Random question, but how do you feel abt ella enchanted, if you've read/watched it? do you think the movie did the book justice? personally i think it would've been a more popular movie if it was more romantic fantasy like stardust is, instead of a fantasy comedy movie
I FORGOT ABT THIS ASK UNTIL JUST NOW MY BAD FAM,,
EDIT: i didn’t think i was gonna go off this much when i started writing my response to this, but here we are lmao oops
ok so to start, i love ella enchanted - both the book and the movie. i watched the movie first and read the book not long after, and i have the childhood nostalgia filter on for both of them so i have that bias.
based on the plot alone, the movie absolutely did not do the book justice. besides the names and the fact that ella was obedient, pretty much nothing was the same. the movie was way modernized language-wise and had a lot of pop culture references that are still fun imo. i’m just gonna list some shit i remember about the book to the best of my ability (it’s been like a year or so since my last re-read so i might not remember everything)
in the book...
ella was like 13 or smth when she first met char who was 14 or 15 i think
mandy was an older kitchen fairy
ella was forced to go to finishing school with hattie and olive
hattie was dramatic af and wore a wig
ella Snatched that wig when she left the school in the dead of night
ogres were actually bad
ella had a talent for speech imitation, which ultimately saved her from the ogres as she could imitate them well enough to persuade them to spare her
both of char’s parents (king & queen) were alive and there was no uncle edgar or heston
ella made char laugh a lot as they got to spend more time with each other (there was stair rail sliding incident if i remember correctly)
when ella found lucinda again, lucinda promised to spend 3 months obedient and then 3 months as a squirrel
lucinda got a taste of her own medicine and realized she hadn’t been bestowing gifts but curses
she felt awful about what she’d done to ella and many like her, but she couldn’t take it back even when she wanted to
ella fell in love with char but knew they couldn’t be together because of the gift/curse
there were 3 masquerade balls she attended so she could see char again but she went anonymously every time (changed her voice with her talent so he couldn’t recognize her)
ella broke her own curse by yelling that she wouldn’t marry char when he asked
and then she did marry him when she realized she was free
in the movie...
ella and char were both 18-21 years old - ella was in college and char had no idea she existed until they literally bumped into each other as he was running away from the “prince char fan club” that was chasing him
mandy was young and hot for some reason and had a boyfriend named benny she accidentally turned into a talking book who was like a magic mirror and could show you anything you asked
ella’s dad cared about her way more than in the book
ella ran away from home to find lucinda and took benny the boyfriend book with her
she met an elf named slannen who joined her
note: neither benny nor slannen were in the book and aren’t treated much more than comic relief
char had an uncle edgar who acted as king before char’s coronation
char didn’t know that edgar killed his father and wanted to kill char too so he could keep being king
edgar also had a snake named heston who was cgi and talked
ella almost got eaten by ogres but char saved her and accompanied her and slannen to the giants’ wedding
which was where anne hathaway as ella sang “somebody to love” which was honestly an iconic scene that still sometimes gives me secondhand embarrassment (i mean that as a compliment)
ella went back to the palace with char to try to look up lucinda in the library records
edgar found her and ordered her to kill char the night of the ball for him so he wouldn’t have to do it
ella had slannen chain and lock her to a tree so she physically could not harm char
lucinda showed up and freed her against her will and ordered her to go to the ball
char whisked ella away and proposed to her and she almost killed him but broke her curse before she could
she got thrown in jail for attempted murder
slannen, two giants, three ogres, and benny the boyfriend book formed a squad to save ella so she could save char from edgar
edgar almost succeeded but ella used her sweet martial arts skills to beat the shit out of his guards
edgar accidentally knocked himself out by putting the poisoned crown that was meant for char on his own head
ella and char get married then sing “don’t go breaking my heart” happily ever after the end
oh yeah and mandy turned benny the boyfriend book back into benny the boyfriend man and slannen got with that one hot giant
so anyway i still really love the movie even though it was a hot mess LMAO. it probably would have been a more popular movie if they stuck closer to the book’s plot lines. idk what the producers wanted but it clearly wasn’t most of anything actually in the book lol. not gonna lie tho anne hathaway and hugh dancy had some Mad Chemistry and that fireplace kiss scene was just *chef kiss*
i think if they had given ella and char more romantic scenes like that and given them a slower relationship build rooted in friendship like in the book, it’d be a better romance. and like, some parts were funny but we really didn’t need slannen and probably not benny. benny the boyfriend book was only essential because he was ella’s map. slannen was comedic relief and added nothing to the plot. just. so many movie things didn’t make sense lmao, but it’s not the worst romcom i’ve seen!
in conclusion, i like ella enchanted. it’s one of the most unique adaptations of cinderella out there and i appreciate gail carson levine for creating ella’s world. i will always enjoy fairytales and fairytale retellings like ella enchanted. this ask has inspired me to go re-read it again.
(also, i don’t think any book to movie fantasy romance adaptation can compare to stardust because it’s just that good. neil gaiman really blessed us!)

dark forest trainee headcanons
only the oots ones
also i’ll only put “reason for training” if there was no canon reason
also long post
THUNDERCLAN
ivypool reason for training: n/a - very tall and lean. she has a couple scars and dulled blue eyes, which were brighter when she was younger - she would’ve liked to be friends with sunstrike and icewing esp sun - when dovewing left, part of ivypool’s anger came from the fact she’s mad at herself for not having a better relationship w her sister - the dark forest training has probably affected her the most out of all the df trainees - she avoided birchfall in the df bc seeing her own dad there rlly hurt - when stressed in battle, she instinctively uses dark forest moves but stops the moment she realises it - she loves fernsong so much they have a very healthy n loving relationship
blossomfall reason for training: there is a canon reason but i also hc that she used the dark forest as a way to let out emotion - so she was actually very emotional and keeping it all pent up wasn’t good for her - she trusted bumblestripe but talking it out didn’t always work so she started going to the df - but then bumblestripe started getting distant bc of that so she started using the df training as her main way to let out stress & emotion - this means she actually has more scars than ivypool bc she pushed herself so much and just kept going - she has a big claw-mark across her face - def started crushing on ivypool real hard as training progressed - took thornclaw as a mate to try n get over ivy but that didn’t rlly work. she still cares for thornclaw & her kits tho
thornclaw reason for training: literally just wanted to be a better, stronger warrior - always has tired eyes - always cared for ashfur and tried to help him through his issues with squirrelflight. however, he always knew that ash was capable of something (not necessarily attempted murder, but something) so after ashfur’s death there was always this thought at the back of his mind that it was more than just a cold-blooded killer - he’s not an idiot he knew there was something off about the df to begin with just not that - tried to avoid the other trainees in the df - constantly feels guilty that he didnt catch on earlier (for both ash’s death n the df thing)
birchfall reason for training: to become a better warrior & make his family proud - he is. small. like dovewing. just so small,,, - always kept some of his kithood naivety which is a trait whitewing both loves and hates in him & also why he was so oblivious to the df’s true intentions - wanted to spend time w ivypool in the df so when she started avoiding him it rlly hurt :( - he loves whitewing a lot he gets all soft and mushy around her and he just,,,, loves her,,,,, so much,,,,
mousewhisker reason for training: particularly bc he wanted to be as cool as berrynose but also bc he wanted to see minnowtail more - he was soft,,, sweet,,, just so pure before the training - after it he was more hot-headed and frustrating - loved minnowtail so much - love love loved his twin sister hazeltail as well - looked up to berrynose a lot
RIVERCLAN
minnowtail reason for training: blamed herself for tumblekit’s death & wanted to prove that she could still be a good warrior (also mousewhisker) - so fluffy - very firm, strict and cold, she doesn’t show her emotions much - but mousewhisker was so sweet how could she not fall for him - her dad is webfoot of windclan but she doesnt rlly know about him since it was a short-lived relationship between dawnflower and him - she misses her mum & brother so much - willowshine always help n supports her tho,,
icewing reason for training: to protect her family - beetlewhisker’s death hit her REALLY hard and the only reason she didn’t stop training is because she wanted to avenge him - she became overly sensitive and “loyal” to the dark forest to keep up an act, but never felt any loyalty to them at all - even after she was honest with mintfur, he still loved & understood her  - she still misses beetlewhisker and almost wanted to call one of the kits in her second litter beetlekit
beetlewhisker reason for training: his mom was doing it, why couldnt he? - had a v good relationship with his family - doesnt regret speaking up. he believes it had to be said - often bonds with hollyleaf in stc over their loyalty to the warrior code (nerds) - he uh,,, he dies in the last hope. following the norwegian version of river of fire, sneezecloud is harepaw’s mentor instead & that one brief appearance in that one avos book is just,,,,,, gone ok
hollowflight reason for training: he just wanted to impress his mentor and stand up to some bullies man :( - he had a close relationship w his mentor, reedwhisker. he was almost like a father-figure - was interested in becoming leader one day - he was always quite innocent and nervous but once he started training in the df he became a lot more reckless and argumentative
SHADOWCLAN
applefur reason for training: wanted to be stronger (like her brother) & also had a tiny crush on birchfall - after marshkit’s death, she got a lot closer to toadfoot - had some serious self-doubt issues esp in the dark forest & realising she had betrayed her clan didnt help - misses birchfall a lot - she kinda just wishes the clans could be at peace
redwillow reason for training: he thought the clans were weak + some personal issues with blackstar - he felt genuine loyalty to the other cats in the dark forest, even the trainees. they were like family to him since he didn’t really have any - he and blackstar never really got along. redwillow looked down on him and saw him as weak. he challenged his orders a lot and felt as though blackstar was restricting him, esp when blackstar gave him a half-blind mentor - blackstar originally disliked how much redwillow argued with him & also before of how rude he was to whitewater constantly, and then also came to dislike him more because he looks a little like sol
ratscar reason for training: he wanted to face his fears of getting hurt - he prefers dodging attacks. this is partially bc getting such a big scar on his side at a young age made him not want to get any more injuries - after/during his training in the df he did get braver - he’s always been fierce, stubborn and bold but he got more arrogant with training - he loves his SISTER & they would prob die for each other
tigerheart reason for training: he was cocky and ambitious. training in the df intrigued him as well - there was a brief moment he thought of fighting for the df - he held a grudge against ivypool for a long time but loved dovewing enough not to act on it - even after he got over his grudge he wasnt ivypool’s biggest fan. the feeling was mutual.
WINDCLAN
sunstrike reason for training: she wanted to be a better warrior sure but it was mostly to see cute girls - im not a huge fan of her canon design so she’s probably a calico with more yellowy patches rather than orange. still got that forehead spot tho - a Big Lesbian - was definitely crushing hard on furzepelt  - always impressed by ivypool and likely had a small crush on her as well but she was too caught up on furzepelt to rlly think abt it - ok let’s be honest here she probably crushed on every girl who was training in the df just furzepelt was the one that really made her floaty
furzepelt reason for training: just some grudges - def had some feelings for sunstrike - was p good friends with antpelt - was never a huge thunderclan fan and antpelt’s death only set that dislike more in place - thought onestar was dumb for multiple reasons
breezepelt reason for training: n/a - had the tiniest crush on antpelt but pushed it away bc “love is weak”  - cared about his nightcloud so much but only ever showed affection away from his clan for the same reason - softened up once his relationship with crowfeather was fixed - always loved heathertail, even when they were apprentices
antpelt reason for training: dislike for windclan & clanlife. he wanted to be stronger - he and breezepelt got along for several reasons - never enjoyed clanlife. he didn’t think it was right for him and being in the df really showed him that - his friendship with furzepelt was one of the only reasons he stayed
apparently larkwing was also a trainee but there were literally no mentions of her in the df so ??

green eyes, red handed (part 2)
Tumblr media
wherein y/n finds harry confusing. (college au, 2700 words)
[previous]
Y/N’s head swam as she walked out of class, full of education and politics and society.  They had a paper coming up, three topics possible from the entirety of the work, and she couldn’t figure how she’d be able to pick when she had so much to say about all of it.
“So, what are yeh thinking for the upcoming essay?  Worth fifteen percent, y’know.”
Y/N was startled to be addressed by the low, thick voice of the person she apparently bothered so much, and cut her eyes sideways as Harry bounded up beside her.  How fun, swinging back in the other direction.
“I was thinking of the one centering around justice,” she said warily.  She might wanna kill him half the time, but when they weren’t at each other’s throats he was a pretty good study partner, and Plato was not a joke.  “Figured that I could expand on the definition by taking the classical ambiguity of it.”
“Tha’s not a bad idea.”
“Yeah.  Do me a solid and don’t steal it, will ya?”
Harry laughed as Y/N raised an eyebrow in a perfect arch.  A girl down the hall fumbled her books.
“Now, now, didn’t say it was good, did I?” he quipped, tone remaining light.  Y/N could see this for what it was, the peace offering that followed every spat and kept them on careful even ground, but she was ready to accept it.  Their relationship had been like this for three years now, and she had learned how to prolong the amiable Harry that came between fights, and how much she preferred him.
“Fine then Plutarch, what’re you doing?”
“The use of fantastical arguments in philosophical debate.”
“Dense,” she said, surprised.  They only had about three thousand words, and he was certainly taking quite the bite.  It was a gentle reminder of how much was hiding in that thick skull of his.
“Behind this pretty face is quite th’ mind, Y/L/N,” Harry sighed dramatically, pushing the door open for them both.
“It’s behind a face anyway.”
“See I could get mad at tha’ comment, but because I’m a kind and gentle soul, I will instead do as Clark asked and pass along the message that everyon’s stoppin’ in Fleming and then settin’ up in Old Quad for lunch.”
Definitely offering the proverbial olive branch then.  Often Harry would skip letting her know when these plans would happen (and Ginny always forgot) and she’d make it halfway back to her apartment before she knew that her friends had snagged a coveted slice of lawn.  In return, Y/N offered him a careful smile and a thanks.  Harry quirked a corner of his mouth back, opened it to say something, but was interrupted before he could.
“Y/N!”
Turning about, she saw black hair, blue eyes, an unassuming smile.  It was Mitchell, from her Human Skeletal Biology course.  He was sweet, so sweet, but nice and naive had never much been her thing and as many times as she’d tried to let him down gently, he just kept coming back.
“Mitchell, hey,” she said, voice kind and decidedly lukewarm, turning back towards Fleming and a now farther ahead Harry as the new addition came to her pace.
“Hey!  I know you said you were busy last Thursday with schoolwork and all, but I thought new week, new schedule, right?”
Y/N bit her lower lip hard, frustration sparking in her gut.  No matter what she tried he wouldn’t take the hint, and she was inching ever closer to the cruelty of brutal honesty.  There were days where she just wanted to say yes, fine, let’s go!  But she knew how uncomfortable she would be saying yes, had been down that road before often enough to tell.  Sometimes people just weren’t compatible, and two conversations with this guy had told her that he didn’t have enough pushback to keep her interested.
“Listen, I-”
“”Oo’s this then?”
Y/N looked up at Harry, caught off guard by his sudden interest and the arm he’d thrown about her shoulder.  Casual physical contact wasn’t out of the question between them (they were in the same friend group after all) but the warm bicep pressing into the back of her neck was certainly more than usual.  She suppressed the urge to lean back into the touch.
“I- This is Mitchel.  We have ANT334 together,” she replied.
“Ah, Mitchell.  I remember hearin’ ‘bout this one.”
“This one?”  She could see Mitchell’s face turning, a sour expression creeping across his features as he repeated what Harry had said.
“Yeah mate, one of ‘er boys. What were yeh sayin’ though?”
Now Mitchell was positively frowning, mostly at Y/N.  “I- nevermind, actually.”  Though it was just the time for food he turned away, booking off down the hall towards the doors they had all just entered through and away from the student commons.  Y/N turned towards Harry, a confused look on her face.
“When did you ever hear me talk about him?”
“Y/L/N, yeh bitch about how he’s not gettin’ the message two t’ three times per hour every time he asks yeh out,”  he said, rolling his eyes.
“Yeah, but I never thought you actually listened.  Looks like I won’t have to worry about him anymore, anyhow,” she said, thinking with some measure of relief of the displeasure on Mitchell’s face.
“And we won’ have t’ listen t’yeh anymore. Everyone wins!  Now hurry up ‘n get yer food, I wanna get a spot in th’ shade before Todd sprawls out and declares it all as his.”
Instead of getting annoyed, Y/N picked up a sandwich and some juice and paid in an example of decision making in record time.  Harry was right, Todd was an absolute slut for getting out of the sun, and she wasn’t much for the heat that seemed to ramp up as summer folded into early fall.  She and Harry both got irritable in the heat, so shade was probably the best idea.  Harry seemed pleased to have her agreeing, and they walked out to their friends in a warm and unexpected peace.
Old Quad was beautiful.  Lush, bright green grass (and props to the grounds crew for that, because it was pretty well trafficked) boxed in by the big, old founding buildings of their school, all dark stones and gothic arches.  The corners left spaces to get in and out but it felt like a universe inside the universe of the school, filled with cool breezes and big trees and the noises of college students taking a breath between classes.  The ever present crowd of students fanned out across the lawn for the peak noon lunch hour, but the blindingly pale hand of Ginny waving ecstatically from under her favorite oak tree showed that their friends had grabbed prime seating.
“This way,” Y/N mumbled, grabbing Harry’s hand distractedly as people flowed around them.  Their friends liked to call Y/N the gazelle because of her careful feet and how good she was at picking through a crowd- ironic when compared to her inability to walk over flat ground but then there you were.  Harry, on the other hand, had enormous feet, both of which were left.  Last week he’d fallen on a girl and squashed her sandwich, and the starry eyes she’d given him had inflated his ego to truly unbearable proportions.
“Holding hands?  My god, maybe world peace is realistic after all,” Clark laughed as they walked up to the group, Ginny staring with raised brows at their connected hands.  Y/N rolled her eyes and plopped onto the blanket laid across the grass, leaving Harry to take his hand back.
“More like keeping him from taking out half the quad.  I’m fairly sure the lovely young lady from last week is still thinking of ways to incorporate falling into a pickup line.  If he dazzles any more that way, we’ll never have another lunch in peace,” she replied, plastic crinkling as she unwrapped her lunch.
“Not my fault tha’ these eyes make women fall in love, darlin’,” Harry replied smugly.  Y/N maintained eye contact with him as she took a large bite of her sandwich, chewing slowly.
“Nope, still wanna strangle you.  Who does that work on again?”
Todd sighed happily.  “God, Y/N, we need to bottle whatever keeps you from falling over sideways for this twat and vaccinate the rest of the campus with it.  You know that guy I’ve been trying to get closer to in physics, the cute tall one?  Came up to me and asked for Harry’s number this morning.”
“Well-” Ginny started, but Y/N was faster.
“Oh, not Andre, really?  I liked him, too.”
“I’m gonna ignore tha’,” Harry said breezily.  “Sorry though mate, ’s shit.”
“Yeah,” Todd shrugged.  “I gave it to him though.”
Idly, Y/N wondered what Harry might do.  Clark liked to say that Harry played with his food, never settling for long with one partner and keeping them on their toes if he ever took a brief landing, and she didn’t know if she could stand watching him flirt with the guy Todd had been on about for nearly a month now.  It seemed like the whole blanket agreed, breath held as they waited for Harry to reply.  Y/N could feel Ginny’s eyes on her.
“I’ll put in a good word for yeh then.”
Y/N’s phone buzzed in her pocket, undoubtedly from Ginny based on the elbow sneaking into her side, so she pulled it out to read.
>>babe u just visibly relaxed u have it SO BAD
>i was worried abt todd u absolute psycho
Ginny rolled her eyes, about to reply, when across the way Clark decided to ask “what’s so interesting there ladies?”  Her ginger head snapped up, almost hilariously conspicuous that they were discussing someone sitting on the blanket, and which meant assuredly that Y/N would have to save it.
“Your weak dick game, actually.”
Clark squeaked out a highly offended noise as Ginny dissolved into giggles, halfheartedly trying to convince him that that probably wasn’t what they were talking about, and Y/N was so amused by the overplayed outrage that she only barely noticed the boot nudging at her thigh.  It was Harry of course, poking at her with a delicately extended foot from where he was already draped in a long line on his side.  When she looked over, he beckoned, and since she was feeling generous she scootched over so they could talk.
“There’re free coffees for the next month of Classics with yer name on ‘em,” he said as she leaned down towards him, his breath blowing the ends of her hair like a light breeze.  Y/N gave him a doubtful look.
“That so?  What’s the catch then?”
“Yer notes.  Been readin’ em over your shoulder, ‘n they’re a damn sight more coherent than mine.  Jus’ lemme see ‘em to piece together my essay, that’s all I’m askin’.”  Y/N’s eyebrows stayed up, but she’d never been one to turn down caffeine and Harry didn’t skimp on good coffee.
“Make it coffee for the whole semester and I’ll keep letting you see them, how about that?”
Harry grinned, a certain amount of relief seeping through, and nodded enthusiastically.  From there it was easy to melt into a discussion about outlines, Y/N leaning down towards him to sketch out some tweaks on his main themes, Harry pushing up on an elbow to point at the book in her lap as he suggested the lines he thought would work best.  Neither saw it, but across the quad people were staring- here a sigh over Harry’s smile, there someone missing their mouth as Y/N brushed hair out of her face with a careless grace.
“I don’t mean to break up this weird, academic ménage à trois between you two and Plato, but Duncs just texted to plan next Monday Meal,” Todd called from across the blanket.
Monday Meal was a longstanding tradition among the friend group, masterminded and orchestrated by the fourth roommate in the cellblock, Duncan.  He was a nutrition sciences major possessed of serious doubts as to his friends ability to care for themselves, and he’d decided about halfway through their first year that if they all died of scurvy he’d feel in some way responsible.  So once a week they all got together to eat (“vegetables, Todd, a human can’t subsist on mashed potatoes alone”) and have a beer after the gauntlet of a Monday.  It was where both Todd and Hil had come out to everyone, where Ginny and Clark were locked into a closet together so they would get together already, where hookups and Potential Serious Things™ got to be brutally scrutinized for a minimum two hours.  It also required everyone to bring something, on a rotational basis after they all realized that Hil would never learn to cook if they didn’t make her bring something besides beer.  It had been cancelled for the week (Duncs was out of town for his mother’s engagement party), but next week was on.
“Y/N and I already have a stuffed cabbage planned, so tell him that,” Ginny said, pushing herself up.  “But right now, we have some grocery shopping to do.  Up you go bubs!”
She grabbed Y/N’s hand, pulling her onto her feet.  Y/N quirked a brow, resisting the urge to sigh.
“I’ll see you all later,” she said flatly, nudging a goodbye to Harry with the toe of her boot.  He tapped her ankle before Ginny had her off.
“We went grocery shopping yesterday,” Y/N sighed as soon as they were out of earshot.  “What’s actually going on?”
“When are you going to accept that you have feelings for Harry?”
Oh, but Y/N didn’t like this.  Ginny was serious, dead serious, in a way that her bubbling smile almost never gave way to.
“Ginny, I don’t,” Y/N groaned, rubbing at her temples.  Ginny grabbed her shoulders and pushed her into one of the archways.
“Y/N, I love you.  You’re one of my best friends, and we tell each other everything, which is why when I say this please know it’s because you’re important to me.  You like him, you’re in fucking denial about it, and it’s tearing you up.”
“Wh- I’m fine!  I am fine, and I’m not in denial about anything.”
“You fought this morning.  The two of you.”
This stopped Y/N, and she frowned slightly, tilting her head to stare at Ginny.
“How the fuck did you know that?”
“He’s always nicer to you and you’re always more careful talking to him.  Because you think it’s something you do to make him mad and you want to change it.  Because you like him.”
Y/N let her head drop. Sighed.  Rubbed her face.
“So what if I do Ginny?” she finally replied, voice noticeably weary to her own ears.  “It doesn’t-- it doesn’t matter, even a little bit.  He’s him and I’m me and we don’t get on and no amount of feeling whatever I feel or parsing out why is going to change it.”
This time it was Ginny’s turn to frown, and she reached forward to put her hands on Y/N’s shoulders, pull her closer with a soft little hum into a hug.
“Oh, peaches.  I know you hate to hear me say it-- and maybe that’s you protecting yourself, you are basically a pill bug-- but I don’t think he’s mean because he doesn’t like you.  I think you make him nervous honeybun, you know how strong you are.  It scares guys, especially ones like Harry, especially with what he was like when we met.”
Y/N rubbed her face into Ginny’s shoulder, mushing her lips together instead of replying.  The soft slide that her cherry chapstick produced was enough to ground her, let her whisper a soft “maybe.”
“What did you even fight about peaches?  It can’t have been much, usually it takes you two longer.”
Y/N had to breathe unhappily through her nose at the “usually”, no matter how fair it might be.  She took a moment before responding.
“I don’t really know Gin.  I was talking to the Professor, made a joke or somethin’, and as soon as Harry was in he was on my case.”
Ginny nodded, face thoughtful, then said, “Is this the classics prof, the one that half the campus wants on?”
Y/N had to roll her eyes at that.
“Yes, Professor Morrow is the one everyone else is drooling after.  What does that have to do with anything, you creep?”
“Harry was probably jealous, peaches.  You know he’s good at makin’ you laugh, bet he likes to be the only one.”

I think interesting your analysis abt Lana and her importance to Clark's journey. I know you're more of an Arrow/Laurel fan but do u think they could have done the same w Barry on The Flash? Do u think they could had introduced another comic book love interest of Barry even tho Iris always has been w him since the beginning in the comics? You have any thoughts abt this? Btw I'm a WA shipper and I would be bitter af if they had make me to wait 4 seasons to see Iris (like they did w Lois in SV) 😂
Well, first off, I think it’s important to note the differences. Smallville was a story about a young Clark Kent on his way to becoming Superman. It was never meant to be Superman: The Adventures Of! And it’s origin — in the comic books themselves — featured Lana Lang and Pete Ross, and Martha and Jonathan Kent, and growing up on a farm. So that was the show. With The Flash, he’s already Barry Allen, the fastest man alive.
The reason I’m annoyed at people hating on Lana, and playing the “ugh can Clark and Lois just get together already” game is because Smallville never promised that in the way that The Flash promised Barry/Iris. This was Clark’s origin story, and they promised the story of his first love (Lana), his first nemesis (Lex) and his journey to becoming a hero (Superman). Chloe Sullivan was actually created to fill the void of Lois in a Superman story, and it wasn’t until the fourth season that she showed up. And even then, it wasn’t really until the show went beyond where they initially thought it would go (five seasons) where they were able to start embracing Superman and his world, and invest in a Lois/Clark relationship, and invest in the Justice League, and invest in iconic Superman villains like Zod and Braniac and Doomsday, and Darkseid. So I think anyone who sits down to start Smallville, and hates Lana (and potentially a lot of things) because they just want to see Clark and Lois get together... they’re kind of missing the point.
I’m not mad at people watching Smallville from when Lois shows up and are like “oh my god I can’t wait to see them get together.” Not at all. I’m just saying that Smallville was different in that potentially Lois Lane could have never been involved (as the love story was Clark/Lana for like seven damn seasons haha) and it could have ended with him becoming Superman, stepping into the Daily Planet and meeting Lois, thus fulfilling that journey. Personally, I’m glad we got Lois. I loved her on the show. Clark/Lois banter was one of the greatest things about the show. But Clark and Lana never threatened it. Lana, as a character, never threatened it or threatened Lois. And people hate Lana because they prefer Clark/Lois and it’s just... it’s stupid logic to me. There’s his first love, and his “soulmate” (the woman he ends up with). Both were important. And both existed in the comics (unlike Oliver and Felicity on Arrow). Smallville promised the former (Clana), and was fortunate enough to run long enough to give fans the latter (Clois) as well.
As for The Flash, they did kind of explore other love interests. I mean, Barry had Linda, and Patty. Iris had like a blink-and-miss-it thing with her boss and a season long relationship with Eddie. So they did do the “wait it out game.” But Barry/Iris were the promised ship of the series. From the Pilot, we see that they’re married in the future. There’s a journey there to tune in and see play out, and Iris is very much the love interest. On Smallville, the promised “romance” was Clark and Lana, even though we knew it wouldn’t end with happily ever after. It was due to the show’s longevity, and certain cast departures, that opened the doors for them to give us Clark and Lois’ love story as well.  I feel like I’m rambling a bit now, I’m so sorry. But that’s what I meant when I talked about Lana, and how she’s so not Felicity, and how Clana does not equal Olicity, and how Smallville and Arrow are completely different in its exploration of romance for its main character/s.

ok ok ok. are you a spuffy fan? i feel like i've seen spuffy on yr blog and if that's not true then please ignore but i've been thinkin recently and i'm very interested in what you think/how you reconcile spike's attempted rape?? bc as a spuffy fan i love them together but i also can't ignore this part of their history in good conscience. was it ooc? was their relationship building to a horrible climax? i'm just very interested in what people think abt that writing decision
omg I’m sorry for taking so long to answer this, I wrote like half an essayand then firefox crashed and I got grumpy about it for a few days lol ;___;
anyway in short: do I ship it? yes. is my relationship with the shipcomplicated? fuck yes. can I reconcile the attempted rape? on a base level, no.on a character level, I am able to move past it but not look past it. on awriting level, I don’t reconcile it at all. was it ooc? yes and no,which is the interesting part
this got really long and I’m hoping that I can remember everything I wassaying before I had to start all over again (rip) but I’m sorry it got so longunder the cut
so I do still ship spuffy, but I have a really complicatedrelationship with it. I’ve shipped it since I was a tween, before I reallyunderstood the unhealthy parts of it (rape scene aside, which I was very clearon), and I’ve come to see those in a new light the past five or so years, butI’m still also someone who is very adamant about people being allowed to shipwhatever the fuck they want in fiction whether it’s unhealthy or not becauseit’s fiction, and at the end of the day I’m shipping something because I findit entertaining or interesting, not because it’s the paradigm of relationshipexamples. in fact most of the time it’s not, because I find most of thoserelationships boring on screen. so like, I do still ship it, but not the way Iused to?
anyway, was it ooc? in terms of mythology canon I don’tthink it was ooc at all. spike had no soul, he was at a base level evil. I don’t think this excuses theattempted rape at all, nothing excuses it or forgives it, but it does explain abit how the spike who dressed buffy’s hand wounds at the start of the seasonwas the same spike who flipped a switch and attempted to rape her near the endof the season. spike never became “good” when he had no soul, he was like aferal animal on a leash. he learnt to play relatively nice with others andbecame fond of some of his owners, but he still wasn’t cured and if you tookthe leash off at the end of the day he would have bitten them. yes, spike lovedbuffy in his own soulless way, but he still had a literal, animalistic demoninside him (we even see in angel in over the rainbow etc. what the actual demoninside vampires is like at its base level) and no soul to control it—only theintellectual knowledge that some actions would get him in buffy’s good booksand some would get him in buffy’s bad books and so he kept it under controlbecause he wanted her and he also wanted to not be killed by the scooby gang.again: this does not excuse the attempted rape at all. nothing forgives it. butlike, it does explain why buffy and many viewers are able to move past it. Idon’t think that on a mythology canon level it was ooc at all, I think thatpeople just forget that spike was stillevil when he was being nice to buffy or dawn or joyce. I think that’s partof the reason it’s so hard to piece together whether spuffy really could workor be good as a ship, because the show never separates spike with a soul fromspike without a soul the way they did with angel. with angel it’s so clearlytwo different people, but with spike it’s a muddy mess of the same thing and ifyou don’t write spike with a soul differently to how you wrote him withoutone—how are viewers supposed to forgive him for what he did?
was it ooc on a character level though? that’s a wholedifferent thing because that opens the can of worms of spike being ooc ingeneral. the spike we see in season four onwards is drastically different fromthe spike we see in season two, and I do think part of that is just plain oldcharacter development but I also think that part of that is due to them wantinga slightly different character when he became a regular? spike was almost woobified by his own writing team? I don’t thinkit’s anything like the character assassination of britta for example, and Iwouldn’t even call it character assassination, but I do think that at somepoint late during season three or early season four they decided they wanted aspike who was funnier, a bit more sympathetic, and a bit more worthy of being afan fave. it's less like character assassination and more like characteradaptation? I feel like they saw that james had this excellent comedicpotential and wanted to use that, and I’ve seen that with other characters onshows too. I think they had to bend spike a bit along the way to get the spikethey wanted and who they could have fun with. he went from spike the genuinelychilling villain, to spike the comedic relief, to spike the stalker, to spikethe coping mechanism, to spike the love interest…and it definitely wasn’t astraight line of development. they definitelyhad to bend the character along the way and lose some of what was thereoriginally and add some of what wasn’t there. and like, it’s not necessarily abad thing, like I fuckin love comic relief spike and I can totally understandwhy they might’ve been like “fuck this james guy is good we want more of that”,but I do think that on a character level they ended up with something that wasquite frequently messy. if you’ve taken this villain and woobified himyourself, then even if he is still evilit’s not surprising that people are surprised or find it ooc for him to attemptto rape buffy because they made him a puppy with a temper instead of a wolfwith a playful streak, and then suddenly his fangs come out again. andobviously to a degree that was the point of it, to remind viewers that he wasevil and he wasn’t good and buffy forgot that, the scoobies forgot that, everyoneforgot that, but at the same time if you woobify a character that much doesthat point land? or does it just become ooc? I think a spike in love with buffyand protecting dawn and getting flowers after joyce died could be consideredjust as ooc as a spike who attempted to rape buffy. he became a bit of a messycharacter if you really think about it for too long, and they never separatedhis soulless state from his soul-having state enough to keep track of it
so anyway, on a character level I’m able to move past itbecause I think at the end of the day…spike didn’t have a soul when it happenedand he was written kind of weirdly over the course of the show but I still likehim. I move past it as a viewer because I wantto move past it, and because I find the spuffy relationship interesting (yet Istill want more/better for buffy always? man, I said it was complicated hahah)
 NOW, FROM A WRITING STANDPOINT
 bullshit bullshit utter fucking bullshit.
why though? well apart from the reasons I’ve already mentionedabout kind of messy character writing and it being impossible to tell whichparts of spike are ooc or not…………the attempted rape scene was not about buffy, before during or after it happened
they wrote it as a gateway to spike’s redemption arc. theytraumatised their main character, this beautiful female character and one of mytop favourite characters of all time, to boost a man’s redemption arc, andthat’s just fucking awful and we’ve seen it too many times and buffy doesn’t deserver that bullshit.
now I don’t know whether there’s a solid answer on whetheror not spike went to that demon at the end of season six to get his soul or toget his chip removed, but it also like…doesn’t matter, lol? I personally alwaysread that scene as he went to get his chip removed so he could kill her, andthen the demon was like lol psych herehave a soul! which I think also makes it easier for me to move past theattempted rape, because then it didn’t literally lead to him choosing to go have a redemption arc andbecome a better man for her, but like a lot of people do read it the secondway. and either way!! it’s a crock of shit!!
not only did they put in this scene so they could kickstartspike’s redemption, instead of picking some other non-rape or non-violence againstbuffy related plot point to lead to him getting a soul, but then they sort ofmade it all about spike in season seven too?
they do address bits and pieces of buffy’s trauma afterwardsand how it impacted her, but way way too much of the focus was placed onspike’s guilt and spike’s wanting to fix it and how it impacted spike etc., sonot only did they have buffy almost raped to kickstart a man’s storyline, butthey barely focused on her trauma over the “trauma” of spike and that’sjust…fucking awful. like it makes me so mad and it makes me feel so gross.
as a writing decision I think it’s sexist, disgusting, lazyand unforgivable and the biggest fault with what is literally my favourite tvshow of all time lol (you wouldn’t think it is from this rant?? but it is?? andI like spike and ship spuffy??? god this is a mess) and I think it was probablythe worst fucking writing decision on all of buffy (and this is the show thatkilled tara, a literal lesbian angel)
and honestly……the fact that I am aware of and think it’s theworst writing decision possible almost makes it easier to move past from acharacter standpoint? because it was a bad writing decision, it takes some ofthe weight off of spike’s actions for me and I’m aware that it was stupid and grossand it would’ve been better if spike tripped and accidentally fell into a gravethat had a stray soul in it that he inhaled.
I don’t know if that makes sense, in fact I don’t know ifany of this makes sense…but it’s like: spuffy is interesting. to me they havechemistry, they have narrative and trope appeal (even though it wasn’tfulfilled, or wasn’t fulfilled right), they are two characters I likeindividually, and so…I continue to ship it and enjoy it despite the horriblefucking bad writing decisions that went down in season six. I know that evenwithout the attempted rape season or even without season six it’s still anunhealthy ship and it’s problematic (and I want better for buffy at the end ofthe day), but it is at a base level to me entertaining, and that’s what I likefrom my ships
god this is almost two thousand words I’m so sorry I have alot of thoughts and I had to rewrite half of this so it’s really, really scattered and confusing butlike…yes I ship it, no I don’t think the attempted rape was a good writingdecision, no I don’t excuse or forgive it but I do move past it
and in answer to what other people feel about the scene andship….it’s really divided lol, a lot of people feel like I do, a lot of peopleprefer bangel, a lot of people prefer spuffy, a lot of people can’t look pastthe rape at all, a lot of people look past the rape too easily, and a lot of people probably don’t know what to thinkor have no strong opinions lol
 god
this is two thousand words I’m sorry
