Subgenres Exist: Goth Metal is Goth
Anyone ever notice how absolutely mean those "all about the music" Goths are online? I've watched them dogpile, bully, and harass people over "ThE MuSiC" and feel perfectly justified.
Quite honestly, I'm just sick of it. Their awful behavior shows that they really aren't "about the music" at all.
They use music as false justification to keep people out, treat people badly, and make themselves feel more elite. A prime example being Gothic Metal.
The typical response of the "AbOuT ThE MuSic" crowd is to say, "Metal isn't Goth". Which is a bad argument as it completely ignores the reality of subgenres.
A subgenre is the combination of one or more genres. Bands that mix genres are part of both parent genres simultaneously. Such as Amebix being a Punk band and a Metal band at the same time. Likewise, bands within a subgenre won't sound exactly like the parent genres.
According to the "aLl AbOuT ThE MuSiC" crowd, "real Goth music" sounds like The Sisters Of Mercy. And, anything that doesn't sound like this isn't "real Goth". So, what about the bands that mix Metal and Goth Rock?
Their next argument often is, "You have to actually HEAR the Goth Rock influence in the music or it isn't Goth". This is another flimsy attempt at gatekeeping as there are several bands that audibly sound like the Sisters of Mercy mixed with Heavy Metal influence:

And let's not forget that Paradise Lost played at Whitby Goth Weekend alongside Fields of the Nephilim:
youtube
If they were truly "all about music", they'd have no issue with including ALL bands that fit their criteria even if they don't like it personally. But they don't and continue to present false arguments to try and "prove" why the above bands "aren't real Goth".
It just shows that they'll continue to move the goalposts so they don't have to be associated with people they don't like. Goalpost movers be like:
Tumblr media
I wouldn't be surprised if someone responded to this creating new nitpicky rules that conveniently excludes these bands from the "Tr00 KVLT Gawth band criteria".
As a genuine fan of music, I can't take people like this seriously. You don't have to like it. But if you're going to shove your criteria down everyone's throats you better be consistent.

Whenever I see you people talking about joining cults, I'm pretty sure you people are just talking about "cult" in the old-fashioned sense where it just means a type of secret religious society and not in the modern sense of basically some guy starting a group where he pretends to be a prophet or something and then he rapes women. But then again, I don't know. Maybe you people are fucking idiots and think Jonestown was cool beans because all you people do is listen to Tr00 Criem podcasts and don't know how to think for yourselves.

Attack Attack! - Someday Came Suddenly Record Label: Rise Records Release Date: November 11 2008 If there is one band encompasses “scene” culture, it’s Attack Attack. This Ohio outfit made quite a stir when they dropped their monumental debut LP, Someday Came Suddenly, in 2008 on Rise Records. There’s a lot that you can say about this band, as well as what they helped to influence and inspire, mainly within metalcore and the “scene” itself. This record is very important, in particular, even if there are a lot of metalheads that would disagree. To understand this record’s importance, you do have to understand its history first, because Someday Came Suddenly is a record that could have only existed in 2008. It’s dated but in the best ways possible. You see, while metalcore as a genre is more widely accepted and enjoyed now, it was not respected that much by anyone that considered themselves a metal fan in 2008. The early to mid-00s did give us bands like Norma Jean, Every Time I Die, Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Botch, and a lot of bands in the mathcore scene that metalheads typically liked, but what they despised were the emo and post-hardcore bands that were on the other side of the coin. I remember when it was the trend for people to post “memes” with certain metalcore bands saying they were “metal” with a “tr00 metal” band saying something along the lines of “lol that’s cute.” I used to see those quite often, and they were very irritating, because these metalcore bands are still “real metal,” whether these elitists want them to be or not. Attack Attack is one of the first bands in the metalcore scene to take electronic and pop music and combine it with the heavier stylings of hardcore and metal. At that time, metalcore and electronic music wasn’t mixed at all, but Attack Attack helped to inspire a few different subsets of metalcore, including electronicore, which is the idea of combining metalcore with various kinds of electronic music. They also helped to inspire “crabcore,” which has its roots in a weird and silly way, but there is something associated with that. Crabcore got its name from the way that the band positioned themselves in the music video for “Stick Stickly,” because they looked like crabs, so the joke was that it was called “crabcore.” That eventually ended up meaning synonymous with the crop of bands that relied heavily on breakdowns, clean choruses and screamed verses, as well as lyrics about relationships, teenage angst, and generic things like that. That was also called “Risecore,” coming from Rise Records, which Attack Attack was signed to, as well as a lot of other generic metalcore bands at the same time. So many generic metalcore bands were signed to Rise, it was just called “Risecore” after awhile, but you could also call it “crabcore” and you could have an idea of what people meant by that. While a lot of albums in that style haven’t aged well one bit, Someday Came Suddenly is one fo the first albums to do this, and because of that, I still really enjoy this album today for its innovation and interesting mesh of ideas that only could have worked in 2008. That’s the thing, this album wouldn’t work now, but for 2008, it was a fresh idea to take metalcore and put electronics and autotuned vocals in there. I’ll admit that this record is pretty rough around the edges in spots, but a lot of the songs on here are iconic for being staples of the Risecore genre back in the day. This album is also notorious for its drama, although if I had to more specific, it’s the band itself is more notorious for it. This record is just what kickstarted a few very important and prolific careers within metalcore, those being Caleb Shomo, Austin Carlile, and Johnny Frank. You might know them from such bands as Beartooth, Of Mice & Men, and Bilmuri. Vocalist Austin Carlile would perform harsh vocals on this album, and I absolutely love his vocals here, but due to problems internally, Carlile would be fired from the band, and on the band’s follow-up record, there would be a lot of shots taken at Carlile. The same could be said for Of Mice & Men’s 2010 self-titled debut album, where there are a couple of songs that take shots at Attack Attack. The feud between them was one of the most high profile ones at time, at least right before the Issues vs. Woe Is Me drama that happened in the early 2010s. Regardless of the drama, however, this album is just a lot of fun. Songs like “Bro, Ashley’s Here,” “Party Foul,” “Shred, White, And Blue,” and the classic “Stick Stickly,” these songs are just a blast to listen to. At only a half hour, this album breezes by, which is one thing I always appreciated about bands like this. They even have a really solid interlude track just simply called “Interlude” that’s a straight up electronic rager. It’s only a couple of minutes long, but it’s also ’s a nice little break from the heaviness that you’ve heard for the first half of the album. We also get a nice piano-driven outro simply called “Outro” that’s only a minute long, but the rest of the album is very engaging and energetic, as well as extremely fun and catchy. These guys really helped to pioneer of putting catchy hooks into metalcore, which hadn’t really been done yet by that point. Attack Attack went on to release two more albums, the 2010 self-titled (or the 2011 reissue with a bunch of bonus songs), and 2012′s This Means War. I’m probably going to review the former, but the latter album I don’t care for at all, so I have no desire to talk about it. I might bring it up in my review of the self-titled, but that’s about it. They did get back together a couple of years ago, although with almost none of the main members that people care about, so this band is a shell of its former self at this point. They do have an EP out, along with some singles, I think, but I haven’t heard anything from it, nor bothered to care, because why would I care about this band if the original members aren’t in it? This album, however, is easily their best, and the one that’s pretty much essential to any fan of the mid-00s metalcore scene. Attack Attack helped to bring the idea of catchy choruses and screamed verses, as well as more of an electronic sound to metalcore as well. It made the genre more accessible to kids that otherwise wouldn’t listen to it. That’s why I can’t really fault bands like Sleeping With Sirens, Pierce The Veil, and bands like that, because they took post-hardcore and metalcore and made it catchier and most accessible. Yeah, sure, there are way better bands out there, especially ones that do this style, but I can’t fault kids for enjoyting them. Attack Attack is one of the first bands that got me into metalcore, and I wasn’t super familiar with scene culture before I heard this record, but this is one of the records that did for me, and I was hooked into this sound and all of these bands. If you hadn’t heard this album, or you haven’t heard in awhile, I’d revisit it and give it another listen.

SATANÁS, A BANDA INFERNAL(PARTE I)
Tumblr media
(Continua...)
