, the only thing that could have made it better would have been seeing dolphins nearby, which is possible.

So, now that I had wheels and my mojo and it was only 9.15am I needed a plan. First to Porches Pottery for coffee and to browse the pottery. The cafe wasn't open and the pottery was not my taste, but I used the car and their bathroom to do a quick change. I then did a quick google for the best coffee and cake in Porches, which led me to Café Aurora. The owner had no fresh homemade cakes, but the coffee was ok. Her and her son couldn't recommend any decent pottery. It was a neat café and the son said they have their crowd of locals who visit and I saw a few of them dribble in while I was there. The son recommended a visit to Armação de Pêra, another beach side village. Again I googled best coffee and cakes and ended up at O Rei das Bolas de Berlim. Crap coffee (made with UHT as is frequent in the local pastelerias) and an ok pastel de nata and a custard donut! The beachfront area was lovely to walk along, but Praia da Rocha and surrounds is much better. I jumped back in the car and headed to Silves to look at what I might have missed yesterday. This time I chose to avoid highways as well as tolls, and ended up on some single lane only, back country roads wandering statistically what the riskiest proposition is!

Silves was pretty warm like yesterday and the mercado wasn't fully operating, some of the stores were closed and I was getting hungry. The son from the Porches café mentioned that Café Inglês was good. He did say on the weekend for music. I had one of the specials, creamy cheese bacalhau (cod)! As much as Mum's tuna mornay was ok as a kid I thought the world may have progressed since those days in the 1970s and 80s. It was ok, but a bit pricey at €14.

Back in the car at 3.05pm to try and grab my race bib for Thursday's run from Tourist Information, get to the gym, grab some items for the Seven Hanging Valleys hike tomorrow with Rosie, shower and to happy hour drinks at the Moonlight Bar by 5pm. I almost made it by 6pm! So here's the reference to "where's the fucking map". En route home my iphone decides to overheat and nothing works until it cools down! Nowhere to pull over so I just follow the signs and luckily it comes back on before I hit the hectic traffic in Portimão. At one point the police were behind me, then an ambulance with sirens was trying to get around me going up a tiny one way street. I aborted the Tourist Information, concentrated hard to get home and had to make a cup of tumeric tea to calm down.

I was looking forward to the Moonlight Bar expat happy hour drinks on Tuesday night, but it was not really pumping. I met Jim Young, who tells me he is an independent music producer from the UK. He rattles off some names I haven't heard of until he mentions Sting and Simon Cowell and assisting one of the Britain's Got Talent contestants win. He and his wife Sue are a lovely couple who spend a lot of their retirement in their campervan in Portugal.

thoughts on the musicals y’all recommended!

tysm for all the recs! i had so much fun listening to them, i really appreciate it! always feel free to rec more :)

to preface, there’s no actual judging system. it’s all about the vibes. so, in the order that i listened to them:

the mad ones

i already made a post abt this one, but i have to mention it again. i’ve been listening to it on repeat. like. straight up on a loop.

i’m obsessed with this

the storyline is so put together, and you can really feel the heart of the show

the characters were well written (with the exception of the boyfriend tbh, i could have done without him), and i’m so fascinated by sam and kelly’s relationship (writers were cowards for making them not gay)

the songs felt super cohesive, and the repeated drum loop was super well integrated. the sound techie in me is fascinated by the way this show was put together, and i’d love to see it performed (like. fr. i was getting ideas for the design. which is always so much fun)

pretty much everyone was like that, like idk what’s going on via words, but i def can feel it, which is the best kind of song

my mother didn’t like this one but whatever, she didn’t get to see the choreo that went with it so what does she know

i liked “favorite places” and “beautiful” a lot, but the rest of the songs were only okay

i wasn’t super attached to the characters and the singing was just. like. okay for me. i didn’t love any of them in particular

that being said. gonna be real. i had no idea what was happening throughout the entire musical. it’s a pretty music-light show, so that’s probably why?

maybe it would make more sense if i watched a performance rather than just listening to the soundtrack??? idk. anyone got a bootleg?

thomas borchert has a nice voice. very distinctive. googled him to see where else i can listen to him. he was rum tum tugger. anyways. mad respect for this man

sonically, it didn’t feel like a very cohesive show? like it felt like there were a lot of diff vibes going around

once on this island (2017 revival)

ok turns out musicals are a lot better when sung by professionals than by sixth graders who think they can belt even tho their voices are still cracking

also turns out that stories can be much more complex and interesting-- and have much deeper themes of racism and classism-- when on broadway than when in a sweaty middle school auditorium in an upper middle class white neighborhood

funny how that works, huh

i’m still a little unsure abt it, and probably wouldn’t listen to it just because i can, but i definitely don’t object to it anymore

also i’m now getting tik tok videos with audio from this musical can my iphone stop stalking me for ONE second

i wanted to like this one. SO badly. i REALLY wanted to like it.

but i couldn't really get into it?

there were a few songs that absolutely slapped, but overall, it was just kinda. eh. which sucks bc i have heard such good things about it

i LOVED "the astronomer," "the telescope," and "lights out"

but i didn't get through the entire album

i'll come back to it eventually and give it another try, i think. i might just not have been in the specific mood for it

To commemorate Inauguration Day, I walked around that day and wore my Oakland/Raiders tribute battle jacket. Vice President Harris is from Oakland. The Raiders too. My salty ass refuses to wear Las Vegas. That was probably one of the things I’ve done during the early days of California’s lockdown. Everything was closed, so I spent most of my time at the the Redwood Grove Nature Preserve, in Los Altos, and sewn patches on my vests/jackets. I should probably make another account because I don’t want this account to be mainly memes and my regular self. Like, not a lot people takes me seriously, which is fine since I don’t take myself seriously neither, but it would be nice to be seen out of my forced-smiling, teary-eyed metaphorical clown make-up once in a while. Also, this portrait feature on my new iPhone is incredible. Wtf. I talked so much smack about iPhones sucking so bad but this upgrade is cool. This feature manages to detail my horridness even further. It would be cool to utilize this feature for cosplay or drag but I do neither. Have a great day. Be safe. Lightning Returns : A

Hoperai game

I saw a few posts before playing the game saying that this is a Hoperai game (and how right you were) !!!

Okay, so I have an idea to write every moment that they have as soon as possible,because I'm starting to forget, so after I play I'll be posting the notes that I have here in my Iphone.

Obs: English is my third language*, please be aware of that when you see a mistake :v

By the way guys, both of them werent supposed to have feelings, a few moments in the game Light admits that she is unable to feel anything and that god probably made that to avoid any future problems/Hope is like this as well, but STILL, they demonstrate care for each other. (Later we talk about Lumina and Bhenivelze)

And another thing that gets me intrigade is how come there is not many post about LR here in the hoperai tag ? This game is amazing !! (like, it does have a few times that you get annoyed, but in general is amazing)

First moment: Okay, this is a simple one, after Lightning crash the Patron's party, she refers to Hope as "Mr Hope Estheim", hell yeah. (This is how she is goint to call him in bed) THIS HAPPENS IN THE FIRST FIVE MINUTES IN THE GAME, I do believe that this happens because she still doesn't fell really connect with him, its been sooo long since they were together in FFXIII, that she might think that Hope may not like her anymore, so she really is formal here.

Second: (Well, after I went to ark and saw a younger hope I was frustated, nevertheless, its possible to interact with Hope, he explains that he will be there to help us in this task and that he is in his younger body but doesnt know why.

Third: The loading screen saying that she sees Adult!Hope as an equal (Hell yeah) and I think this is quite nice, because Lightning would never engage a relationship if she doesnt see that special someone as a person beneth her, she is a woman of huge morals and we see that she belives that men have to be amazing (this is using her approval on Snow as info, where she said she would never giver her blessing if he was someone that didnt deserve)

Fourth: if you get hurt and dont use any potion Hope will say that he's worried.

Fifth: Welllll, this one I simpled loved, when we have to get fireworks for the play and Lightning is forced to say "Meow Meow Choco Chow" to Chocolina and Hope is listening and tease her.

"Something tells me you're not enjoying this as much as I am"

Sixth: ( mental note - I would pay for hear Hope complimenting her looks on that red dress - WTF WATANABE, WHY HAVENT YOU DONE THIS ???? ) but the fact that he was manipulated by Benivelzhe might have been the reason, because if he been himself (100%himself all them at that time, oh boy, he would fall from the ark -- I know that I would)

Note: Okay, so there is a cutscene where we see Hope, Snow and Noel deciding to save the world after the chaos spread, and Hope is an adult here, I wonder that happened --- Btw, I finished the game and Still dont understand clearly what happened to Hope, I know that there is a Dlc in FFXIII-2 that I havent played (it is in this DLC that adult!Hope see Lightning in Vahalla ?)

Seven(THEIR DAUGHTER): this is not a nice one, because after we see Vanille, Hope ask of her to Lightning and she tease him with something like "Someones got a crush" BUT not long after that we get a HUGE moment where Eclair is worried about the plan (where she will play a role in front of a crowd and it might fail) and Hope basically quotes her saying "Its not a question of can or cant" and then she asks if he is going to watch her back (PLEASE NOTE THAT THE GAME DOESNT SHOW HER FACE IN THIS MOMENT, I WONDER WHY ????? WE ALWAYS SEE HER FACE ON THE INTERACTIONS WHY IN THIS ONE WE CANT ??? ITS BECAUSE SHE IS WAITING FOR HIS ANWSER ??? I WAS NOT READY FOR THAT)

And guys, even tho Hope is there to assist the player to finish the game and keeps saying what we have to do (And I find this utterly annoying) they have some incredible casual talk, like, "I dont care if the whole world hates you Light, i'll be by your side"

Lumina cutscene

THAT WAS SUPER GOOD, HOLYYYYY.

Well, in one of the interactions with Lumina where she is trying to convince us that Benivelzhe is manipulating us with a Fake Serah, Lightning starts to belive her and gets really mad at her god saying that she was building a contigence plan and is willing to kill Bhenivelze, until Lumina says that Hope is a fake too...

Lightning reaction... DAMNNN

And then Lumina asks

"Would you be able to kill Hope if you need ?"

Lightning close every glimpse of feeling and answer:

"Do you think im not ?

Lumina is so clever that she reads her in a instant and starts to laugh --- BTW, Lumina is nothing but another part o a whole, she is Lightning aswell, WHY WE HAVE THIS REACTION by her part ?? (hehe)

FangxVanille moment in the cathedral (I know that this is my Hoperai post, but that was lit )

Hope (God Mode) I kind knew that he was going to be used by Bhenivelze as a vessel because I saw a few spoilers, but there is one thing that I dont understand --- WHY THE FUCK NO ONE SAYS ANYTHING WHEN THEY SEE HOPE ?? THEY WERE FRIENDS FOR FUCKING SAKE--- Even when is just Fang in the wildlands, Hope and her NEVER interact, she doesnt it even bother to ask " who are talking to Lightning in the phone?"

And finally the ending, Lightning defeat the evil god of light, and is willing to be the new Etro taking care of the darkness flow, but there is something here, a moment where she sees fake Serah and Lumina, and we discover that God never took her feelings, that was always her, she had shut down her feelings a long time ago to become stronger

Note: In the middle of the game we see that she is willing to die, and if you see the loading screens you see the same info.

And she fuse with Lumina, and after all the things she heard from fake Serah she is scared... Her feelings that she always repressed was back to her and she felt alone, darkness consuming her and there is tears, so many tears until...

FINALLY, FINALLY, the one who saves everyone was saved, he sacrificed his chance to be born in the new world with his parent, to save the woman that he lovessssss

I dont know what to say, this is just a bunch of notes of me bamblimg some things, but im so glad that she was saved, that she didnt feel scared, that he came back for her.

There is that quote from FFXIII where Vanille talk about Eclair.

"When the fear sank in, it tore us apart. Lightning was hurting but none of us could see it"

This is different now, he can see it, he knows that she was scared, that she deservs to be saved and loved, that she needs someone to watch her back !!!!

Hoperai is kind of Canon and I loved thst ending, most amazing CGI ever.

Side quests: I know that with the timer this game gets a little trick with the side quest, but there is some random moments here.

Olga, the singer

I've encountered a quest about a woman looking for her lover, and we learn that she is a singer but cant sing without the lyrics of the man she loves , after we find him we complete the quest, there will be a song (requested by Lumina) and I saw Hoperai all over it, okay, Light says "Serah loved this song" but the lyrics were all about Hope and Light.

Btw, I can totally see mama Farron singing this to their daughters, and Lumina kind is Lightning, so she knows that this is her favorite song aswell.

The one that we have to find the special flower for the chocoboo

Ha, who would say that we would be hearing that Lightning sucks at cooking ? Well, she admits that the only thing she knows how to cook is Beheamoth steak in a campfire

And we get to hear she trying to talk to her chocoboo saying "Kweh Kweh" such lovely moment and Hope was hearing everything

Gordon Gourmet

Well, this quest has and amazing ending, like super wow, after we taste the the gourmet recipe Lightning is amazed, she says that is probably the best thing she ever ate, so, Hope got curious and they start a conversation: (my memory is not great, but it goes like this)

Hope: That food is that good ?

Lightning: Do you want me to pack some for you?(such a wonderful waifu)

Hope: No thanks, but sometime I want to taste something made by you

Lightning: Well, Im not the best chef... I never spent much time in the kitchen, but if you like, I do a Behemoth steak by the campfire that is really good.

(This is the SECOND TIME in the game that she says that she can cook Behemoth) 😂

Chocoboo clothes

After a lot of "Chow chow choco chow" we win a nice outfit from the Chocoboo girl, Hope got a little bit excited and says that she must look really good on it, they have a nice conversation after.

Adornments

Hope jokes that Light should wear a lot of endornemts, to attrack more people to save.

Here we see that Light is pretty humble when people say that she is beautiful, she doesnt see herself as the perfect looking woman that she is.

Sazhs quest / Kid who always steals shit from us

I like this moment for a reason, thoose quests make Hope and/or Light relate to their situation, I will make a super post about this later and this is pretty important.

After Sazhs quest, in Ark Hope stops Lightning and revels a little bit about his situation with his father and how he was raised, Lightning stands quiet and just listen.

After we see a kid (the little shit who steals from us) and deliver the letter from his father, Lightning says how hard was for her to lose both of her parents, Hope just listen.

Soooo, this is it, I loved the game (hope you loved too), I still feel that Watanabe was not brave enough, he could made Hope an a adult in the thirdy game and put some scenes where he save her with a KISS (FRENCH PLEASE) but he made Tracer of memories to make more clear that Hope really have feelings for her and that she is going after him in the new world.

Note : im making a super post about them and I just want to thank this amazing tag/fandom, I know that this game is old and not so many are here now, but you all left soo many good things here and im really thankful.

hey any of you wanna hear about my shitty christmas gift that just gave me three heart attacks?

my ex’s dad got me a plant pot speaker for christmas. It’s a cute lil pot that you can put plants in, but it also doubles as a speaker via bluetooth.

well i just moved into a new place and dug it out, so i thought i’d actually plant sth in it. and so i did, with a little soil and water and cuttings from a bigger plant i have. it looked real cute and i felt really pleased with myself, until half an hour ago

as i was going to bed, and i noticed a strange light in my living room. see, the pot lights up when turned on, or when it plays music. i live alone. no one turned it on. yet there it was, happily lighting up the room.

so ofc i go over to the pot to see wtf is up, and all hell broke loose.

i hadn’t even touched the fuckin thing and it suddenly started blaring happy birthday at me. now this pot has an extra fancy lil feature: there’s a touch sensor inside the pot, and when you touch it or the plant you’ve put in there, it plays music from a selection of traditional songs. in this case, happy birthday.

and now, because i planted a plant in the plant pot (who fuckin knew), the sensor is being touched all the time by the soil in there. now it’s not supposed to react if there’s no movement, but this thing is not of the highest quality so there you have it, happy birthday is now blaring at full volume in my living room, at midnight.

i try to turn it off. it doesn’t work. i pick it up. it’s wet.

there must be a leak somewhere inside the pot (nevermind that it’s the whole purpose of the thing to keep water away from the electronic bit jfc), and the water damaged the electronics. so much water in fact that it got to the actual speaker.

now i dunno about y’all but i’d never heard what happens to a speaker when it gets logged with water before. it’s hell. it’s the loudest possible screeching sound mixed with ever louder interference noise. it’s loud enough to wake my downstairs neighbours. i’m dying inside. i look for the battery slot. there isn’t one. it’s a rechargeable fuckin thing with no way to take it apart.

finally, it stops. i take it to my room just in case. i’m worried.

twenty minutes later, it happens again. happy birthday and live broadcast from hell. i empty the pot. i manage to get some water out. it stops. i breathe a sigh of relief. i go to bed.

and ten minutes later, here we go again. i’m desperate. i’m considering throwing out the window, but it looks sturdy. it’s a plant pot from hell that wants to destroy my sleep and my reputation with my new neighbors.

i have to kill it.

i smother it with pillows until the noise stops again. i go to the kitchen with the pot. i get my slacentrifuge. it’s basically a big pot. iremove the plastic grid bit. it’s now a bigger pot. i fill it with water and submerge satan and china’s love child. it bubbles for an incredibly long time. i am at peace, safe in the knowledge that i murdered my christmas gift and can now rest.

alas.

i still take it to my room because idk what this thing is made of and i don’t wanna die yet

and i shit you not guys. it’s been in there for 10 minutes. any iphone would already be in technology heaven, living its best life. this thing is still lighting up. it’s not making any sound but it’s not dead.

When I was younger my dad would watch Star Wars and I would kinda, not really watch (lol) and I have memories of certain scenes but never really knew wtf was happening. And a few years ago my little brother was getting into it and watched all of them and I tried to watch but I just couldn't get into it. I feel like I'm the only person who doesn't like it😩

I did the same thing, my mom loved anything 80’s and so I watched them but I only remembered the most random scraps of information or scenes. One of my best friends now is a huge fan and I needed to watch the original 3 for something unrelated. I told her that I was going to watch them and that I might as well just get caught back up and asked what order to watch all of the movies in. She made me this incredibly detailed shared iphone notes list with Clone Wars episodes, Bad Batch episode, Rebels episodes, etc. It helped having someone who is so passionate about it guide me through. But it’s not for everyone! I realized how much I love it and certain characters, and I’m happy I have another thing to enjoy so much. :)

came into existence following a discussion between Edward Eugen and some friends. They wanted to know which Screen Glass was best for gaming. Edward realized there must be a lot of people trying to figure out what “the best thing for X” is.

Many people just go with whatever product their friends recommend, without doing any research at all. This is understandable. Not everyone has the time to do their own research and read hundreds of reviews.

That discussion Edward had with his friends about the best gaming Screen Glass ended in an electronic store. They looked at thirty-six Screen Glass. Some were good and some were great. Some were junk, some were very expensive. After spending a few hours in the store, Edward left with nothing except a great idea for a website.

i don’t know much about indian politics, but knowing that modi is far right, promotes religious secularism and is/was trying to become a dictator (wanting to cancel term limits on being a prime minister) tells me all i need to know. like he refused to enforce curfew or any lockdown rules in the second wave after multiple people had told him to do so! he could’ve prevented this so easily and get chose to do nothing. anyway he pisses me the fuck off.

the sweaty from laughing to hard is so accurate. istg they do nothing at every event. i get the acting different cause your from the us part. i pretty much grew up here since i was a baby, so it took me longer to notice. they tend to be a bit more polite maybe cause they could get an iphone or something lol. (also i’m pretty young so i can’t give them any gossip or dirt about myself).

She won Eurovision, but can she win us over?

Jessica Doyle: True story: twenty years ago I got back to Grenoble, after a weekend away with the other kids in my study-abroad group, to find my (Orthodox, Lubbavitcher, Sephardic) host mom grinning. "Israel won Eurovision," she explained. Last I heard at least one of her four kids had moved to Israel with their families; and I worry sometimes, in the face of no direct evidence whatsoever, that such a move had more to do with increasing anti-Semitism in France than with their personal circumstances. (Reading this, written in 2012, made me simultaneously nostalgic and sad. But there's still a Chabad in Grenoble, yay!) And now there's "Toy," which is too gleefully, deliberately mindless to lend itself well to a Zionist analysis -- and God bless, at a time when even poor Natalie frickin' Portman can't pass the Zionist-Enough test, that somebody decided Israel was confident enough to risk a Eurovision anthem that didn't lend itself well to a Zionist analysis. And God bless all those European voters who were willing, at a time when the personal has to be political (and when Lorde's camp apparently can't tell the difference between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem), to forget about boycotting, divesting, and sanctioning for a moment and cluck along. Jonathan Bogart: During the final ceremony, I thumbnailed Israel's entry as "Meghan Trainor meets Reggie Watts," an uncharitable but not inaccurate reading of Netta's gleefully unhip beat-box looping grafted onto proudly full-figured but otherwise embarrassing empowerment anthems. (I should perhaps have added Beth Ditto for sheer vocal power.) But it was the Wonder Woman line that made me pause, because Israel's soft-power propaganda campaign has had its clearest advocate over the last several years in Gal Gadot. Like Gadot, Netta served her mandatory term in the IDF; unlike her, she served exclusively in military bands. It would be foolish to reduce my response to Netta entirely to her nation's crimes (if it came to that, few of us could escape judgment), but I can't help wondering how complicit she, and all of us (I saw Wonder Woman opening weekend), are. Leonel Manzanares de la Rosa: I love the fact that Netta's "Toy" won Eurovision, yet I hate the idea of Israel hosting next year. The most brilliant track conquered Europe, rightfully, but I have a huge problem with my favorite music event of the year taking place in an apartheid state. That being said, there's so much going on in the song, and it's all so freakin' exciting, I don't know exactly where to begin. Okay, the song is built around a vocal looper, and Netta's incredible acrobatics, chicken noises, percussive clicks and sheer rhythmic brilliance, but there's also a bona fide ethno-pop banger underneath, in which we can hear her deliver all sorts of ear-catching melodies (even going full Migos flow for a while). And just because she's that much of a badass, there's a full-on dabke break at the beginning of the second verse, a homage to the rich musical traditions of the Levant. "Toy" is a work of genius; both accessible and experimental, both ethnic and cosmopolitan, in line with contemporary trends, but compositionally in a league of its own. It was the best song, by far, in Lisbon, a clear pre-show favorite, and it took the crystal microphone. It's also a well-deserved fuck you to last year's winner Salvador Sobral's tone-deaf, unfortunate "fireworks vs. feelings" statements; not only because Salvador himself hated the song, but because Netta is indeed an incredibly accomplished musician, and however funny and bubbly "Toy" is, everything about it is as "real music" as that jazz interval show with Caetano Veloso in the Grand Final. Last year I mentioned how the contest will still be a big, beautiful, camp, queer party, and that music can be fireworks, feelings, and fun. "Toy" is all that, and much, much more. [9]

Katherine St Asaph: Douze points to... takes! So many separate vectors for takes that the intended #MeToo take doesn't register at all. Or any song. [2]

William John: The zany affectations and gurned squeaks bring to mind the way in which Björk is conceptualised by those who've never before heard a Björk song as the embodiment of unexplainable eccentricity. But the more obvious reference point for "Toy" is the singer previously of Karmin (who, as an aside, is now masquerading in blackface under a new nom de plume). In the same way that Karmin's showy YouTube cover clips endeavoured to reduce rap to a game of tongue-twisters, performer Netta here overwhelms her song's attempt to champion autonomy with garish, irritating theatrics. Will Adams: The studio version of "Toy" is a stormer, zooming from section to section with off-the-wall production so fast it's hard to keep up with. We've got Pikachus and teddybears and iPhone dings and Netta's committed performance all leading up to an uplifting breakdown that quickly swerves into Arrested Development-style mockery of the stupid boy. The song itself is great. But Eurovision songs don't exist in a bubble; they incorporate staging, choreography, styling choices, the pressure to play to juries and audiences' expectation of what Eurovision "zaniness" looks like. And so we get bullshit like the Netherlands's tone-deaf entry and Israel's Stefani-esque grossness. The problem here is that it's 2018 and people are still trotting out that old "what's WRONG with paying tribute to OTHER cultures it's not offensive it's BEAUTIFUL" chestnut. And in a year that was very subdued by Eurovision's standards, it's too egregious to ignore. [6]

Iain Mew: When TV commentators on the semi-final promised upcoming chicken noises, my thoughts turned immediately to Wang Rong. Little did I realise how apt that would prove, with the performance of "Toy" being every "check out this Japanese/Korean/Chinese pop culture, it's so WTF!" article in stage form, but this time skipping the need for anyone East Asian to even be involved. There could be something in separating out "Toy" from its staging, up to the point of Netta explaining that "Baka is also 'stupid' in Japanese" and the realisation that treating Japanese as interchangeable with animal sounds is integral to the song too. [2]

Edward Okulicz: Netta is a superlative performer, and "Toy" has an actual message, but it's taken a really weird, silly song, musically, to bring both of those out. The way she clucks out those syllables while throwing in actual words between the clucks is evidence of impressive verbal dexterity. She's all sing-song in the pre-chorus, and spitting fire in the actual chorus, so it's not just dexterity, it's ability to switch acting personas so playfully that's also astonishing. The song makes me like Netta. But I don't love the song itself, because the chorus with its "boy/toy" rhyme feels very childish and I keep waiting for the string swoops to turn into "7 Nation Army" -- now there's a killer bootleg waiting to happen. As frequently occurs with Eurovision songs, the on-stage production had some questionable aesthetic choices, but I can't say I've ever seen a performer on stage quite like her. [5]

Alex Clifton: God, it's nice to have a fun winner for the first time in a few years, isn't it? Don't get me wrong -- I liked Portugal's song last year, and "1944" is a gorgeous song loaded with pain -- but I come to Eurovision for silly, fizzy pop. "Toy" is an earworm for the ages that makes you want to dance, and also feels welcome in the age of #MeToo. "I'm not your toy" is a sentence I've thought as I've dealt with boys who somehow forget that women have interiority and lives not related to them, but rarely have I felt it as joyfully as when Netta yelps it. Empowerment songs are weird because for all the inspiring lyrics, they rarely have the actual undercurrent of power that should accompany them. Thankfully, Netta's got charisma and force and sells this both as a dance song as well as a warning to the guys who may try to cross her. [8]

There’s a 99% chance I’m overreacting and overthinking this but here goes.

I think my brother is turning into a spoiled brat. I don’t know if this is the age or what but the kid has had a pretty hardcore case of the “gimmes” for awhile now and I feel like he’s old enough to know that the things he’s asking for are unrealistic and over the top. I asked my dad for Christmas gift ideas and aside from a Rick and Morty sweatshirt, he has yet to offer up anything in their price range. Like, not by a long shot. My stepmom did say that they rarely say no to him, especially not on the grounds of “We can’t afford that” because a.) he’s a spoiled only child and b.) for the most part he has asked for things they can afford, or are at least willing to blow money on. I don’t know if she thinks acknowledging this is enough but I’m kind of waiting for them to do something.

Over the summer we took him to my company summer picnic: a tailgate followed by an Earthquakes game. We were also given spending money per person, and of course we covered all the food and drink he wanted. This was followed by a sleepover (with swimming and movies and delivery pizza) at our place. Yet he kept comparing what we had to other people and basically acting like we were gross embarrassments to him. It just felt really ungrateful and shitty when we were trying to have a fun family weekend and all he would say is, “You need a new car. Something nicer. Jake Paul has a Maserati!”

Maybe it’s because my mom constantly shared her financial stress with me that I never really asked for things or felt comfortable just throwing around demands, but it blows my mind that he feels 100% fine asking for an iPhone X and saying their TV is too small/old (it’s neither) and they should buy a new one. WTF?

I want him to be aware that he has more than he needs and his wants are few. I want him to be grateful and compassionate. He is a generous kid and incredibly kind and so these worries are probably unfounded but I also know he’s at that tipping point where our opinions carry less weight and he’s susceptible to peer pressure and wants to fit in and be cool.

Is this a phase? Or are my parents creating a monster?

i make them on my phone using free apps.

its an iphone 6s, not even the newest phone wtf.

i mostly just use PhotoshopMix, which lets you combine two pictures, put a tiny bit of one picture onto another picture, so you can do horrible things like, make baekhyun bald, or give all of the members mullets. this app is incredible though, you can layer as many images as you need and blend them together. there was a little learning curve but you can zoom in pretty closely on anything to get it to look great using nothing other than your damn finger. It’s a free app but i did have to register to use it.

and then for the fonts and fine tuning i use PicsArt, though i wish it had more fonts. PicsArt does this color replace thing that’s really cool and i like this feature a lot. i like to change the colors on the images sometimes to match the overall theme, or remove bits of color and this app is great for that sort of thing.

5 Things I Learned At The FTC's Online Ticket Sales Workshop...

Last night I jotted down a few ideas that came out of the FTC’s online ticket sales workshop yesterday.

After sleeping on the subject, I’ve come up with a few things that I think are important from what I saw and heard yesterday, but from the ongoing opportunities and challenges in the world of tickets.

Here are 5 things that I definitely learned yesterday:

Nothing is likely to change and that seems like the wrong response:

At the end of the day, I felt like the event was the FTC checking a box…not like there would be any sort of significant action taken after the event.

What I learned was that without some sort of enforcement of existing laws and standards, things aren’t likely to change…or, not for the better, at least.

A few times the idea of needing someone to call “balls and strikes” or be “judge and jury” for the way tickets are sold came up.

At a time when the stomach for antitrust enforcement seems to be creeping up on the big technology companies, the idea that Google is going to decide what is in the best interests of the market seems dangerous.

The idea that without some sort of penalties or enforcement that online platforms might all stop trying to give their companies advantages by discounting ticket prices while increasing fees seems a bit farfetched.

And, to hope that everyone will just play nice…seems like wishful thinking.

I’m not certain what the proper response to something like this is, but I think you start by looking at the laws that are already on the books and enforcing those.

Defining the situations you want to control for or improve and working to either use the rules that are on the books now or work towards other laws that will help eliminate undesired behaviors seems like a second step.

The wrong response seems to be to do nothing and hope things get better…of course, I live in Washington, DC so the idea that anyone will take proactive action is nothing more than a fantasy.

Consumers often felt like marks for many people on stage:

There was one point in the program where the idea of fees and fee calculations came up and the way fees are charged and calculated is important.

What was amazing to me was how it felt like the consumer was positioned as too stupid to understand anything…and it felt like it was coming from both sides.

I’m decidedly pro-consumer because I realize that if you don’t have customers, you don’t have anything.

And, I think one of the reasons that the ticketing marketplace is so broken is due to the fact that too often the customer is viewed as a mass or blob and not as a person.

In general, if you are asking me what you want to see happen for consumers, I’d say a few things…this isn’t complete:

Require that full-price is disclosed up front. I get it that this isn’t always the case when you buy something because you buy a new iPhone and you see the list price, but not the price inclusive of tax. At the same time, the number of fees charged on all sides of the ticket business is crazy and confusing.

Customers have the chance to buy refund protection, exchange tickets, or just get refunds as a course of business: Customers are having to make purchases earlier and earlier. In many cases, people can’t even rightly know what is going to happen so far in the future like a new job, a business trip, an illness and they have no recourse in their ticket purchase. That shouldn’t be the case. There are a number of options and the options should be automatic.

What is for sale should be clear: A WTF?! moment was when transparency in what is for sale was framed as something that data has never proved is beneficial for consumers…seriously, WTF?! Part of the reason customers are so angry is that they have no clue what is for sale and when.

This is only 3 things, but it is a start.

David Marcus is incredibly quotable:

I appreciated the fact that David Marcus was very upfront about a lot of things. Because most of the time people go up on-stage in these things and don’t provide any context or useful insight.

I agreed with him that the term “Slow Ticketing” has been co-opted to mean market pricing.

It also seems like in far too many instances that this market pricing only works in one direction, up. Those are my words, not his.

I was amazed at the 10 billion BOT attacks figure for a couple of reasons:

I was surprised by the size of the number because it is really hard to imagine what that number looks like. I did the math and that is over 27 million BOT attacks a day.

I was also sort of surprised that the number wasn’t higher.

I was also surprised how difficult it is to define a good BOT vs a bad BOT and control for things you hope to have occurred.

I shouldn’t have been surprised that he said he hasn’t seen data that it would be helpful to consumers that they know how many tickets are available in an on-sale.

Why?

Well, I mean that’s his job. That information wouldn’t be beneficial to his business because as Bob Roux mentioned, “most shows don’t sell out.”

This is where I do get the justification for David’s comments if people knew how many tickets were on-sale for shows that aren’t considered “hot” it might drive the demand down even further.

There was also the conversation around behavior and how one of the goals of some of Ticketmaster’s programs is to eliminate the advantage of speed. This was interesting in the context of my conversation with Richard Howle a few months back where we talked about the fact that tickets is the one business that really designs the selling of our products for our benefit and not the benefit of the consumer.

It was nice hear him admit that you’re likely never going to find a way to 100% solve the problem because in many cases the perfect is the enemy of the good, but from my research I’m not necessarily certain that the Verified Fan program is reducing the impact on the secondary market and concerts as much as aggressive pricing is, but that is a different topic.

While we live in America where everything is bigger and better, we need to look to other countries for ideas:

Parul Shah shared how the UK is dealing with the secondary market and I was impressed with the depth of their actions.

I also was embarrassed as an American when I thought about how seriously other countries take consumer protection compared to America.

For any host of issues, I think we have to look beyond our borders for solutions that are taking hold or being used in other large markets.

I mean, the UK shows that you can demand more transparency, more responsibility, and proactive measures to ensure that customers are protected.

Which was amusing in the context of the panels where almost everyone was trying to point the finger at someone else.

The big topic wasn’t on the table yesterday: demand generation:

Someone mentioned that over 30% of sports ticket inventory is available on the secondary market…that number felt low to me from my own research, but I’ll go with it for sake of argument.

When you realize that most of the issues and challenges being raised revolved solely around the hottest tickets, you realize a couple of things pretty quickly:

There aren’t that many hot events in the course of a year.

We have to work to protect consumers when these events are happening because the fraud and deceit that occurs aren’t just ticket seller issues, but are issues that pop up when you have any in-demand product that has a finite supply.

Demand is broken in tickets across the board because right now everyone is waiting on “hot”!

It is interesting for me to sit in something like an FTC workshop on online ticket sales because I’m not a huge technologist.

I know the basics, but I’m a marketer.

I generate demand for products and services.

What I really came away with is that the entirety of the ticket industry is fighting over a small portion of the industry when the real opportunity is in filling some of the billions of dollars in unsold inventory. (I think Stephen Glicken pegged it at $26 Billion, but it could have been way more. I’ll go with the lower number here.)

I know that people are always thinking and working on demand generation, but I think this is one that needs a holistic effort and the reality is that the music industry hasn’t been investing in artist development the way they should for years now.

Without investing heavily in artist development, the engine that drives ticket sales never gets rolling the way it goes.

So you have this boom or bust cycle where if you are Pearl Jam, you can sell out a tour instantly. If you are Garth Brooks, you can sell out city after city, multiple dates. If you are Greta Van Fleek you catch fire and are forced into buildings arenas before you have fully developed a fan base and the chops needed to fill the arena because you are “hot”.

Demand generation wasn’t on the menu at yesterday’s FTC workshop, but it was like the shadow looming over the proceedings.

For me, it was interesting to be there and see what people were up to, talking about, and willing to share.

I learned a lot and this is just a little bit of it.
