Taking it wayyy back like some 20 years or so. Bruce Irons was one of my absolute favorite surfers to photograph because he wasn’t shy about busting BIG moves. At this time though, he had a habit of waiting till the sun had gone down before he would paddle out. As a photographer, that is frustrating, especially back in those days when we were still shooting on film and so were way more limited on options, compared to today's much easier-to-use digital cameras. This particular afternoon he paddled out straight after the sun had set. I had a strong feeling that he was going to go to the air, so I positioned myself so that the brightest part of the sky was right behind where I figured he would boost an aerial. Even though I did have the brightest part of the sky working for me, I was still shooting a really low shutter speed of just 1/60th of a second. Bruce boosted and I fired off a half dozen frames, hoping that I managed to get something. Just one frame was still enough to be usable. That frame ended up being on the cover of the Jan 2002 issue of Tracks magazine in Australia.
