Your new update was amazing! I'm so curious as to why Maul ended up laughing while watching TPM scene.

Thanks so much, I’m glad you liked it! The scene at the end is one I’ve been itching to do since the very start of the fic. Spoilers under the cut!

So one thing I set out to do in this fic was pick up a lot of abandoned plot threads in TCW and the EU/Legends, but because I’m me, I also wanted to address one of the things that has bugged me since the year of our lord 1999; Maul just straight up standing there, waiting to be chopped in half. There’s a good 2 seconds where he obviously SEES Obi-Wan, and that he’s armed, but he freezes.

This is me getting kind of meta, but in a comic of TPM, Obi-Wan does the slice-and-dice while he’s jumping up out of the pit, not after he’s already landed. I always wondered if this was a “Han shot first” thing; maybe Lucas decided it was too much of a dirty trick for Our Hero to pull, since Maul wouldn’t have been able to defend himself. Instead he has Ben take the most obvious baseball-type swing while Maul, Mr. Hyperactive himself, just stands there.

But then in Rebel there’s an interesting moment where Maul lectures Ezra when freezes when fighting an Inquisitor, saying hesitating for even a moment can cost you your life or your friends lives yadda yadda.

He gets pretty heated about it, so much so that it sounds like he’s drawing on very personal hesitate-y experience. Suddenly this nonsensical standing around a LOT more interesting. Why were you hesitating Maul? We know it’s not cos you’re shy about the murder so whyyyyy, hmmmmm???

Basically, before this moment, he’d forgotten the handful of seconds where he froze all captivated by Ben’s baby blues, understandable with all of the horrible stuff that happened afterward. He’d already blamed himself for not finishing Ben while he was dangling in the pit, but the fact he hesitated because he was getting all fluttery over a Jedi? Oof.

Also, Obi-Wan holding Qui-Gon and crying is so much like Satine’s death scene it’s driving him bananas. It’s a one-two punch of a reminder: Maul has been responsible for most of Obi-Wan’s worst life-defining moments, AND the tenderness and care is a far, far cry from what happened to him. He just saw his 22 year old self get tossed out like garbage, headed for planet-of-the-garbage, he’s jeaaaalous.

Of course, he doesn’t know that in the original timeline, he would’ve had a tender death scene all his own heheheheh

Long story short, the story of his life has been turned on it’s head and no one is better at unhinged hysterical laughter than Maul. He might have been able to take all this in stride, but Ben’s mind adventures in chapter 22 and Vader’s weird Force manipulations mayyyy be taking a bit of a toll 👹

I liked what you wrote in the update! The thing about Obi-wan's anxiety on whether he is meant to be a jedi is quite in character. It makes sense that he needs eyes and minds other than his own that can give him a better authority on whether he is doing the right thing. Also yes 6 pages of anxiety is A Lot, maybe they just boosted his insecurities for the sake of like teen angst??? (As it is catered to a ya audience??)

What do you think about the other 2 times he says he might or might have left the order and his reasoning behind those?

The one with Satine is a bit difficult for me to understand I think, because idk he says it to her after she makes a dying confession. So it's hard for me to analyze that because I don't know if it's the sentiment of a man who's about to lose someone he loved or if he had genuinely thought about leaving the order for her. In which case he has had other love interests that he's turned away so. Idk I want to hear your thoughts on the whole thing.

I've seen it argued that Padawan "boosted his insecurities" as you put it for the teen audience, but that's not exactly what I think. I think it's a believable amount of anxiety for Obi-Wan as he ends up (and his growth over the course of the book creates a believable amount of unhealthy letting-go obsessions for him as well); it's just surprising to me that so many pages of the 400 book exist just in his head. It's the only Star Wars book I've read that's exclusively from one person's point of view without another person's way of thinking or doing to offset the imbalance of the main character's mind. There are just pages and pages of Obi-Wan cycling through the same old thoughts. It's incredibly repetitive--which is how those kinds of thought patterns are, so it's realistic! I'm just surprised it sold, I guess. Is this what YA readers want?

ANYWAYS--your real question! To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure which two times you're referring to! Someone (possibly @merrysithmas?) wrote a post a few months ago about how Obi-Wan's claim that he would have left the order for Satine isn't actually that unique, because there are several times he has or claims he would have. That being said, I've decided I don't even really like the clone wars and Filoni's character decisions about Obi-Wan, so I just haven't memorized any of that stuff lol. I always forget Satine exists--even though she does seem very much like the kind of girl an anxious gay teenager would decide he'd fallen in star-crossed impossible love with lol. In short, I don't believe he really meant it, and if he had left the order for her as a teenager, I think it probably would have gone about as well as his other attempts to leave the order for teenage social reasons.

My favorite times that Obi-Wan considers leaving the order are:

At the end of The Phantom Menace (as depicted in the TPM novel and Master & Apprentice's epilogue, and as implied in the film). Before the Council has approved him to take Anakin as a formal Padawan, his vow to Qui-Gon that he would train the boy has replaced his vow to the order. Which is so fascinating! The levels of guilt and loyalty to Qui-Gon he must have, that he would see his wishes through even if it meant leaving behind his entire life and planned future! I love this moment as the start of his FAITH in Anakin, because at this point Anakin has incredible symbolic value to him that he is willing to REBUILD HIS LIFE and form a new religion around Anakin, a child he has known for approximately 48 hours. I love imagining Obi-Wan raising and training Anakin somewhere completely separate from the Jedi Order, all because he made a guilty promise to his dying master that he would live his life in service to a boy from Tatooine. The possibilities are endless!

In Charles Soule's Obi-Wan and Anakin comic. Similar to the prior example, but when Anakin is a teenager and struggling to fit his connection to the force into the constraints of the Jedi order. Obi-Wan sees this, listens calmly to Anakin's thoughts about leaving the order, knowing all the while that he would leave with Anakin, that he would HAVE to. I think he talks to other Jedi about it and thinks about it on his own, but I can't remember if he assures Anakin that he would leave with him. His "promise to Qui-Gon" is still so important to him, though it's easy to see that Anakin himself is what's so important to him, that he has such FAITH in Anakin that he would leave to train him with or without his vow. (Having the concrete vow to guide himself by helps him trust his feelings, of course.) The great part about this whole mess is that he presents a supportive front to Anakin, while unconsciously manipulating him into feeling like he can't leave the order. Obi-Wan loves the order and wants to stay, and I think that motivates him to keep Anakin there more than actually believing it's what's independently best for Anakin.

Regarding the MS (MaxiSys) vs MK , MK is a global version of the tool and MS is region specific. MS will have warranty support in the specified region, whereas the MK has to go back to China for warranty repairs.

Function wise they are identical. I bought the MK906BT over the MS because the MS was 60–70%

more expensive from regional distributors.

MK are online products that usually have multi-language enabled.

MX: it’s a USA model. BUT it’s little more than a glorified code reader. Save a little more money and step up to their Least Expensive PROFESSIONAL line scanner the MS906BT.

MX808 is for the lube tech. MX808 has less “Hot Functions” Only the basic ‘typical’ service functions Oil, Park Brake, SAS, Battery, DPF, TPMS. So NO Throttle Learn, Gear Learn, H/Lamp Alignment, Window/Sunroof. Plus the 808 is a smaller tablet, slower processor, smaller RAM and Storage, No Camera, No USB & HDMI Ports.

MP: MP has advanced functions. It’s a bit more than just a scanner. It pretty much does everything including coding and keys. and pricing was way different.

BT: Any scanner that ends in BT is for Bluetooth vci.

Including: MP808BT, MK808 BT, DS808BT, MK906BT, MS906BT

TS: TS= Tire Pressure. Anything that ends in TS has TPMS coverage and can program sensors.

TS608 is mainly a TPMS tool for MX programming, sensor relearning and tpms diagnostics. Its

basically already included in the MP808TS unit, but none of the others. As a TPMS side tool i would rather go for the TS508 as Autel provides lifetime free updates on that one and it does the job.

One thing to consider is the subscription cost once the first free year have passed. The MK808BT

(BT=bluetooth interface) is -much- cheaper to keep updated than the MP808TS. If used professionally, no problem. But for DIY this matters, what seems to be the best tool soon becomes outdated due to heavy subscription cost. Then it may not be the best tool anymore.

Quite a few comments against anything not a US model. What if you will be moving overseas? Would a US model get support in say Germany? So if you are not in America, you don’t have to stick on US models.

The Dark Side

I hate Hewlett-Packard's PC division. I hate it with the fury of a thousand suns.

Long vent post. Logorrhea below. Clicky.

My go-to portable is 2022's edition of the Razer Blade 14. It's small, reasonably lightweight, it has an admitted paucity of ports, but at least two of them are USB-A 3.0. It's not terribly modular, but the hard drive is easily accessible and replaceable with any commodity M.2 or NVME solution you could think of. Thankfully, all the vendors that served as sources for the hardware are covered by Windows Update for drivers. The keyboard's the perfect size for someone like me who tends to stick his hands in one position near the Home row and that occasionally shifts up and down, and the Chicklet keys feel clicky, tactile and responsive. I can feel my typos as they happen, so I don't typically miss a lot of 'em.

Compare and contrast with what happens when a Boomer decides to buy a slab on the cheap. The HP CN000x "notebook" is a heaving monster that claims to be portable but that has the form factor of a Desktop Replacement, with seventeen inches of screen that more or less scream overkill for anything clerical. The keycaps are mushy and massive, they're spaced too far apart from one another to allow for comfortable muscle-memory typing or for sniping around your home row without looking down - and the Power button is somehow wedged between the F7 and F8 keys, all but guaranteeing that you're going to put your machine to sleep inadvertantly.

All of the above amounts to annoyances, however. What really gets me is what the vendor assumes to be entreprise-grade hardware and security features, when in fact it all amounts to a collection of bloatware and generally inexplicable features crammed at an entry-level price point.

Hardware-level encryption on top of the base TPM layer? She's gonna be fetching emails from her ISP's server and watching cat videos. Entreprise-grade offsite storage shoved in your face upon boot-up? I wouldn't give this shitty keyboard to anyone Corporate even if I actively hated a suit. Dedicated hybrid SSDs? We're in 2023, memory is dirt fucking cheap; there's no real excuse to be pushing spinning rust on someone who has about zero mass storage needs.

Then, there's the kicker: this is an HP laptop, and you cannot, in fact, simply flash a new OS on there and just expect it to recognize everything. You cannot, because the Live media you'll create also needs to receive driver packages specifically from HP in order for the rig to recognize its own hard-mounted and unremovable hard drives.

The only problem? Each fucking SKU has its own driver solution. You need to hit up HP's Support site, let it scan your hardware (rootkits, ew) and then narrow down its fuckjillion "matches" to the one missing driver file it has in its database. A driver file that doesn't, in fact, relate to those drives you're trying to format. A driver that relates to the equally-useless FC reader and that somehow also allows the hybrid drive to show up on the Drives list in a new Windows 11 install.

So, I found the driver, installed it, crossed my fingers... and it still didn't work.

Hunting online got me to see that while HP had shipped this particular line of 17-inch laptops with Windows 11, not all of the hardware was compliant with Windows installs that start at 22H2.

So, knowing I have some spare SSDs that won't throw a fit, I add one in. Zippo. This particular model only accepts proprietary parts. That's without mentioning how the four plus-sized Philips screws that held up the bottom plate were a lie, more or less promising some degree of accessibility only to expose a fucking moron's take on Apple's own closed-sourced engineering.

I mean, I have to hand this to Apple, at least - its hardware plans are graceful. Every PCB goes where it's supposed to and its connectors aren't unnaturally long in order to account for some oversight in general placement. There's no globs, no wasted space - and even if you're not supposed to, you get the sense that any sane person with a screwdriver can at least disassemble and reassemble your average iDevice without making too much of a mess.

HP? Fuck, HP is so concerned with being "helpful" that it buries base components you'd want to easily access - like the SSD or RAM - under a mess of daughterboards.

By this point, I'm on the verge of hunting down who sold that poor lady this hunk of junk and braining them with it. My one and only option is to submit to HP's in-built Recovery partition, which probably runs on the Devil's idea of soldered-on EMMC.

Flashing the SSD portion of a hybrid drive, on the 25th of July, 2023, on a reasonably modern processor and 16 GBs of RAM, took all of eight hours. Eight hours of waiting while Walt swallowed flies, as HP opted, in its infinite wisdom, to hack up Windows 11's installation wizard with a bevy of paid offers that obviously had to include a fucking McAffee antivirus trial. After digging, I realized I'd dodged about ten gigs' worth of bloatware.

Windows is running and so am I, as I'm the abomination's temporary Administrator, while I sort everything out. The second part of my woes is going to unfold tomorrow, as I have to explain to a senior citizen that Microsoft actually wanting to text its userbase to authenticate them at common access portals is actually normal. Couple that with the fact that she's so concerned with security that she's set in passwords consisting of Complete fucking sentences she hasn't bothered to note down anywhere, and restoring her accounts is going to be such a PITA I'm going to stop for schwarma after two hours.

Be a good Admin, if you can, and take a blowtorch to anything HP-branded that isn't a printer or a flat-bed scanner. Oh, and don't be afraid to remind tech-averse Boomers that if you aren't going to be taking this particular machine online and only need to fetch codecs and word processor downloads, then there's nothing wrong with having "123456" as an account password. They're not going to remember anything else anyway, and expecting them to make sense of alphanumerics or special characters in a password is a fool's fucking errand. They won't note it down properly and then they'll call you six months to a year later, complaining that their system is bricked.

Hewlett-Packard computers are bloated and heaving paperweights.
