If it's hard to read the text, let me know & I will type out what it says right here.

I don’t know if you talked about it but what’s your opinion on Raph both iterations
Ayo o/
by both iterations, im assuming you meant ROTTMNT Raph and 2k3 Raph? Because i have many thoughts on all Raphie boys, but those seem the most obvious in this context/most different.
lucky for you, im coming off the heels of my essay which was the history of media (comics mostly) and how economical, political, and expectations of each era drove narratives and characterizations. TMNT you can see it pretty obviously by looking at its history - Batman, too, is another good series with a long running and multiple changes.
basically, i love all Raphs. i think all of them are wholly a product of their time, and i love them even more for that. with 03 Raph and the early 2000s in general, we still see the angry, gruff "bad boy" rebellion characterization that came from the 90s still being utilized. the difference now though is audiences were getting bored with an unchanging character, so a lot of these bad boys got redemption arcs.
in the 03 series, we see it a lot with Raph and Leo more so than the B team kids, but Raph's is always handled very... I would say, almost subtly? compared to Leo's character arc. Usually Raph's anger issues push a plot forward, introduce new characters, or force Raph to change (in good or bad ways).
even tho the core of Raph never changes, his attitude in the show grows and matures with the series. i love those types of characters, probably because the early 2000s is when i was really getting into media as a whole.
ROTTMNT Raph is completely different in a lot of ways. he's introduced as having anger issues in the past, but has gotten past them (mostly). i think as far as archetypes go, he's still played as that guy with the grumpy pants on, but altered in that maybe he was forced to grow up more quickly than 2k3 Raph was. that responsibility tempered his anger early on. which makes sense narratively for the ROTTMNT as a series, but also makes sense as a character because of the time it was made for.
real late 2010s media recognizes that the angry, rebellious character has been played to death. a lot of them are done very well (Zuko comes to mind instantly), and others not so much... (i would argue Loki, but that's a whole other can of worms). and i believe as a society, people are tired of that one angry person that disrupts a cohesive team - there's nothing new or interesting about that. but a character who has had to change his entire life to take care of his baby brothers because their dad has severe PTSD? uh, yeah, of course we want to see that. in the early 2000s we didn't even know what ptsd was when not attributed to combat.
So in-charge, post angry raph is still hugely popular and a hit because it feels more real to us who are living in the time he was made for. if he was introduced in 2003? he'd be boring and flat. same with 2k3 Raph in ROTTMNT. he'd be boneheaded and dumb.
anyway
long story short, i love my raphie boys but i am so glad the angry rebellion boys are finally taking a backseat. gimme nuanced characterizations, writers!

Ok, but I love how mikey mutures in mirage, because they don't depend on mikey being strange and weird as a mode of rebellion or showing how one of a kind he is and actually allows him to take on a more proactive role in disrupting the systems and processes he just aren't down for. Yes, he changes and found most of the things him and raph used to do childish, but it's behind him actually standing on business and that allowing the space to grow independently.
I don't know it feels like that era in the 2010's writing trends that aged like milk that haunts tmnt 2012's storyline and dates in, especially with how mikey is written.

For the week of 20 November 2017
Quick Bits:
Angelic #3 continues Qora and the Complainer’s quest to find the Eye of Ay. Just take a moment and look at how beautiful Caspar Wijngaard’s art is.

Animosity: Evolution #2 introduces a family of rodents to the community, who learn quickly that not everything may be as it seems and not everyone is looking out for their best interests. It’s a nice...ground-level way to introduce some of the inner workings of the refuge.
| Published by AfterShock
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Betty & Veronica: Vixens #1 is a fun start to this new series where Betty and Veronica start a women’s biker gang. The art from Kim & Kim’s Eva Cabrera gives it that nice edge while still maintaining a style not too far removed from the old Dan Parent house style.
| Published by Archie Comics
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
DuckTales #3 gives us two more adventures of Scrooge McDuck, Della, and Donald penned by Joey Cavalieri. I can’t stress how much fun these stories have been so far, perfectly capturing the humour and adventure of the new television series. Great for both kids and adults.
| Published by IDW

Giant Days 2017 Holiday Special #1 sees the girls take a trip to London over Christmas break, staying with one of Esther’s high school friends who has a “real adult life”. It’s fun as they try to meddle with her love life, setting her up with whom they deem socially responsible among her three suitors. The artwork from Jenn St-Onge is very nice.

God Complex: Dogma #2 sets Seneca into looking directly for the One God at the behest of Apollo and the Rulers. How religion is being presented here as a mix of faith, knowledge, and science is interesting, I don’t know how much of this is inherent in the toys, but Paul Jenkins is weaving the story very well here. And again, the artwork from Hendry Prasetya and Jessica Kholinne is wonderful.

Made Men #3 continues Jutte’s tale of getting revenge for the assassination of herself and her squad, focusing this time on the police chief. I love the set up on keeping the chief otherwise occupied while the rest of the team is dumping his home for information.

Motor Girl #10 is about what you’d expect for a conclusion to a series about a war vet who has an imaginary talking gorilla as a friend and is on the cusp of witnessing an alien invasion. Terry Moore has told an interesting and entertaining story here and I’m kind of sad to see it end.
| Published by Abstract Studio

Optimus Prime #13 takes us back into the land of deeply interwoven Transformers continuity, pulling together threads from the Dinobots conflict with Bludgeon, Sixshot’s rampage across the galaxy, the ramifications of Jhiaxus’ experiments, and the recent First Strike events.

Punisher: Platoon #3 gives Goran Parlov an opportunity to show you how powerful a stare can be.

Redneck #7 kicks off a new arc with the family laying low following the destruction at Sulphur Springs. As they hide out, Landry gets an education on the “vampire rules” from Bartlett. It’s again interesting how seemingly effortlessly Donny Cates can weave together down home Texan family life and vampire mythos. It makes being a vampire seem almost quaint.

The Shadow #4 reveals what Luisa has been up to, as the Shadow himself comes to grips with his actions having become the inspiration for others. It’s an interesting way to deal with legacy and the impact that his vigilantism has had on society.

Sherlock Frankenstein and the Legion of Evil #2 again spotlights why David Rubín should be a household name. His designs and art are just incredible. This issue focuses on Cthu-Lou, a small time crook with an octopus head that just wanted to be an ordinary plumber.
| Published by Dark Horse

Star Wars #39 continues to fold Rogue One into the broader Rebellion-era, while also showing to Luke the coal face of war and its cost in a way that a scruffy moisture farmer from Tatooine wouldn’t have understood before.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe #16 begins a new Ticeraton story as the main feature, giving readers a bit of backstory on their history in Dimension X under the heel of the Utroms. There’s also a cute back up of the “Triceratots” training from Erika Anderson and Michael Dialynas. It’s really nice to see Dialynas back doing some Turtles work.
| Published by IDW
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Underwinter: A Field of Feathers #2 is a little more straightforward than the first issue, giving a more concrete explanation as to what’s going on, even as we’re still treated to impressionist art and somewhat abstract poetry. This is some really great stuff.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Void Trip #1 is basically the Zaks and Edsel bits from Heavy Metal’s “So Beautiful and So Dangerous” mixed with Cheech & Chong. It’s rather humorous as Ana attempts to justify her hippie lifestyle as she and Gabe search for Euphoria. The artwork from Plaid Klaus is amazing.

X-O Manowar #9 shows Aric that liberating a planet and achieving victory isn’t as easy as just one battle and the death of an emperor. Clayton Crain’s art again is more than worth the price of admission alone.

Theatricality and Artificality (10/10/2019)
And now we come to one of my favourite lectures, the weird and the wonderful of post-High Renaissance art; Mannerism and the Baroque. They are both extra, highly stylised, deeply coloured, and both a response to the movement before it - groups of artists searching for a way to become more than their predecessors, to move out of their shadow.
For the Mannerists it meant moving beyond the heights achieved by their forebears, Raphael, Michelangelo, Leonardo (all the TMNT) and needed to find their own style, their own stamp. Mannerism is characterised by elongation of limbs and distortion of perspectiv, combined with compositional instability. As you can see in Jacopo Pontormo’s ‘Deposition From the Cross’ the two figures supposedly holding the weight of Christ hover delicately on their tiptoes as though completely weightless. Far too many hands meet in the centre of the painting than should be possible, lending further incredulity to the unstable poses of the figures involved.
Tumblr media
Pontormo, J. (1528) The Deposition From the Cross. Florence: Church of Santa Felicita
Baroque was itself a rebellion against Mannerism, it is highly ornate, overly decorated, incredibly complex compositionally. The word baroque may have been adapted from the Portuguese term barroco meaning ‘a flawed pearl’, the artists of the baroque used intense colour and deep chiaroscuro (shadow and light), avoiding the tranquil scenes of the Renaissance choosing instead the moments of greatest drama and intensity. As well as exploring experimental compositions as you can see in ‘Las Meninas’ by Diego Velazquez where you can see the viewer of the painting becomes the subject of Velazquez, who we can see in the mirror is the King and Queen.
Tumblr media
Velazquez, D. (1656) Las Meninas. Madrid: Museo Nacional del Prado
Sculpture in the Baroque era really came into its own, with sculptors, like Giambologna and Bernini, the emotion and startling realism they manage to find within the marble. My personal favourite is ‘Apollo and Daphne’ by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, it was designed for the Borghese Gallery where it was placed in the room just so as you walk in to the room and then move around the sculpture the story of Apollo and Daphne unfolds cinematically before you. The incredible detail in the figures as Daphne metamorphoses in front of our eyes, and Apollo reaches towards her.

This is Alexandra and she is an OC for TMNT: Era of Rebellion. She has stars scribbled on the cuffs of her shorts because I had that one line from "If I Could Tell Her" stuck in my head while I was drawing & she has a smiley face patch similar to 2012 April O'Neil’s. I wanted orange in her design to be symbolic of the turtle she is closest too as well, hence the orange sash and shoes.
And no, I didn’t forget them, she just doesn’t have arms.

I also forgot to mention in the sheet that Cassie also stands in as a shout out to 2012 Casey Jones mentioning that he has a sister. She was never actually shown, but I wanted to make her a character.
Anyway I am calling the AU “TMNT: Era of Rebellion” for now. But I am not going to get into the details of the story. Just a few details on the characters themselves.
I also just wanted to show off this Casey because I realized that I made him one very handsome lad.

One more post for TMNT: Era of Rebellion. This one features my current design for Michelangelo, an eastern painted turtle (though he should have 3 toes). I also just really like this background.
