Steve White will be joining us for TFNation 2023, ready to tell all about gritty post-apocalyptic futures and lush dino-utopias. Stay tuned for more details on the TFNation website -- where All Are One!
❓ Do you like vampire stories? What vampire book is your favorite? The Lights of Prague by Nicole Jarvis is a unique and interesting book. It blends an atmospheric historical setting with a vampire story and it works together really well. I liked the writing style – it made vivid pictures of Prague – mysterious, old, beautiful, and dangerous. It was a pleasure for me to re-visit this city throughout the book, to walk narrow streets and beautiful bridges, to look at palaces and churches, to take a break in the city parks. The plot was interesting too. It had elements of a detective story, dynamic action scenes, and a romance. This book follows two main characters – Domek and Ora – who are investigating rumors about some mysterious vampire cure from different angles. They are very different in backgrounds and experiences but have a common cause, and it's all that matters on the dark streets of Prague. From the things that could be executed better, I can highlight the character work. Most of the characters(and especially villains) were rather generic and had rather typical motivations, and I didn't feel like there was some big character development throughout the book. It doesn't spoil the book for me – I was engaged and the story was a fun ride. I'm really curious about the next book from Nicole Jarvis - A Portrait In Shadow and can't wait to read it this year. Big thanks to my twinnie @jonesandthebooks for the recommendation! 🤍🖤 And I'm grateful to Edelweiss and Titan Books for providing me with this digital reading copy in exchange for my honest review. #thelightsofprague #nicolejarvis #edelweissplus #titanbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp2fiTXIt2g/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Took a bit of a sidestep from my hard boiled PI novel reading to read the latest collection of Ms Tree comics. I think this series is what led to my reading mysteries at all. This is the first time these stories have ever been collected and probably the first time I’ve read them since the 80s. They absolutely hold up and I hope these reprints go on long enough to collect the whole series. #thismakesmehappy #books #2023reading #bookstagram #comics #graphicnovel #mysterycomics #crimecomics #mstree #maxallancollins #terrybeatty #hardcasecrime #titanbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CpVd51gP9Vx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#circleofbookishfriends Day 3 Long Title-- Absolutely no one reading indie horror today should be surprised that @hystericteeth wins the prize for longest book title at 11 words. In addition to his gut-churning prose, one of the most anticipated parts of knowing Eric has a new book coming out is seeing what title he comes up with next. And his book covers are always on point. 🤌🤌 #EricLaRocca #ThingsHaveGottenWorseSinceWeLastSpokeAndOther #TitanBooks #lgbtqiabooks #lgbtqiarepresentation https://www.instagram.com/p/CiGcO34rW_m/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I'm so thrilled and overjoyed to share the UK cover of Promises Stronger Than Darkness, which comes out April 11 from @titanbooks. It's the final battle to save all the worlds! I think this one is sillier and scarier and more full of feels than the first two put together. https://www.instagram.com/p/CjYerxtPZ6f/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The new Nathan Heller novel by Max Allan Collins, the first one published by @hard_case_crime, is great! Each book in the series puts Chicago private eye in the middle of a historical mystery; this one is set in 1955 and 1958 and features the Bobby Greenlease kidnapping, a horrible crime I had never heard of before this book. While the series has been running for decades, this book is a great jumping on point, and I’m looking forward to the next one, coming later this year from HHC. The first book in the series, True Detective, may have been my introduction to private eye/crime/noir fiction, after learning about Collins from his comic with @terrybeattyart, Ms Tree (also currently being reprinted by HHC). Even if I’d read Hammett’s Maltese Falcon before Collins, this series would be the one that made me a passionate fan of the genre, and thus in part shaped who I am today. I’d love to see the entire series reissued with gorgeous covers like this—and yes, I’d buy the whole series again for the covers—but regardless, I hope the Heller series has found a long-term home here. #thismakesmehappy #books #2023reading #bookstagram #mystery #detectivefiction #nathanheller #maxallancollins #bigbundle #hardcasecrime #titanbooks #truecrimefiction #greenleasekidnapping https://www.instagram.com/p/CoP6vpfJIK3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Leven has no memory of her life before she was a soldier. The process of turning her into a Herald – a magical killing machine – was traumatic enough that it wiped her mind clean. Now, with the war won and the Imperium satisfied, she finds herself unemployed and facing a bleak future. Her fellow Heralds are disappearing, and her own mind seems to be coming apart at the seams. Strange visions,…
