Since you mentioned it in a recent post, what do you think about TOH having a sympathetic main cast of mostly conventionally beautiful, humanoid characters while still preaching about how 'weirdos have to stick together'? Do you think there's some hypocrisy in how the show handles its less 'cute' characters?

I do think it's hypocritical and that in and of itself is a problem. It's also just really fucking boring and contributes to the problem of it feeding into the fantasy problem of "Our world but with more teeth."

So since I'm going to rip into this creative choice for the rest of this blog, let's first talk about the positives of having a cast that is effectively all humans, especially all good looking ones, instead of demons, monsters, etc. After all, we need to be fair. There's a lot that goes behind these choices and while the Isles has a lot of bizarre designs in the backgrounds, there had to be a point to all of the denizens we commonly interact with looking like generic elves. *flips through notes* *checks some papers* *flips through more notes* It makes fanart easy.

...OKAY FINE! That's only SOMEWHAT hyperbolic. The reason it makes fanart easier is also why it's really easy to just go with a cast of humans. We as a SPECIES inherently trust and connect better with those who look like ourselves, for better and mostly worse. This can be as specific as skin color and as abstract as simply the human form. Yes, for people like me who are proud monster fuckers, this line blurs but for common Joe Shmoe, they're going to want someone who looks fairly normal if they're going to get really invested.

Worse yet is if you look at modern cartoons. Bare minimum, Molly McGee and Amphibia. Yes, SOME people in those fandoms will draw the frogs and Scratch... But they ALL draw the trios of human characters. And yes, shipping matters here but I've also seen a good number of Amphibia artists just admit to spending way too much figuring out how to draw Sprig because the anatomy is wonky enough to make you question yourself. If they're all humans, you can still get by just fine with your normal style and lessons that most art books are going to teach you.

This isn't even untrue from a writing perspective. Just a cultural shift (and yes I'm calling myself out on this) can be enough to throw you WAY out of your comfort zone for how to write a character besides token elements like food. Throw in entirely different anatomy, skill sets inherent to biology, weaknesses similarly inherent to that biology, and you start to have a lot more questions you need to ask for a very basic level understanding of a character. Which seems like a good transition point to talking about the monstrous denizens of TOH. Specifically that there is ONE 'monster' in The Owl House main cast and that is King.

Can you tell me what the fuck is special about King? Besides being short and fluffy, his differing anatomy effectively NEVER comes into play. His magical blasts are practically replicated by Raine whistling. Make him an 8 year old elf child and the only thing you lose is his ancestry. Not his heritage, his ANCESTRY. That's pretty fucking weak.

Edit: Someone on Twitter pointed out to me that King's design is effectively just a furred Cubone and I hate knowing this.

Otherwise, the only inhumane thing about him is that they make him a dog. Which, you know... isn't exactly going very far down on the spectrum of likability for most people. In fact, this technique isn't anywhere near new. Toothless is just a giant cat and I love him for it but I wouldn't blame anyone who looked at the How to Train Your Dragon Dragons and went "I wish they acted like dragons." Because... They don't? They have the designs and move sets of dragons but most of their temperament is far more cat like, down to having dragon nip and being distracted by reflected light.

King is also the only foreground deviation for the protagonists. As I said when I first mentioned this, you can't even really go with Willow being heavier set. She is pretty much the textbook definition of "More to love" seeing as her being slightly heavier just gives her a softer design than the rest of the characters instead of being anywhere close to unappealing like one of Mabel's friends in Gravity Falls is. You're supposed to look at Willow and go "I bet she gives really good hugs" and that's about it. Her weight, much like her ethnicity frankly, is hardly what you're supposed to think about with her design besides basic contrast.

And she's still better than the rest of the cast who are models. Including Luz for that matter. Now the show's style doesn't lend itself well to distinguishing how pretty a character is besides their reactions from a different character... But it can also absolutely do ugly. And no one in this main cast is ugly. You want a NASTY scar, you're gonna have to look elsewhere than the tatted up teenage boy and the girl who has a little flair on one of her eyebrows. One is meant to look cool, the other is still the same job while also being slight enough not to embellish the main face too much.

Amity and Eda though are explicitly in text stated as REALLY PRETTY. Like model pretty from how people react to them. Yes, one of these people is Luz's girlfriend but literally any acknowledgement of her looks is more than Gus, Willow or any of the villains (especially positively) are given. Not even Odalia who is the best case against this argument. But, you know, those are Amity's genes running through Odalia. She's not gonna be ugly because then how are all of the Blight Children ready for a Vogue cover shoot?

And here's the thing: In most media, this isn't really a problem. People like attractive people and there's nothing wrong with that. I know people want more representation and they are right to want that but also most media is a fantasy of some sort. Especially for a basic wish fulfillment isekai like TOH, a really pretty harem is packaged explicitly into the fantasy because who doesn't want hot magical beings saying they're the best?

Except then there's the line of "Us Weirdos Gotta Stick Together," or the fact that Luz is stated to be bullied (but didn't actually look out of place amongst the cheerleaders or drama kids), or the fact that TOH theoretically peddled early on a Fantasy vs. Reality theme. It is a show that is meant to CELEBRATE the Other and be challenging to those who are commonly seen as better... But the Other isn't present. When they are... They're villains. Belos is the only character with a curse that doesn't make them pretty. It's really gruesome what the curse does to him, even before he becomes a full monster. Contrast that with Eda who sprouts feathers and that's really it? Then you have Tibbles, who is a literal pig, the evil publisher who is a lizard, the monster hunters who are orcs effectively, Warden Wrath who is a homunculus? There isn't actually a clear inspiration directly for him besides 'monster' which is part of why he's one of the best one off villains of the series. The closest to a protagonist monster is Hooty which the series goes out of its way to make most people mock, outright hate and/or be actively repulsed by him, especially if it's a character we're supposed to care about.

When it comes to the villains, there are two who stand out as prettier than the rest and they both have direct connections to the main cast. In fact, to Amity. Odalia who I talked about earlier and Boscha. I guess Matt if you want to count him but as far as looking like a basic ass bitch goes, you don't get much more basic than Matt without bleaching his skin. Boscha on the other hand's prettiness is pretty much the best argument we had before she was given a half assed redemption that she was going to be redeemed. Why else make her so much prettier than everyone else? Unless it was just fueled by "She is going to be next to Amity a few times and a Blight wouldn't interact with anyone too... alternative." None of Amity's friends are more monstrous than a third eye after all and that doesn't really hold Boscha back all that much. Frankly, it probably saved her from large forehead jokes akin to what Amity gets since they both have hairstyles that pull their hair back and that's a problem for the show's style.

What does all of this mean? Well, it means in a show that is trying to lift up those who feel like they don't belong, it's still reinforcing standard beauty ideals of society. Worse yet, it just kind of discredits that Luz meets ANY outcast. I wouldn't have called my friends in High School ugly of course but were any of us ready for the runway? Of course not. We didn't take care of ourselves right for that or just didn't have the right genes for it.

Because let's face it: The eyeball head girl was NEVER going to be a main character. And that's... also really boring. The fact that witches are just elves but without any of the culture, long lifespans (as far as we know) etc. like that is also just really boring. And for a fantasy show, especially one that pitches in the first episode that ANY folk tale we have originated here, that's not good. Especially since even if they look like elves, you could have still at least TRIED to make them interesting with things like the bile sac but that's a throwaway joke to the writers. And the saddest thing is... If you're a person who LIKES weird characters, or actually embraces their weirdness and so doesn't need to be told they'll have a Victoria Secrets model as a wife... What is TOH gonna do for you? Or for anyone who doesn't want designs that are less interesting and less unique than even Danny Phantom's. And that's from fucking Butch Hartman who is not exactly known for being a top tier artist. Like SAM as a goth is more alternative (especially for when the show first aired) than fucking ANYONE in the main cast of TOH. And that show debuted ALMOST TWENTY YEARS AGO. And Valerie even had a similar bodytype to Willow but with WAY more personality!

Now I'm just thinking about all the shows I grew up with like Total Drama Island that had so much fun with even their pretty boy designs. That's frankly my biggest issue. The pretty problem in TOH IS bad thematically. Above all else though... it's just boring. Boring and lazy. How these characters look don't mean ANYTHING to them. It doesn't say much about them, the show or anything else.

They're pretty just because the creator probably likes making pretty people and I can usually support. I support Yoko Taro after all. But Yoko Taro makes people (or androids which are based off humans). This is fantasy. You can do whatever you want and the TOH crew couldn't be assed enough to even do a demon.

In a world called the DEMON REALM! I think at that point, you need to ask why the fuck they're bothering with it being a fantasy show in the first place, let alone one trying to pitch itself as anything other than basic wish fulfillment.

rewatching TOH pt2: I’ve seen some arguments about how the final season bent back over to coddle Luz and how it felt like she had everything to gain and nothing to lose, and the counterarguments that “not every end needs to be doom and gloom to be good.” I mean, I get where the latter is coming from; there’s too much media out there obsessed with angst because oooh realism but I still find myself siding with the first opinion, because the show makes a point of calling out the Chosen One trope, and there was a significant amount of screentime dedicated to Luz stressing about having to choose between Earth (real world) and Boiling Isles (fantasy land) only for her to get both anyway, and become the chosen one. It feels like the Luz we started the show with is the same Luz with whom we ended the show. And like, having to lose/sacrifice something doesn’t necessarily make the ending sad yk? Maybe bittersweet but not necessarily bad.

What really cemented this for me was s1ep11/Sense and Insensitivity, where Luz mentions that she was aware that becoming a witch on Earth was impossible, so her runner up dream was to become a writer and I wish that was how the series ended---Luz choosing to stay with her mom before the gateway between both worlds is destroyed, thus choosing the real world with all its dread and dullness, but realizes that doesn’t mean she has to become dull too. Instead she channels her creativity and love for magic through writing and shares the stories of the heroes of the Boiling Isles. In a way she does get both real life and fantasy but it feels like she actually grew up. And she herself says in s2ep13/Any Sport in a Storm (after finding out Azura’s writer was human after all): “Some times it’s nice to be reminded that you don’t need to be a powerful ancient witch to make something special.” 

I’m gonna get a bit fanfic-y here but I like to imagine her on her first book signing/reading/whatever in the epilogue. In the first page she dedicates the book to her father, with whom she found her love for magic and books, to her mother, the kindest and most patient mom anyone could ask for, and finally to the Owl Lady and her magical friends who helped find her real ambition and grow into the person she has become today. A bright-eyed child asks if the Owl Lady, Amity, and King are really real, which Luz answers vaguely, with a distant but affectionate gaze.

Move on to the Boiling Isles and everything they need to show us about how it changed including the reformed schools of magic, and end with Amity walking by the beach where she discovers what resembles the human trash Eda used to collect (and maybe Tibbles picking through it to find his next scam). Among these is a book, its cover art a dramatic witch duel between somewhat familiar face, and it reminds her of all these years ago when she first found the Azura series. Unlike that series, however, this book is signed by a name she knows very well. 

Boom happy where everyone finds their place in life and is doing what they love and even though it’s sad that they separated you still have an open ending that gives hope for the gang finding each other again.

Idk I just think it’s a shame ep11 is the only episode where we see Luz’s passion towards writing fantasy (rather than just reading or dreaming about it), besides maybe teasing starting a writing club with Amity in s2e13. If not to foreshadow where her future was headed, the whole episode was kinda pointless since the episode right before this one where King manipulates a half-transformed Eda could’ve already served the purpose of bringing to light King’s tendency to step over others for his Demon King fantasies (but he gets away with it scot-free because Eda conveniently turns a blind eye every time Luz or King do her dirty lmao) so why do we need 2 of those in a row? Tbh there’s too many King-focused eps towards the second half of the show when I’d rather there was more time dedicated to seeing Luz actually learning magic. Why’s there 3 episodes between the episode where she gets signed up for school and the one where she actually has her first day? So much for a magical girl show.

Hi!! Thank you sm for the ask!! I'm gonna switch the numbers up a bit because I've answered a few you've listed but still wanna answer more.

1.) What episode got you invested in the show? Why?

I already answered this one here so I'll exchange this with 3.

3.) Favorite episode? Why? Ramble as much as you'd like.

My favorite episode most definitely for nostaligic and sentimental reasons would be Enchanting Grom Fright, and I KNOW like there are a TON of other episodes but I cannot deny the fact that EGF really does hold a special place in my heart for being (as I answered in question 1.) the reason I even got into TOH in the first place back in 2020. The entire course of this hyperfixation is BECAUSE of that episode. I love it sm because it literally was the spark of the fandom's outrage over shipping Lumity. Everyone was racing to draw and commit every art medium to fandom space. Ao3 was such a different place back then too for TOH fanfic. I think after EGF came out a lot of things really came to be TOH. Of course then we had WIng It Like Witches (which that's an entire discussion in itself!!) that made us all freak out even more about Lumity. I don't know haha. EGF really holds a special place in my heart that I love more than s2. WHICH- Don't even get me wrong. I absolutely love LOVE LOVE s2. We got the Lumity kiss and all that fun cannon stuff- It's just that nothing to me compares to the absolute sheer ferality I had over them because of that episode. TOH really had a chokehold on me because of that.

7.) Has the show ever made you cry? What scene(s)?

6.) A character you didn't expect to love? What made you start liking them?

Honestly, I'm gonna give a hot take here but Willow. In the beginning back during s1 I didn't feel like she was all that cool. (I didn't HATE her- I just didn't see the appeal of her) Of course Understanding Willow definitely had an impact but it wasn't until s2 when we really got to see into her more that I started to really think she wasn't half bad. Like s1 was mostly not as plot driven so it kinda felt that she was mid. Was indifferent but I'm so glad the show changed my mind about her because she truly was one of the best characters.

9.) If the show had a full three seasons, whats something you genuinely think would happen? Not a wishful thinking, what do you think is something that would've happened?

Well Beach Episode got hinted at so obviously I would be down for that, but I think most importantly seeing more interactions between the hexsquad. I would've wanted to see a picnic lumity cemetery date obviously, and maybe even the hexsquad going to a convention together. I just would want more shenanigans with them all.

Also more Raeda?? Like I would be down for that. And Steve!! And Lilith!! Lilith and Hooty moments.

I think we would've gotten more clarification on the whole curse and the inner lore of it, because I know KNOW theres more to it there. More lore with Hooty and what even that worm was too. I just know there would've been more lore if we had more time.

I know Belos/Phillip technically killed his brother Caleb Wittebane. That much is already public knowledge in the TOH fandom as of the events of “Hollow Mind”.

However, based on what was revealed in the TOH S2 finale, I'm starting to believe that Philip did NOT intend to kill his brother.

My theory is that as Caleb became more acclimatized to living on the Boiling Isles, this further drove a wedge between the brothers. 

Like let's say, at some point, both Wittebane Brothers wanted nothing more than to return home and leave the witching world forever after getting trapped there. However later down the line, Caleb changed his mind---started to like living on the Boiling Isles to the point that maybe he no longer wished to leave and actually approached Philip on the prospect of the two brothers never returning to the human world period and instead start a new, better life on the Boiling Isles. A prospect which Philip was strongly against since it went against everything he and his brother's family stood for given their witch-hunter upbringing. Being the younger brother, I'd like to think that Philip was far more stubborn and impressionistic than his older brother who seemed to be more open-minded and understanding than he was. I'd like to think that Caleb became more welcoming to the Boiling Isles as a result of him meeting a lovely witch who showed him the wonder and beauty of the Isles and magic itself.

Who knows? Perhaps... Caleb even fell in love with this witch and had planned to build a life with her on the Isles. A life he had hoped that his brother would remain a part of.

However I think Philip became very, very jealous of this newfound relationship between his brother and the witch; soon concluding that she was stealing Caleb away from him. Hear me out on this one folks:

I don't wish to assume that Philip ever hated his brother.

On the contrary, I'd like to think that, in his own way, Philip Wittebane deeply loved his brother---but in a rather possessive and unhealthy kind of way. Almost as if he didn't wish to live a life where his brother wasn't always at his side.

My theory is that once upon a time the Wittebane Brothers were thick as thieves; growing up as a part of a clan or cult of "witch-hunters" who were all ultimately wiped out in a massive genocide leaving Caleb and Phillip as the two surviving members.

Y'see it's easier for me to rationalize Philip's possessiveness of his brother this way. While toxic, it would still make perfect sense for him to act like this, in an extreme sense, if Caleb was all Philip had left in his world.

Based on Philip's memories of their childhood, he seemed pretty close with his brother before. And even after the loss of their people, I'd like to think from Philip's perspective, the loss didn't phase him much since he still had Caleb and so long as the Wittebane brothers were together and always together, that was all that mattered.

Caleb was probably very special to Philip because his brother was probably his whole world. All that he had left.

So when Caleb fell in love with the witch---who I think the TOH theorists are correct in being an ancestor of the Clawthorne family---and wanted to settle on the Boiling Isles, not only did Philip see that as a betrayal of his and his brother's beliefs but also a betrayal of their bond as brothers. As family.

They were supposed to stay together. To leave those wretched witches behind and return home together.

And here comes Caleb, not only to say that he wanted to remain on the very place him and his brother were trapped on but he also wanted to welcome one of those vile witches into the Wittebane Family as he chose to make her his bride. To mix with said witch; thus betraying everything their family stood for again. For Phillip, that was asking for too much. And I'd like to think that Philip blamed the witch for "enticing" his brother. In Philip's memories, we saw him approach Caleb and the witch with a dagger.  My theory is that Philip was attempting to "save" his brother from the witch by killing her off. I believe the dagger was originally meant for the Clawthorne witch but when Caleb realized what his brother was about to do, he intervened and got killed in the process while trying to come between the very two people he loved.

Perhaps Flapjack also had a part to play in the conflict too? 

Belos recognized him!

Since Philip knows Flapjack, it is fair to assume that Flapjack originally belonged to Caleb at some point. Hence the reason why he even chose Hunter in the first place.

This makes me wonder something---

If Flapjack shares history with Caleb and Belos/Philip...then, surely Hunter will have questions regarding Caleb and since Hunter can understand Flapjack, does this mean Flapjack can share with Hunter some details involving Caleb’s life on the Isles leading up to his death? 

That is some food for thought there.

Getting back on track, while the deaths of the former Golden Guards/ Grimwalkers by Belos were intentional, I'd like to think that the first death was an accident.

Who knows? Perhaps Philip had intended to stab his brother in the back because he honestly thought he was saving him. Perhaps Philip, in his delusion, believed the witch had bewitched Caleb and had him under a spell that was "making him more acceptable to the Boiling Isles" and came up with a plan to "free him" with the dagger. Or perhaps Philip thought the witch had replaced his brother with a fake---like a changeling or doppelganger---an act of witch trickery and the only way for Philip to “save Caleb” was to kill the fake? Whatever the reason, I still stand by my hunch that Philip did not mean to kill his brother the first time. It was all an unfortunate accident and Philip ressurrecting his brother as a Grimwalker was probably his way of rectifying that mistake.

Unless...there'll be a twist where Phillip sincerely thought that killing his brother and resurrecting him as a Grimwalker would make him "change his mind" and return him to being a witch-hating witch hunter like he used to be, just like him.

I think bottom-line, Philip's whole issue is that he needs to be more accepting of change.

Belos/Philip is legit the personification of the man from the past stuck in the past; completely resistant to moving on from his old ways and former ties.

Bottom-line, I think at his core, Philip is a lonely conflicted man who has spent his entire lifetime and more chasing after a former life he had instead of embracing the new one he could’ve had if he was more willing to accept it.

He’s kind of like a twisted vengeful version of the Wizard of Oz in a weird sense. A “fake magician” who came from another world to a magical one where tricked everyone into thinking he was a great and powerful being.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Philip could’ve been a King of the Boiling Isles, beloved by all. 

Mothertrucker; he was straight up the literal KING of a magical world, beloved and trusted by all for over 1000 years but because he was so stuck in his old ways, refusing to move on, refusing to change---he let slip through his cursed fingers what could’ve easily been a very promising and fulfilling life for him. One where he could’ve still had his brother in it if he actually cared that much about him in the first place.

To put it bluntly--- Belos/Philip is kind of a jackass when you really think about his actions and motive. He really be that stubborn ole mule refusing to budge from where he stands. But...oddly enough, his jackass nature is what makes him intriguing to analyze and oddly likeable to me. 

Ultimately what I like about Belos/Philip is that while he’s done a shit ton of terrible things, he’s not your typical mustache twirling villain whose only obsessed with power. 

Philip is complex as a character since you can’t quite put your foot on what the literal fudgenuggets is his deal. 

Why is he the way he is and why are his ambitions so righteous-sounding on paper but his intentions are so skewed. To me, it’s this complexity that makes Belos/Philip a rather intriguing villain in my opinion. One who I’d like to talk more about whenever I’m in the mood.  Needless to say, I'll be looking forward to seeing his character delved into more next season especially in accordance to the next chapter of Hunter's development. 

I saw that Philip-drop. I know he’s with Hunter now...again.

Where this will go next from here for these two is what I’m itching to see.  Hunter is my number one favourite TOH character as of S2 and his shared story and conflict with Philip/Belos has been one of the more compelling plot points of this season for me. That being said, I can't wait to see where it all goes moving forward. ~LittleMissSquiggles (2022)

Oh! So my brother hadn’t seen any of season 3 of The Owl House yet, and took a rather long break from the series, which gave me the bright idea to binge the entire show with him and my other brother like we did Amphibia, and I just have to say now that it’s so fresh in my mind, wouldn’t a TOH game be so fucking cool? Like think of the puzzles you could make with this kind spell system, how intricate the combat could be, the incredible open world potential of The Boiling Isles!?

What got me most excited was thinking for myself how basic natural spell casting would work. It would be kind of timing based since depending on the size of the circle you draw it could produce a wildly different effect or something! I hate how in some games the special abilities are reduced so much to “Press button, big damage, lose precious resource or get put on timer.” Like imagine for every spell, you had to draw something? Now that would be a cool gimmick for a game! A minigame in of itself in every potential move! Literally adding layers to the game!

Imagine in order to get the upper hand in combat, or to save your skin when you get caught by a trap in an underground dungeon, after choosing the spell to cast, you had to draw out a spell circle quickly, but also not mess it up, and decide on the size of it in order to determine its strength, as well as so many other possible choices you could take, making it not only decision based, but also skilled based, each choice is between what challenge you want and what rewards you want from them. That’s not even to mention the potential of glyphs! I mean it would just be so cool, and it could expand upon the whole circle drawing element to, gah! So many ideas, so much potential! Imagine the movement tech possible with glyphs and spells and staffs! The platforming! Puzzles! Combat! Aaaah! But it’s not likely to ever happen unfortunately… sigh.

That’s not a major loss, really, it’s just not meant to be I guess. But, that’s not to say ideas like these can’t be used in a non Disney owned game, you could make a whole new world with whole new characters really, Disney doesn’t own the rights to magic and circles as much as they may wish! It’s just that, I think some of the ideas presented in The Owl House would also be really cool to have in a game, with skill/puzzle based casting which challenges you to simply do, that also has unique effects on the world around it. Okay look.

I’m a big fan of both Amphibia and Owl House, and both are pretty great shows, but for someone to say “Amphibia is better than Owl House” just feels wrong to me. And I’m not saying you can’t like Amphibia more, because that’s valid, but there is just no way it’s better I’m general.

Owl House has done so much in the representation department for not only the lgbtq+ community but also poc, people with different body types, etc. But Amphibia on the other hand, only (at the moment) has three main human characters, who yes 2/3 of them are poc, but they’re all literal stick figures. Luz has a realistic body type, while Anne looks like she hasn’t eaten in years. I understand people look like that but for all three of those characters to be skinny is just… eh. I understand it’s the art style, but in the trailer for season 3 they showed people with different body types so I don’t understand why they didn’t do that from the beginning.

And while both shows do this pretty well, I can’t help but favor the way owl house covers actual human behavior (idk how else to describe it sos) more than Amphibia. Like in the beginning of Amphibia I was hooked on Anne struggling to understand the true meaning of friendship, but I kinda forgot about it as the series went on. What I love about owl house is they give characters redemption, but don’t always say you’re forgiven. Like in understanding Willow after Amity apologized Willow says something along the lines of “I can’t say we’re friends, but it’s a start” and Willow and Amity haven’t had many moments of extreme friendship since then. Like their friendship didn’t pick right back where it left off. Sasha is an interesting character though, because of her “I know what I’m doing isn’t right in Anne and/or Marcy’s eyes, but I like what I’m doing” which is something I wish they dove into a little more. How this is a point you may be wondering, is while both shows do it well, the owl house is more constant with it, and shows it with more than just the main characters.

The main characters in both shows can’t compare I’m sorry. Luz is not only great representation, but she’s a take on the “quirky” stereotype that makes her more than just that. She also does so much to help the people she likes, and even manages to make her way into people hearts (😏). I also find her very relatable and funny but that’s me. It just makes sense to me why the show is centered around Luz… but Anne. Anne is an okay character, I just wish she wasn’t the main one. I’ll admit she’s done a bit, but compared to Marcy and Sasha, her trauma is kinda just witnessing everyone else get hurt. Yes, that’s an awful thing, but I would much rather see Marcy or Sasha as the main character. I will admit, Anne not being the classic Disney channel cartoon quirky female main character is nice, I can’t help but feel she’s a bit… basic? This point is a bit more opinionated so I apologize for that.

The fillers is the biggest problem for me. Owl house did a great job making filler episodes that had to do will the plot or world building in someway, and with an exception of a couple episodes in season 1, people usually find all of the episodes entertaining in some way. Amphibia season 1 makes me want to jump out the window. There’s only two episodes I actually like watching in that season, and wow it’s the ones with Sasha in them! Season 2 is a bit better, but honestly I only like the filler episodes with Marcy in them. While I understand it’s a “kids show”, when you have another kids show on the same channel, playing at the same time period, who can manage to bring an adult audience who enjoys the filler episodes, I don’t see how you can use that as an excuse. Someone also pointed out the fact that Amphibia is more of a slow burn, which makes sense, but they could have executed it in a better way that was more compelling to the audience. I’ve seen too many people stop watching Amphibia because of the filler episodes, and people shouldn’t have to skip over content because it’s boring, you know?

I also feel more of an attachment to all of the characters in owl house. Like I either love them, or I love to hate them, no matter who they are. Like it’s been a year since we got any real Skara scenes, and I still love her… but in Amphibia I could care less about most of the frogs. Like I don’t even remember most of their names- I feel like having a cast of characters that people can love and appreciate, no matter who they are, contributes to a great show. Not only do I talk about this a little bit, but the fandoms honestly show this as well. The owl house fandom has done so much to make the Hexside students seem like a bigger deal than they are because they actually like them. In Amphibia, you can find one or two posts about a certain character, and never hear about them again OR the character is all you hear about.

Tbh tho, both shows are extremely similar, and I see why it’s hard to choose one over the other, I just have to be honest and say I don’t understand why Amphibia is better. I know most of my arguments were based on opinion, but like, a lot of people agree with my opinion (except the Anne thing. I’ll forever be alone on that). If you like Amphibia more, than good for you, I won’t judge. This is just how I feel about it and I would love to hear your opinion.

But while we’re here I will be talking about the utter bs Disney is showing to the two shows. Like Amphibia is getting ANOTHER theme song take over, a Christmas special, celebrity voice actors, and not to mention a full season three…

While the owl house is stuck with shortening it’s third season cause “budget cuts”. Bitch please. If you were losing so much money, then why not take some of your money away from Amphibia’s theme song take over and put it towards a full season three for toh. They both get the same amount of attention, but just because one is pushing boundaries for violence rather than the lgbtq community, doesn’t mean you can pick favorites.

Rohan was his baby brother and he was always going to be worried about him and wish that all his dreams came true. Spending a little more than a year apart from him and not knowing how he was really doing the entire time hurt Yuvraj deeply because he was so used to caring for his youngest brother. Thankfully, the separation didn’t last as long as Yuvraj feared it would and they were fully back in one another’s lives again. It was reassuring to know that Rohan had a wonderful girl like Mahima by his side. He shook his head at one point. How could he possibly not like a gift given to him by his brother. It was a cool leather jacket and Yuvraj would have to wear it the next time he went out with his brothers so Rohan could see that his choice was stellar. “Pagal…” he chuckled, not knowing how Rohan thought he could ever cut ties with him. Yuvraj loved him way too much to just leave him behind.

Oh gosh I’m so sorry for a late response on this but I’ve been busy ;;

Um, I actually don’t have much to say about OP 2 and ED 3 that everyone else hasn’t already talked about except I love my girls???? Like seeing Ema and Aoi side by side (or, well, Blue Angel and Ghost Girl) is perfection???? Seeing my two favorite characters look like they’re having a blast just being side by side??? Honestly I can’t ask for more there except maybe more of the girls in general ;w;Everyone seems so worried about Takeru being Vector 2.0 but tbh I think there’s not much to worry about from Takeru’s side. He seems like a pretty good and chill friend (with maybe anger issues if the person in the OP is him at one point? Though tbf he probably outgrew this considering that he seems so precious now) so I wouldn’t necessarily jump on the “he’s crazy” or “he’s gonna betray Yusaku” just yet.

I do admit though that I’m worried about the screen time of everyone else in the cast. I worry for Ema and Aoi especially despite them having a spot in both the ED and OP (mostly because I don’t want them to rush their relationship quite yet from “fuck you you can’t tell me to ‘be responsible’” in episode 25 to “hey we’re friends now :D” in the upcoming episodes without explaining why and when that change occurred). 

I’m also worried for Ema in general but tbh that’s just because I don’t foresee what role she’ll play in this season aside from dealing with the Zaizens (which means I don’t foresee us getting her past for at least some hefty amount of episodes). 

Kyoko, Aso, Genome, Spectre…I sincerely hope they come back to grab more screent ime because I’m interested in them and I feel like they made such a great impression for only ever being important in two different arcs (Anothers and first half of ToH). 

There’s also Akira but I feel like he’ll be prominent just…not doing much. The only thing I can see him doing concerns Ema and Aoi but whether or not the show will go down that route…well, it’s a theory for now that I’ve desperately been holding on to and hope the show will do but if not…well, I’ll still write about it eventually probably

Shoichi, though…Shoichi, man. I have high hopes for him to be relevant this season and honestly I hope he gets more love from the show because as much as I love him it’s easy to forget just how involved he is in the show sometimes because the show uses him as a commenter more than a doer. Hopefully, though, with this season we’ll get to see him do things aside from sitting back and helping Yusaku at a distance because I can’t help but wish for him to pop out more as a character since I think he’s really intriguing in both a suspicious lack of backstory and his special connection to Yusaku as his closest ally.

And…I think that’s all the characters of the former cast to be concerned about. I do worry for their screen time but I feel like, hopefully, with a new season full of potential, everyone who deserves to get more screen time (Ema, Akira, Aoi, basically everyone who died in ToH arc) gets it.Oooo having an ED song with all the six kids being chill and stuff…yeah I’d definitely like to see that OwO It’d be so fun and cool to just have all the kids being nice and kind to each other or even being silly in the ED…they deserve to have peace, even if it’s only in the AU world of an ED song :’)

21st June - Unarguably The Best Sunday of 2020 and possibly one of the best of all time.

Yesterday, I got to meet my best friend, Sakshi after a long long time. Meeting her and her family members was a bliss and literally amazing. I am out of words to even describe that feeling. Had an amazing time with all of them. Although not required, but the reception which all of them gave, I will never ever forget that in my life. The best thing was I never felt that I was meeting bhaiya and bhabhi for the very first time, they were this good in making me comfortable and feel at home. One of the best part was they were even calling me ‘Wadhwa’ which most of my friends know me by and I was like wowww, this is just incredible and unbelievable. Inside I was like bhai yeh toh next level ho gaya because usually people initially call me by my first name and then over a period of time turn to Wadhwa. It just made me so so happy to hear that from bhaiya and bhabhi and it will be so good if they remember me by that only and I would be happy if Kartik for them should always remain a completely different person.

I have always respected Sakshi and feel that she is one of the most understanding, caring and loving person I have ever met. She is also one of the strongest person I know, not exaggerating it just saying what I feel. Those qualities of her is genuine to the core. Now I see the same qualities flow in the entire family be it aunty, bhaiya and bhabhi, all have the same and I was literally blown away with that. That everyone is so grounded with a down to earth personality speaks a lot about them. 

I don’t open up this much when I am meeting someone for the very first time, but kudos to them it felt pretty much felt like home. It felt something else only. That made yesterday one of the most beautiful and special day, thanks to all four of them. Not to forget, Bhuvi, the most loved of all, I remember holding her back in October 2019 when she was barely a month old. Back then, I had never held such a small baby in my hands my entire life (my nephew was born few months after that). She has grown up a lot, to just hold her again was also a wonderful feeling. I believe she will also grow to be a kind, compassionate, loving, helping and understanding being because those qualities flow in the entire family I believe. I even got to know her real name which goes by Aarohi, and I believe that she will also love dancing and singing in rain just like Shraddha Kapoor in ‘Tum Hi Ho’ song from Aashiqui 2. Hahahaha:)

Shootout to Sakshi and Bhabhi for preparing everything with their precious efforts and time. Everything was wonderful starting with Chocolate Shake, Pasta, Biryani styled Rice, Tea (That Chai was Paradise) and the Desert. Chocolate Shake much more so because my friend tried and sample tested it a day before and then made the most delicious of it yesterday. Thank you so so much for that, Sakshi. 

We also cut the cake which I had brought along with me. I hope everyone would have liked it. While cutting the cake, Happy Birthday song was played on Alexa and some pics and selfies were taken with everyone smiling and happy. They were calling Alexa their sixth member and I loved that comment literally and it brought a smile on my face. We also played a couple of rounds of Uno with Bhuvi silently sitting and watching everyone play. Twice it was won by bhabhi and once by bhaiya, bhaiya even sarcastically said to bhabhi after he won the third round that ‘Har baar tumhe thodi na jeetne denge:)’ 

Shootout to all of them, but especially to bhaiya, it really felt like as if two old friends were meeting after a long long time. I even asked bhaiya to support me when Sakshi and bhabhi were forcing and convincing me to have some more food ki ‘bhaiya aap toh support karo kam se kam’ and that led to a burst of laughter amongst us all. Bhaiya, you literally have my heart!

Then we went to the open terrace, it was so soothing, a calm breeze was flowing, the whole family was there and we were just living in the moment. We took some great pics, I will always look back at those pics and the time together with a big big smile and awe. I never imagined that a day can be so blissful and beautiful. I have only read about such days in books or seen in movies. To experience it myself is beyond any words. 

In between we talked and shared about our time together during college days, the uncountable memories, the projects done together, help and support given during the time of examinations, time together while making presentations, coffee pe charcha etc etc. I made sure that I don’t use any of my devices and social media because I wanted to be in the moment and give my undivided time and attention to everyone. Mobile and such things can take a backseat during such times I believe. 

Coming on to Bhabhi, she along with Sakshi prepared everything by putting in a great deal of time and effort. Have always seen Sakshi showing lots of love and attachment with bhabhi, now I know why. She was extremely loving, supportive and kind and has literally held everyone together. I extremely loved her meeting for the first time. Bhabhi, everything that you prepared was extremely wonderful and delicious. I remember one more thing, bhaiya saying to bhabhi ki ‘ghar ki masterchef toh tum hi ho’. It was really a great selection and cooked equally deliciously. 

Last but not the least, coming on to aunty, she is just too loving and kind, although I have said to Sakshi a couple of times but would have loved to say her in person that she is one of the strongest women, given what she has gone through and done for Sakshi and bhaiya, I cannot even imagine that and the only thing I can do is empathize. Unfortunately, couldn’t say it to her in person (maybe next time I meet aunty will convey the same) but have always felt the same and it will always stay like that. Sakshi should be proud of aunty for supporting her at all times especially the tough ones and so should be aunty with her because she has given her all in studies and other things, has grown tremendously and has stood strong despite everything. 

To cap off my time, on my request we went on a small and beautiful ride. And that was it, the most beautiful day in a long long time, the best sunday of 2020 and probably one of the best of all time. The memories of which will stay with me forever. It’s really a bliss to have such great friends and more so the opportunity to spend this great and quality time together with everyone. Extremely thankful and grateful to have had an opportunity to just live a day like yesterday. What more do you want in your life. This is the way it should be lived. Such great friends and family and you have a lot to be thankful for. God, why can’t every day be so good and beautiful? 

Although before leaving, I said Thank You to everyone for everything, but still Thank you so much again Sakshi, Aunty, Bhaiya, Bhabhi and Bhuvi, not to forget the sixth member, Alexa haha. It’s a bare minimum I can say. Thank you for a beautiful day like yesterday, will remember it for years to come. Can only wish that the whole family stays this happy, loving and smiling forever. Thank You!

thanks for putting your thoughts out into the world. srsly. your critiques and insightful, genuine, thoughtful writings about some of my fav shows (amphibia, toh) and games (hsr) have given me real moments to sit back and think on lots of things.

you're excellent at clearly stating a point without antagonizing or trashing the other side of the argument, and always seem clear and well-spoken. that's hard to find in analysis or "hot take" style blogs, ESPECIALLY when it comes to writing.

it's hard to get mad at anything you've put down, and easy to let it actually bring up interesting questions to chew on. also, your writing is very enjoyable and fun- I'm gonna see if I can snag me a copy of Crises Girlfriends soon!

Thank you. All of this genuinely means a lot to me, especially, frankly, the part about avoiding antagonizing or belittling the other side. My ability to speak my thoughts clearly and bring points together is just kind of part of how my brain is put together (only half of which I can blame on being on the spectrum maybe) but the concept of not being an asshole while I try to make a point wasn't something I always had.

That's not just me being humble either. I lived with a friend for two years, helping take care of their mom while they helped give me a place to exist while dealing with my depression, and they straight up told me that who they had known five years before then wouldn't have been allowed on their couch. I literally stopped being a part of Discord or Skype groups (to really date this) for I think at least three years because I would spend so much of my time just trying to prove I was right. To win and show how superior I was.

The change from needing to be right and instead to simply have a conversation/debate was a major change to how I saw analysis and ended up the way I am. Not to say my emotions never get the better of me, not helped by when I got into analysis being when The Nostalgia Critic reigned supreme (I haven't watched him in well over half a decade now), but I try to keep it more about the work itself. I've even talked about in multiple blogs how my opinion blogs are less just about reviewing things or the like (again, not perfect, especially with TOH) but instead a lot more about teaching lessons and thoughts on things that I think can genuinely help people.

To that end, belittling others is counterintuitive. For as upset as I get with the Amphibia fandom about their takes on the ending, I do empathize with them. I can understand why they wish for the ending they wanted, even if I disagree on it being better. I can see a lot of why TOH, especially as someone's first big fantasy work, would mean a lot to them and draw them in and be something special, even if a long term fantasy fan might find a lot of it trying too hard. Not only is that approach more humane but it also allows for better analysis because for as easy as it can be to say how something is bad, it's a lot harder to genuinely address why that work may also be popular. At least, you know, without being an asshole and going "It's wish fulfillment so only losers who want to escape this world could enjoy it." That's reductive and useful to literally no one.

Anyways, I think that's more than enough bragging? shrug On my part. Again, thank you so much and I hope you enjoy Crises Girlfriends when you get the chance! Have a good day everyone and see you next tale.

Just read your post explaining Gauri's actions yesterday. Is Gauri setting herself up for more pain? Like even the little bit hope she has, is only going to hurt her in future. I always figured Gauri for a practical girl who wants clarity in her life, so why is she giving Om a chance after the last time which was a colossal fail. I get Om's confusion, he didn't want to get married to her, but at the same time he is indebted to her, toh locha hai. But why is Gauri being indecisive?

Gauri is not indecisive. She made it clear when she repeated to Omkara why she is in the house - “sirf bahu”. Neither she is setting herself up for more pain. You can’t blame her for wavering just a little bit when it’s Omkara who is taking steps towards her. He did it both literally and symbolically yesterday. He walked towards her, he held her hands, he willingly caressed her gently in a not-so-platonic way. It’s essential to remember that while Gauri does want clarity from Omkara, she also lowkey wants him to give her a positive answer that would make her stay. That doesn’t change the fact that she won’t accept whatever answer he gives her but it’s only human nature to start feeling hopeful when things are looking to shape up to be how they wish they were.  I tou would say Gauri still dealt with her wavering with much dignity. She keeps pulling away the first and keeps having the last word; she keeps showing Omkara that she will no longer be pacified by these little games he plays. The girl legit has NO hope left from Omkara..how is she setting herself from pain? Her reaction to him having no words for her is a simple sigh and, “Pata tha.”

They had a little break during the Shivika fiasco when they teamed up. Gauri willingly didn’t bring up their personal issues when they were busy solving Shivika’s. But that didn’t stop her from throwing in shade whenever she could. She is still very much consistent regarding her decision of not seeking any more answers. But she never stopped Omkara to give her the answer. She isn’t waiting for him to give her clarity but she wouldn’t reject it either. As for why she isn’t leaving OM toh I think she’s waiting for Shivika to be properly married (Shivaay did propose Annika na?) because they are her family and she has a right to be a part of their happiness specially when the two of them would very much want her at the front of all the celebrations. Gauri’s equation with Omkara is no longer related to how she is with Shivaay and Annika. Omkara is the mess of Gauri’s life; Shivika are her steady family.

I am genuinely curious, since Elsewhere Elsewhen is your least favourite episode. Which is your favourite Owl House episode or the one you think is the best?

Lost in Language is my favorite episode. Which yes, of course the Lumity writer picks a Lumity episode. In the version of this that was going to cover three possible favorites, they were all Lumity episodes. And, well, all Season 1 episodes admittedly as well. S2 enters my list if we go top five probably but I don't know.

We're talking about number one though and let's get the weakest portion out of the way first: It has a TOH B plot. A B plot mostly existing to add jokes and fill time but it's by far not the worst B plot the series has had. The stuff with the Bat Queen's kids is fun, enjoyable and actually feels like it could lead to something important eventually with the whistle at the end. It's nothing special and it suffers from the second season… making it make no sense (you raised King, Eda, how is this that new to you?) but again, there's worse out there when it comes to TOH B plots.

It's also short. Those interludes genuinely know what they are and get out of the way for the A plot quickly which starts on a STRONG foot with Amity reading to kids. Now the obvious thing to say here is what Luz says: This sour lemon drop has a sweet center and it works well for that. But…

I actually like that it could be interpreted a second way. Preparation for being the EC head… At least at the time. After all, Lilith's job as we've seen so far includes being an inspiring figure for the future generation of witches. Not only that but supposedly as a teacher too to that generation, including to Amity. All of this means that Amity could have started reading to kids for selfish reasons… But at this point this has changed. She cares too much about the books she's reading, the kids and has grown a connection there that still shows her sweet center even if the sourness is what first led to her taking the position.

The twins are also a delight this episode and I REALLY wish they'd kept the energy they have here for longer than only this episode. The cockiness and confidence really fits well with the Blight family while giving a different sort of edge to it. Effectively they show what happens when instead of fearing perfection, you buy into the hype and believe you are perfect. Untouchable. Etc.

And this attitude leads to cruelty to anything that tries to disprove it and BOY are they cruel in wanting their sister's journal. There's a weird aspect to it though that feels very S1 Isles though. Tattling on them means all of your deepest secrets getting revealed. The sort of overreaction that normally would get a character written off as pure evil but kind of works in the setting, at least at the time, while also being grounded in the real world enough that anyone hears that and recoils.

The use of the diary to further the understanding of Amity is brief but cute and useful but that kind of brings me to a larger point: This episode is probably the most fun that the series literally EVER has with magic. The shooting star's effects are incredible, the fun they have doodling in the books is delightful and how they change the innocent and sweet into the awful and hurt is chilling. If the show had this much fun with its magic more often, instead of it mostly being functional at best, I would complain about it WAY LESS.

Speaking of the sweet and harmless being made monstrous though, I really wish we as a fandom spoke about the conflict with the book maker more. It doesn't have any real impressive animation or the like but it mixes comedy, drama and action well and has a lot of fun with what being sewn into a book means, including not being afraid to make it seem horrifying.

Which helps the moment when Amity gets to talk to the book maker afterwards hit all the harder. This is a character she cared about and her shock during the fight and her sweetness at the end just reaffirms all of that. It also just helps reaffirm the point of the episode that Amity truly does have a good nature. That she knows the right thing but has led herself astray in the pursuit of perfection. Or, you know, only because of her mom… sigh

And that sigh is kind of why this became only about one episode instead of more. Originally I also talked about Adventure in the Elements and Grom because I wasn't sure which three was my favorite. I actually expected Lost in Language to have the least chance amongst the three to be it. But…

To keep it brief and keep this blog positive: I can't enjoy the show too much because too much of the journey has been tainted and contradicted and my guide, the main character, is one I see to many flaws in. See as just not a good person. The breaking point was Luz's greatest fear in Grom because… Boy it feels a lot less like the fact that she was lying to her mom had anything to do with that, doesn't it? Not when she lies as easily as most people breathe nowadays. Kind of… Kind of implies that her greatest fear was really just getting caught and having to face the consequences…
